Selected by a panel of local farmers and past award recipients the Farmer of the Year for 2010 is Doyle Talkmitt. This year at the Farmer Rancher Merchant Dinner we began a new category of award recognition; the Farm Hand. We felt that there are many individuals who deserve recognition for their contribution to agriculture in our area. The first recipient is Arturo Zertuche. Congratulations to both of you. Our first bale award was presented to the Clark Family Partnership at the Acuff-McClung Co-op Gin. The 450 pound bale was ginned September 28, 2010. The Chamber’s Annual Award Banquet was held February 28th this year. Our keynote speaker was the Honorable Judge Bill Sowder. The corporate sponsors were Xcel Energy, Citizens Bank and the Englund Fam- ily. Thank you to our sponsors, we couldn’t have done it without you. This year’s members of the year are: for the Women’s Division, Betty Knight and for the Chamber, Chad Wilson. They were recognized for their hard work and dedication to the Chamber as well as the contributions to many other organizations in Slaton. They multi-task very well. Boss of the Year went to two individuals this time, Sherrell and Robin Wilson. Their nomination rep- resented the sentiment of all their employees. Sherrell and Robin are as supportive of their employees as they are their business and their commu- nity. The Man of the Year is Jim Taliaferro. We all know how committed Jim is to Slaton as well as our schools. He projects a positive attitude for Slaton’s growth and progress. The Woman of the Year is Laura Lynn Wilson for her service and support of many organizations in town over many years, “wearing many hats”. The attitude and actions of all of these individuals serve as examples for the people, young and old, in our community. We also introduced those directors that were retiring off the Board of Directors: Dr. Cleve Kerby and Dick Copley for the Chamber and Alisha Glover and Sue Davis for the Women’s Division. Joining as new Directors are Wes Kit- ten of K&L Mechanical and Gary Boles of United Supermarkets. The Women’s Division’s new Directors are Kim Emerson and Elizabeth Martinez. Rounding out our evening, the dinner was catered by Klemke’s Sausage Haus and the Slaton Bakery, the plants were donated by Pauline’s Flowers and Gifts, printing by Slat-Co Printing.

We felt that there are many individuals who deserve recognition for their contribution to agriculture in our area. The first recipient is Arturo Zertuche. Congratulations to both of you. The Institute for Family Business at Baylor University hosts this annual awards ceremony to rec-ognize and honor outstanding family enterprises from across the state of Texas. Winners are chosen from three general categories - large (more than 151 employees), medium (51-150 employees) and small (50 or fewer employees). Outstanding firms are also honored in the special categories of Family Values Award, Com-munity Commitment Award, Fastest-Growing Family Business Award, Well-Managed Family Business Award, Founders Award and Heritage Award. USDA Rural Development is currently accepting applications for the Rural Energy for American Program (REAP) This program is available for eligible small business and agricultural producers in rural communities. The REAP program offers financial assistance, through guaranteed loans and grants, to help small businesses owners and agriculture producers for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. Grants up to 25 percent of project cost are available. Grant limits are $500,000 for renewable energy and $250, 000 for energy efficiency. Projects under this program

can range from wind, solar, and biomass to the replacement of aging heating and air conditioning equipment or the retrofitting of buildings to reduce energy consumption, such as window replacement, insulation and lighting. To better inform the public of assistance offered by USDA Rural Development, the local area office staff is avail-able to come to your community and present information on the rural energy for American Programs to interested business leaders. Please contact Todd Hebert at 806-785-5644 ext. 4 to schedule a rural energy for America program event in your community.

The Section 9007 Renewable Energy for America Program (REAP) provides financial assistance to purchase renewable energy sys-

tems or make energy efficiency improvements to rural small businesses.

REAP Projects reduce energy consumption and decrease operating costs by reducing or eliminating the need to purchase energy from traditional sources.

Applicants must be located in a rural area of less than 50,000 population and meet the Small Business Size Standards located at http://sbagov/size/index.html.

Funds can be used for construction or improvements, pur-chase and installation of equipment, and energy audits.

The program provides up to 25% grant with energy effi-ciency grants maxing out at $250,000 and renewable en-ergy grants maxing out at $500,000. An additional 50% can be funded from a REAP guaranteed loan of up to $25 million.
