JONATHAN PG5 MIRACLES PG6 NATIVE VILLAGE CULTURAL EXPERIENCE PG7 My heart was pounding and my knees were shaking. I heard the door slam behind me and I stared at the tiny people below me. I am terrified of heights! I heard a robotic voice say, “Three….two….one.” The floor dropped open. I couldn’t breathe. My life flashed before my eyes. I thought, “Why did I ever agree to do this?” as I plummeted. Well, the answer is simple—I was dared. On our way to the Forever Faithful Camporee, my club decided to visit Noah’s Ark Water Park. The scariest ride at the park is the Scorpion Tail. It is 400 feet tall, 10 stories high, and it drops you at over 50 feet per second. Was I going to try it? Absolutely not—that is, until one of my friends dared me. We already had a bit of a competitive relationship from PBE, so when he said, “I dare you,” I said, “I’m doing it!” It was peer pressure, plain and simple. And it reminds me of the story of David and Jonathan. The two were best friends, even though Saul was jealous of David’s popularity and had already tried to murder David. One day, Saul “spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David…” (1 Samuel 19:1) Saul had asked Jonathan to kill David (that was bad enough) but he had done it right in front of his whole court—Jonathan’s friends, fellow warriors and comrades— his peers! Talk about peer pressure! It would have been so easy for Jonathan to succumb to the combined pressures of his father and friends and agree to kill David. Instead, he warned his friend of the danger. I am so glad that Jonathan chose to follow God and not peer pressure (unlike me with the Scorpion Tail)! Let’s pray today that God will give us the courage to do the right thing and stand up for others, even when we are facing peer pressure! Safety and Main Stage Seating Tips1. Have at least one adult at your campsite at all times.

2. Adults should accompany Pathfinders at all times.

3. When saving seats at the Nighttime Program arena, remember the rule of: seat one and save one. Only one person can save one seat for one other person. Do not leave your seating unattended. All unattended items left will be taken to Lost and Found or thrown away. Portable chairs are strongly recommended. People on tarps cannot see as well and take up a lot of space.

An investiture will take place Sab-bath, August 17, at the main stage. Each candidate needs to bring their investiture supplies to the Sabbath morning service, which begins at 9:30 a.m. and will end around 10:45 a.m. Each investee is responsible to provide their scarf, slide, pins, etc. The investiture service will begin at approximately 9:55 a.m. and end around 10:05 a.m. The investing/pinning will take place after Andreas Peralta presents an investiture challenge to the Pathfinders. All Master Guide candidates will be invested at the same time in the arena area with their clubs. Please be sure you have arranged for a current Master Guide to pin you.

AdventSource has put together an investiture packet that will contain a personalized investiture certificate signed by GC, NAD and Camporee leadership as well as a souvenir pin. It will be provided free of charge to all who registered online prior to June 16. It will cost $10 for all those who registered after this date. The cutoff date in order to receive this packet was July 18, 2019. Everyone who registered prior to July 18 needs to go to the AdventSource booth in Hangar A with a photo ID to pick up his or her packet. After this date, candi-dates can still apply to be invested and will be invested like anyone else, but a certificate or souvenir pin will not be guaranteed.

Buddy Griffith is starring as Jonathan in this year’s Chosen International Camporee. He is a student at Oakwood University and is pursuing a business degree. In 2014, Buddy attended the Forever Faithful camporee. “It was one of the best weeks of my life because of the worship experience with the other countries,” he says. “My favorite part of Camporee was definitely the nighttime play of Daniel. I thought about how prestigious it would be to be a part of the amazing cast of Daniel, because it was such a well put together production.” Buddy’s experience at Forever Faithful inspired him to start learning more about theater arts and acting. He even joined his high school’s theater company and started working with the Dallas Theater Center. One day Buddy heard his grandfather preach a sermon on Daniel and it made him wonder if there were auditions being held for the next Camporee. He went home, submitted his audition and the rest is

history. “It really was a God thing,” he says. “I was looking for something that would take me to the next step in my acting career and He blessed me with the best answer: Oshkosh.” As soon as he heard that he had gotten the part, Buddy started researching his character and keeping a journal of his findings. He read the Bible, “Patri-archs and Prophets” and history books about Israel during David’s time. Buddy even started taking archery lessons, writing first-person diary entries for each event in Jonathan’s life and made a complete timeline of Jonathan’s life. When asked how he hopes others will be impacted by the play Buddy says, “I hope every Pathfinder, parent and everyone watching online and on TV un-derstand that God is ALWAYS there. He’s there in the good times, and especially in the bad times.” He also explains how neat it was that David and Jonathan each had moments where they strengthened each other’s faith. After he finishes his degree, Buddy plans to pursue a career in professional acting. “I would like to move more toward films in the future because I love how movies make people feel. I definitely want to be in the entertainment industry, and with God’s help I know that I can and will go far,” he explains. During his free time, Buddy enjoys watching Mas-terclass videos, videos from professionals teaching their respective crafts. His favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not harm you. Plans to give you a hope, and a future.”

need for pilots and planes for Young Eagles flights at Camporee. “I’d always wanted to go to EAA AirVen-ture, which is also held in Oshkosh two weeks before the Camporee, so I decided to go to both events.” In order to get there, David and a friend flew his plane from Santa Barbara, California, to Oshkosh. After AirVenture, David flew his plane to the Andrews Airpark where he hangared it for two weeks so he could fly back commercially to California so he wasn’t missing too much work. This is David’s first time flying Young Eagles and he is excited to be giving rides throughout the week. “I’m most looking forward to having the opportunity to inspire a Pathfinder to pursue a lifelong passion for flying. I get to do that on the same runways and skies where I experienced my first flight 20 years ago (almost to the day). Even if that doesn’t happen, hopefully it will be a fun experience that they will remember,” he says.

The first year my daughter Cheetah was a Pathfinder in 5th grade, we went on a campout at a local park and had a great time cook-ing Big Franks and marshmallows. It was a hot summer evening, but we were having fun. We had metal marshmallow roasting sticks to use over the fire and in the dark one of her fellow Pathfinders placed their just-used metal roasting stick on the seat of the wooden picnic table instead of on the ground or top of the table. My sweet redheaded girl was wearing shorts and then sat on that hot metal, suffering second degree burns on the back of both legs. So Pathfind-ers, beware of what you do and how it could affect others for good or bad. Be mindful of your actions. And have a great, safe Camporee!

ThereAre StillMiracles Now

Gouldwin Nathaniel Phan loves going to Oshkosh Pathfinder Camporee and GYC. On Friday of the 2017 GYC, Gouldwin walked about two miles while canvassing, but the next day when he woke up, his legs were hurting him. At the time, his mom thought that it might be a bleeding episode caused by his hemophilia. Sadly, his symptoms worsened, and his parents took him to the doctor after they arrived home. After numerous tests, labs, x-rays, CT-scans, and an MRI that came back negative, Gouldwin was transferred to the Loma Linda Children’s Hospital for more tests. There the doctor did a bone marrow test that came back positive, and Gouldwin was diagnosed with B-cell Acute Lymphoma Leukemia. “The night before his first test, after a month of chemo, while we were singing ‘God Will Take Care of You’ and praying, I experienced a feel-ing of joy only a mother can

feel when she gives birth,” ex-plains Gouldwin’s mother. “So I told Gouldwin that night that he’s going to be healed. And he sure was!” Indeed, Gouldwin’s bone marrow test came back with his blast cell (cancer cell) count at 0%. This was a miracle consid-ering that his blast cell count had grown from 10% to 90% in the two weeks before he had started his chemo treatment. Even though his blast cell count

was now 0%, Gouldwin still had to complete his chemo protocol. Gouldwin’s treatments started in mid February 2018. Thankfully he experienced no side effects and sustained high blood counts. During his second and third months of chemo, his blood counts dropped, but due to the grace of God, he stayed

well. “Another miracle was that God protected him from being sick or getting an infection even though his blood count was low and everyone at home was sick with a cold or flu,” his mother says. “The doctor and nurses were in awe.” By mid December Gouldwin will be in the maintenance stage of chemo, and by June of 2020 he will finished with chemo. According to his he-matologist, Gouldwin is only the 17th patient in the whole world who has hemophilia with leukemia. This is particu-larly unique since his birthday is also on the 17th. Gouldwin is looking forward to attending camporee and he hopes to be baptized there on his birthday. In response to his recovery and ability to attend camporee, Gouldwin’s mother says, “I thank God that He never leaves me nor forsakes me. He died on the cross for me and now He saved my son!”

“I thank God that He never leaves me nor forsakes me.”

Greg Constantine, emeritus research professor of art at Andrews University, has been an artist since the age of 5. He never wanted to be anything else. “Teaching at Andrews supported my family. I determined to share my studio work and God has led beyond my expectations,” he says.

Greg never thought he would publish books of his art, but that is a Cinderella story too. One of his 11 books is titled “Jesus of New York.” It’s about Jesus at 19 years old, set in today’s time period. Ron Whitehead saw the book and asked him if he could do something like that with the story of Da-vid, which led to the creation of Davey and Big G. Greg has always been a cartoonist and created this story as a book, but it was easily adapted for the Pathfinder paper. “Ideas came to me as I worked and that has always been my way of creating,” he says. “This is the first time I created something on the iPad pro but I still prefer pencil to paper and pen and ink for this kind of drawing. I am a painter however so I also feel comfortable using watercolor.” Davey is the underdog in the story but is totally confident of his talent and especially his trust in God to accomplish his destiny. Greg expects Pathfinders will see some similarities in his story and the biblical story. Greg’s favorite dialogue includes references like “sling shot hook,” “Bears and Lions football teams,” “Star of David” and “City of David, future birthplace of…” Follow Davey’s story every day in the newspaper and visit www.gconstantine.com to learn more about Greg’s total immersion in the art world.

“Really cool, I’m glad we came!” and “I learned so much” were just a few of the comments made about the North American Division Native Village during the 2014 Forever Faithful International Camporee. Ap-proximately 950 Pathfinders toured the Village during the five days of the Camporee. Each of the Pathfinders who completed the tour were given a signed coupon for proof of earning their Native American Lore patch. For those who would like their own chance to experience this, the North American Division Native Village is back at the 2019 Chosen International Camporee. The village will have four Native dwellings from

various areas of the NAD and will be staffed with Natives dressed in their individual tribal regalia. Represented areas include the Canadian Indige-nous people, Northern Plains Natives, Southwestern Natives and Central Plains Natives. There will also be sev-eral types of dwellings including a tipi, a replica of an igloo, a Navajo dwelling and a Cherokee lodge. Additionally, Pathfinders can look forward to a spe-cial Native dance exposition where they can learn the Round Dance, a traditional all nations dance. As Pathfinders are led through each area, the tribal representatives will explain their individual tribal customs and address stereotypical beliefs

held by many non-Natives. Native American Lore patch requirements will be provided throughout the tour and Pathfinders will be able to see and hear explanations of tribal areas of interest. Similar to the 2014 Camporee, NAD Native Ministries will be provid-ing trading pins that represent the North American Division Native people. To visit this unique cultural experience for yourself, be sure to stop by the Native American Lore activity site #109 on Thursday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. or Saturday from 1–5 p.m.

The hair pieces are custom made, vacuum-fitted cranial prostheses that are provided free of charge or on a sliding scale depending on the family financial need. In this photo Leilani Stowell cuts the hair of June Cross, who also donated her hair during the 2014 Camporee. Her husband, who died of cancer, loved her long hair and she continues to donate her hair in his honor.

A few years ago, the Pathfinders in a club in Paradise, California, made the choice to rename themselves the Paradise Prayer Warriors. Little did they know the meaning that this name would take on.

“Our kids have a hard time praying out loud, but we’ve seen a lot of miracles happen,” explains Terry Parsons, club director. These miracles have happened in many ways, ranging from seeing one of their staff mem-bers recover from a stroke and hearing that someone had made it onto a liver transplant list to making it through a vehicle breakdown on their way to the Forever Faithful 2014 International Camporee. By far this club’s biggest challenge came in November 2018 when the Camp Fire burned through Paradise, California, displacing countless families and burning homes down to the ground. Out of the Paradise Prayer Warrior club members, all of the staff member’s houses burned down and only four houses survived. Their church was also burnt down along with their Pathfinder room and all their supplies. Thankfully everyone in their club made it safely out. “We obviously had the armor of God with us. The flames surrounded us, but He walked through the flames with us,” Terry says. Sadly, because of the devastation, only 13 out of their 30 club members were able to stay in the area after the fire. One month after the fire, fami-lies texted Terry asking if they were going to have Pathfinders again. Even though many of them lived over an hour away because of the displace-ment, they began to meet again in a different church and family homes while they waited for a more permanent facility. “I have talked to people as we come through it,” says Terry. “When God says he has plans for us, He really does. Slowly but surely each family is starting to see that He has plans for them.” Despite the tragedy, the Paradise Prayer Warriors are excited to be at-tending Oshkosh. Thanks to numerous prayers and generous donations from a variety of sources, the club was able to purchase the new gear and

transportation they needed. They are hosting a club from Kenya and rejoining with the families who had to move away after the fire. Altogether they will have close to 53 people at Oshkosh. Even though there is still a significant amount of chaos and devastation the club will need to work through after Oshkosh, they are leaving it in God’s hands and trusting

He will continue to hear their prayers. “We really believe that our seeds have been spread and we just share what God has done,” explains Terry. “We went through a really tragic thing, but we aren’t standing in the ashes anymore. God has blessed us in every way.”

Blacksmiths are unique among the historic arts—an art which is an es-sential foundation of civilization. The motto of the first blacksmithing organization, the Worshipful Com-pany of Blacksmiths (one of the Livery Companies of the City of London, first mentioned in a court record in 1299 and granted the status of Company in 1571 by a Royal Charter) was “by hammer and hand do all arts stand.”

Blacksmiths have historically been known for having a very open, collab-orative culture in which they all work together to share secrets of the trade. Adventist blacksmiths are no excep-tion. They have used blacksmithing as an outreach tool and have successfully built relationships with non-Adventists who are here from Michigan, Virginia and Tennessee to teach the Blacksmith-ing honor at Camporee. The mission of the honor is “Teaching blacksmithing to lead kids to the cross,” as noted on the honor patch and the logo on the hats. While the Pathfinders get a chance to experience traditional blacksmithing, the instructors are teaching life lessons, exposing them to Christ in a way that will catch and hold their attention. Under the umbrella of the Michigan Conference, there are approximately 20 OSHA Compliant restored pre-WWII champion forges and a team of over 50 volunteers who will enable ap-proximately 1,000 people to earn the blacksmithing honor at the 2019 Cho-sen International Camporee. Henry Davis has been instrumental

in spearheading blacksmithing in the Pathfinder community and states, “We are unique in the blacksmithing world in that we offer a hands-on experi-ence to kids. Many groups won’t allow anyone under 18 access to the forge (especially when their parents are not there). Between the different events and activities we have completed we have introduced approximately 9,000 kids to working on a coal-fired forge.” Dusty Miller, maintenance supervi-sor of the residence halls at Southern Adventist University (SAU), also heads up the Southern Smiths, a blacksmith-ing club started in 2009. Dusty, a senior instructor, and five additional people from Tennessee are here at Oshkosh. Two Eagle Scouts from the community are also part of the group who volun-teered to come. While the two largest groups of instructors are from Michigan and SAU, instructors also came from the following conferences: Dakota, Georgia Cumberland, Illinois, Indiana, Northern California, Ohio, Oklahoma, Southern New England and Upper Columbia. Dorothy Stiegler, a long-time sup-porter of the Blacksmithing Honor, recently experienced a health setback. Despite this, she has been influential in assisting with arrangements where possible and encouraging all the onsite personnel. Dorothy is recognized by her peers as one of the best black-smiths in the world. All of these instructors believe that blacksmithing is an excellent way to teach pathfinders important life lessons. Not only does blacksmith-

ing affect every aspect of life (such as food, clothing, medical, transporta-tion, sanitation, entertainment and so on), it also teaches Pathfinders that they can be creative with their hands and minds in ways they may not have thought possible.

Additionally there are spiritual appli-cations with blacksmithing. “The Bible and Spirit of Prophecy talk about many aspects of blacksmithing and how they compare with our Christian walk of life,” says Dusty Miller. “It gives me a chance to build relationships with others and it has helped me understand the Bible better. It also gives me a chance to show and explain different aspects of the Christ-centered life and how He works with each of us.” To take part in this historic art, be sure to stop by activity site #115.
