STEP TWO: REGISTER WITH BCS

Registering your child at BCS formally expresses your interest in applying for a place. By completing the registration, the student is placed on the Admissions List. In order to complete the registration process, please return the following to the Registrar:

• Registration Form• Personal Statement (when applying for a place in our Sixth Form) • A copy of the student’s passport• A copy of the student’s two most recent school reports• Details on any educational or behavioural reports or assessments (where applicable)• £100 Registration Fee

It is advised to register your son or daughter with BCS as early as possible. In cases of over-subscription, places shall be allocated on a first come - first served basis, according to the registrations. Please note: BCS will ask your child’s current school for a reference in support of your application.

STEP THREE: TASTER DAYS

Taster Days can be arranged after the registration process has been completed. These allow prospective students to meet teachers and pupils, familiarise themselves with the school surroundings and experience a day as a BCS Student.

The Registrar will arrange the Taster Day around the prospective family’s requirements. Whether you would prefer a couple of lessons, half a day or a full day at BCS, we will be happy to accommodate your request. Taster Days can be booked all year round for a date most suited to the prospective family’s schedule.

Taster Days can work well when there is more than one student attending. Just contact the Registrar, who will be able to advise of any Taster Days already booked into the school diary.

STEP FOUR: MEET THE HEADMASTER

All students joining BCS are invited to have a short meeting with the Headmaster, Mr Russell Slatford. This is a perfect opportunity for the Headmaster to meet the new students of BCS and for the prospective student to ask their future Headmaster any questions they may have. There is nothing to be nervous about!

Parents are very welcome to join the student for their meeting. However, the students are usually a little more talkative when they are by themselves!

Interviews can be arranged at a time suitable to the prospective family’s schedule. We can arrange for the student to miss a section of a lesson for 15 minutes while they are here for a Taster Day or we can add the meeting on to the end of a tour of the school. Please email the Registrar who will be able to arrange this for you.

14

STEP FIVE: ENTRANCE PAPERS

Entrance papers are arranged for the January before September entry and apply to those entering Years 7-10. An entrance paper day shall be arranged by the Registrar, usually on a Saturday, (see key dates on page 11).

BCS are a non-selective school, so there is no ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ when it comes to our entrance papers. We use these papers to baseline the students joining us and we also consider these when awarding our academic scholarships. We are also considering suitability as we want to ensure that BCS is able to fully support your child’s educational requirements.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

BURSARIESBCS offer means-tested Bursary awards. A financial assessment is carried out by the school through Bursary Administration Limited. Please contact the Registrar for an application, [email protected].

Bursaries are available from Years 7 - 13 and should be applied for at point of entry to the school. Emergency Bursaries are available for all year groups and may be considered when the family have had a change in their financial circumstances. A non-refundable charge of £50 is required in order to submit a bursary application.

SCHOLARSHIPS AT BCSBCS makes a limited number of scholarship awards per year. These awards recognise excellence and potential in a range of areas which are of importance to the school. All awards carry clear expectations of involvement and pupils are expected to work to their potential in all subjects. Scholars are expected to work hard, contribute positively to the life of BCS and to set a good example to other pupils.

Throughout our scholarship process, we like to put the emphasis on allowing the candidates an opportunity to demonstrate their talents and strengths. We hope the students find it to be an enjoyable process. The value of each award is determined by the Headmaster and the Governors’ Finance Committee and will not normally exceed 25%. Scholarships are only available at point of entry to the school.

THE ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP

All students are considered for an Academic Scholarship, either through their entrance papers or their GCSE Predicted Grades. School reports and references are also considered.

In Year 7 to Year 11 It is expected that Academic Scholars will have the potential to achieve A* to A grades across the majority of their GCSE subjects. As a guide, they should be in the top 10% of their cohort. All candidates will be expected to sit an English and Mathematics assessment and have an interview with the Headmaster, as part of the admissions procedure. It is from this process alongside review of school reports and reference(s), that the Academic Scholarships will be awarded, therefore there is no need to apply.

In Year 12All students will complete a personal statement, to be accompanied by their recent school reports and references and have an interview with the Headmaster as part of the admissions process. Academic Scholarships shall be awarded through consideration of these elements as well as consideration of predicted GCSE results. Any Academic Scholarship awarded may be subject to the student obtaining sufficiently good GCSE results.

THE SPORTS SCHOLARSHIP

The practical assessment will be the main factor on which Sports awards are based.Candidates will be required to undertake:

• A fitness assessment;• Participate within a group, helping with other sports as well as focussing on their chosen sport;

16

• Potential Scholars will be asked to demonstrate and talk about how they can add to the sporting life of BCS, how they will act as an ambassador for the school and how they can lead towards excellence across a range of sporting disciplines.

It is important to note that we look for all-round ability across all the school Sports when assessing our potential Scholars. It will be expected that all candidates will currently be performing at, or above, County standard or have the potential to do so.

References will be expected to be provided by any clubs which the candidate attends. We will require a portfolio outlining the candidate’s best sports and the level to which they have performed to.

THE PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARSHIP

Candidates will be expected to study Drama up to GCSE, depending on their point of entry into the school. They will be expected to participate fully in performances and productions in the school. BCS has an outstanding reputation for the quality of its productions and Scholars are generally at the heart of these performances.Candidates will be required to:

• Deliver an unseen piece as part of the assessment day. Applicants will be given 10 minutes to read the brief and to prepare their performance. Candidates will be allocated an individual slot where they will perform their unseen piece and will also have the opportunity to perform an optional prepared piece. It is not a requirement to have prepared pieces; this is left to the candidate to decide if they wish to showcase any other performing talents. No music accompaniment will be available but students may bring their own CDs or iPods if they require any electronic prompts should they decide to do a prepared piece requiring music, e.g. if they wish to showcase a dance.

• Participate in a group exercise based on theatre and performing arts skills. The exercises will be given out on the day.

These tasks will test the candidates’ instinctive feel for performing arts and their ability to collaborate in a group situation. Candidates should feel free to show off their talents and ultimately have fun for the scholarship assessment.

THE MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP

BCS’s Music Scholars contribute immeasurably to the life of the school via their leading roles in our performances. Music Scholars are expected to play a full part in their Co-curricular life of the school, and would be expected to study Music up to GCSE or A Level, depending on their point of entry to the school. Candidates can enter for a Music Scholarship on instruments or voice and should ideally be playing two instruments, although students who have reached a high standard on only one instrument may also apply. Mark sheets from recent grade examination should be included in the student’s portfolio. Candidates will be required to:

1. Perform on their first instrument (and on second/third if they have one): a) 2 contrasting pieces b) Scales and arpeggios (appropriate to standard) c) Sight-reading

2. Perform aural tests, including: a) Clapping a rhythm

17

b) Singing a melody back c) Recognising musical features

3. Interview about their music interests, achievements and activities by the Director of Music.Candidates should also make the assessors aware of any other skills they have that might support their application for a Music Scholarship. For example, music technology, sound and lighting or composing. Candidates must feel confident to ‘show off’ all their musical talent during the assessment. We would like to remind you that we are looking for pieces that demonstrate true musicality rather than technical prowess; this can be demonstrated in lower Grade pieces just as well as Grade 8 repertoire. Ultimately, musical potential is as important as attainment when offering a Music Scholarship.

THE VISUAL ARTS SCHOLARSHIP

Candidates are expected to study Art as one of their GCSE or A Level options, depending on their point of entry to the school. The practical element of the Art Scholarship at BCS will take consideration of two main elements:

1. The PortfolioWith regards to content of the portfolio, the primary interest is to see a broad range of artistic approaches and techniques being used. A selection of work can be submitted that can consist of school or home produced outcomes. In addition, if the applicant has participated in any extra-curricular events or workshops, it would be good to see these too. Original work is better, but if this isn’t possible please feel free to submit some good quality photographs of the art work. Each portfolio submitted must be well organised and well presented. Size is not vitally important, but our advice would be that it should be either A2 or A1 to make sure work is exhibited to its full potential.

As a further guideline, we would expect that the portfolio should include a selection of the following:• High quality observational drawing• Work using colour (dry or wet)• Imaginative and creative outcomes• Photos of any 3D work – (if relevant)• Sketchbook pages• Exploratory work• Self-initiated work• Extra-curricular workIt is expected that each candidate would submit up to 20 items of work. Please make sure that

each portfolio is clearly labelled with the candidate’s name and contact details.

2. The Practical TestCandidates will be required to:• Undertake a study of an object and subsequently to place this in an environment of their own creation (this will be

painted or drawn)• Select their own preferred medium from pencil, pastels or paint, which will be provided by the school or they may

bring their own• It is envisaged that the work produced will be two dimensional due to the time constraint• Be interviewed by the Head of Visual Arts
