WELCOME TO ETC

JONATHAN FOX ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

JILL SELTZERMANAGING DIRECTOR

ETC’s 40th season is living up to our promise of taking you to times and places you could not experience on your own.

Our opening production of The School for Lies took you back to 1666 Paris, thanks to David Ives’ adaption of Moliere’s Le Misanthrope. And, let’s admit it right now. How many of you anticipated the pure joy there would be in watching the professional growth of a failed Elvis impersonator become a very successful drag queen in The Legend of Georgia McBride? Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, our third production of the season, reminded us of how much has changed – and how much has stayed the same - in middle America between 1949 and 2019.

And today, thanks to Jonathan Safran Foer, Simon Block, Jonathan Fox and a talented cast and production team, you’re headed to Ukraine by way of Everything is Illuminated. You’ll

meet a wonderful collection of quirky characters who will give you insights into Ukraine’s history, culture, and sensibilities. Once you’ve seen this play, I predict that you’ll be unable to ignore any news article with “Ukraine” in the headline between now and April 22nd. That’s because there are 39 candidates running in the Ukrainian presidential race and the front-runner is Volodymyr Zelenskiy, a comedian who stars in a television series about a man who accidentally becomes president. The first round of voting resulted in Zekenskiy being the top vote getter and he will compete in a run-off election on April 21st. After seeing today’s performance, you’ll undoubtedly understand how that could happen in Ukraine. Enjoy the show!

Welcome to ETC!

In 2002, my mother handed me a copy of Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel Everything is Illuminated, saying “I think you’ll like this one.” That was an understatement. Foer’s inventiveness with form and language, and in no small part his hilarious wit, made me a rabid fan of his work. He’s one of the few writers (T.C. Boyle being another) whose New Yorker short stories I’ll read as soon as they appear.

It’s because of Foer’s novels’ ambitious experimentation, offbeat humor, and juxtaposition of several time strains that make adapting them so tricky, and why I find their film adaptations to be disappointing, missing the depth of his works as well as their tone. So I was skeptical when I received the stage adaptation of the novel, which had been presented at only two theaters in the U.S. I was impressed with the way the stage version captured

the essence of the novel – and much of its humor – while managing to create a dramatic arc and tension. Because the adaptation, written by a writer who works mostly in film and television, is quite cinematic, it presented challenges for a stage production. We endeavored to create a landscape that is more imaginative than realistic in an effort to embody the world of the novel; part road trip, part ghost story, refracted through the lens of magic realism.

Since we announced this production of Everything is Illuminated, I discovered that the novel has a cult following. We hope you enjoy it and thank you for being a part of ETC.

A NOTE FROM THE DRAMATURGIn the summer of 1999, novelist Jonathan Safran Foer traveled to Ukraine armed with the photograph of a woman who allegedly saved his grandfather from the Nazis. In his own words, “I found nothing but nothing, and in that nothing—a landscape of completely realized absence—nothing was to be found.” The novel that followed, Everything is Illuminated, was his attempt to satiate his own hunger for knowledge after the disappointment of his trip. Foer, taking fragments of information where he could, reimagined the journey through the eyes of a fictional version of himself, and through his comically inept Ukrainian translator, Alex. The novel was an instant success, propelling Foer into a literary career at age twenty-three.

Early in the novel, Foer constructs a fictional history of Trachimbrod, the shtetl of his ancestors. A group of villagers discover the wreckage of Trachim B (the shtetl founder)’s double-axle wagon in the Brod River. As they gather, various items from the wagon—a velvet glove, strands of white string, bits of broken glass—float to the surface. Observing these fragments, villagers try to piece together the sequence of events that led to Trachim B’s death. Shortly thereafter, the debate comes to an abrupt end when the daughter of the local rabbi discovers a newborn baby floating in the river amongst the wreckage.

Trachim B’s death and the child’s discovery could be read as an allegory for postmemory. Foer’s grandfather died before he met him, but the weight of his grandfather’s experience rested heavily upon Foer’s shoulders. Like the newborn, Foer was born into the memory of a trauma he had not experienced personally, but one that defined much of his life; like the villagers, he was left with fragments of a life to project upon, hoping perhaps futilely to find some larger meaning in the surviving pieces. Without historical fact or record to fill in the gaps of his grandfather’s life in Trachimbrod, Foer mediated his desire to know through imagined investment, projection, and creation. He invented a life.

The novel is rich with poetic language, detailed images, and a sort of historical ambiguity that at once challenges historicity and recognizes the past as a collection of stories we tell in the present.

“What has been is what will be,” it gently offers, and invites readers to speculate for themselves what it means to remember, to sojourn, and to love irrespective of time, space, and distance.

One of Shakespeare’s most beguiling plays, this story of tyrannical authority, sexual power, gender politics, and the question of morality is especially resonant in today’s #MeToo culture.

Jimmy Stewart meets The 39 Steps in this inventively comic and sweet radio play version of the beloved holiday story. A treat for the whole family.

A charming and clever musical adaptation – featuring 10 actors and 1 piano – of Jane Austen’s beloved novel about a beautiful, witty, self-centered young woman who plays matchmaker in disastrous ways.

A remarkably personal and poignant musical story of the woman whose unparalleled talent and unbridled personality made her a legend. Featuring her signature songs “Hey There (you with the stars in your eyes),” “Tenderly,” and “Come On-A My House.”

WEST COAST PREMIERE! Fresh from Broadway, this new play about an African-American teenager who is arrested one night is a breathtaking and nail-biting drama that looks at subtle and not-so-subtle racism in American culture.A co-production with The English Theatre Frankfurt, Germany

Thank YouTHE NEW VIC CAMPAIGN

— OUR CAPITAL CAMPAIGN DONORS —

The New Vic Campaign successfully raised $12.6 million from more than 275 individuals, corporations, foundations and organizations. The commitment of these steadfast supporters of Ensemble Theatre Company made it possible to renovate the 92-year-old Victoria Community Hall, transforming it into the New Vic. This state-of-the-art, 294-seat theater, unmatched on California’s Central Coast, opened in November 2013.

We are deeply grateful to these supporters’ extraordinary investment in the New Vic, which serves as the permanent home of Ensemble Theatre Company and has become the venue of choice for a wide range of Santa Barbara organizations and corporations.

An Honor Roll of Donors to the New Vic Campaign hangs in the New Vic lobby and is maintained on ETC’s website at etcsb.org/about/vic_donors.
