Ohio Valley Entomological Association (OVEA) – OVEA is an association of scientists, academics and students from Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky who meet once a year to provide young professionals (ranging from exceptional high school students through PhD candidates) an opportunity to talk about their research and develop presentation skills in front of a small regional audience. Study Abroad: Monarchs in Mexico - Developed a new short-term study abroad course featuring on-site visits of migratory Monarch butterfly sanctuaries in Michoacan, Mexico. The objective of the course is to learn from direct observations about Monarch winter biology, and their interactions with the surrounding local communities. A pilot visit with graduate students and a faculty member was completed in January 2007. The primary objectives of this short-term course will be to: 1) learn first hand how migratory Monarch butterflies in Mexico interact with their over wintering habitat in an ecologically unique manner, 2) observe in the field to gain an appreciation of the local culture and communities, and 3) examine on-site the growing conflict between conservation efforts to preserve the dwindling Monarch butterfly habitats, and the mounting social pressures from surrounding communities to clear timber on the reserves for economic purposes. The formal course will be offered during the break between fall and spring semesters and be offered for the first time in the 2007-08 academic year. VISITING SCIENTISTS, CONSULTANTS, ASSOCIATE EXPERTS Dr. John Obrycki, 1999-2000 (Iowa State University, USDA IPA Invasive Species) Dr. Olivier Bonato, 1995 (ORSTOM, Visiting Scientist) Dr. Muaka-Toko, 1993-1998 (Consultant) Birgit Kristensen, 1991-1995 (DANIDA, Associate Expert) Dr. Lynell Tanigoshi, 1991 (Washington State University, Visiting Scientist)
