John McCormick is Emeritus Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Missouri- Columbia, where he has been on the faculty since 1972. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in organic chemistry and held appointments at the ETH in Zurich and at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, before joining Mizzou, as it is commonly known. His research interests include how molecules are made in nature (biosynthesis), the chemical basis for disease (brown lung disease, biological damage caused by UV light), and new synthetic methods for making organic molecules. Since the availability of the web for teaching, Professor McCormick has taken a special interest in the application of computing to effective, efficient learning. He has advised McGraw Hill on software to accompany their organic chemistry textbooks and is the creator of the ChemCoach software offered by McGraw Hill for teaching synthesis. In 2012, he created the online organic chemistry course offered by the University of Missouri. Professor McCormick has posted on YouTube well over 200 tutorial “screencast” videos, which are heavily viewed worldwide.
