STEP 2: AT 7:00PM

ENJOY THE PERFORMANCE!

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Music Ministry Presents

A Summer Musical Experience For Children and Teens

The Lost Boy tells the story of Luke 2:39-52. Mary and Joseph lose track of twelve-year-old Jesus for three days, and when they finally find him, he is sitting in his “Father's house” demonstrating with his questions a great understanding of God. Within the musical is a reassuringly human message: even parents chosen by God can lose a child; even a perfect child can give his parents anxiety. The message is sure to comfort anyone who has ever been a parent, a child, or even those who have misplaced Jesus for a while.

STEP 3: AT 7:30PM

JOIN US FOR DESSERT!

Can you bring a delicious homemade dessert for after the Musical Event? If so, contact Jean

Hi! My name is St. Francis de Sales, and I’m the patron saint of writers. That’s why your Pas-toral Council has picked me as their patron and intercessor in this column which they offer to you. Here we will grow in our appreciation of the Catholic faith through questions and answers. So, I encourage all of you to send me your questions about Catholicism. All questions are wel-comed and all will remain just between you and me (we won’t print your name in the bulletin). Please e-mail [email protected] and each time this column appears, a new question will be answered. So, let’s get started! I’ll pray for you what I pray for everyone: May the Lord grant you His peace!

“Humility is nothing but truth, and pride is nothing but lying” – St. Vincent de Paul Question 5: Is going to a psychic a bad thing, even if it’s just for fun? A while back, a friend asked me what I thought about his wife going to see the so-called Long Island Psychic. I first thought of what God said in the book of Deuteronomy (18:10-12): “Let there not be found among you anyone who . . . consults ghosts and spirits, or seeks oracles from the dead. Anyone who does such things is an abomination to the Lord.” Is it really that bad? Well, our faith teaches us it’s not a good thing to do. First, we have to realize that the Devil is a real created being, not a psychological invention of primi-tive peoples who didn’t know better. He is an angel whom Jesus saw fall from the sky (Lk 10:18) be-cause of his pride in wanting to be like God. Anything we do that might open ourselves up to the influ-ence of Satan and evil spirits is far from harmless entertainment. This can include things like playing with Ouija boards, participating in séances, and going to psychics. A psychic may tell us that our grandfather has a message for us and reveal specific details only our grandfather would know. Now, a fake psychic may have gotten this information from us by asking leading questions, but what about others? They may be real all right but how do we know that they’re actually talking to our grandfa-ther? One tell-tale sign is that “messages” from the dead rarely give glory to God and praise Jesus. If we were really hearing from our grandfather in heaven, don’t we think he would have tons to say about how great Jesus is?

Second, aside from the real and present danger of opening the door to evil spirits, there’s the question of why we would want to do this in the first place. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2116) tells us that even seemingly harmless things like horoscopes and astrology conceal an unholy desire for power over our future by trying to possess knowledge that God has clearly reserved for its proper time. Why do we want to know what thefuture is — don’t we trust God enough to rely on him? Do we want to commit Satan’s sin by trying to be like God by any means possible? Doing these things contradicts the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone. We are not the masters of our fate, as the world tells us; God is. We should put ourselves and our trust confidently into the hands of God. Why walk in twilight when we have Christ our Light? If we want to talk to someone “on the other side,” we should talk to Jesus — that’s what prayer is!

We should always make sure we are giving all due honor and glory to God and to God alone. To read more about this, read articles 2110-2117 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

TAKE A PICTURE WITH FLAT FRANCIS

FAMILY LIFEFAMILY LIFEFAMILY LIFEFAMILY LIFE

Our Family Life Ministry is inviting everyone in the par-ish to get ready for Pope Francis’ visit by giving him a big OLPH welcome! How? By using Flat Francis!

You can download Flat Francis by going to www.olphlindenhurst.org. Then we want all to take pictures of themselves with Flat Francis. We want to see selfies, family pictures, group shots, youth meetings, ministry meetings, music camp, Evening Prayer, choirs and service projects. Send those pictures to [email protected]. Then in September, we’ll gather after the 9:30 A.M. Mass for a video montage of all of the pictures and a brief over-view of why Pope Francis’s visit to the church is so im-portant.

PRAYER AND WORSHIPPRAYER AND WORSHIPPRAYER AND WORSHIPPRAYER AND WORSHIP

HOLY HOUR FOR PEACEHOLY HOUR FOR PEACEHOLY HOUR FOR PEACEHOLY HOUR FOR PEACE In response to Bishop Murphy’s call for parishes to urgently pray for peace because of all the unrest in the world, please join us for a special Holy Hour de-voted to praying for world peace within our own country and throughout the world. This Holy Hour for Peace, with prayers focusing on the intention of peace, will be held on the second, third and fourth Sunday evenings of the month from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The Holy Hour of Reparation which has been held on the first Sunday of the month will con-tinue every first Sunday evening as usual, with the prayers that are usually said for that first Sunday Ho-ly Hour.

Prayer for PeacePrayer for PeacePrayer for PeacePrayer for Peace Following Bishop Murphy’s request, we are asked to pray this prayer privately, and we are encouraged to use this prayer as a part of all meetings and gatherings held here at OLPH.

Lord Jesus Christ, who are called the Prince of Peace,

Who are yourself our peace and our reconciliation,

Who so often said ‘Peace to you’, Grant us peace!

Make all men and women witnesses of truth, justice and brotherly love.

Banish from their hearts whatever might endanger peace.

Enlighten our rulers that they may guarantee and defend the great gift of peace. May all peoples of the earth

become as brothers and sisters. May longed-for peace blossom forth and reign al-

ways over us all. AMEN

Beautiful for GodBeautiful for GodBeautiful for GodBeautiful for God!!!!

Do you like to watch Home and Garden TV? Do you like to arrange and design plants and flowers? Does your house look like a florist? IF so, we may have the ministry for you! Doesn’t our Church look wonderful? It often looks like the “place to be” because of the dedi-cated parishioners who care for the plants and flowers each week. Can you spare some time on a Friday after-noon? Do you like to water, straighten up, clean up, and make our church even more beautiful? THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO DO IT! This is a great opportunity for retired parishion-ers and stay-at-home moms and dads (the kids can help too!) Interested? Please contact Rosaleen Walters at 631.226.3575 for more information.

The Way You Are Dressed The Way You Are Dressed The Way You Are Dressed The Way You Are Dressed DOES MatterDOES MatterDOES MatterDOES Matter!!!!

Please dress appropriately for Mass during the summer months. Attire that is meant for the beach, barbecues, boat or athletic field is inappropriate for Mass and is disre-spectful to the Lord as we offer ourselves to Him through the sacred actions in which we are engaged. It is also disrespectful to one’s brothers and sisters in the community. Your coopera-tion in continuing to dress up and dress ap-propriately for Mass during the summer weather is appreciated.

Faith: the Next Generaon –

Pass It On! Boldly go where many have gone before and help pass on the Good News of Jesus Christ and our Catholic faith! This fall,

over 1150 children and young people, Lev-els 1 through 8, will sign up to learn more

about Jesus and the Catholic faith. At this time, over 120 of these children and young peo-ple have no catechist to teach them. You can help by becoming a catechist for Faith For-mation. As you nurture the faith of our young, you will learn and grow as well! As one long-time catechist put it, “Children are like wet cement, whatever falls on them makes an impression.” We provide you with training, materials, and support. If interested or for

more information, contact [email protected] or call (631) 226-7725.

member of the Catholic Church? What are you waiting for?

What about you or someone you know?

We are in the process of forming a new group of those interested in joining the Catholic Church. We need you to reach out and invite

someone you know who might be considering this and have them contact us here at OLPH!

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS

Freedom of Conscience" definition: The right to follow one's own beliefs in matters of religion and morality.

Oxford Dictionary

Atlanta Fire Chief Fired: Fire Chief Kevin Cochran lost his job because, on his own time, he self-published a men's devotional

book that briefly mentions the biblical view of sex as reserved for marriage between one man and one

woman. Cochran was ordered to complete "sensitivity training" after complaints from activists who

objected to his Christian views. An investigation concluded that Cochran did not discriminate against

anyone but the mayor fired him anyway.

"Your action against Chief Cochran appears to violate fundamental principles of free speech and reli-

gious freedom. The only way Chief Cochran could avoid his views would be to disown his religion..." said Georgia's

congressional delegation. Chief Cochran is appealing his termination. (ADF.org, 4/9/15; washingtonpost.com, 2/8/15)

Supreme Court Victory: A small church in Gilbert, AZ, uses signs to invite & direct the community to its services but was restricted to small, 6

sq. ft. 14-hour display temporary signs while home association 80 sq. ft., political 32 sq. ft., and ideological 20 sq. ft.

signs are permitted for display indefinitely.

In a unanimous decision, the U.S. Supreme Court decisively affirmed that the government cannot play favorites when it

comes to free speech. "The government (ordinance) cannot target one form of speech with severe restrictions while al-

lowing more speech for others in similar circumstances," said Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel, Jeremy

Tedesco. (adfmedia.org, 6/18/15)

Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b

The Book of Joshua presents a narrative of the way the Israelite people took possession of the land of Canaan, making it the land of Israel. Here, Joshua, the successor of Moses, in his farewell speech to the people before his death, reminds them of their solemn covenant with God, that everything they have has been given to them by the Lord and must not be taken for granted. Serv-ing the Lord as the one true and living God means making an absolute, reso-lute, and exclusionary choice. The many clans gathered together into the one people Israel are recognized and each given their own land in which to live and to flourish. But there can no place for their ancient family idols. All must now worship the God of Israel and no other. Ephesians 5:2a, 25-32 or 5:21-32

What does it mean for a Christian to be subordinate to another? If we each out of love for the Lord serve one another and regard others as more im-portant than ourselves, then there should be no fear that one will dominate or take advantage of the other. Rather, then there will be only mutual self-giving. This is the love to be realized in this life in marriage, in the two be-coming one flesh. This is the love to be realized now and throughout eternity in the union of Christ and His Bride, the Church. John 6:60-69

Jesus’ teaching that He is the living bread come down from heaven, and that we need to consume His body and blood in order to have eternal life, proved to be the great test of true discipleship. Those that continued to follow Jesus from this point on did not do so because they understood this teaching. Ra-ther, they resolved to continue to place their faith in Him even though they did not understand.

Gospel Reflection Questions….

After reading next Sunday’s readings and Gospel, take some time to pray on them before you come to Mass. Use the questions below to aid your reflection.

1. Jesus asks, “Do you also want to leave?” If you were there at the time would you be one of the many disciples who returned to his/her former way of life or one that stayed with Jesus? Is there any middle ground here?

2. According to Pope Francis how do we become inserted into Christ’s immense work of salvation? When and how does Christ sharpen our spiritual vision with his love? “Lord, to whom shall we go?” We too, who belong to the Church today, pose this question. Even if it is more hesi-tant on our lips than on Peter’s, our answer, like that of the Apostle, can only be the person of Jesus. Yes, he lived 2000 years ago. But we can en-counter him in our own time when we listen to his Word and are near to him in a special way in the Eucharist. … May the Holy Mass never become a superficial routine for us! May we draw more and more from its profundity! It is precisely the Mass that inserts us in Christ’s immense work of salvation, to sharpen our spiritual vision by his love: by his “prophecy in act” with which, at the Last Supper, he initiated the gift of self on the cross; by his irrevocable victory over sin and death, which we boldly and festively proclaim. “We need to learn how to live the Holy Mass.”
