By stringing over 600 ping pong balls on 10 lines of wire, a canvas is

created that bridges a 62-foot void facing Central Avenue. What is seen on this

canvas at any given time is a combination of the reaction between the

natural elements, the traffic on Central, and the individual human interactions of observers inside the George Pearl Hall

courtyard. The passengers of the cars on Central are unable to see the individual changes and movements in the canvas

but each drive taken past the installation produces a different output. Conversely, observers in the courtyard can actually see these individual movements, due to

wind, a passing bus, or through their own playful interactions.

San Francisco is rapidly on track to become one of the world’s first carbon

neutral cities. The program of the adaptive reuse of an eight story office

building in the city’s financial district is de-signed to help reach this goal. A four story

ramping system allows for the penetration of natural light and for

convinient circulation around a unique hydroponic system that grows produce.

These planters surround an interior core of vertical chicken farms. Classrooms,

offices, storage, composting and production facilities make up the

remaining portion of this urban agricultural system.

The ramped system leads up to the rooftop greenhouse where

hydroponic systems will be able to consistently provide hundreds

of pounds of produce to be taken to local restaurants by bicycle. An output of this hydroponic system

is the creation of fog from the naturally heated water which will help reverse one effect of climate

change in San Francisco:decreased fog cover in the city.

Lomas at the Rail LineAlbuquerque, NM

The proposal seeks to give an identity for a site whose original purpose and identity have been

lost. The modern structure with its rising green landscape will create a destination

point for the people of Albuquerque that is unique to their city. It will jumpstart

pedestrian and bike activity along the rail line corridor, while acting as a place of play and

repose for downtown residents and workers. It is the active, urban landscape that will become

the new Albuquerque rail line.

The Southwestern Brewery & Ice Co. building is located along the rail line in Albuquerque’s theatre and warehouse districts. Although Downtown, the site

is bleak, desolate, and discouraging. The occassional pass of the Railrunner

or vagrant is the only source of activity along the vast span of gravel

between underused buildings. Yet, the gorgeous brick of the brewhouse

and the void around it scream of their potential and yearn for activity.

Base volume of 150,000 square feet corresponding to required square footage and height of programs.

Push and pull volume to adjust to site constraints and existing buildings.

Raise volume to accommodate spaces which require height (natatorium and main gym), and push down down volume where height of program decreases.

Adaptive reuse of Southwestern Brewery & Ice Company building, attaching climbing gym to north and east sides.

Create permeability for public circulation across the site on ground level.

Green space along rail line flows up on the roof of the building creating additional walkable and recre-ational space that is unique for the city.

form diagrams

Green roof has the feel as if it is peeled up from the landscape. Structure for the green roof resembles the rigid roots that are stretched to connect it to the ground plane.

officeincubatorfall 2014

The design of this office incubator involved the research and analysis of

building systems the were best suited to help the building reach net-zero energy

performance in Albuquerque’s unique climate. The courtyard-scheme

building is clad with insulated zinc panels on the east and west, and an operable

metal mesh shading system on the south facades. The south shading system a

vertical glass fins on the north facade provide controlled natural light.

The building’s exterior circulation system along the courtyard reduce the amount

of conditioned space in the building.
