JohnFinneyhasservedformorethan30yearsasDirectorofMusicattheWellesleyHillsCongregationalChurchinWellesleyHills.HeholdsthetitleofDistinguishedArtist-in-ResidenceatBostonCollege,whereheisConductoroftheUniversityChoraleofBostonCollegeandtheBostonCollegeSymphonyOrchestra.HetoursregularlywiththeUniversityChorale,andhasconductedthatensembleinconcertsinmajorcitiesthroughouttheworld,includingRome,Prague,Vienna,Dublin,andBarcelona.Since2013,hehasperformedasharpsichordist/organistandconductorattheacclaimedBachFestivalinBlueHill,Maine. Bernsteincouldhavebeenthinkingofhimselfwhenhesaid:“Everyauthorspendshisentirelifewritingthesamebook”.Hewasanunrelentingandpersuasivecommentatorontheworldinwhichhelived,tirelesslyusinghismanytalentstounderstandthecomplexitiesofhislifeandtimes.Hedeployedmusicandlanguagetodobattlewithanger,doubt,faith,andhumanfrailty.Consequently,therearethemes,melodies,harmonies,andrhythmsthatrecurinhiswork,explodingcomplacenceandsowingbeauty. LeonardBernstein’spersonaandaccomplishmentsmadehimaniconof20thcenturyAmericanmusic.Heissaidtohaveregrettednothavingcomposedmore,buttheconcerthallandmusicaltheaterpieceshedidcreategainedhimconsiderableacclaim.Hissuccessesasapianist,conductor,educator,andsocialactivistfurtherenhancedhiscelebrity. BernsteinwasborninLawrence,Massachusetts,in1918.At13hebegantakingpianolessonsattheNewEnglandConservatoryofMusic,andappearedforthefirsttimeasaconcertpianistat16.ThreeyearslaterhemetAaronCopland(onCopland’s37thbirthday).TheirfriendshiplastedforalmosthalfacenturyandhadasignificantimpactonBernstein’smusicandcareer.At21,hegraduatedfromHarvardUniversitywithaBachelor’sdegreeinMusic,andayearlaterhemadehisfirstappearanceasasymphonicconductorattheTanglewoodMusicFestival.At23,hereceivedhisdiplomainconductingfromtheCurtisInstituteofMusic,andinthesameyearconductedaprofessionalorchestraforthefirsttime–theBostonPops. Bernstein’srelationshipwiththeNewYorkPhilharmonicbeganin1943,whenhesubstitutedforitsconductor,BrunoWalter.HewasappointedDirectorforits1958-59concertseason,becomingthefirstAmerican-bornandtrainedmusicdirectorofamajorworldorchestra.Duringthatseason,heconductedthefirstofhis53CBS-televisedperformancesofthePhilharmonic’sYoungPeople’sConcerts. Aftermorethan1,000performances,Bernstein’stenurewiththePhilharmonicendedin1969.HeconductedtheOrchestraforthelasttimein1989,theyearbeforehediedattheageof72.Hehadbecomeaninternationalsuperstar–arecipientof22honorarydegrees,13decorationsbyforeigngovernments,23GrammyAwards,17Platinum/Goldandinternationalrecordawards,10EmmyAwards,andmanydozensofothertelevision,arts,andcivicawards. Thoughsuchrecognitionmusthavebeenpersonallygratifying,Bernsteinwouldlikelyhavebeenmostpleasedbytheimpactofhismusiconthelivesofgenerationsofyoungpeople,musicians,andmusiclovers.Hisstage,ballet,film,orchestra,andchorusworksaboundwithdynamic,cutting-edgethemesandsound,providingalastingtestamenttohiscompassionategenius.

Mass Bernsteinwrote Mass attherequestofJacquelineKennedyOnassisfortheSeptember1971inaugurationoftheJohnF.KennedyCenterforthePerformingArtsinWashington,D.C.Tohelpwiththelyrics,herecruitedlyricistandcomposer,StephenSchwartz(Godspell and Pippin).Toegether,theyenvisionedafullystaged,dramaticpageant.Thefulloriginalversionfeatured32movements,on-stageandpitorchestramusicians,threechoirs,and20-30soloistspresentinganunforgettablemusicaltheaterexperienceabouttradition,belief,doubt,sacrilege,andblessing.MASShasalsobeenperformedovertheyearsinaconcertsetting.InthisCentennialCelebrationprogram,theHeritageChoralepresentsDoreenRao’s40-minuteadaptationforsoloistsandchorus. ThoughJewishbybirth,BernsteinchosetheRomanCatholicMassforthecontextofhisMASS. Hetransformeda400-yearrite“intoa tense,dramaticdialogwithmusicandlyricsofthe20thcenturyvernacular”2thatechotheturbulenttimesandrestlessyouthcultureofthe1960sandthecrisisoffaithspawnedbytheassassinationsofJohnKennedy,RobertKennedy,andMartinLutherKingJr. Bernsteincreatesacacophonyofcomplaintsthatgrowintoarage,eventuallyarrestedbyaflutesoloandthenasingleclearnote,apreludetoafinaleinwhichthesingerspraiseGodandrequestGod’sblessing.

ThemusicisreminiscentofBernstein’searlyexperiencesatTanglewoodin1941-42,hiscontactswithHindemithandCopland,andjazzelementspossiblyinspiredbytimespentinKeyWest.ItresonateswiththeiconicmelodiesandrhythmsthathavecometotypifyBernstein’swork.
“TAkE CARE OF THIS HOUSE”/”My HOUSE” ThesetwoselectionsarefromlesserknownBernsteinmusicaltheaterprojects.“MyHouse”isfromthelittleknown1950adaptationofJ.M.Barrie’sPeter PanforwhichBernsteinwrotesongsandincidentalmusic.HehadlittledirectinvolvementwiththeoriginalBroadwayproductionthatstarredBorisKarloffandJeanArthur,buthedidwritethemusicandlyricsforsevenofitssongs. “TakeCareofThisHouse”isagemfromthe1976Broadwaymusical1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Afteronlysevenperformancesand13previews,theproductionclosed,thoughthescorebyAlanJayLernerandBernsteinwasreviewedfavorably.

“MAkE OUR GARDEN GROw” In1953,LillianHellmanproposedtoBernsteinthathecreateamusicaltheaterpiecebasedonVoltaire’s1758novella,“Candide”.HisCandidewasfirstperformedin1956,butovertheyears,thepiecewassignificantlychangedbyavarietyofplaywrightsandlyricistswithonlyoccasionalinvolvementbyBernstein.MakeOurGardenGrowsurvivesthesemutations,giftinguswithBernstein’soptimisticresponsetothedoubtsandquestionsthatbothtroubledandfascinatedhimthroughouthislife,infusingthosewhoperformitandthosewhohearitwithasenseofquietgloryandtimelessbeauty.

CHORALE HISTORy — A PROUD TRADITION
82 years young TheHeritageChoralecelebratesits82ndseasonin2018-2019.Thoughmuchhaschangedoverthepasteightdecades,ourresolvetoenrichourselvesandourcommunitywithsongremainsstrong. OriginallynamedtheFraminghamChoralSociety,theChoralewasfoundedinthefallof1937byasmallgroupofFraminghamresidentsonabudgetof$62!ExceptforabrieftimeduringWorldWarII,theChoralehasrehearsedandperformedinFraminghamandnearbycommunitieseversince.Thenumberofsingershasfluctuatedfromagroupof40toourpresentmembershipofabout85frommorethantwodozenMetrowestcommunities.Since1987,we’vebeenledbyMusicDirectorJohnFinney,aidedbyAssociateConductorandAccompanistDarrylHollister.Mr.Finney,partofalongandproudtraditionofoutstandingdirectors—Dr.EdwardGilday(theChorale’sfounder),AllenLannom,JohnOliver,andChrisCarlson—hasencouragedhighstandardsofmusicalexcellenceandledustoaseriesofinvigoratingsuccesses. Duringits82-yearhistory,theChoralehasperformedawiderangeofbothclassicalandcontemporarychoralworks.Initsearliestseasons,itsannualproductionsofMessiahwereperformedtosold-outaudiences.Mostrecently,theChoralehasperformedworksofBach,Handel,Haydn,andFauré,aswellascontemporarycomposersDanielPinkham,MortenLauridsen,RandallThompson,andEricWhitacre. InFebruary,1988,theChoraleaddedaPops-styleconcerttoitsseason.Thislightermusicalfare,oftendesignedaroundthemes,presentspopularpiecesfromopera,movies,andmusicaltheater. AbroadrangeofcollaborationshasenrichedChoraleprogramming.In2015,theChoralecollaboratedwithMonroeCrossing,oneofthefinestBluegrassbandsinAmerica,topresent The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass byCarolBarnett.Laterinthesameyear,theChoralepresentedRutter’sMass of the Children incollaborationwithVOICESBoston,thesuperbchildren’schorusthatfrequentlyperformswiththeBostonSymphonyOrchestra.OurShakespeareandFriendsprogramin2016wasacollaborationwiththeHandelandHaydnSociety’sYoungWomen’sChorus(YWC),directedbyAlysonGreer.TheChoralealsohascollaboratedwithsymphonicgroupsincludingtheNewPhilharmoniaOrchestraforMahler’s Symphony No. 2 andBrahms’ A German Requiem, theWellesleySymphonyOrchestra forBeethoven’s 9th Symphony, andtheBostonCollegeSymphonyOrchestraforMendelssohn’s Lobgesang.
