Jobs Without College

By: Sam Cowick

The time to try for21st Century Academies has come and gone .

A lot of students here at SFT didn’t apply for an academy and that’s

okay. Academics aren't always the best for everyone. There are jobs

that only require a high school education that pay better than jobs that

require a college education.

One job that doesn't require a degree is as an auto mechanic. If

you like manual labor and know the ins and outs of cars, then this may

be the job for you. According to the Federal Bureau of Labor, the

average salary of an auto mechanic is $42,090. That is almost as much

as an elementary school teacher. Another option is to enlist in the

military . While it is one of the more dangerous jobs, you get a lot of

benefits. The government covers most of your insurance, if you live on

the base, you don’t have to pay taxes on your house, and you get to

travel all over the world. There are many different types of jobs as well.

There are five different branches including The Marines, The Army, The

Navy and The Air Force and the Coast Guard. There are many ins and

outs to this path in life, so if this sounds like something you would enjoy,

there are a lot of places you can find information about this career path.

If you don’t like the sound of manual labor, there are other jobs

for you. If you want to fly in the sky, then maybe you would like to be a

commercial pilot. You would have to do six to eight weeks of training,

but after that, you could make up to $121,430 a year. Being a

commercial pilot entails a lot of responsibility. You have to work long

hours, sometimes overnight, and the safety of the passengers on the

plane is up to you. So, if that doesn't sound like something you would

enjoy, it's probably not the best job for you. Maybe, you are a

modern-day Sherlock Holmes. If so, you could try your luck as a

detective. Detectives gather evidence to catch criminals, from petty

thieves to high profile robberies. You would have to have a stomach of

steel though, because you may see a few gruesome crime scenes in

your career. But, if you have the wits and the stomach for it, you could

make up to $65,170.

So, if you don’t think that college is in your best interest , do not

worry because there are other options. The jobs I suggested today are

only a few of the options. You can look for yourself and find jobs that

may suit you. Either way, don’t worry, you can make it, even if you don’t

have a college degree.

Decade Wars: 80s vs 90s

By: Sam Cowick

Decade Wars is when two decades go up

against each other to decide which was the best

decade for pop culture. This match-up we have the

1980s vs the 1990s. T hey will compete in rounds

for best music, best movies, and best fashion . It is

up to you to decide which decade wins the match.

Let's begin.

In the first round, we have music. The 80s

are up first, bringing some classics like the melodic

“I Wanna Dance with Somebody” by

Whitney Houston, the inspiring “Don’t Stop

Believing” by Journey and the iconic “Living on a

Prayer” by Bon Jovi. It’s the 90s turn and they bring

some nostalgic wonders to the table such as, the

easily recognizable “This is How we do it” by

Montell Jordan, the time-honored “U Can't Touch

This ” by MC Hammer and the upbeat “Wannabe”

by the Spice Girls. It's up to you to decide which

decade has the best songs. One may win, one may

lose, or it might be a tie! Either way, a point will be

given to the winner.

For the second round, we have movies. The

90s are up first this time and they have some very

good entries. The 90s bring the first ever

completely computed animated movie, Toy

Story, the Christmas trademark film, Home

Alone and the colossal success, Jurassic

World. That is some serious competition for the

80s, but the 80s have some heavy hitters as well.

The first up is the Karate Kid, a 1980s staple. Next,

we have The Shining, which since its release has

been a defining movie for the horror genre. The

final movie is The Goonies, a fond childhood

memory for whomever grew up in the 80s.

The last category is fashion . Once again,

the 80s are up first, bringing bright colors and big

hair. The main shirt style was bright and hanging off

your shoulder. For pants, you would wear some

brightly colored jeans and for accessories,

scrunchies were the way to go. The 90s will have to

bring a big game if they want to beat the colorful

climate of the 80s. The 90s “grunge”

fashion included shirts with a band or logo on them,

oversized pants, and an accessory that would tie

the look together, whether it’s a hat, bag or even

both.

Decade Wars: 80s vs 90s cont.

That concludes the first decade wars.

Whether you chose the 80s as the winner, or the

90s, both decades got to show off their best

qualities. If it is still a tie, you can look up more about

each decade, and choose the decade wars

champion.

Kamala Harris – Vice President

By: Selam Akalu

Kamala Harris ran for the Vice Presidency

and succeeded to become the first ever woman

and the first women of color to be Vice President.

The Women’s Suffrage Movement helped with this

because back than women fought for the right to

be equal to men.

As they fought for their rights and

succeeded, many women started to become

mayors, lawyers, government officials etc. This

has led women to do what they desired, including

Kamala Harris running for the Vice Presidency.

Kamala Harris was born in Oakland,

California on October 20, 1964. Her parents

immigrated from India and Jamaica, making her

Jamaican American and South Asian American.

Kamala Harris graduated from Howard University

and the University of California. Her parents were

activists, which gave her a sense of justice and

knowledge.

Vice President Harris also worked in the

Alameda County District Attorney’s Office where

she prosecuted criminals for sexual assault

against children, gang violence, and drug

trafficking. Before becoming Vice President, Kamal

Harris was a U.S. Senator from 2017 to 2021. In

addition, she was the Attorney General of

California. She also ran to be the Democratic

Party's nominee for President before she became

the Vice-Presidential running mate to President

Biden.

Kamala Harris made her way up in the

government arena and now she has become Vice

President of the United States. If she can get as

far as she did, just imagine what you can do.

Throwback to 2010 Shows!

By: Selam Akalu

Some of the best shows that we have grown

up with first appeared in 2010 and were made by

companies like Nickelodeon and Disney. What are

these shows, you ask? Well, here you go.

Disney had many hit series in the 2010s like

Wizards of Waverly Place, which was a well-known

show. The cast was amazing and in the lead roles

were Selena Gomez and Alex Russo, who did an

amazing job in those roles. Gomez’s acting and her

personality in the show were amazing. It was

hilarious and made the whole show better. Another

show that everyone watched was Hannah Montana,

one of the best shows created in 2010. Miley Cyrus

played the title role of the character perfectly, and

the songs were remarkable as well.

Nickelodeon also made many series in the

2010s that people still watch today. Nickelodeon

created the series Victorious, a show where the

songs were wonderful and very catchy. It was very

humorous and was entertaining to watch. Another

show made by Nickelodeon was iCarly; it was a

funny show about best friends making videos. A

show that connected Victorious and iCarly was the

show, Sam and Cat. The leading roles of Sam and

Cat were from Victorious and iCarly. This show was

incredible and was fun to watch and if you haven't

watched it, I highly recommend you do.

Series from the 2010s were some of the best

shows we have grown up with and we hope to see

more shows coming like these in the future. This

was only a tiny bit of this collection; there are way

more out there.

Corona Virus Vaccine

By: Sophia Lee-Dijols

The coronavirus has a new vaccine. Is it safe?

The covid-19 vaccines are safe and very effective in

fighting the corona virus in your body.

However according to www.cdc.gov , when you

get your second shot you will have side effects such as

pain and swelling in the arm where you got the shot, a

fever, chills, and you will feel very tired and worn

down. With that second shot.

Therefore, you may have some side effects

when the mRNA is being put into your cells but after

the cell breaks down and gets rid of the mRNA soon

after. According to www.health.harvard.edu, “mRNA

vaccines for COVID-19 contain man-made mRNA.

Inside the body, the mRNA enters human cells and

instructs them to produce the "spike" protein found on

the surface of the COVID-19 virus. Soon after a cell

makes the spike protein, the cell breaks down the

mRNA into harmless pieces. At no point does the

mRNA enter the cell's nucleus, which is where our

genetic material (DNA) lives.”

From January 14th to February 17th up to

400,000 vaccines were given. The first in line that got

the covid vaccine was health care workers, and

residents of long-term care facilities, next were people

75 and up and front-line essential workers and

teachers.

Later, Johnson and Johnson created a third

vaccine that only contains one shot. “This vaccine is

made up of a specific type of virus called adenovirus

type 26 (Ad26). The vaccine uses Ad26 to deliver a

piece of the DNA, or genetic material that is used to

make the distinctive “spike” protein of the SARS-CoV-2

virus.”- According to www.fda.gov. After you get this

shot, you will still have the same side effects. Like

feeling worn down, swelling in the arm, a fever, and

chills. Do you think this shot will work to stop covid?

We can all only hope!

frequently with new releases. Even if the list is updated

and they are no longer on their top 10 list, you can still

find all these movies and shows on Netflix. They say

that the top 10 feature is to show what people are

watching. The top 10 list is a great way to see what’s

trending and what is most popular.

SFT Believe It or Not v2

By: Sam Cowick

In the second edition of SFT Believe It or

Not we are looking at the students for their

breathtaking talents. With 71 entries, you can

imagine that it was hard to choose what to include

in this edition of “SFT Believe It or Not”. The most

unique abilities were chosen but thank you to the

many people who submitted their talent for solving

Rubics cubes and drawing. Both are very

impressive, since I can do neither.

The first “believe it or not” comes from

Kiersten Blake, who can dance ballet and play the

cello. Kiersten has been practicing ballet for an

entire year and has been playing cello for two

years. According to Kierstan, it is very enjoyable.

The next “believe it or not” is from Gretchen

Kostreva, who competes in gymnastics. Gretchen

has quite a resume, with 4 events floor, beam,

bars, and vault. She has a routine and goes to

many different places to compete. Gretchen

practices twice a week for three hours.

The third “believe it or not” was submitted

by Chase Becker, who designs robots. Chase

says he can design little robots and robotic things.

Who knew we had the next Elon Musk right here

at SFT? The fourth “believe it or not” belongs to

Andrea Cerna, who does flower art. Andrea says

she can draw realistic flowers. The final “believe it

or not” goes to Kaitlin Christenson, who can play

the piano. Kaitlin began playing piano early last

year, when Covid hit. Kaitlin says she can play lots

of song genres but prefers to play popular songs.

That concludes the second edition of SFT

Believe It or Not. If you submitted talent and didn’t

get in, don’t worry, I saw all of them. All the talents

that were submitted were incredibly impressive.

Stay tuned for the next edition of SFT Believe It or

Not.

Covid’s Smackdown on Teen’s

By: Sophia Lee-Dijols

How covid is affecting teens in 2020 and

2021 has been a huge topic of discussion. Covid,

as we know, has a significant impact on the world

in general, but how did it impact teens and their

future outcomes in life?

Personally, as a teen, covid has had a

significant impact on me. When covid first started,

it seemed unreal and hard to understand. In the

beginning, I thought this was not going to stop me

from going out and hanging out with my friends.

But then, restrictions were put in place about what

we could and couldn't do.

My mom was constantly reminding me to

sanitize and wash my hands and to not forget to

wear a mask everywhere I went. For the teens that

typically do things outside of school, summer was

hard because sports were cancelled. So, you

would have missed a season or two, which was

hard because all that does is make athletes out of

shape and caused athletes to become less active.

If you didn’t do sports, there were other fun

activities like swimming pools and summer camps

that were also closed. All teens really did was play

video games, read, go outside, or be on our

phones. But once things started opening again,

teens had more things to do. Life is slowly starting

to go back to normal.

Truth or Dare?

By: Jai Twaddle

How to Play- “Truth or Dare” is one of the all

-time classic party games—and a great way to get to

know your friends better. You need to have at least

2 people to play. The game is simple: players take

turns asking one another “truth or dare?” If they

choose the truth, they must answer a question of the

asker’s choosing, and if they choose a dare, the

person must complete the dare that was asked.

Here are some examples of “Truth or Dare.”

Funny Truths- How many selfies do you

take a day? What is the longest time you went

without a shower? What is one funny thing you

cannot get out of your head? What is the most

embarrassing top play song that you listen to? What

is your worst habit? Who is the person you text the

most? If you could be invisible, then what would be

the first thing you would do? When was the last time

you lied and what was it about? What was your

favorite childhood show? Where are you ticklish?

Serious Truths- What was the biggest lie

you ever told your parents? What was the weirdest

thing you have ever eaten? What was the strangest

dream you ever had? What is your biggest

insecurity? What was the meanest thing you said to

someone else? Have you ever faked a sickness to

get out of something? If so, what was it? Have you

ever used a fake ID? Have you ever lied about your

age? Who is the one person in the world you know

the most?

Funny Dares- Eat a teaspoon of mustard,

Lick a bar of soap, Bark like a dog, do a plank for a

minute, empty a full cup of water on your hands for a

full minute, do 20 jumping jacks, pour a cup of water

on your head, eat a spoonful of ketchup, go outside

and pick 40 blades of grass, attempt to do 4

cartwheels, do a freestyle rap for a minute.

Serious Dares- Eat a banana without using

your hands, let a group of people put full makeup on

you, smell another players armpit, talk in a British

accent on your next turn.

Truth or Dare?, cont.

The History of Truth or Dare- The game

was created in 1712. The commander bids their

subjects to answer a question which is asked. The

game was created in England was called “Question

Answer”. Truth or Dare is now a popular game

around the world to play with friends and family.

Would you do any of these Truths or Dares?

It’s Calling for You!

By: Sophia Lee-Dijols

Two brands of phones that we know sell out

the fastest and bring a lot to the table are Apple and

Samsung. Apple and Samsung have been rivals for

years. Both Apple and Samsung are always coming

out with modern technology, more cameras and

higher data and speed. Trying to prove the new

creation is better.

Recently Apple came out with a new iPhone

12 which is 6.1” Super Retina XDR display and an

iPhone 12 mini which is 5.4” Super Retina XRD

display which presents organic light through the

phone. The iPhone 12 was rated 4 out of 5 stars. It

was not rated five stars because it only had 64.GB of

base storage, 60 Hz display, no charger or

headphones in box. But the digital camera zoom

could still use work. This new iPhone has already

proven to have a good OLED display, and to have a

strong A14 bionic processor, and we cannot forget

the camera upgrades, with up to three cameras!

People love to get their hands on the iPhone 12

because they support newer and faster 5g networks

and have better cameras, great screens, and

updated designs.

The rating that the Samsung S21 got was

also 4 out of 5. This Samsung was rated a 4

because It has no MicroSD support, the screen is not

the best, and there is no charger in the box. The

newest Samsung is the Galaxy S21. The S21

Samsung’s screen size is 6.2’’and weighs 6.07

ounces. People would love to get their hands on the

Samsung galaxy S21 because it has extra battery

life, and overall is good for an upgrade.

These two phones are what everyone wants

now but do not be shocked if they come up with

something more HighTech. The iPhone 12 is at a

price of $799 and Samsung is at $799 also. Which

phone would you choose, the iPhone 12 or the

Samsung S21?

Encouraging Words, cont.

Here is what we need to tell ourselves every

day: Today I will smile, today will be hard or easy,

either way I am alive, and I made it through the day

again! That is why encouragement is important!

Encouraging Words of Advice

By: Vivian Estefes

The world has difficulties, especially when it

comes to our own human feelings. Therefore, it is

important to have empathy, kindness and love for

yourself and others. When talking about your

feelings, it is not easy. Preacher, Robert J. Morgan

said, “You can get lost in life, or life is just messed

up, but there is always little faith to give you strength

in life”. It is not just how you feel about yourself and

your lifestyle, it is also about how you feel about

your steps before you start, you first must ask

yourself if this is how you want things to go. This is

just what it means to look at your future.

People pull themselves down by hating

themselves. It does not matter what people think, it

matters what you see in your future. Always stay

positive! Through personal experience, I have felt

hate, but I remind myself that this is my life and not

others’, therefore I don’t hate or talk about other

people. The quote “action speaks louder than words”

means what you are doing is stronger than what you

are saying. In other words, it doesn’t cause drama;

many young people hate dramas, which is why there

are difficulties. You do not always have to be

involved in everything, but if you are, at least think

before you do or say, because it will affect a

person's reaction and the relationship so that is why

kindness is important for yourself and others!

According to “Random Acts of Kindness” on

twitter, “it is important to share kindness because it

is not simply good for others; it is also good for you”!

Giving a smile to others is amazing because you can

make the world a better place by your actions. Yes,

the world is dark but small light can be so bright, and

it is hard to focus because the internet says that

there is two percent of this world that is good which

mean 98% is dark, but with kindness and love we

can make it brighter and make the two percent into a

50% or higher. How can you make it better? You

may have doubts or negative thoughts, but that is

okay and that is why encouraging words exist.

Instead of saying no to yourself, keep saying yes.

Yes, you can do it, and arduous work is all it takes. If

you could learn how to walk as a baby, then know,

you can learn how to work; doubting yourself will not

help.

TikTok

By: Maria Mendoza

You have heard about TikTok. It's an app

on IOS and android. If you have not heard about

TikTok, I’m here to give you the basics.

TikTok was launched in September 2016 in

China, and then it went internationally in

September 2017. TikTok has always been popular.

Everyone thought TikTok was a joke at first. It

looks a lot like Vine; you can make short videos

with music, filters and other features. Gen-Zer's

have taken over the app.

There are over 800 million people on the

app. With this app, you can share and make videos

with your friends; you can also become popular on

the app. If your TikTok’s have over one million

views you will start to get paid. TikTok was the

second most downloaded app worldwide until now.

By 2020, it was the number one app downloaded

worldwide. So, if you are bored and don’t know

what to do, download the app.

What Shoes are Trending?

By: Leeland Barth

As we begin a new year and a new fashion

season, we ask, “what is this year's fashion in

footwear?” Last year in the shoe category we saw

“Air Forces” and the “Diordan” but what is big now?

Like every year, the Crocs, the Vans, and

Converses, are always big. But there are always hot

shoes like the Nike SB Dunk Low Travis Scott’s that

took America by storm in 2020, As for the Adidas

Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Carbon’s they tend to be very

underrated shoes. With their orange frame and

green outline, they are perfect for shoes.

Also, the Nike SB Dunk Low Ben & Jerry's

Chunky Dunky are from the inspiring desks of Ben

in Berry's ice cream. It is a “colorful jar of ice cream”

as a collaboration with Nike to create a style of shoe

that they felt was exactly right for them and with

Nike’s help they formed their shoe.

Nike Air Jordans are always in style,

especially in 2021 since people ages 1-80 are

wearing them after the first style was introduced on

November 17, 1984. Air Jordan’s are selling over 17

million pairs off eBay alone.

This is my list of the top trending shoe’s.

Which ones of these do you have or want to try?

NFL Sports

By: Leeland Barth

As we know, we are lucky that we were able

to witness the NFL season this year after covid made

everything stop. With this season, we saw many

wonderful things happen. The Kansas City Chiefs

made it to Super Bowl 55 even though they lost to

the Tampa Bay Buccaneers they still made it. That is

something to be happy about since both of their

playoff games were nail biters. Following a 22 to 17

win against the Cleveland Browns, they went on to

beat the Buffalo Bills 24 to 38.

In other important NFL news, the New

Orleans Saints took on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

in a good game, but the Buccaneers took the upper

hand in the showdown ending in a 30 to 20 win for

the Buccaneers. This win might be sad news for the

Saints as their starting 42-year-old quarterback,

Drew Brees, might be done for the Saints

organization after a 14-year run and a Super Bowl

win.

The Green Bay Packers were also in the NFL

playoffs but sadly had their hopes cut short after only

one playoff win this season losing to the Tampa Bay

Buccaneers 31 to 26 in round two of the playoffs.

Thereby kicking Green Bay out of the playoffs and

only two teams left, the Kansas City Chiefs and the

Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Super Bowl 55 was meant to be an excellent

matchup between the Bucs and the Chiefs.

However, at half time, it did not look so good for the

Kansas City Chiefs, being down 28 to 9. It did not get

better after halftime as quarterback Patrick Mahomes

was sacked a total of three times and threw two

interceptions. Ending in a 31 to 9 game with the

Tampa Bay Buccaneers as World Champions of the

NFL. Now, it may not have been a pretty game for

the Chiefs but there is always next year.

Student Pet Peeves

By: Vivian Estefes

We all have things that we like and dislike, and

sometimes those are our pet peeves.

In school, students say they hate it when

people expect the worst of you or act negatively with

you. Of course, a lot of people would dislike the mean

acts. If I were them, I would agree, because I would not

like someone being rude if I did not do something

wrong to them, or even meet them!

Another pet peeve could be connecting with

other people. Some students say they hate it when

people try too hard to be a better person. Kenna

Ratzlaff is a student who has claimed to hate being

bothered by other people. A person being bothered by

nonsense, like drama, could make them feel bad for

causing them to feel angry or sad. This leads to drama

and being bothered can cause trouble.

School is something we argue about

sometimes. In my perspective, I see school as a job.

But I still had trouble with homework, having all the

materials, and turning my work in on time. School can

be a pet peeve many people deal with, especially when

it can be hard. One pet peeve is homework, turning in

our homework and losing points for not showing work

and having a bad grade because you missed an

assignment. Homework is one piece, but another could

be responsibilities, yes responsibilities. They are

important but can also be annoying. You must

remember what you have to do, schedule events, and

remember where you have to be. Imagine the first day

of school like the places and things you have to have

ready seems pretty hard, for instance the first year

going into middle school or high school.

What about outside of school? Outside of

school, things can happen. For example, family and

friend problems, life events. So many things can

happen in life, which is hard, and sometimes you must

miss school days for it. That trauma can affect your

emotions, and when a teacher notices that you are

crying, it can bring attention to yourself. For me a lot of

attention is too much to handle, which leads to social

anxiety. These pet peeves make me understand each

and every student!

Football or Basketball?

By: Jai Twaddle

The History of Basketball

Springfield College alumnus James Naismith

invented basketball on campus as graduate student

at the college in 1891. In 1893, the first international

basketball match was organized. Members took the

Basketball was built into the fabric of Springfield

College. The game was invented by Springfield

College instructor and graduate student, James

Naismith in 1891.

The History of Football

The sport of American football was relatively

new in 1892. On November 6, 1869, Rutgers and

Princeton played what was billed as the first college

football game. The popularity of college football has

grown in the United States during the first half of the

20th century. Several of the oldest examples of

football- like games include the Greek game called

Episkyros and the Roman game of Harpastum.

How Many NBA and College Players Play

basketball?

In the NBA, which stands for the National

players and in NCAA, which means National

Collegiate Athletic Association, there are 18,816

players.
