FOREWORD

The purpose of this standard is to establish procedures within theDepartment of Defense for Standardization of identification for designa-tion control of optical range instrumentation and associated equipmentas defined herein,

History. The Optical Range Instrumentation ( OR1) type designationsystem was prepared and adopted by the Optical Systems Working Groupof Inter-Range Instrumentation Group of the Range Commanders Coun-uil on 1 August 0963. The Range Commanders Council consists of thefollowing ranges — Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC), Air ProvingGround Center (APGC), Atlantic Missile Range (AMR), Naval OrdnanceTest Station (NOTS), Pacific Missile Range (PMR), and White SandsMissile Range (WSMR). In addition to these ranges, the OSWG has as-sociate representation from U.S. Army Electronic Proving Ground, FortHuachuca, Air Photographic and Charting Service (APCS), Langley Re-search Center and Marshall Space Flight Center, Space Systems Division,AFSC and AEC (Sandia Corporation).

Organization. The ORI system is operated in accordance with basicpolicies of the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Installa-tions and Logistics, and the policies established herein, and is approvedand administered by the issuing authority ss a joint standardization pro-cedure.

1. GENERAL

1.1 SCOPE: The Joint Optical Range In-strumentation Type Designation System andprocedures are established for use in the as-signment of an ORI type nomenclature to alloptical range instrumentation material asdefined herein (sec. 1.1.1 and 3.1). The mili-tary departments may use this system for al-lied classes of material where such usage isin accordance with standard Department ofDefense procedures. ORI type designationsmust be assigned to at least the fol]owingequipment types:

1.1.1 Equipnumt types. Optical data acqui-sition and/or reduction equipment includingboth photographer and nonphotographic re-cording types, such as:

1.1.1.11 Equipment auxiliary and accesso~to the preceding kinds of items such as as-trodomes, special trailers and/or shelters,handling equipment, focusing and exposurecontrol devices, etc.

1.2 OBJECTIVES. The .Joint OpticalRange Instrumentation Type DesignationSystem, hereinafter referred to as, the ORISyslem, shall fulfill the following objectives:

1.2.1 Serve as a tool for simplification ofidentification of ORT material as defined inparngraph 3 below.

1.2.2 Be sufficiently descri pti,ve to identifysimi]al. m:~teria] nnd at the same time aid inthe clistinguishing of significant differencesfrom :1 user’s point of vie~~. by use of indi-cators fol. (Iesigned usage nnd purpose.

1.2.3 Be definitive as to classes of rna-terinl for which applicable.

1.2.4 lle flexible and sufilciently- broad inscope to’ cover present t~-pes of equipment,and the new types nnd uses of equipmentthat will be deve]opd in the future.

1.2.5 Avoid conflict single-service typedesignations now assigned to Air Force,Arm}-, and Navy equipment.

1.3 GENIIKAL A1’PLICATION.

1.3.1 ORI type clesignations shall be as-signed to:

1.3.1.1 Complete itexns, sections, units, as-se~blies, subassemblies, and parts of mili-ta;y desi~n either definitive or variable illconfiguration.

mercial or military design, which aregrouped for a military purpose.

1.3.1.3 Major articles of military desifmwhich are not part of, or used with, anitem.

1.3.1.4 Commercial articles, to facilitatemilitary identification or procedures.

1.3.2 ORI type designations will not be as-Eigned to:

1.3.2.1 Articles cataloged commercial Iy,except in accordance with subparagraph1.3.1.4.

1.3.2.2 Parts such as shutter, lense ele-ments, drive motors, flash tubes. film casset-tw~ except if requirecl to facilitate militaryidentification or procedures

1.4 COORIIINATION.

1.5 WORD NAMES AND SEQUENCE.

1.5.1 Names used in nomenclature assign-ments will be consistent with the policiesformat, and word sequences of tl]c FederalCataloging Program.

1.5.1.1 Nomenclature assignments usingword sequence in the manner prescribed inparagraph 1.5.1 may be applied retroactivelyto equipments or units.

1.6 SECURITY CLASSIFICATION.

1.6.1 All ORI nomenclature assignmentsshall be unclassified in order to provide a

1.6.3 The security classification of theitem described shall be indicated on the no-menclature request and the resulting nomen-clature card.

Suchnotification will identify the DD Form 61to be reclassi t’ied by the appropriate sourcerequest numbers and the subwq[lent nomen-clature cards. The appropriate shipmentnumbers for the cards shall be included ifknown.

1.7 CANCELLATIONS.

1.7.1 ORI type designation may be can-celled upon request by the originating servicewhen:

1.7.1.1 There has been no procu:.ement ofthe item.

1.7.1.2 No experimental models are infield use.

1.7.1.3 No further use of the type ciesig-nation is required for development purposes.

1.7.2 ‘~ancelled OR] type designations willnot be reactivated except upon request or ap-proval of the department that had originallycancellcd the type designation.

1.8 DESCRIPTIONS. .

1.8.1 Each type designation assignmentshall Ibe justified on the basis of a &.wcrip-tion that contains sufficient optical, electrical,mechanical, and reference data to distinguishthe article described from all other artic!cs.The selection of the type designation ele-ments shall be determined b-y the technicz]characteristics of the article and not neces-sarily by its chosen name.

1.8.2 The same type designation assign-ment shall not be used to identify itemswhich differ in operational, optical, e]ectricd,or mechanical characteristics.

1.8.3 When the description of the article

is no longer technically correct it is the

obligation of the requesting service, or

a~ency, to revise the clescript!on of such ax--title.

3. DEFINITIONS

3.1 Definitions. For the purpose of thisstandard, the following definitions apply:

3.1.1 Nomenckukre. Nomenclature in theJoint Optical Range Instrumentation TypeDesignation System is defined as the combi-nation of an authorized item name and atype designation. These are defined as fol-Iows :

3.1.1.1 ,Type desi.qnution. A type designa-tion is a combination of letters and numeralsarranged in a specific sequence to providea short significant method of identification.

3.1.1.2 Item name. The article name is aname published in the Federal CatalogingHandbook H6-1, or that name developed andsubsequently approved by the catalogingDirectorate of Defense Logistics ServiceCenter, or that name selected by the request-ing department as being consistent withFederal cataloging policies.

3.1.2 Optical Range Instwmentatimt. This

technology is defined as the use of opticaltechniques to gather direct or reflected ra-diant energy (Nsnally in the form of dis-crete images) from the near ultra violet(through the visible spectrum) to the nearinfrared and record ing these data with timecorrelation by photographic or electronicmeans through the use of which either im-mediate or deferred analyses can be per-formed.

3.1.3 0 v t i c a 1 Range Iwtrwn.entationEquipment. This equipment from a militarypoint of view generally includes those opticaldevices employed to determine trajectoryand performance details such as attitude,velocity, acceleration, position, altitude, miss-distance, etc.. engineering sequence and highspeed photography underwater, land, seaand space. In every c,ase Optical Range In-@rumentation equipment is understood toinclude peculiar non-optical devices requiredto completi their individual operationalfunctions such as power supplies, trackingdevices, etc., but to exclude associated non-

3.1.4 Modds. The following list of typesof models is descriptive of the stages whichmay be involved in the overall process of re-search, development, and production. Allof the listed types are not necessarily prod-uced.

3.1.4.1 Breadboard model (see M 1L-STL)–243) .

3.1.5 Item.

3.1.5.1 An item is a grouping of completeequipment composed of one or more sections,and in most cases being an entity in itself,capable of performing an operatiomd func-tion, but excluding operating accessories.As an example, a cinetheodolite is an itemconsisting of several sections, viz., a supportsection, an objective, a camera mechanism.a trackers telescope, etc., but does not includethe power or timing systems involved in itsoperation or the shelter which may house it.

3.1.6 Section.

3.1.6.1 A section is an article which con-tributes b the functional makeup of an item.but which, in this connection, is not thoughtof as a complete equipment in itself. It. maybe composed of several units such as a drive

unit, a data readout unit or a control unikAn example of a section is a camera me-chanism which although it might be thoughtof as an itern in itself if it had a housing,in this connotation not an item because it

a functional part of the item to which itattached.

3.1.7 Unit.

3.1.7.1 A unit is a component part of

asection incapable in itself of performing thefunction of a section but essential to theoperation of the section, as in the case ofthe shutter unit which exposes the film butat the same time contributes part of the ac-tion essential to the film advance unit, thecombination of which actions completes theoperation of the camera mechanism whichis the section involved.

3.1. S .Assembly.

3.1.8.1 An assembly is a group of sub-as-sernhlies optically, electrically or mechanic-ally eonnected to perform a specific minorIunction ; as an example the shutter releaseaswnlb]y which in itself is composed ofscyern] sub-nssemb]ies.

3.1.9 Swb-08.ye?nbl~.

3.1.9.1 A sub-assembly is a commonlymo[lnted grouping of two or more differenceparts which are physically or electricallyromhi ned to perform a sp~ific function with-in an assembly, as an ex.arnple the shutterso]enoid is a suh.assemb]y and is part of~he shutter release assembly.

3.1.10 Pm-t.

3.1.10.1 A part is any piece not normallysLIbjert to further disassembly. As an ex-:imp]e the solenoid w%urn spring and theso]enoid’~oi} are parts of the solenoid shuttersub-assembly.

3.1.11 To illustrate the above completely,the solenoid coil (Pnrt) contributes to the

operation of the shutter solenoid (Sub-as-.- aembly) which initiatee the action of the

shubter release (Assembly) which in turnaotivates the shutter (Unit). The shutterunit is a major component of the cameramechanism (Section ) which in turn, togetherwith one or more other sections makes up acinetheodolite (Item).

3.1.12 Interchangeabdity, One-way inter-changeability or articles, as used in the JointORI Designation System, denotes the capabil-ity of a new article to replace an existingarticle. The new article must be equal orsuperior to the existing article. and havethe same dimensions, weight., performance,and dynamic characteristics within allow-able tolerances. The new interchangeable ar-ticle shall be capable of being installed andoperated in lieu of the existing article with-out additional tools, modification to the exist-ing associated article or mounting facilities,or special instructions. Two-way inter-changeability denotes the mutual capabilityof the new article and the old article to beused indiscriminately in each other’s place.

3.1.12.1 By optical interchangeability ismeant the new article’s capability of oper-ation equal to the old article without re-quiring any modifications to the existing sup-port facilities.

3.1.12.2 By mechanical interchangeabilityis meant the new article’s capability of beingphysically installed and operated in the posi-tion previously occupied by the old articlewithout requiring any modifications as tomounting holes, cabling, isolators, eti.Switches, meters, indicators, connectors, etc.,shall be located As on the previous model,within allowable tolerances. The center ofgravity of the new article shall be the sameas in the old anticle, within allowable toler-ances.

3.1.12.3 By functional interchangeabilityis meant the new article’s capability of per-forming, without additional assistance, allthe operational capabilities covered by theprevious article.

.3.1.12.4 By maintenance (repir) partsinterchangeability is meant the abili~ of amaintenance part on one article of’ beinginstalied and operated in lieu of a like ar-ticle in existing equipment without the useof additional tools or modifioabions to theexisting article or mounting facilities andwith no appreciable effect on performance orratings either optical, electrical or mechan-ical.

3.1.13 “part of”. An article which is r~quired to enable an equipment to fulfill itsassigned function is pati of that equipmeniAn article which is physically attached toand essential to the operation of motherarticle is considered part of the wticle towhich it is attached. In either went, theitem must be issued automatically and in allinstances with the equipment or article ofwhich it is a part.

3.1.14 ‘rlJ8ed with but not part of”.

3.1.14.1 An article which extends the useof an equipment beyond its assigned func-tions ancl is issued for use that equipmentonly under special circumstances is con-sidered as used with but not part of thatequipment.

3.1.14.2 An artic]e which may be essentialto the operation of another article but isnot an integral part thereof and not per-manently attached thereto is considered asused with but not pant of the second articleand is pati of the equipment in “which botharticles are used.

3.1.15 Suffix tetter. A suffix letter is a le&ter assigned in alphabetical sequence sta+ing with the letter A to show a modificationwhere functional interchangeability has beenmaintained to the extent defined in 3.1.12.3.(Example: A Kth 58E might be an ORI/CCD~-1. A Kth 58E with reinforced camerahousing would be an ORT/CCD-lA, and aKth 58E with a camera housing designed fm-300 cm lens and requiring an adapter forshorter focal length lenses would be an ORI/

3.1.16 Preparing activit~. The U.S. NavyBureau of Naval Weapons is designated asthe official preparing activity of this stand-ard. The Optical Systems Working Group of

the ;Inter-lknge Instrumentation Group, anadjunct of the Department of Defense, is --recognized for their preparation of technicaldetails of the standard.

3.1.17 The administrator as used herein is

4.4.1 The designation for an accessory orsection shall consist of two indicator letterswhich tell the type of equipment (see ChartII), a number, a slant bar, and designationof the equipment for which it is a part orwith which it is used. For example. thetracker’s scope of an OIU/CBC-4 would beidentified as follows:

5. DETAIL REQUIREMENTS

5.1 Requests Ior nomenclature assign-ments will be submitted on form furnishedand mailed to the Secretmiat 01 IRIG atWhite Sands Missile Range, New Mexico( WSMR).

5.1.1 This activity is responsible for theamignment of type designation numberswithin this system. Where possible, the des-cription required by the DD Form 61, \villbe as prescribed b y the Federal Item l(ienti-fication Guides for Supply Cataloging. Suchdescriptions will be used as the nomencki-‘lmre descriptions, which fire distributed tomilitary agencies having need thereof.

5.2 ALI departments will use the ofiicia]nomenclature strictly as assigned with rc-speot to bath marries and type designations.Assignments may be changed upon the re-quest of the initiating activity provided that

such a change is not contrary to establishedpolicy. Where necessary, names may beomitted from identiikubion markings onequ ipment.s at the discretion of the m-responsibledepartment.

5.3 Replacement of current nomenclaturemay be made upon application to IRIG by theresponsible agency or at the request of theusing agency.

5.4 Parenthesis. The use of parentheticalinformation after the type designation willbe avoided.

5.5 Numbering. The skipping of numbersin ‘#signment.s will be avoided; consecutivenumbering is required. Reservation of blocksof numbers will not normally be permitted.

5.6 Special Suffixes. The use of special suf-

5.7 Coordination.
