One shore represents the world we are in, and the other shore “Higan” represents Amida Bud- dha’s Pure Land. The river represents the bad mind we all possess. The concept is that we practice the teaching to reach the other shore across the river. We have two Higan seasons in a year. One in spring, the other in autumn, as Higan is held during the week of the spring and autumn equinox. Shan Tao, one of the highest ranking priests of Jodo Buddhism in China said that the sun sets due west during the equinox thus it is a good opportunity to think about Buddha’s Pure Land which exists far away in the west, as well as appreciate our ancestors who are also there. Please join us for our Higan-e service and think about Amida Buddha’s Pure Land and our ancestors. What Do We Need to Keep Our Spirits Alive? By Rev. Kanjun Nakano

First, to keep our spirits alive, we must keep our bodies alive. So, we need something to eat. Animals can survive only with food. We human beings, though, need more than food. Then what else do we need? The thing which is absolutely necessary for human beings to live is HEART. Animals live to find food. Animals move by instinct. On the other hand, humans act rationally. Humans feed their bod-ies with food, and sufficient nourishment to their hearts must be provided. However, our hearts will never be satis-fied 100%. We will always have empty places

in our hearts which we cannot fill. We experi-ence many types of emptiness: sadness, strug-gles, disappointments, frustrations, and anger. These places in our hearts may be big or small, and they are complicatedly mixed. We will never be able to fill up those empty places. Buddha is the only one who can re-place the emptiness with satisfaction. Buddha will eliminate any kind f emptiness in your heart. Just give the emptiness of your heart to Buddha. Then say Onenbutsu single-mindedly. Buddha will fill the emptiness of your heart with amazing power.

What is “Perpetual Memorial Service?” (Eitaikyo)

This record of a perpetual memorial ser-vice and is called Eitaikyo in Japanese. When the date of death occurs for a person listed on this record, the ministers pray for that individual during the morning service. The prayers will continue each year for as long as Jodo Mission exists. Anyone can be included in it. You may put your own name on the list, too. This also helps when it is difficult to have memorial services. We also welcome you to attend the morning service at 8:30am.

How to apply Stop by the office, and fill out the applica-tion form. Each name costs $200. After the application is accepted, the name will be listed on the record.

Wedding Services, Baby Blessings, House Blessings are available

upon request.

If you are planning to get married or know someone who is planning a wedding or if you would like to renew your wedding vows, you are welcome to recommend our Temple. To pledge eternal love between husband and wife to Amida Buddha is very important. Baby Blessings: May Amida Buddha’s love surround our children with love. House Blessings: May your new house, apartment, home be blessed. Please call for an appointment.
