Did you ever wonder just how Jesus supported His ministry as well as 12 men and their families?

Well, this Scripture certainly gives us a glimpse behind the scenes as mostly the women gave of their means (or money) to support Jesus and His disciples! It is interesting to note here that things have not changed much — it is still mostly the women who support TBN! How do we know? I’m glad you asked — the checks are signed with the ladies’ names! Now do not be upset. Gentlemen, I’m sure most of you gave permission and some of us men do give generously to keep TBN ON THE AIR around the world! God bless us all! Right after we learn of where much of Jesus’ support came from, He launches into His parable of the sower and the seed. You should know the story well. Some seed fell on hard ground, some on stony ground and some among thorns; but, some of the seed (God’s Word) fell upon good ground, and Jesus explains what this parable represents: “But the good soil represents honest, good-

hearted people. They listen to God’s words and cling to them and steadily spread them to

healed.’ And instantly the leprosy disappears.” But wait, what does Jesus instruct the former leper to do? “Then Jesus says to him…‘go right over to the priest

to be examined: and take with you the offering required by Moses’ law…a public testimony of your cure.’” Matt. 8:1, 4

WOW! But that was Old Testament — Moses’ law. Watch out! Jesus also said: “I come not to destroy the law…but to fulfi ll [all of it]. Matt. 5:17. Does this mean that Jesus actually ordered the man just healed to GIVE AN OFFERING to the priest, which helped to support the Temple of God? Read it for yourself in Matthew, chapter 8. Ah, dear partners, we know Jesus accepted offerings; we also know He had a house: “Sir…where do you live? ‘Come and see,’ he [Jesus] said. So they went with him to the house where he was staying [living] and were with them from about four o’clock that afternoon until the evening” (John 1:39 TLB). The Scripture goes on to name one of the persons who had asked, “Sir, where do you live?”: “One of these men was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother” (John 1:40 TLB). I cannot say that Jesus held Praise-a-Thons, but it is crystal clear that Jesus not only approved the giving of offerings to ministries, including His own; Jesus also made it clear that if we give with a good motive and right spirit that He would see to it that the giver would be rewarded! How we all love to quote Jesus’ own words: “For if you give, you will get [receive]! Your gift will

return to you…in full and overfl owing measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over.” Luke 6:38.

But here is the KEY to this promise that many overlook: “Whatever measure you use to give—large or

small—will be used to measure what is given back to you”! Luke 6:38B TLB

Oh, how critics and heresy hunters twist and turn over this and other Scriptures, trying in vain to make us believe Jesus was poor and so we should also be poor if we want to be like Him! They use 2 Corinthians, chapter eight to make their case: “You know how full of love and kindness our Lord

Jesus was: though he was so very rich, yet to help you he became so very poor, so that by being poor he could make you rich”! 2 Cor. 8:9 TLB.

So, there you have it — JESUS WAS POOR! But, hold on. Let me ask you a question: Was Jesus poor SPIRITUALLY? “Of course not,” you cry! He contained the “FULNESS OF THE GODHEAD” (Col. 2:9). So, in what way did Jesus become poor? Well, coming from heaven any mansion on earth by comparison would be poor! So, Jesus’ poverty in coming from heaven to earth was only in earthly things. Therefore, His purpose by His earthly poverty was to make us rich both spiritually and materially! Gotcha, heretic hunters! As I was growing up it was always drilled into me that, “IT IS MORE BLESSED TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE!” Youth does not like to hear this line, but as I grew older, and now at 74, I tell you the truth: I love to give so very much more than to receive! I get more joy as I give than I can even

express. I LOVE PRAISE-A-THONS and I love to give to other ministries also. I feel much like King David who said, as he gave his whole estate to God for the building of the great Temple by his son Solomon: “O our God, we thank you and praise your glorious

name, but who am I and who are my people that we should be permitted to give anything to you? Everything we have has come from you, and we only give you what is yours already!” 1 Chron. 29:13, 14

The king concludes his prayer with one last haunting word: “I know, my God, that you test men to see if they are

good; for you enjoy good men.” 1 Chron. 29:17 Ah, dear partners, do you hear my heart as I cry for the lost souls of humanity? We ARE REACHING THEM — praise God — with all Christian satellite TV!
