Dear Friends, It was at Sinai that our ancestors heard the heavenly verdict: “On this day you have become a people.” A “mixed multitude” of the dispos-sessed and the enslaved was ele-vated into a consecrated people and given a priceless gift – The Torah. And that made all the difference. As one of my colleagues has taught: “We became a people when we enlisted in the service of God.” The Festival of Shavuot, with its important Yizkor Service, celebrates the “birthday” of the Ten Commandments. Far from being a “curse” from which we need “liberation,” the Commandments are a blessing to which we need deepened appreciation. It commemo-rates the event, which – in extraordinary fashion – burned itself into our soul, molded our character, regulated our behavior and shaped our destiny. From Torah grew the great texts and wisdom of Judaism: Talmud, Midrash, codes, re-sponse literature, and the wondrous teachings of the ages. We, who appeared on the stage of history carrying a Book, earned the proud designation – “The People of the Book.” We have carried that book since, and that Book has carried us. One of the real threats to Jewish survival in our communities of America derives from the growing distance between the People of the Book and the books of our people. More and more of our people know less and less about our rich heritage, accumulated over long centuries of spiritual and intellectual creativity. Ignorance leads to indifference; indifference leads to loss of identity. An empty sack cannot stand. Join us this year as we celebrate Shavuot with Yizkor together with Temple Beth Zion,

Temple Sinai, and Congregation Havurah. This year, we will gather at Temple Beth Zion on Delaware at 10:30 AM for a joint service. Additionally, we will celebrate the Confirmation of Temple Beth Am’s wonderful Confirmands on Friday evening, May 21st, in our

sanctuary at 7:30 PM. Please consider joining us at these services. Please consider renewing and strengthening your connection to our People and our Festi-vals. I’d like to conclude this article (as I have in the past) with the inspiring poem from the hands of Rabbis Harold Kushner and Jack Riemer:

We owe it to our ancestors to keep Torah alive; They struggled and suffered to pre-serve our way of life; They knew this to be their most precious gift to us. We owe it to our children to keep Torah alive; For why should they be spiritual paupers; When the riches of this heritage can be theirs? We owe it to the world to keep Torah alive; This is a message which the world needs to hear. We owe it to God to continue as a people, To share God’s dream, To bear witness to God’s sovereignty, And to live the words of Torah.

From Cantor Sharon Eve Colbert Spring really is beautiful, isn’t it? On March 21st, I was leaving Temple on a Sunday after-noon and saw my first pansy of the season – just a little one – a small purple and yellow face checking out the weather probabilities for the survival of its species. Being a bit of a romantic, in case you haven’t noticed by now, I reflected back on that weekend. Saturday, March 20th was the vernal equinox, the first moment of spring: a time when the periods of light and dark are equal, a time of balance. It was also the weekend that Rabbi Jamie Ar-nold gave our Buffalo community a gift. We had the opportunity to achieve balance in our lives through music and ritual. I realize now that it was not by chance that we gathered to find an equinox in our kahal, in our Jewish community. With this realization, my own faith and sense of balance was strengthened. In the Gregorian month of May, we are passing through the final days of the Hebrew month of Iyar. In Biblical history, we are approaching Mount Sinai, where we will receive the 10 Declarations of God on Shavuot, the 6th of Sivan, or May 19th on the Gregorian calendar. Not only are the Commandments a gift, but a moral and ethical code by which six billion of the earth’s inhabitants can achieve balance. Do they work? Only if we hold them fast to our hearts. as we read selections and offer her our personal responses to her poetry chapbook, "Time of Sand and Teeth," published in 2009. Why is this night different from all other readings Gunilla does in Buffalo? We at TBA, trusted friends and thoughtful readers, take pride in her many artistic and spiritual gifts to Temple and the larger community, particularly in recent years. On this night, May 20th, we at TBA will make our own intimate evening with Gunilla's poetry, giving back by reading her poems to her. As we respond, perhaps we can help build on Gunilla's com-ment that "the poet's place is as ...witness, ...member and ...heir." From Sharon Malek Jacobs, Director of Education Shabbat is a gift for all of us to enjoy. The youngest among us need not be ex-

empt. Friday Morning Family Fun is a new program that has been spearheaded

by Rabbi Alex Lazarus Klein and his wife, Ashirah, of Temple Sinai.

Rabbi Alex called a meeting with Sheree LaMendola, a parent from Temple Beth

Tzedek, Susan Goldberg Pardo, the Educator from Temple Beth Zion, and I repre-

sented our Temple. Together, we agreed to a seasonal rotation of this program at

each of our buildings.

This past winter, the program was piloted at Temple Sinai. Temple Beth Zion will

offer the spring program, which runs each Friday morning through June 4th at the

Broder Building, 700 Sweet Home Road. We, at Temple Beth Am, will host the

summer installment that will begin on July 9th and continue through August 13th.

The autumn dates at Temple Beth Tzedek will be October 29th to December 10th.

Then we continue again in the winter at Temple Sinai.

Each Friday morning will begin at 10:00 AM and finish at 11:15 AM. Activities

for babies, toddlers and their families will include: Jewish stories, songs, crafts,

playtime, snack and a Shabbat celebration. The fee is $36 per family.

The goal of this group was to strengthen programming for young Jewish families

in our community by working cooperatively. Additional programs for young Jew-

ish families may be an outgrowth of this initiative.

On March 11th, Sisterhood held it’s first “Lunch and Learn” in our Tem-ple’s Social Hall. Hosted by Janis Sinatra and attended by a dozen Sister-hood members and one brave gentleman, we learned how to make a vari-ety of delicious, yet simple cookies. While our cookies were baking, we ate our lunch and schmoozed. When the cookies were done, we ate them for dessert, and packaged the rest for everyone to take home. Janis was an excellent instructor, having prepared work stations in the kitchen with the necessary ingredients so that everyone had an opportunity to work “hands on.” Thank you Janis for a job well done. On Sunday, May 9th, Sisterhood will be holding it’s Annual Mother’s Day Chiavetta’s BBQ in the Social Hall. Please join us for take-out or eat-in from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but come early, as this event always sells out. To be certain we don’t sell out before you arrive, if you wish to pre-order and pre-pay for your chicken dinners, please send your check to Evelyn Herman at 52 Fairbanks Ave., Buffalo, NY 14223. The price of a chicken dinner with ½ chicken, two sides and a roll and butter is $9.00. Extra ½ chickens or a child’s dinner (¼ chicken with two sides, roll and butter) is $6.00. We will set aside your pre-ordered dinners, labeled with your name, for pick-up at your convenience. Your order must be received by May 5th. Also, mark your calendars for Sunday, June 6th, for Sisterhood’s Annual Donor’s Luncheon and Basket Auction. More information to come. Sisterhood is also planning two events for July. One is our Annual End-of-Year Party, at which our new Sisterhood Board will be installed. The other is a special event that is still in the planning stages. It’s hard to believe it’s 2010. As we look forward to the fabulous year ahead, we’d like to remind you to mark your calendars for this year’s Walk Off

Hunger for the Food Bank of WNY/Summer Fest 2010. This year’s event takes place on Sunday, August 1st, and represents the largest fundraising

activity and community event organized by Temple Beth Am. This year’s Walk Off Hunger will begin with registration and check in at 10:30 AM Sun-

day August 1st, with the walk beginning at 11:30 AM and Summer Fest kicking off at 12:00 PM!

Many members of our Temple family have supported the walkathon and Summer Fest since its inception two years ago. Support in the form of event

participation, volunteers, and sponsors are what enable us to put together this community event that demonstrates the altruis m of our Jewish community,

while at the same time bringing in much needed funds for Temple Beth Am.

Of course, we can’t say enough about our generous sponsors. Without their monetary support, this event would not have doubled its success over the past

two years. This year, we expect the growth to continue. The entire Buffalo community is looking forward to this year’s Walk Off Hunger and Summer

Fest 2010, which will continue to promote the celebration of community diversity. As host and sponsor of this event, Temple B eth Am raises funds

through ticket sales, food and booth vending, basket raffles and more.

For those who are unfamiliar with Summer Fest, our mission statement is as follows: Summer Fest is a Temple Beth Am sponsored and hosted commu-

nity celebration of diversity. It provides an opportunity for non-profit, non-political cultural groups to raise funds through booth vending, and share

with the community their culture through wares, food, and entertainment. The intent of Summer Fest is to draw in participant s from the entire Buf-

falo community to come together in the celebration of culture and diversity.

Summer Fest begins with a community walkathon (Walk Off Hunger) to raise money for the Food Bank of WNY. The walkathon begins and ends on the

grounds of Temple Beth Am. 100% of the money raised from walker registration and walk donations go directly to the Food Bank of WNY. Over the

past two years, Temple Beth Am and The Food Bank of WNY have raised nearly $75,000 providing more than a quarter of a million meals for the hun-

gry here in Western New York. Walkers can register to walk individually, as a family or as a group i.e. sports team, club, bu siness, or even religious

organization. More information regarding walkathon registration will be available soon.

After the walkathon, Temple Beth Am hosts Summer Fest, a celebration of our community’s diversity. Our community effort to wa lk together to raise

money for the Food Bank of WNY becomes a unifying agent connecting all participants in this fundraising festival. Summer Fest sponsors provide the

funds to cover the expenses of the event, for example, the stage, tents, rides, and other costs associated with making the fe stival spectacular. Last year,

this festival raised approximately $15,000 for Temple Beth Am, nearly double that from our first year.

We are confident this festival will continue to grow exponentially. The public relations and media coverage of Walk Off Hunge r/Summer Fest has put

Temple Beth Am on the map as host of this terrific event.

As we begin the extensive process of planning for this year’s Summer Fest, we hope that you reserve the date on your calendar and plan on participating
