fields that fell victim to the storm This 24-inchdiameter cement light pole was not pulled fromthe ground but actually broken at the base andsubsequently fell on the field crushing fencing net-ting and bleachers not to mention turf The poleremained on the turf for more than 2 months untilthe cily could find a crane company that was avail-able to lift the poles off the field Shortly after thisphoto was taken the field was rebuilt entirely withvolunteer labor and funds and featured on ABCsExtreme Makeover Home Edition reality showthat aired last March 30 as a rebuilding eilort afterthe Hurricane season of 2005

Rolling revisited

Thanks for your e-mail Sounds likeyour field is typical of a lot of fields Isee You do not say if you thought yourpoor drainage Wall due to the soilscharacteristics or due lO its hardness (or both) Also what iscausing the uneven surfacesbad bounces Is compaction asignificant factor causing your poor turf

If your field is being used a lot then I would recommendaerificatinn as often as possible to alleviate the compactionand improve its drainage characteristics The amount ofdamage from rolling is dependent on a number of things soiltype weight of roller soil moisture when rolled etc

I did a quick search after starting this response and foundthat my colleague at Iowa State Dr Dave Minner wrote inthis space last year (September issue) on this very topic Hegave some information on weight and surface area of rollersA summation statement of his article suggests that undersome circumstances rolling is a necessary and effectivemeans of improving the playing surface of athletic fieldsPerhaps the information provided in the University confer-ence you mentioned was related to more specific situationsthat resulted in some turf rooting problems without consid-ering playability issues

To test my philosophical theory earlier this week Taskedseveral of my colleagues from around the country their opin-ions and experience with rolling Everyone 1 talked to indi-cated they believe rolling athletic fields can be very benefi-cial in moderation In fact one person reminded me thatlightweight rollers are often used to replaced a mowing ongolf greens La smooth the surface and increase ball roll

Rolling once per week has been donewithout any significant detriment tothe green Of course rolling can phys-ically damage grass and can certainlyincrease soil bulk density A higherbulk density translates into harderfields and reduced water infiltration Itsounds like you already have theseproblems but it is still not a reason toeliminate rolling from your culturalpractices especially if you feel that it ismaking a difference in safety of yomfield But do not rely on rolling alone

With rolling you will likely alsoneed to increase your aerification toaddress compaction Be careful to notroll so much that you cause aboveground turf damage and use as light aweight of roller as you can that stillprovides some smoothing benefit

How do you decide whether toroll then aerify or aerify and then

roll Ven it depends on what you are trying achieve andwhat types of aerification and roller you have

I[ your roller is very heavy and does not disperse itsweight well if you aerlfy and then roll you can really rut upa field But if you roll and get the field so compact and thentry to aerify you Illay effectively reduce your aerificationdepth and minimize the benefits of aerificaticn I have seenfield managers use the aerify-then-roll sequence to gel vehi-cle ruts out of fields This sequence is very effective toremove the larger ruts rolls and dips For more minor sur-face disruptions that may reduce field playability or if yOIlhave somewhat loose surface soil conditions roll-then-aertfymay be the better sequence

If you have signifilanl surface unevenness you shouldalso consider a sand topdressing and dragging programRolling alone should not be used to remove large lips anddips If you are trying to remove large surface disruptionsyou are probably relying on an excessively heavy roller Twould avoid using the roller on wet soils and during periodsof time the turf is highly stressed Develop an aerificationprogra11l to address your hardness and infiltration issue thatcomplements your rolling practices Try to use topdressingand dragging for leveling the surface Like most good thingsthat can be bad for yOll in large quantities practice rollingwith moderation And never feel bad for considering playersafety when developing your maintenance practices bull
