CORRESPONDENCE

CENTENARY OF THE BRITISH ASSOCIATION, 1974

Sir?Although this letter cannot be published until 1975 it was written in 1974?the Centenary Year of the meeting of the British Association in Belfast, for which the Belfast Naturalists Field Club prepared A Guide to Belfast and

adjacent Counties. Some notice of this in this Journal would be appropriate. It was an excellent guide book and lucky are those who have a copy.

There were lively discussions at the 1874 meeting?it was only three years after the publication of Darwin's The Descent of Man. There are numerous plates of

archaeological and historical interest, including nine illustrations of dolmens

(then usually called cromlechs). It was in this Guide that we were told how Dr Buckland, Dean of West

minister, came to hear the word Paramoudras for the big flinty accretions or pot stones found in the chalk of Co. Antrim. He had asked a local quarry man what these objects were called so, having previously been puzzled by long words Dr

Buckland had used, he decided to invent a puzzle of his* own and, as the Guide says "thus they were christened by the Dean."

There was a very good account of the botany of the area, with mention of such interesting rarities as Pilularia, Meconopsis, Subularia, Lathyrus palustris, Pyrola (now Orthilia) secunda and Saxifraga hirculus.

It will be remembered that the BNFC did similar good work in preparing a guide for the 1902 Belfast meeting of the B.A. One hundred years- after the first Belfast Meeting in 1852 (1-8 September, much as at present) there were again members of the BNFC among those who prepared the Scientific Survey.

In 1852 the Field Club had not yet been formed and members of the Belfast Natural History and Philosophical Society played a prominent part. No

comparable Guide was issued but members of the Society acted as Secretaries and read papers, Dr Thomas Andrews was president of the section dealing with

chemistry and mineralogy and Professor William Thompson presided over that devoted to mathematics and physics.

In the 1874 Guide most departments of knowledge were adequately covered, in fact in some areas considerably more detail was given than in later

Guides.?Yours, etc.

Ballintoy, Co. Antrim. C, R. NODDER.

JOHN TEMPLETON'S ANNOTATED COPY OF MONTAGU'S

ORNITHOLOGICAL DICTIONARY (1802)

Sir?In the Proceedings of the Belfast Naturalists' Field Club (series 2), 3 pt. 5: 409-410 there is an interesting though all too brief account of a lecture

by C. H. Waddell on "John Templeton and his Researches" in 1892. Mention is there made of Templeton's own annotated copy of Montagu's Ornithological

Dictionary (1802) then in the possession of the lecturer. The purpose of this letter is to call attention to the existence of this

volume and to ascertain, if possible, its present location.?Yours etc.
