Due to the cancellation of public Masses we will suspend requests for
intentions until further notice. Mass intentions that have been requested
and already scheduled will be honored during Fr. Pastorius’ daily private
Mass in the order that they were scheduled. Since he is saying only one
Mass a day there will be an abundance of requests that will not be
fulfilled until our schedule returns to normal. Please know that all
intentions not used during this time will be rescheduled when normal
Masses resume.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Parish Office is CLOSED.
Employees will be coming in periodically to check mail and voicemails and
many are continuing to work from home. Please be patient as we all adjust
to this new way of doing business. If you need to speak to someone in the
office but are not sure who to direct your call to, please leave a message for
Maria Murillo and she will be sure to forward your request/question to the
correct employee. She can be reached at 636-227-5247 ext. 1604.

From the Pastor Notas del Párroco 3
1. Letter Regarding School
Dear St. Joseph Parishioners,
One of the formal prayers that I include
in my daily prayers is called the Prayer for
Resignation to God’s will:
Lord, if what we seek be according to Your will,
then let it come to pass and let success attend the
outcome. But if not, my God, let it not come to pass.
Do not leave us to our own devices, for you know
how unwise we can be. Keep us safe under your
protection Lord our God, and in your own gentle
way guide us and care for us as You know best. We
ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen
I have always found this prayer to be
both powerful and helpful because it
intentionally reminds me that God’s plans
for my life are even better for me than the
plans that I have for my own life. The
prayer gives me hope because it prompts
me to recall that God sees the entire
playing field and I only see a small section
of the board. Finally, it inspires me to
recall the stories of Scriptures and it
therefore aids me to trust in God during
difficult times.
I share this prayer with you now because
despite the overwhelming generosity of the
people of the parish and the hard work of
so many, it has become evident to me that
God desires for St. Joseph Parish to go
forward towards the future without a full-
time school and that the 2019-2020 school
year should be the last year for St. Joseph
School.
Our parish was making great progress
towards being able to address the many
issues concerning our school viability. Our
Legacy Wall fundraiser for the parish was a
huge success, our plans to expand the Early
Childhood Learning Center were on track,
and we had a very successful Catholic
Schools Week.
Then the Coronavirus hit our parish
hard, not only spiritually but also
financially. Our Sunday collections went
down over 60% during the time of social
distancing when we did not have any
public Masses. In addition, we stopped
receiving any income from the Early
Childhood Learning Center during this
same time. We also know that this time of
social distancing has not only affected the
parish financially, but many of our
parishioners as well.
Also during our time of social distancing,
our principal, Mr. Sturgill, informed the
school community that he had decided to
take on a new job as principal of St.
Stephen School in South St. Louis closer to
his home. Three other faculty members
have decided to retire or take teaching
positions elsewhere. Our efforts to be
transparent and discuss this situation with
our school parents resulted in some
parents deciding to enroll their children in
a different school.
I have shared with all of you from the
beginning that the following words from
St. John Paul II have been the words that
have guided me: “Let us remember the past
with gratitude, live the present with
enthusiasm, and look forward to the future
with confidence.” As much as I am
tempted to look to the past to blame
someone or some group for our current
situation, I know that it will not change
our situation or bring about any sort of
healing. I choose therefore to focus on
being grateful to everyone who has prayed
so fervently, worked so hard, and given so
much to keep St. Joseph School open for
these many years, especially our amazing
faculty.
With a heart full of sadness, I make this
announcement. I have tried to live in the
present with enthusiasm by focusing on
the many great relationships I have made
working so hard with all of you to keep our
school alive. We truly gave it our best
shot. I also know that if there is any parish
in the Archdiocese that can move forward
without a K-8 school it is St. Joseph Parish.
It will be a challenge, but one that I am
sure that we are more than capable of
facing as we pray and work together to
discover a new way of being Church.
Finally, I am challenging myself, and I
invite all of you to look to the future with
confidence. Some of the staff and I have
already begun brainstorming ideas about
how St. Joseph can show other parishes
that it is possible to be a vibrant parish
without a school because other parishes
may eventually find themselves in a similar
situation. We also look forward to making
our Early Childhood Learning Center even
more extraordinary.
Just as St. Joseph discovered that God’s
plan for him was not only confusing but
also much more rewarding than the plans
that he had for his own life, may we,
through the intercession of St. Joseph, put
aside our dreams for this wonderful parish
so that we may be able to put God’s dream
for our parish into action.
With deep gratitude for the past,
enthusiasm for the present, and hope for
the future,
Fr. Thomas M. Pastorius
2. Public Masses to Begin Archbishop
Carlson has given permission for public
Masses to begin on Monday, May 18
th
so
we will begin to resume our regular Mass
schedule on May 18
th
starting with 6:30am
and 8:30am Masses. The Archbishop has
asked that parishes follow all health and
safety guidelines. Please visit our parish
website for more info and to watch a short
video on what these procedures will be.
3. New Mercies For the last couple of
weeks during our time of social distancing,
I have been producing some daily Scripture
Reflections that I have entitled “New
Mercies.” The title comes from the
following quote: “The Lord’s acts of mercy
are not exhausted, his compassion is not
spent; they are renewed each morning”
– Lamentations 3:22-23a. You can find
these videos posted on our website and on
our Facebook page. I will be continuing
these reflections even though our time of
social distancing is coming to an end. Also,
stay tuned for an update coming to Elevate,
our Sunday morning Zoom session.
4. First Communion Even with the
opportunity to celebrate public Mass
again, we will be under a lot of limitations
that will prevent us from filling our church
building to its normal capacity. We are
looking at a few options on how best to
celebrate First Communions at this time
and will have a plan in place soon. Sorry
for the delay. We just do not know what
the future looks like at this time.
5. Larger Gatherings While public
Masses are beginning again, the
Archbishop has not given permission for
other larger gatherings to take place. As
restrictions lessen, we will do our best to
restart other aspects of parish life. Many of
our groups have continued to meet over
Zoom. You may think about joining one of
their Zoom meetings.
6. Celebrating a Deceased Loved One’s
Life During the strange time of social
distancing, some of us lost loved ones and
did not have the ability to celebrate their
life in the way that we may have wished
because of the restrictions. If you would
like to celebrate a deceased loved one’s life
now, please contacted David Broemmelsick
at [email protected] to
schedule a memorial Mass. We will be
happy to host a funeral luncheon for you as
well once restrictions are lifted. We do ask
that families pay the cantor and musician.
There will be no Church fee and a donation
to the priest is acceptable but not needed.
“As Americans, as Catholics and
as pastors of our people, we
write therefore today to call our
fellow citizens back to our
country's founding principles,
and most especially to renew
our national respect for the
rights of those who are unborn,
weak, disabled and terminally
ill. Real freedom rests on the
inviolability of every person as a
child of God.”

Spiritual Ponderings
Coronavirus & the Sacraments
I am using an article that I read to guide my reflections on the Church and the Coronavirus. The
article is called: “Epidemic Danger and Catholic Sacraments” and was written by a theologian
named Thomas Joseph White. Quotes from his article will be in bold and my commentary and
reflections will be in normal font. Thomas Joseph White, O.P., is director of the Thomistic Institute in Rome.
There are many other medieval and early modern examples that could be cited, but much
more recently, in 1918, the churches in many parts of the United States closed for public
worship during the Spanish Flu. In New Orleans (hardly a Protestant city) the city ordered
that churches had to close, which did prompt some outcry from Catholic pastors who said
that this had not been done during earlier epidemics. They were in error. Old moral theology
manuals classically indicate that one of the reasons a priest can celebrate Mass
privately without a server is due to plague, which shows that earlier moralists understood
that priests might not be able to celebrate publicly during such times. The bottom line is that
the Catholic Church generally did whatever was reasonable to prevent the spread of disease
and to comply with rational city ordinances.
Jesus, in the temptation stories, tells the devil that “it is not good to put the Lord your God to the
test.” And throughout the Gospels He is always confronted by the Pharisees and Scribes
demanding that He perform some sort of miracle. This normally happens right after He has
performed an amazing miracle like the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. Maybe the miracle
that He has performed in these cases is creating creatures (human beings) with the capacity to
overcome these problems using their reason and intellect. Remember God did not create illness
and natural disasters. These happen because sin throws the world into chaos. Jesus did though
conquer sin and death and walks with us even during these hard times.
Secondly, it is in fact seriously unethical to attribute to the leaders of the Catholic Church
the principal intention of selfishly trying to protect themselves from getting sick. (The
technical word here is “calumny.”) Bishops and priests do have the right to try to avoid
getting sick, as a matter of fact, and it is a natural right that cannot be denied to them even if
one disagrees with their prudential decisions. More to the point, they also can infect older
members of their communities who will be likely to die. (As I write this, two older
Dominican priests I know have died from the virus this past week, and dozens of others are
struggling with the illness. I wonder how many of my confreres will have to die before critics
will concede that it is reasonable for younger priests who live in rectories with them to take
serious precautions?) But this set of concerns, while legitimate, is in fact secondary. The
primary issue the bishops are concerned with is the protection of others. This virus spreads
through social contact, purely and simply. Often those who have it are asymptomatic and
can transmit it even when they think they are healthy enough to say Mass or attend Mass.
I remember a priest giving a homily saying that “he wished that his wishing would make pizza
nonfattening,” but alas he knew no matter how much he wished, traditional pizza would never be
nonfattening. I wish this virus was not transmitted the way that it is. I wish that I could say
Mass with all of you in the pews, but not if it means that I would be responsible for the death of
any of you.
In saying this I am presuming that some essential services can and should be made available
to the laity, such as keeping churches open for public prayer or Eucharistic adoration with
spatial distancing. Churches should be able to provide confessions in safe circumstances,
facilitate anointings, and carry out private marriage ceremonies and baptisms, all under the
guidance of due prudence. I’m also presuming that the measures enacted by the bishops are
temporary, as clearly, they are intended to be. A worldwide pandemic of this nature is not an
ordinary event, and thus leads to many uncertainties in the short and long term. That the
Church should suspend public Masses temporarily is defensible as the most reasonable
course of action given the novel and unpredictable nature of the illness. It is objectively the
best course in such circumstances to err on the side of safety in the protection of life.
When I get really frustrated with everything, I remind myself that a month or two is really not
that long of a time in an institution that has lasted for close to 2,000 years. It is a reminder to me
that what irritates me most is that I do not have control of the future. I don’t know when
“normal” will be here or even what “normal” will look like. I then remind myself that it is not my
job to know. It is my job to remain holy during this time. What I mean by “holy” is to “love
everyone as God loves them.” How am I doing that to the best of my ability?

Safe Environment Program Compliance Update
Anyone who works with or volunteers with children or
vulnerable adults must be compliant with the Safe Environment
Program of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis. The Archdiocese has
developed a new system for safe environment compliance called
Prevent and Protect STL.
Everyone (clergy, employees and volunteers) ministering to
minors and vulnerable adults in the Archdiocese is required
to register in the new system before December 31, 2020.
This includes those new to service and those who are currently
in service. For those who have already attended a Protecting
God’s Children workshop, your previous training date will
transfer to this new system. All clergy, volunteers, and
employees will register for an updated background screening,
view two new online training modules on abuse reporting and
the Code of Ethical Conduct, and agree to the updated Code of
Ethical Conduct. Please go to www.preventandprotectstl.org to
register. The passcode is stlprotect. More info can be found at
https://www.stjoemanchester.org/safe-environment-program.
If you have questions or need assistance with this process, please
contact Maureen O’Reilly in the parish office,

When SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital opened
its doors as the nation’s first free-standing Catholic pediatric
hospital, a promise was made to the community that any child in
need of care would be welcomed, whether their parents could afford
to pay for care or not. That promise still holds true today.
St. Louis has a long tradition of responding generously in times of
crisis, coming together in solidarity to give hope to those in need.
SSM Health Cardinal Glennon is a proud part of that tradition, and
we need you now more than ever.
In this extraordinary time of crisis, our costs to deliver care are
extraordinary as well. Now is the time for our dear friends in the
faith community to come together and partner with us as we uphold
a commitment to our mission of faith-filled health care services,
delivered by some of the region’s best caregivers: Through our
exceptional health care services, we reveal the healing presence of God.
Please join us by making a gift during Glennon Sunday weekend,
June 6-7, online at glennon.org. Together we will continue to make
miracles possible bringing God’s love and joy into the lives of our
young patients. On behalf of our patients and families, may God
bless you for providing hope, healing, faith and compassion to every
child who walks through the doors at SSM Health Cardinal
Glennon.

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. They do not need to wear a
cape or be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Neither
Marvel nor Disney has a cornerstone on the hero market. During
these challenging times, all around us, we see everyday people
doing extraordinary things. We're coming together as a parish
community to honor the workers and volunteers who are making a
difference. To the healthcare providers, first responders, delivery
drivers, sanitation workers, mail carriers, supermarket cashiers,
schoolteachers, and thousands of others, we say thank you.
We'd like to take our appreciation one step further. If you know a
parishioner who is that hero making a difference in their essential
work, we want to know. Please send us their picture for our
"Everyday Heroes" display. They will be recognized through the
bulletin, website and visual display in the church. When we are
able to return as a community, we will all see the faces of the many

Sharing the Gospel Jesus gave us two commandments. The first
is Love God above all things and the second is Love your neighbor
as yourself. Make good choices. Put God first in your life. Say a
prayer before getting out of bed every morning. Say a prayer every
night. Treat others like you would like to be treated. If you love
Jesus and obey his commandments, the Holy Spirit will be sent to
help you.
Prayer Jesus, help me be kind and helpful to my family and
friends.
Something to Draw Draw yourself saying a prayer before you
get out of bed in the morning.
Mission for the Week Every morning and every night I will
thank God for my family and friends.
Sunday Mass recorded at St. Joseph is available on
the parish website.
Daily Masses (Monday through Saturday) from
Bishop Barron’s private chapel are also available
on the parish website.
