The original analogue tapes, recorded in, and rescued from, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, were lost until recently, and with one exception* these tracks have never been previously released on CD. After a 4–hour baking in an oven at 58˚C/136°F, to remove the accumulated moisture that had been attracted to the oxide binder, I was able to transfer the tapes to the digital domain in pristine condition while they were, liter- ally, still hot. This was a venture–adventure for me…flying out to Rio for 10 days in 1981, taking only a few cym- bals and a snare drum, to meet some of Brazil’s finest musicians for the first time and play their music. Toward the end of recording, at an evening ‘breakfast’ in a beach–side cafe, the album’s executive producer, Eckart Rahn (whose idea the project had been), asked me for a title. After a few moments’ thought, it came to me. Since we had recorded mainly at night, while sleeping through the heat of the day, it had to be…A Night in the Sun! With my part in the recording finished, I returned to the UK, leaving Marcio Montarroyos, whose brilliant trumpet–playing had led the ensemble, to complete the project. The resulting album was one of the first Brazilian forays into Jazz–Rock, and listening to it again after these many years, I am amazed by his truly wonderful, spacious, ‘Brazilian Mix’. I can no longer remember much detail about the re- cording and now actually find it difficult to believe that it’s me in there somewhere – so I am very thank- ful that the music can speak for itself again – at long last.” Jon Hiseman Sutton, Surrey September 2012 * SUNROOF had been included in the Marcio Montarroyos release SAMBA SOLSTICE (Black Sun 15001-2) 0 4 13711 50422 Black Sun 15042-2 Jon Hiseman A NIGHT IN THE SUN Produced by Marcio Montarroyos Executive producer: Eckart Rahn Recorded January–May 1981at Sigla Studios, Rio de Janeiro Re-mastered 2012 by Martyn Webster & Jon Hiseman Acoustic Guitar – Sergio Dias Bass – Jamil Joanes Drums – Jon Hiseman Trumpet, Flügelhorn, Piano – Marcio Montarroyos Electric Guitar – Ricardo Silveira, Robson Jorge, Victor Biglione Keyboards – Lincoln Olivetti Percussion – Ariovaldo, Cidinho Piano – Marcos Resende Saxophone – Leo Gandelman Trombone – Sergio de Souza A NIGHT IN THE SUN JON HISEMAN RECORDED IN RIO DE JANEIRO FEAT.
