As most of you are aware, the Teamsters Union along with every other Union in the U.S. is shrinking.

In 2016, Union membership was down to just 10.7% of the workforce. This represents just a little over one-half (1/2) of what it was in 1983, and one-third (1/3) of what it was in 1964.

The state of New York leads in Union density with 23.6% while South Carolina heads up the anti-Union south with just 1.6% of the work force Unionized.

Unions set area pay standards and work place protections. All workers, Union or non-Union, benefit from the presence of Unions. Unionized companies pay an average of 20% more and are almost 30% more likely to provide Healthcare to its em-ployees. Unionized shops enjoy

higher productivity, lower turn-over and have a better trained workforce.

There are many reasons for this drop in Union density. Among these reasons are the loss of Union heavy manufacturing jobs and the weakening of labor laws designed to protect workers from anti-Union efforts of today’s corporations. Canada has much better labor laws and enjoys almost two times the Union density than here in the U.S.

There are now twenty-seven (27) states that have passed Right-to-Work laws which serve to under-mine the Union movement.

Corporations, large and small, have increased their pressure to limit or eliminate Unions in all areas of the workforce. Led by corporate giant Walmart and wealthy/greedy individuals like the Koch Brothers. Unions are under attack as never before.

At this point, you may be saying yes, but what can I do about this? I am only one person.

You are an individual but you are part of a much larger organi-zation. You can get active by voting only for Labor friendly Presidents, Senators, and Rep-resentatives. You can be active at your workplace by helping your Union representatives uphold your hard earned labor contracts. After all you are the Union, and it is only as strong as you are.

And finally, one of the most important things you can do is appreciate and support your Union. Your Union contract affords you many rights and benefits that your non-Union neighbors do not enjoy. Speak up and speak out in support of your Union. Do not be shy about representing your Union in a positive way.

Together we can all make a dif-ference and help bring Unions back to the positive force that they once were. The time is now, before it’s too late and Unions disappear altogether.

Save your Union and save the middle-class.

SAVE YOUR UNION AND SAVE THE MIDDLE CLASS BY WAYNE PERLEBERG, SECRETARY-TREASURER TEAMSTERS JOINT COUNCIL 32

ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES BY LAWRENCE A. YOSWA, PRESIDENT TEAMSTERS JOINT COUNCIL 32

Lawrence A. Yoswa

Elections have conse-quences, and this fall we will have another round of consequential outcomes.

Sometimes we have good outcomes, but lately we’ve had some end not so well.

Your involvement in the election process by casting your voice and strongly considering Teamsters Joint Coun-cil 32 endorsements is important. They say there is power in politics, and in the Labor community it is vital to our existence.

Having our members express their voice at the ballot box is critically important, but it’s not the end of how members should be involved.

The Teamsters Union has been successful in politics for decades by the strength in our DRIVE program. Democrat-Re-publican-Independent-Voter-Educations says it all!

Most members have the ability to contractually contribute via payroll deduction $1 or $2 per week to our DRIVE politi-cal action committee so that we may impact politics by supporting candidates running for office that are like minded when it comes to workers’ rights.

In the coming months we will have DRIVE Representatives from Washington, D.C., visiting worksites throughout our Joint Council. If you’re already signed up, I personally thank you

for your participation. If you are not, please take the time to listen to their pitch and sign up to pro-tect the future of our jobs and our organization!

I’m very proud that my Local, Teamsters Local 792, leads Teamsters Joint Council 32 on the percentage of members signed up for our DRIVE program.

Consider this a challenge to the members of all Lo-cal Unions to surpass our success!

Call your Local Union, contact your Business Representative or Shop Steward for more infor-mation.

Sign up for DRIVE today!

FALL ELECTIONSBY EDWARD REYNOSO, JC 32 POLITICAL DIRECTOR AND SPECIAL PROJECTS ORGANIZER

This fall there will be elections throughout the state that are still very important for Labor.

It’s extremely important that you take the time to find out what seats are up for election in your community, city and county.

Teamsters Joint Council 32 DRIVE has conducted many screenings for some of the elections that will take place this fall.

If you’d like to see an updated list of our endorse-ments please go to teamstersjc32.org.

As I’ve mentioned in my past articles, we have a thorough screening process that asks many tough questions pertaining to our jobs and the ability for our members to earn good Union wages and benefits. Regardless of political affiliation we endorse based on the candidates answers to these questions.

I’d like to take this opportunity to point out two specific mayoral elections that will take place on November 7, 2017 in the cities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.

Saint PaulWe have officially endorsed current Metropolitan Airports Commissioner and former Saint Paul council member Pat Harris. We also screened all of the candidates running for mayor and concluded that the best candidate for the future of Saint Paul is Pat Harris.

His experience as a former Council member and his deep resume supporting Labor is second to none. He has a strong career advocating for work-ers and will serve the city very well as Mayor.

We hope you consider voting for our long-time Teamster friend Pat Harris for Mayor of Saint Paul on November 7.

MinneapolisWe have officially endorsed current City Council member Jacob Frey for Mayor of Minneapolis. We have screened all of the candidates that requested our endorsement and after reviewing the questionnaires and asking them for their com-mitment to workers in Minneapolis, Jacob Frey far surpassed the other candidates on his vision for workers in the city. His interview session was incredibly supportive regarding Unions and work-ers’ rights. In fact his quote of “I’m not looking to create a relationship with the Teamsters Union as the Mayor of our largest city in Minnesota, we already have that; I want to forge a partnership with you. I want your organization at the table when decisions are discussed that impact workers in Minneapolis.”

You can’t ask for a better commitment for Labor by his comments. For this reason and many others we proudly endorse Jacob Frey for Mayor of Min-neapolis and hope that you consider joining us in voting for him on November 7!

In Iowa an estimated 40,000 Union work-ers in the public sector will be casting ballots in the next three (3) months to re-certify their Unions and their Union’s right to negotiate on their behalf. This is part of Iowa’s massive gutting of collective bargaining laws that passed in February, 2017.

The certification process is coming under high scrutiny by Unions. A legislative panel voted to advance a framework governing the election processes without addressing the concerns raised by Union leaders.

Some of these concerns ensure that em-ployees can vote while they’re at work and that steps are taken so workers have access to on-line computers enabling workers who want to vote to do so.

It’s a simple fundamental process that should be everyone’s goal. But the inten-tions of the Legislative Panel and Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) appear to be creating as much confusion to this process as possible in hopes to weaken Union power.

The power rests with these Union mem-bers and workers to vote. Regardless if these workers are democrats, republicans or independent voters, this vote is about your paychecks and benefits.

This vote is about you and your family keeping the standard of living you know.

I encourage all of my members to talk with your fellow workers and Vote YES - to maintain your Pursuit of Happiness that comes with your UNION CONTRACT.

Meet Cindy Whelan, Family Services Specialist at the Minnesota Teamsters Service Bureau. For 10 years, Cindy has been the go-to person and connection for Teamster members and our agency. Cindy is a great listener who provides answers to the issues that Teamsters call about. Her experience, skills and connections built over her 33 year career in human services help her work with Teamsters and their families while giving them confidence in her assistance.

What issues does Cindy hear about from members?

Chemical dependency, mental health, financial and legal issues, or family stress are some of the most frequent areas of concerns brought to Family Services. I asked Cindy for an example of a typical client. She provided the following statistics: 74% are new users; 78% are Teamster employees (vs. family member); 73% are male; 55% aged 41+ years old; 44% identify as Caucasian; since January 1st, 16 members have completed a chemical dependency assessment through the Service Bureau. Members are referred to Cindy from a variety of sources. Twenty-two percent are referred by their Business Agent or Steward, another 22% are referred from other sources such as a co-worker or family member, 11% by their Supervisory or Human Resources and 11% by a brochure/poster or newsletter.

Cindy is also backed up by a 1-800 answering service available 24-7 that can act as an entry point to connect with local counseling services in towns throughout Minnesota and North Dakota. Fifty-two percent of calls to Family Services are for EAP counseling services.

Local Union News

LOCAL 320Teamsters Local 320 is ramping up for some major changes coming up in the next year or so regarding legal attacks on public sector Unions and the imminent employer offensive that will follow. We are at a pivotal time for Labor Unions. What we do in the next several months will have a significant influence on how we operate and maintain effectiveness with an increasingly hostile environment. Our Local Union has constructed a strate-gic plan to stay strong in uncertain times.

Our strategic objectives are designed to meet the challenges we shall face. It asserts how we need to organize in the workplace, starting with communication and a greater emphasis on education and career development for our members.

We must revitalize our MNTLEL program for law enforcement and corrections members; and develop a political program that identifies the issues members care about and focus on the needs of public employees.

Our strategic plan is a solid road map through the gathering storm. This is going to take a lot of work to implement these objectives to reach our goals.

We invite all Teamster Local 320 members to join together as we weather the storm. In the coming months we will provide further information on how we will imple-ment the plan and what you can do to help.

Brian Aldes Secretary-Treasurer Teamsters Local 320

Lakeville Motor Express We continue our picket daily at LME/FLE and will not stop until this company does what is right for our members. LME/FLE is currently under investigation by the State of Minnesota, a Bankruptcy Court and the National Labor Relations Board. These things take time but we will continue to pursue every avenue to get justice for our members.

Contracts Local 120 continues to raise the bar. We have recently ratified great contracts with Sysco Foodservice, Ecowater and Super-moms Bakery Drivers.

“Local 120 members continue to push back against corporate greed, and as a result, our business agents and negotiating commit-tees continue to deliver industry-leading contracts,” stated President Tom Erickson.

Riverboat DaysTeamsters Local 120 is again participating in the riverboat days parade this year. Most of our members from Wilson Trailer Company located in Yankton South Dakota joined us this year in marching in the parade.

This is one of the largest parades in South Dakota. If you would like to see a great parade, join us in Yankton. You won’t be disappointed!

It is a great way to introduce us to the

community and educate them about our strong Teamsters Union.

Contract NegotiationsLocal 471 has been busy this year with two significant contract negotiations: Dean Foods in Woodbury, MN and Old Dutch Foods in Roseville, MN.

Dean Foods was recently ratified by a large margin. This three (3) year contract will see hourly rate increases annually, pension increases and the availability of a 401(k) all while maintaining strong language protecting workers and health and welfare for active members as well as retirees.

Old Dutch Foods was also recently rati-fied. This five (5) year contract secures a substantial upgrade in health and welfare with larger contributions to the member’s Health Reimbursement Account and

reduced weekly employee contributions and lower out-of-pocket expenses for all Union members. Route sales drivers will begin to receive holiday pay and the transport drivers will receive paid personal days. All drivers should see an increase in their wage packages.

Withdrawal Card Request It is your responsibility to request a withdrawal card if you are being laid off; going out on a leave of absence; taking a medical leave; or when you terminate employment.

Basically, if you are going to be off work and you notify us as soon as possible but no later than 90 days you will not owe Union dues for the period of time you are off work.

If you do not notify us, your obligation to pay your dues continues and after 90 days of non-payment your membership will be suspended.

When you return to work, you will be required to pay a re-initiation fee and/or all back Union dues. Unfortunately, there is no exception to this rule. It is also your responsibility to notify us when you return to work after any of the reasons.

You can obtain a withdrawal card by either requesting a postcard from your Union Steward, payroll department, online at www.local471.com or calling Teamsters Local 471 at 612-331-1931 or 1-800-528-4779.

It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over. The Minnesota State Fair, Vikings football and yellow school buses are just around the corner. Whew!

UPS Negotiations We at Local 638 have been busy this summer with contract negotiations in both Minnesota and North Dakota.

We are also gearing up for the largest private sector contract negotiations in the US - the UPS contract which expires on July 31, 2018.

In July, we traveled throughout North Dakota and Minnesota visiting members and conducting proposal meetings. We kicked off our proposal meetings in St. Cloud on July 20, 2017 and had our last proposal meeting in Minneapolis on Sunday, August 6, 2017. Contract proposals will be forwarded to the IBT Package Division by August 25, 2017.

IBT Package Division Director, Sean O’Brien, has scheduled a UPS Screening Committee meeting on September 12, 2017. We hope to begin contract negotiations sometime in October.

Remember, those of us here at the Local 638 office are here to serve you, our members. Please don’t hesitate to contact us whenever we can be of help.

Have a great rest of the summer!

Trevor LawrenceSecretary-Treasurer Teamsters Local 638

UPS NEGOTIATIONS

I hope everyone has had a great summer! Overtime Most of our companies are doing a lot of business this season and this has meant more security for our members. But it also has increased overtime and has created less time for family and recreation.

This increase in overtime has caused some problems in a handful of our shops and many of you have experienced this firsthand.

We’re working with many of our companies to steer the overtime hours to those who want the overtime while offering relief to those who do not. But every contract is different.

I know that working overtime hours on our shop floors can take a lot out of you day in and day out, especially with these hot summer temperatures. So hang in there while we work to keep your overtime hours manageable.

Health Care We have been focusing on keeping your health insurance affordable either through negotiations or through changes to the Local 970 Health and Welfare Plan.

It is still a well-funded plan that gives you and your family peace of mind knowing that you’re covered. There are now around 500 members in this plan and it continues to grow.

Although there was a time when the plan took heavy usage and premiums rose to reflect that, Local 970 has worked hard to keep premiums affordable, and we hope that more companies choose to make the switch to our plan.

Local 970 continues to grow and work in your best interests. President Mike Kuta and I never forget who we work for.
