Northern Colorado Common Read (NCCR) is a community-wide reading initiative designed to bring people of all ages and from various libraries together to read, discuss and celebrate a single book. This unique program is a collaborative effort of library systems all across the Front Range and Northern Colorado.

This year’s book, Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand was selected for its inspiring message of resilience, forgiveness and perseverance. Unbroken pays homage to The Greatest Generation and provides an opportunity to honor and relate to all veterans.

Unbroken has sold millions of copies and has remained on the New York Times bestseller list for more than 93 weeks. This remarkable book tells the true life story of Louis Zamperini - a U.S. Olympic athlete and WWII B-24 bombardier. In 1943, Zamperini’s US Army Air Forces plane was shot down over the Pacific Ocean. He survived 47 days in a life raft only to be picked up by the Japanese navy and taken as a prisoner of war. The Washington Post claimed Unbroken to be “a meticulous, soaring and beautifully written account of an extraordinary life.”

The NCCR runs October 1 – November 12, and will feature a variety of programs, book and film discussions, and other events that celebrate Unbroken and its themes.

Participating libraries include: Aims Community College, Berthoud Community Library District, Boulder Public Library, Clearview Library District, High Plains Library District, Sterling Public Libraries, Wellspring Library (North Colorado Medical Center) & Westminster Public Libraries.

FeAtUReSCitizenship Preparation @ your library

• “HowmanyamendmentsdoestheConstitutionhave?”

• “WhatisonepromiseyoumakewhenyoubecomeaUnitedStatescitizen?”

• “TheFederalistPaperssupportedthepassageoftheU.S.Constitution.Nameoneofthewriters.”

• “WhatisonethingBenjaminFranklinisfamousfor?” *

These are just four of the 100 questions lawful permanent residents must learn when they are preparing to take the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ (USCIS) naturalization exam. In addition to learning about U.S. history and government, citizenship candidates must also prepare for the reading and writing tests (in English) and the oral eligibility interview over their N400 (the ten-page “Application for Naturalization” form). All of these topics and skills are explored and practiced in HPLD’s Fall 2012 citizenship classes that meet Tuesday mornings and Wednesday evenings at the Administration and Support Services building. “Information literacy” or instruction on how to use library resources, such as our online catalog, databases, and interactive websites is another feature of the classes as is building a sense of community and plain ‘ole fun!

Citizenship preparation classes at HPLD began in 2010 with a “The American Dream Starts @ your library” grant funded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and the American Library Association. They continued in 2011-2012 with a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. During the last two years, over ninety students have participated in classes and at last count, twenty have completed their naturalization exams and become citizens (three in July 2012 alone!) Given the positive response and continued demand for these classes, HPLD has decided to sustain the classes as part of our ongoing services.

For more information about the current classes or the program itself, contact Cindy Welsh, Outreach Librarian at 970.506.8645 or [email protected].
