By An Anonymous Little BirdieCleveland, TN—Here is a little something that you may not know about. Glen Coro-nis, President and COO of U.S. Money Shops, won first place in his age group in Cleve-land’s Half Marathon & 5K on Saturday, May 13. Check into Cash was a sponsor of the race.

After leaving the competition panting in his wake, Glen played eighteen holes of golf before going home to take care of his lawn. That’s a pretty productive day!

PUTTING DONUTSWHERE YOUR MOUTH IS

Historic Benton Station, TN—There is no one who now comes from Benton Sta-tion, Tennessee.

They all come from Historic Benton Station, Tennessee.

It was the designation of that commu-nity as a Tennessee historic landmark that brought them out Wednesday to celebrate and remember.

All of this is linked to one man — Wil-liam Hinton Law-son.

Better known as “Bear,” it was in the early 1900s when the donation of land on his farm allowed the L&N Railroad to bring railroad service to the area, thereby transform-ing it into a bustling area of commerce.

The Benton Sta-tion Bridge was re-named in his honor during a January ceremony.

We d n e s d a y ’ s event recognized the historic signifi-cance of Lawson’s extraordinary gift of foresight.

With the approval of the Tennessee His-toric Commission, a new state marker was unveiled with what seemed like everyone from Polk County in attendance.

But, at its core, it was the residents and friends of Benton Station whose hearts swelled with pride as the significance of their community in Tennessee history

IT’S ‘HISTORIC’ BENTON STATION

was formally noted. It seemed proper, as County Executive

Hoyt Firestone noted, to give the Lord proper thanks for the day.

It was in fact “Bear” Lawson who pro-vided the seed money to establish Benton Station Baptist Church, which is located within sight of the new marker.

“A society grows great when men plant trees under whose shade they know they

will never sit,” said LaRonda Co-chran before be-ginning the morn-ing’s prayer. “More than 100 years ago, ‘Bear’ Lawson was planting trees which would pro-vide shade for fu-ture generations. He made investments in and around his farm that would affect the lives of those who came af-ter him.”

Firestone said the recent revelations of history piqued his interest in some of the names of places

around the county.“Benton Station was the result of a rail-

way station being established here,” he said. “But, the name is not what is impor-tant. It’s the character of the people that live in it — such as civic responsibility, generosity and the love of our neighbors. That is established strongly in the Benton Station community.”

Firestone said he had not been fully knowledgeable about the history of Ben-ton Station to the level he has over the last few months.

“If it wasn’t for Allan Jones, I probably would not have known,” Firestone said.

It was Jones’ attempt to trace his ances-tors which brought to his attention the story of “Bear” Lawson, and Jones’ foun-dation which spearheaded the move for the historic designation.

There is no Tennessee celebration com-plete without bluegrass, and a band made up of Phil Lea, Larry Guy, Buddy McClary, Doug Purdy and Ralph Jones twanged out a musical number with special lyrics framed around Benton Station and some of its memorable citizens and places.

State Sen. Mike Bell (R-Riceville) said he had been to numerous historical marker events, “but there has never been a crowd that approached this.”

“I credit that to two things,” Bell said. “One is how much you love your commu-nity. It’s evident.”

Bell said the other is for the work Jones has done through his foundation to get the designation secured.

“History does not define us, but it does make us a little more aware of who we are and where we came from,” Bell said. “You have a special place here and now you have a marker to recognize that.”

Jones noted the 100th anniversary of the birth of John F. Kennedy was recog-nized only a few days ago.

“John Kennedy was a man who made a difference,” Jones said of our 35th presi-

dent. “He envisioned taking a man to the moon and bringing him back again. To-day, we’re here to honor another man that made a difference, ‘Bear’ Lawson.’”

“The contribution ‘Bear’ Lawson made has been overlooked,” he added. “This might be the most historic situation in Polk County. If that railroad track had gone where it was originally scheduled to go, the town of Benton might not be here today.”

Edward Lea, who once ran the depot, spoke of about what the event meant to him.

“I want to thank ‘Bear’ Lawson, who I did not have the pleasure of knowing be-cause he had passed away before I came on the scene,” Lea said.

Lea expressed gratitude to Lawson for contributing his farm to what became part of Benton Station.

“Second, I want to thank the L&N Rail-road for supplying employment for seven families — probably the largest employer at that time,” Lea said.

After Lea’s remarks, everyone filed over to the site of the new marker and watched “Bear” Lawson’s two great-great-great-grandchildren, Emily and Eli Lane, do the honors.

After the ceremony, everyone ended the morning with a barbecue dinner in the fellowship hall of Benton Station Baptist Church — the same church which “Bear” Lawson helped to establish, located near the “Bear” Lawson Bridge and in the com-munity which his actions helped to estab-lish so many years ago.

Landmark gets distinction thanks to ‘Bear’ donationOriginally published in the Cleveland Daily Banner. Written by Brian Graves.

YOU WILL NEVER SPILL

AGAIN

Cleveland, TN—Does your day only start after downing a cup or two of hot, caffeinated coffee? Then you’ve probably also spilled a bit of joe in your lifetime. If you’ve ever gotten a cup of coffee from the breakroom at the Jones Companies corporate headquarters, your days of coffee spilling are over!

Thanks to design innovation, the new coffee cups in the break room reduce spill possibilities by as much as ninety-three percent.

According to a source who agreed to be interviewed under promise of complete anonymity, the new break cups have a more narrow bottom and a wider mouth. While the uneducated would suspect this design would make the cups less stable, the Courier’s source explained that this striking new design actually creates a vortex. Should the cup become destabilized while you are jog-ging to a meeting or performing simple yoga poses, this vortex works to pull the coffee into the center of the Styrofoam cup, thereby reducing the possibility of spillage to practically nil.

Despite its ability to prevent coffee from spilling in normal circumstances, the new and improved coffee cups continue to have one of the same weaknesses of its predessesor. Because it is made of Styrofoam, it can bend in ways that creates cracks in the cup, through which coffee can leak.

Columbus, OH—In Early March, I went to compete at the Arnold Sports Festival. Originally, this was suppose to be in Australia but we just were not able to go for sev-eral reasons, but competing in the states turned out to be better anyway!

I competed in two events—the deadlift challenge and the tandem deadlift challenge. I won the deadlift chal-lenge with a 551-pound deadlift. I wanted to break the record of 600 pounds, but I just did not have it in me that day.

The lady I performed the tandem deadlift with is Crys-tal Tate. She held the deadlift record, so it was really cool to not only do the tandem deadlift with her, but we also set the women’s tandem deadlift record at 1,000 pounds!

At the time, I didn’t know I’d won the single person deadlift challenge. When they announced me as the win-ner I was surprised but obviously excited. So I took ad-vantage of the moment and lifted the belt I won above me like I had just won the WWE Championship!

Two weeks after the Arnold competition, in late March I competed in the Middle Georgia Strongest Man contest as a professional strongwoman competitor. What does this mean? That as a professional (a title I earned last year from winning the World competition), I now have to compete with heavier weights. In other words, I had to lift the same implements the middleweight men lifted

COLEMANSTRONGBy Samantha ColemanCheck Into Cash OnlineCustomer Service Representative

(yes, I did outlift most of them). In the picture from this event, I’m deadlifting a car without any straps, as assis-tance is never a good idea. I took the straps off because I got frustrated with them. The picture is particularly fun-ny to me, because it clearly shows my frustration. Also, you can see my husband laughing at me as he does when I get frustrated. Regardless, I won this competition as well. [Editor’s note: You can see Sam’s husband laughing at her by viewing the full picture at thejcc.co.]

The most recent even I competed in was the Women’s Pro-Am powerlifting meet, which is the biggest female competition in the world.

Here I finally tied the deadlift record of 600 pounds. I wanted to break it, but I’m good friends with Crystal (the record holder), and I thought it would be neat to share the record with her instead.

In May, I was a keynote speaker for the GRRRL Live in Vegas conference put on by the GRRRL Clothing Company. This is a weekend-long women’s empower-ment conference during which we shared our stories of overcoming adversity. GRRRL doesn’t carry traditional sizes. Instead, they use the measurements of their mod-els/athletes and name the size after that athlete. I was an-nounced as the latest size in the clothing line called “Size Sam,” and this size will be based on my measurements. Very exciting!

Other world-renowned athletes, such as MMA fight-ers Holly Holmes and Cyborg, are sponsored by GRRRL Clothing Company. As you can see, I struck a “face off ” pose with Cyborg. Although I’m bigger than her, she is kind and humble, but very intimating all at once.

Cleveland, TN—One of the charity or-ganizations I am involved with is called Hannah’s Care Packages. They have an amazing mission I would love to share with you!

The Mission of Hannah’s Care Pack-ages is “To bring hope, encouragement, and support to parents of children with life-threatening illnesses or chronic con-ditions, by bringing care packages filled with items they may need during hospital stays.” Hannah’s Care Packages operates worldwide to deliver care packages, but more importantly, hope to these fami-lies and to their children through the joint efforts of gracious volunteers and do-nations. Currently, they are looking for Ambassadors of Hope who might be will-ing to help their small non-profit organization.

Right now HCP is launch-ing the “Be Anchored Cam-paign” to raise funds for much-needed supplies as well as sharing the word about their organization. Currently, the biggest need is resupplying the beautiful

tote bags we use to put items in. Their first batch of tote bags were generously do-nated (including beautiful printed labels and all), but they are nearly out of those bags. To participate in the “Be Anchored Campaign,” just post a video or a picture with a description on your Facebook or Instagram account of what it means for you to “Be Anchored” and tag HCP on Instagram or Facebook under #hannahs-carepackages or Hannah’s Care Packages.

Would you like to help in other ways? You can become an Ambassador of Hope by sharing the organization and their vi-

sion with your friends and family and on social media. You can also set up a collec-tion box in your office to collect the sort of items they deliver in their care packages. Or you can donate directly from Hannah’s Care Packages’ website or volunteer to de-liver packages in your area. HCP has de-livered hundreds of care packages as well as much-needed hope to families who need it the most!

Here is a list of items HCP puts in their packages:

Small travel sized items: shampoo, con-ditioner, body wash, Q-tips, makeup-re-

moving towelettes, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes, dental floss, journals, pens, soft throw blankets, warm socks

Snacks: granola bars, Clif Bars, al-monds, mints, gum, instant coffee, pack-ets of tea or hot cocoa

Other: Kleenex, lip balm, ponytail hold-ers, small hairbrushes and combs, hand lotion, inexpensive phone chargers, mag-azines, word find books, coloring books

DEAR FIFI,I’m overweight and can’t

stand to look at myself in the mirror. I want to love myself, but it’s so hard.

It all started when my wife left me, but that was seventy-five pounds ago.

I don’t want to keep living this way. So how do I make me like me again?

Thanks,Big and Burdened

DEAR B & B,First of all, the outside ap-

pearance is separate from your inside appearance. You have to work on both. Try walking. Increase your distance gradu-ally. Meditate while walking. Cut back on carbs. Eat more veggies, lean protein, and nothing past 6 p.m.

Once you see the pounds starting to melt, pick one day a week—the same day every week—and eat one thing you miss.

Good luck and let me know how this works for you. Re-member you did not get this way overnight. Stay focused.

Peace and love, Fifi

We want to congratulate you on the outstanding job you have done. I know that you have really worked so hard, and the promotion is well deserved.

EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTHFrom the WestArlin Gomez, Customer Service Rep-

resentative at Check Into Cash Center 9030 (1689-A East Highland Avenue)

San Bernadino, CA—Arlin is an ex-ceptional CSR. She previously worked at the Amazon warehouse before she joined our family in February of 2016.

Her posi-tive atti-tude and outstand-ing cus-t o m e r s e r v i c e i m p a c t s e v e r y -

one around her. She is always a team play-er and a true asset to our district. Arlin is a rising star with a bright future!

From the EastMarcie Moore, Manager of Check

Into Cash Center 6089 (149 Stetzer Road)

A huge congratulations to our latest Employee of the Month winners. Each received a $500

gift card and a plaque!Bucyrus, OH—Marcie has really been there as a team player and has participat-ed within her community several times over the six years she has been with the company. She is always willing to help out neighboring centers with-out even blinking an eye.

Marcie participated in her local bratwurst festi-val last year and really en-joyed the interaction with her community. She plans on participat-ing every year.

Six years ago, Marcie was hired as a cus-tomer service manager and has moved her way up to Center Man-ager by dedi-cating herself every day to ensure her center is as successful as it can be. She has managed 6089 for three years and those three years have been great!

Some additional points to describe Marcie’s success are as follows:

1. Marcie ensures her employees are 100-percent up to par with the expecta-tions of a Check Into Cash employee. Be-cause of this, her Assistant Center Man-ager was promoted to Center Manager of a neighboring center, after being training under Marcie. Marcie’s CSR was then pro-moted to Assistant Center Manager as

soon as her Insight was finished. Again, this was due to the CSR’s quick learning

under Marcie’s management. 2. Marcie has also managed her area’s number-one title location.

No Center has surpassed 6089 this year or last when it comes to amount of new business and/or title receiv-ables, resulting in very high

revenue results!Center 6089 is also able to

maintain a fairly large GM percentage every

month due to Mar-cie’s ability to moni-tor growth versus collections. Al-

though she may have a month or two, very

rarely, that gets away from her, she is able to bounce b a c k

q u i c k l y with a posi-

tive attitude, always aiming

for future goals. Marcie is also

able to discuss her business accu-rately and confidently.

Marcie is a pure pleasure to work with!

From CorporateAlex Musick, Loan By Phone Soft-

ware DeveloperCleveland, TN—We are currently be-

ing examined by the state of Alabama, who has asked for documentation for ap-proximately 1,300 loans.

Manually pulling the agreements is hugely time-consuming. I can pull about 50 per hour if there are no other demands on my time.

Alex heard me discussing this with the audit team, when I said it would take me about 26–30 hours just to pull the agree-ments. Alex, working at home on his own time, designed an automated process to pull these loan agreements and is con-tinuing to refine the process so we can use the tool to pull other audit requests

as well. He single-handedly saved at least 30 hours of

my time and his tool will continue to be used for future audits.

HOME REMEDIES Deep Vein Thrombosis

First of all, there is a difference between a vein and an artery. A vein car-ries blood to the heart, and the arteries carry away from it.

So when you’re talking about the deep vein, it has something to do with the heart. And if it gets clogged up, then you’ll have to get a bypass surgery or something like that to get the congestion out of the veins.

You’ve got to go deep to clean it out to fight off deep vein thrombosis. How you like them apples? Note: Dr. Livingston is WOOP FM’s resident physician. Never heed his ad-

vice. Unless it seems to make sense. And then, please do. Just know that we do not back any claims made by the doc.
