JONATHAN WYLDERJonathan Wylder was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire in 1957. He held his first one-man show of paintings inSalisbury City Library in 1973 where Sir Cecil Beaton was his first patron. His sculpture has since achievedincreasing critical and artistic acclaim and recognition both nationally and internationally.Since the beginning, Jonathan has been inspired by the beauty of the human form. Sculpting mainly inclay, which is then cast into bronze through the traditional lost wax process. More recently however hehas devoted more and more time to the traditional art of carving in stone and he takes great pleasure andcare in choosing Italian stone to import and work with. ùTessaû is testament to the high quality thatJonathan has taken many many hours, days, weeks and months to achieve through painstaking selftaught methods.Jonathan is particularly inspired by the sculptural quality of dance, and has shown his unique skill and loveof portraiture in his sculptural work with dancers from a variety of ballet companies, including FionaChadwick, former principal with the Royal Ballet. He also has also created many bronze equestrian sculptures. A keen rider himself, he is particularly noted for his life-sized bronzestatue of Milton, the international show jumper, as ridden by John Whittaker. In his successful career as a sculptor, Jonathan is further recognised for the prestigious commissions on which he has worked. Most notably, he created a five metre high, bronze statue for London’s Belgrave Square, commissioned by the Duke of Westminsteras a tribute to the first Marquis of Westminster.Jonathan has also completed a life sized, bronze portrait for the Scotsman Newspaper, unveiled in Edinburgh by the Queen. The Greek God, Atlas was also the subject of life size portrait that stands over four metres in height, commissioned by Anton Biltonto celebrate the new millennium, which is now placed at Tyringham Hall.Possibly his most moving creation is life-sized memorial portrait of Mother Teresa that wasunveiled in Calcutta, at the Sisters of Mercy Convent, where it has received and continues toreceive thousands of visitors.Recently, Jonathan has been working with Sharron Davies, who has inspired the creation of alife size mermaid. Currently Jonathan is in his studio working on a very creative project for theReed Foundation that will be unveiled next year.Further commission projects are planned in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and India.Jonathan’s work can be viewed in his exclusive gallery in Knightsbridge, London, where hissculptures and paintings are on permanent exhibition.Created in small, limited editions, the artwork on display in the gallery present the variety and energy of Jonathan’s unique, sculptural style, and reflect the ongoing evolution of his oeuvre.
