    Forimmediaterelease

    In the occasion of the KhmerThai New Year (Chol Chhnam

    Khmer/Songkran),we,over60CambodianandThaicivilsocietyactors

    metinSiemReap,Cambodia,inordertoexplorewaysinwhichthecivil

    societies of both countries can work together to promote mutual

    understanding and working for sustainable peace between Cambodia

    andThailand.

    1. We want to encourage the Cambodian and Thai government toprioritize solving the tensions on the Thai and Cambodian border

    peacefully.Weshare theconcernabout the impactof the tensions

    onthelivelihoodsandwelfareofthepeoplelivingintheborderarea.

    2. We encourage theCambodian and Thai governments to engage indiscussions about the development of common history on the

    relationshipsandsustainablepeacebetweenbothcountries.

    3.We

    call

    on

    the

    media

    to

    take

    an

    active

    role

    in

    promoting

    peace

    by

    reporting on Thai Cambodian relations, using a peace journalism

    perspective.

    4. Weagreetoworkcollectivelytobuildupmutualunderstandingandtrustbetweenthecivilsocietiesofthetwocountries,withfocuson

    crossborder people exchange programs. We call on both

    governments to cooperatewith civil society in the collectivepeace

    buildingprograms.

    5. Webelievethatcivilsocietiesandyouthplayanimportantroleinourcollectivepeacebuildingefforts,andthattheyshouldbesupported

    bybothgovernmentsintheirefforts.

    6. We believe that education should promote values of nondiscrimination and tolerance to different human beings, peoples,

    culturesandlocalwisdoms,inordertotakeawayprejudicebetween

    thepeopleofbothcountries.

    7. We strongly support thenotion thatwe are allhumanbeings.Weshould not look at our differences but our commonalities as a

    startingpointforpeacebuildingandmutualunderstanding.
