Grand Knight’s Message – Joe Burleski Fellow Knights, on behalf of Ascension Council #11139 and the Knights of Columbus we wish you and yours a very Happy Easter! April-June marks the final 3 months of the 2010-2011 fraternal year. Compared to running a mile on a high school track, we are now embarking on the 4th and final lap. We have had a very good and exciting year. We are now giving it our all as we sprint ahead to the finish line. Between now and our June 30 fraternal year "finish line" we have a rich assortment of activities planned. With Easter upon us, our Church Director Bob Moore and others are busy with several key Church activities. Events include our hosting of the annual Altar Server Recognition event on Wednesday, April 13. This is always a special event as we recognize the 200 Altar Servers who support our Parish & Priests. Our Council will also be assisting with Mass on Holy Thursday (April 21) as well as hosting the RCIA reception, Saturday, April 23. Also in April, the Special Olympics will be held at Rockwood Summit High School on Saturday, April 30 (Tim Ferguson coordinator). This is always a fun-filled day with over 20 Council volunteers helping out. In May we will once again be handling the Mothers' Day gift distribution at all Masses (May 8). The final Felice Cuores event (May 14) will be held before the June-August summer break. Bill Lukas continues to lead this event for our Council. The Squires and John Gouveia will host a Squires Dance open to all in the MPR on Friday, May 13. Our Council, along with our Council Director Al Tornabeni and his committees, will be hosting the following events: Parish breakfast on Sunday, May 15 (Chairman John Thompson); our 10th annual Golf Tournament on Monday, May 16 (Chairman Tim Ferguson), and our 1st-ever Bingo Night on Saturday, May 21 (Chairmen Jamie Wright, Gerard Marshall, & Paul Muzik). Our Golf Tournament is our biggest event and fund-raiser of the year. The money received allows us to fund over $40,000 in charitable giving throughout the year. Although we have had good success with the planning and major sponsorship, there is still a great need for golfers, auction gift donations, hole sponsors, etc. If you haven't already considered signing up to support this event in some capacity please join me and many others as either a golfer, volunteer, dinner guest, or any combination of these. On Wednesday, May 25, over 400 Knights will be attending an Archbishop Prayer Breakfast at Westport Plaza with Archbishop Robert Carlson and KofC Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. The month of May concludes 5th Sunday Mass and Breakfast on May 29 (Peter Nicastro coordinating) and Memorial Day (May 30). Our final event for the fraternal year will be our Annual Installation of Officers Mass & Banquet. Reserve Tuesday evening, June 28, to join us for this event. Additional information and details will be forthcoming. There is certainly much happening over the next 3 months. I am looking forward to reaching the finish line and having a wonderful conclusion to what is shaping up to be a wonderful and productive fraternal year! Community Director - Kevin Hennessey Felice Cuores - Our April 9 dance/party was a real hoot with an enormous number of Hawaiian print

shirts and other Island garb in step with the luau theme. The warm weather helped the ambiance of the evening as 181 enthusiastic guests and 40 volunteer chaperones got into the island mood. Ascension once again was well represented with eight volunteers of which four were "first timers." The final dance of the season will be May 14 with a red, white and blue patriotic theme and a pizza and adult beverage party for volunteers after all guests have left. Volunteers are still needed. To learn more or to volunteer, call Bill Lukas at 636-537-9801.

For the Good of the Order – Thomas Gates Our April speaker will be a representative from the Monarch Fire District. The topic will be "Fire Safety in the Home". The name of the speaker will not be known until the day of our meeting due to unscheduled shift change issues. This should prove to be an interesting and important topic for us all. There will be no speakers for Monday May 23 & Tuesday June 28 due to elections in May and our annual Mass and banquet in June.

Membership Director – Mel Trotier I wish to thank all Brothers and Ladies who helped in some way with the Membership Open House

last month. We had a great response from the Parish and a great turnout from our Council. I want to especially thank those who helped with set up and those Officers and Directors, and others who gave their time during the morning. Thanks to you all! Our Ascension Council First Degree ceremonial team is progressing under the leadership of Brother Peter Nicastro. Having our own team does not preclude taking candidates to other Council's events, it means we can participate as a host and take our turn. It does mean that we will have ceremonies that are convenient following our Open House events which is beneficial. It

appears that our first Exemplification will be in August. If anyone who has not already indicated an interest in participating would like to, or, if you have any questions please contact Peter Nicastro or

myself. We have First Degrees coming up April 12, at the Arnold KofC Hall, and, April 17, at Incarnate Word. Following these we have a ceremony on May 17. All are welcome to escort and support our candidates. It appears the first Second and Third Degree Exemplification will be in September but is not confirmed. More information will be given as it is available. For membership, degree, or, event information, please contact Mel Trotier, Membership Director,

636-530-1496, [email protected]

Youth Director – Rick Dolan Youth Activities including Free Throw Challenge, Poster and Essay Contests have all wrapped up for the year. Over 450 participation certificates were signed and given to all students that participated in the three events. Ascension students and all volunteers should be commended on a job well done. Family Director – Peter Nicastro Family of the Month has more exciting news to relate. At the March meeting, Len & Rita Falk were elected the Family of the Month for April - May. On a record lengthy ballot of nine worthy candidates, Len & Rita received a plurality of 8 of 31 votes. Congratulations to the Falks in joining our illustrious group of Families of the Month. In addition, I was notified by the State Family Activities Director Mike Grayson that John & Faith Gouveia have been selected as the State Family of the Year. The Gouveias will receive an invitation to the State Convention this month in Jefferson City where they will be presented with their award. This month we will select a Family of the Month for June - July, so that we may elect a Council Family of the Year at the May meeting. The annual Knights of Columbus Day at the Ballpark is Saturday, September 24, at 12:10 pm, against the lovable Chicago Cubs. Given that the game will be in late September, the Cubs will inevitably be out of the pennant race. Tickets are $42, including $5 to benefit the Knights of Columbus Developmental Center at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center. For more information, contact Bob Wojciechowski at 728-1261. The next Fifth Sunday is May 30. Additionally, our bylaws require that we attend Mass as a Council sometime during the Easter period. We will be attending the 8 am Mass, and meeting for breakfast afterward. More information will be provided at the May meeting. Fathers for Good is a program instituted by the Supreme Council to help men be better Catholics and fathers. They printed a series of three booklets, A Life of Prayer, A Life of Virtue, and A Man of God, targeted toward all Catholic men. Everyone should have received copies of each via postal mail. In subsequent months, I will feature more articles and commentary from the website. More resources are available at www.fathersforgood.org The annual Family Picnic is Sunday, September 4, at 1 pm, in Bluebird Park.

4th Degree and Honor Guard – Jack Giebe

Columbian Squires – John Gouveia The Squires enjoyed assisting with the setup and take down of the Mother Theresa display on Saturday, despite the snowy weather. I would like to congratulate our only Squire, Andy Hohenberger and his mother, who were brave enough to show up on a very dangerous snowy spring day. I know my guardian angel was watching over me and our Squires as I tried to get to the MPR room early that Saturday, stuck in traffic, decided to take a shortcut across Wilson Rd which then turned into a mini ski slope. Seeing cars stopped in the middle of the road, I went around them not knowing what was ahead. I quickly descended a vertical drop and spun out (180 deg) heading into a Jeep which I miraculously did not hit. Once stopped I managed to turn my van around on the hill and made it safely without a dent on my van to the MPR room in time to help! Praise God for angels! The Squires have booked Car Wash dates at the Mobile on the Run at Clarkson Rd, which will be on the following Saturdays: May 21st, June 4th, July 23rd, and August 20th from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

They are deciding on if they should sell car wash tickets prior to each event and sell them at large along with announcements in the Ascension bulletin. The Squires are enjoying with assisting in all the Stations of the Cross during lent. Two Squires are looking forward to speak at the Knights State Convention at Jefferson City in April while they gear up for their own State Convention in the second week of June. We will be losing our Father Pryor Deacon Henry Purcell this May, who has been very inspirational for us, with as much energy to match too! Deacon Henry has graciously arranged a special evening for our Squires at Kenrick Glennon Seminary on May 6th at 7 pm before the demolition begins to increase space at the seminary. We will miss Deacon Henry and wish him well on his priestly vocation to be ordained and celebrated this May. The Squires anxiously await our new Father Pryor Deacon that will be assigned to Ascension Parish in the near future. May will be extremely busy too and I hope I can keep up with these awesome guys. Tempus fugit!!!

Insurance News – Deacon Mark Guilford May God Bless you and your families, during this Easter Season: Just a note about how I am going to stay in Touch. I have hired Mary Ann who will be calling to set appointments, to do your annual review. These contacts are required for the Knights to keep our fraternal status. Anyone not wanting to meet, need only tell Mary Ann (nicely please), and we will mark our records that we contacted you. For those with Policies I will have updates and current figures and balances prepared for our meetings. All non-insurance members will also be contacted to keep or records current on you and your family. Because life is always changing and the Knights hope to be able to assist you, if you need us. Different stages of Life require different programs. I have also invested in a Newsletter that the Knights assist in publishing. I will have the Council email the PDF to all knights. If you need a hard copy mailed we can make arrangements. I knew how much I loved the KofC but the more of you I meet the more I know God has many plans for the Knights. Thank You for your warm welcome and Please Call if you need anything, from Knights to Church. God Bless Deacon Mark Guilford (314-807-6454 [email protected] )
