It's Time To Ask!!"What's it made of?"

The "What's it made of?" Initiative (#WHATSITMADEOF) is an ongoing joint program of Sustainable Furnishings Council,American Sustainable Business Council, Center for Environmental Health, Healthy Materials Lab at Parsons School ofDesign, and others to help you ask and find out, "What's it made of?" The purpose is to encourage transparency in oursupply chains and to stimulate innovation to reduce harmful chemical inputs to the manufacture of furnishings. The first step ofparticipating in the initiative is signing The Pledge to ASK, "What's it made of?" whenever you are shopping for furnishingsproducts and materials. The next step is to send your suppliers the Supply Chain Questionnaire. It will help you understandwhat they are providing, and will help them disclose ingredients systematically. This year the initiative focuses on five flameretardant chemicals, fluorinated stain treatments, antimicrobials, vinyl and VOCs including formaldehyde.

Read more about this important ongoing initiative on our website "What's it Made of? Initiative and get started by signing ThePledge to Ask.

Why you need to start asking "What's it made of?" There are more than 80,000 untested chemicals in use today. Many of the most problematic substances in everyday productsare from six families or “classes” of chemicals. When a compound is from one of these classes, we should ask, “Do we reallyneed this chemical? Is it worth the risk?” The Six Classes Challenge is an innovative project that aims to decrease the use of entire classes of harmful chemicals ineveryday products. Applying this visionary approach, major businesses are already beginning to meet the challenge. This couldlead to a dramatic reduction in cancer and in hormonal, neurological, and reproductive impairments for a healthier world.

SOME SOLVENTS

Solvents are a diverse class of chemicals that are used to dissolve or disperse other substances. Some solvents of concerninclude aromatic hydrocarbon solvents (e.g., toluene, xylene, benzene) and halogenated organic solvents (e.g., methylenechloride, perchloroethylene, trichloroethylene).

Some of these solvents can be found in home furnishings products containing in oil-based paints, adhesives, wood finishes andsealants. Breathing solvent vapors may lead to temporary nervous system symptoms, such as headaches, dizziness, and brainfog. Long-term occupational exposure to some solvents may increase cancer risk. Exposure to high levels of the main solventused in paint strippers (methylene chloride) without adequate ventilation can lead to asphyxiation or death.

CERTAIN METALS

Mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and lead are elements that occur naturally in the earth’s crust. Mining and smelting, fossil fuelcombustion, industrial processes, and the use and disposal of products containing them have led to widespread environmentalcontamination and human exposure and health harm.

Exposure to mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and lead in the womb or in early childhood can harm brain development, leading tolearning and behavioral problems. In adults, each metal is associated with increased cancer risk. Mercury and arsenic areassociated with adverse effects on the nervous and cardiovascular systems. Cadmium is associated with lung and kidneydamage as well as weakened bones. Lead can cause high blood pressure, miscarriages, stillbirth, infertility, and decreasedkidney and brain function.
