Spiritual Renewal Week will be March 19 – 21, 2018. Our preacher for this year will again be The Reverend Dr. Steve

Caudle, pastor of the Greater Second Baptist Church in Chattanooga TN. He did a tremendous job for us last year and we

are excited about the fact that he will be back with us again this year. He is also the brother and brother-in-law of our co-

chairpersons, Bro. Henry and Esther Caudle.

Spiritual Renewal Week at First Baptist Church, Capitol Hill is similar to what other churches call revivals. It is a time

for the church to be renewed/revived. There are some who have never connected with the Christian faith and will find

this as an opportunity to commit to Jesus Christ (Romans 10:13). There are others who are challenged and grown weary

doing the work that God calls us to do (Galatians 6:9). Still others who have gotten off track from being actively engaged

in the work of the church and know that have fallen by the wayside (Psalm 51:10). Our week is designed to reach them.

But we also do it to recommit to do what Jesus Christ has called us to do – to make disciples (Matthew 28:19-20). We try

to reach those beyond the church walls, going into the “highways and byways” to compel people to come into a right

relationship with Jesus Christ (Luke 14:23). Our goal as people of faith is to help others see Jesus, not only through us,

but through a greater understanding of who he is.

In order for the week to be effective, the Spiritual Renewal week committee is asking that between Monday, March 5 and

Sunday March 25 that we would take time each day to pause and reflect upon the following passages of scripture. This is

to ensure that we are spiritual in tune for renewal. Please read and reflect upon these passage during those days.

Transforming Lives Through Christ’s Power – John 20:21

Day 1: Read John 20:24-31 – Pray for your belief in God to transform you.

Day 2: Read Romans 4:18-25 – Pray for hope to believe and to be fully persuaded regarding God’s power.

Day 3: Read Psalm 24 – Pray for a desire to seek God’s face and not just God’s hand.

Day 4: Read Psalm 89:1-8 – Pray and thank God for God’s great love.

Day 5: Read 77:10-20 – Pray and meditate on God’s great deeds.

Day 15: Read Isaiah 41:8-10 – Pray for God to strengthen, help, and uphold you with God’s righteous right hand.

Day 16: Read Isaiah 26:1-9 – Pray for a steadfast mind that trusts in God.

Day 17: Read 2 Chronicles 16 – Pray for a heart fully committed to God.

Day 18: Read Psalm 95 – Pray to hear God’s voice and not harden your heart.

Day 19: Read Jude 17-25 – Pray to be built up in your faith, looking to God to keep you from falling.

Martin Luther King, Jr. made a difference in the

world, including FBCCH. Our vision statement tells

us the importance of building lives. Paul's letter to

the Ephesians, a "prison epistle" says that the church

is called to build lives for God's kingdom. We are

here tp build lives and to glorify God. (Ephesians

4:11-13)

1) Collective responsibility. Each of us should do

his or her part towards building lives. Show that you

care about others; respond to the needs of others.

2) Lives that are quality. Works of service,

performed well, help to improve the quality of what

we are doing. We must offer God our best service.

3) Purpose of God. Glorify God; shine the light for

Him. Use the gifts that He has given us to fulfill His

purpose. Work to give honor and glory to Him.

The church has to be about the business of restoring

lives and bringing people back into a right

relationship with God and with each other. To

restore means to ‘bring back’ to the right place.

Some people have become disconnected with the

faith, maybe because of the sins of others, or

because of their own sins, their difficult decisions,

or their embarrassing habits.

The story in John 8:1-11 is not to justify sin, or the

sins people commit. It is to help us understand that

too often, we create barriers that keep people from

being restored. The intent of people connected with

the church must be to restore lives. Point 1. To restore lives we must see their

humanness. Regardless of what a person had done Jesus Christ

looked at their humanness. We must not overlook

the virtue and integrity of others, regardless of their

past sins or actions. Even when our moral codes are

correctly applied, we must see all persons as

valuable, justifiable human beings worthy of

dignity and compassion. Point 2. To restore lives we must be their

advocate. We all need somebody who will stand up on our

behalf. We cannot be indifferent to people who

cannot speak for themselves either because they are

unwilling, unable, or ill-equipped to do so, at a time

when their lives have been broken. It is our duty to

stand firm as we fight for others, pray for them,

support them, believe in them, and help them to

restore their relationship with Jesus Christ and with

others. Point 3. To restore lives we must help them

find their way. We must be intentional in helping those who are

trying to find their way once they have taken a

wrong turn on their spiritual journey. The church

must be the compassionate, understanding, and

restorative institution to those who are hurting,

struggling, and searching to find their way back to

Jesus Christ.

Pastor Smith, began by providing a historical

perspective of the scripture selected as background

information for his message which was Ezekiel

Chapter 37. Those present were prodded to live life

to it’s fullest; even when trouble shows up. Take

the risk to serve and trust Him. Life and living can

be draining; but, God/Christ Jesus still blesses His

Children in ways that are immeasurable.

The three take a ways were as follows:

1. Live a revitalization life. God/Christ Jesus word

is important and he wants humankind to make Him

a priority in life and living. Prayer is equally

necessary and is another source of strength. Read

Psalms 139 and Proverbs 12: 24 which states “The

hand of the diligent shall bear rule; but, the slothful

shall be under tribute.” (KJV)

2. Live a revitalization life is more than looking

right, it is being right. No, that does not mean

mankind/womankind/childkind are perfect; but, it

does mean having a spirit to look and be right.

Allow and receive the holy spirit of God/Christ

Jesus in one’s life is essential.

3. Live focused on God. God/Christ Jesus knows

how to see His people through all situations of life

and living. God/Christ Jesus needs to be the center

of each individual’s life. God/Christ Jesus is

present in good times and difficult times of life and

living. He protects His people from evil and

temptations that can take one off course. Finally,

those present were reminded to have a talk with

Jesus because he died and rose on the 3rd day that

each person could have access to a life of salvation

in eternity. Amen, Amen, & Amen.

All that we do as a church must be done through Jesus

Christ. Church work means to function as a church.

The work of the church is to do what needs to be done

for the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.

1) Keeps us grounded. Paul wrote the book of

Colossians while he was in prison. There needs to be a

desire to continue a new relationship with Jesus Christ.

The faith journey must continue past its start. Jesus

will keep us, but we must put Him above our worldly

distractions. Be steadfast; "press on"; be grounded in

Jesus Christ.

2) Transformative power. Strengthening our faith

changes us and makes us who God wants us to be. We

see things as Christ wants us to see them; we change

our responses according to Him. To be a Christian

includes a struggle with things that

are not right in our lives.

3) Surplus of Thanksgiving. Doing things in our lives

through Christ means being thankful more than being

dissatisfied. God helps us to find many things for

which to be grateful.

Experiencing God as Abba (Part 1) The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought

about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba,Father.” ~ Romans 8:15

As I sat one night at Urbana 2000, a student missions conference, I wept as I listened to the words from the song, “He

Knows My Name”, originally written by Tommy Walker. Months leading up to that night, God had been inviting me into

a deeper level of relationship and intimacy, but I was extremely resistant. I was broken…childhood hurt had erected walls

around my heart. No one, not even God, could penetrate. But that night, before the song started playing, I heard God

whisper to me, “I want to be your dad, will you let me?” I responded, “No, I already have a dad who I want to be my

dad.” At that time, my experience with my dad was that he was very distant and I didn’t want another distant dad, not

even God.

I believe that our childhood experiences with parental figures shape how we see and experience God. I didn’t really

believe God wanted to know me, Joe Ella the person, but more so wanted to ensure I was on the right path of obedience. I

had already recommitted my life to Jesus as Lord in 1997. I didn’t want another dad to keep me on the right path, I wanted

a dad to know me and laugh with me, sharing my life with me. I wanted my dad to be my dad. I grew up in what I would

call a stable home life: two-parent home, with my mom as domestic engineer and my dad the breadwinner. I only lived in

two houses, we always had utilities, the phone was always in service, I never came home to an empty house, never missed

a meal, our schedule was very routine involving a lot of church activities. As our main caregiver, my mom always tried to

spend 1/1 time with each of us, even if that was just a ride to the grocery store alone with her.

I saw my dad as busy saving the world for God, often missing our activities because of ministry. Love was expressed

through provision not words of love or hugs; crying and vulnerability was seen as weakness. The first time I heard my

parents tell me they loved me was when they dropped me off at UTK my freshmen year in college. I didn’t even know

that my childhood hurt of wanting to be loved by my dad scarred me. It hurt that other youth in church and the

community, without fathers in their homes, would talk about how great my dad was and how they appreciated how much

he was there for them, but when he was home with us he was tired and distant. He taught us to stick together and be proud

to be a Darby, but rarely did he laugh or was present with us; he was a strict disciplinarian. I resented my dad, God, and

“ministry”.

In undergrad, I would hear my friends talk to their parents and say I love you like it was normal. They would also tell me

they loved me and I would respond with “thank you”. I mean, in my defense, I didn’t know what to say back because I

didn’t really know what that word meant.

Well that night at Urbana, before the song ended, I heard the Lord whisper, “I love you. Trust me”. Through my tears,

God had created a window in one of my walls that allowed me to accept God as Father. Afterwards, the speaker spoke

about our spiritual adoption into Christ’s family. That night was transformative and I began a new journey of healing with

God as Abba. And to my delight, a couple of years later, that decision opened a door for my dad and I to begin a new

journey of healing. God’s grace allowed me to join my dad on his journey of learning how to be present with his own

children, seeing us as his ministry. He asked each of us for forgiveness and spent the last 15 years or so getting to know

each of us, helping to heal us, love us, and enjoy us. My depth of knowing God as Abba is my strength, as I now trust

Abba this new season without my earthly father.

In seminary, I was taught about using inclusive language for God. Although I agree on one level of its importance and

publicly try not to limit God to a specific gender, on another level, I know the value of being intentional and creating

space for God to be God, even as Father. Whether one says father, mother, sister, brother, or friend, I just want everyone

to know God personally and intimately. Next month we will take a brief theological glance at God as Abba.

Our Church Vision Statement

First Baptist Church, Capitol Hill is Building, Restoring, and Revitalizing lives through Jesus Christ.

Looking for a Church Home? If you are looking for a church home, we encourage you to come and visit us! There are several ways to become a

member of FBCCH.

Baptism - when a person is willing to initially express a belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and is willing to

live one’s life according to His will. Baptism is the symbolic initiation into the Christian faith.

Christian Experience - when a person who has previously been a member of another church chooses to unite with

FBCCH, believing this to be the place for one’s spiritual nurturing. These people have already been baptized and

have committed a faith relationship with Jesus Christ.

Watchcare - when a person wishes to have his or her membership with FBCCH while he or she is temporarily living

in the city.

Associate - when a person who has a membership in another church wishes to have a membership in FBCCH.

Restoration - when a former member chooses to rejoin FBCCH. Scheduling Access to Church Buildings To all groups needing entry and use of the church, sanctuary, and Ennix-Jones Center during the week, please call the church office at 615-255-8757 in advance of your event. This is to ensure personnel are available to allow entry and to have a record for security purposes. Your cooperation is highly appreciated.
