Though largely known for his drag racing Hemis, the engines that Ed Pink built over the last 60-plus years have won races in a wide variety of motorsports, from midget racing all the way up to Indy car racing. That adaptability and Pink’s longetivity, not to mention his capability, this earned him a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Petersen Automotive Museum, presented at last week’s SEMA show.

Pink, who many call “The Old Master,” began building engines in 1948 under the tutelage of Lou Baney after attending trade school in Los Angeles. It was there that he first became proficient in building Chrysler’s Hemi V-8 for drag racing purposes. “We ran our own dragster, then we got some pretty good guys to drive for us, like Mike Snively, Tom McEwen, and Connie Swingle,” he told Jim Donnelly for a profile on him in Hemmings Muscle Machines #28. Because Hemis at the time were so prevalent, “we’d buy all the 392s we could, tear ‘em apart and have 30 to 40 blocks to sell.”

After leaving drag racing, Pink got involved with midgets and did some engine work for NASCAR and built a 165-cu.in. 350hp four-cylinder engine, which ran on straight alcohol and was installed in a 900-pound car. So prolific were Ed's engines, they've won 10 national midget championships. He then did some Indy car engines for Tom Sneva, Danny Ongais, Al Unser, and Roger Mears.

Today, Ed still shows up at work early and while he doesn't have his hands on everything, he oversees his modern shop, which has 15 desktop computers, a half-dozen laptops and two dynos. "What used to work 20 years ago, doesn't today. You have to keep up with the technology and leave no stone unturned searching for power."

Racing Recipe. By Colin Chapman

40 years ago Emerson Fittipaldi delivered McLaren their first ever Formula One World Championship. This light-hearted yet hard hitting official video looks back at his amazing career.

October 6th 1974 saw Emerson Fittipaldi bring home home McLaren’s first-ever world championship trophy. Forty years later he’s commonly refereed to as the ‘Father of Brazilian Motorsport’. (Courtesy of Motorsports Retro)

" Adding power makes you faster on the straights. Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere. "

" Simplicate, then add lightness. "

" Any car which holds together for more than a race is too heavy. (Tongue-in-cheek, as race cars must test and qualify before the start of any race.) "

McKenzie’s 2 Pence Worth... by President James McKenzie

Several things to talk about this month. The first is a huge thank you to all that have come by the

hospital and house to give us your best wishes and prayers. Also all the cards , phone calls, and texts to let us know you are thinking of us. We couldn't ask for a better bunch of friends. For those that don't know, here is whats going on. On Nov. 17th, Monday morning I went to see the doc. Next thing

you know I am in the hospital and have surgery the next morning. I had a blocked colon, and colon cancer. They

removed a foot of the large intestine and the spleen, then stapled me back together. Got home the next Monday just in time to

celebrate my 60th birthday and have Thanksgiving at home. Another big thanks for a home cooked turkey dinner delivered by Brian and Bobbie Francis for Susan and me, that was awesome. Also my youngest daughter was in the hospital having a baby same time I was in. Susan drove me up to see the new little fellow Friday, big 9 lb, 6 oz guy that is doing great as well as my daughter. Three boys running around the house, she will have her hands full for a long time!Back to the bad news, I will go in to see the doc in a week and get a schedule for what ever happens next, guessing it to be chemo.Enough of that. On to other things. At the end of the year its time to have elections, and time for me to step down for awhile. Susan wants to take a break from being secretary, so there are two spots open for next year. We have plenty of capable people in the club that can do either job.

Next year my goal is to get out to the garage and finish the mini. As a club we need to think about a few things we can do. Boot sale this spring at Brians? A little car show downtown sometime in the spring by Brits? Cars and coffee again led by Alan? We didn't have a fall party in Nov here but maybe a potluck in January? Sounds good to me.

Thanks friends, see you in a few days on Tuesday.James

Club Minutes by Mary Donovan;LABCC Club Minutes 11/4/14Attendance: 17 members

Charles Linn, Vice President , ran the meeting. Our president, James MacKenzie, was absent because he was in another statewide car meeting.

Dave and Debbie were thanked for their Halloween party. This has become an annual event for the club.

Garnett Lake had a reported turn-out of 123. The Lawrence British Car won the prize for “ most members from one club showing up at Garnett Lake.” The prize was $50; it was given to James MacKenzie and some members wondered if that was why he was absent.(??????)

Bill reported on the Grand Prix race. It was 2.8 miles and if someone got out of control with speed limits they would only run into hay bales. The day was so successful that next year it may run for two days.

Brian reported on the “auto jumble” in England on Lord Montagu’s estate. This year was the 46th year of this international sale. Brian also gave us the latest news on his crate, coming sometime to his home if it gets out of Chicago where it is sitting now.

Armacost is the name of a car museum visited by Alan this month. He seemed impressed with the old Studebakers, Rolls Royces, and other cars which cover 44 thousand feet.

This month’s car story was told to a spell bound audience by our one true Brit, Brian. This tale was of a search in google for his car’s history.
