The centre is composed ofsteins characteristicallyindividually articulatedblocks: 46 guest rooms,loungeanddinning roomin one,

connected by porticoes andground level and rooftopverandahs.

The guest room wing has also been given a curved form

which approaches and then recedes away from the Lodigardens site boundary.

The surrounding north wing of survices and the west wingof the guest rooms have been raised up on piers, bringing theLodi tombs into framed view and creating a large verandahbeneath.

interior and shaded space courtyardsand gardens.

Each courtyard and garden at theIIC has a difference function andaspect.

CONSTRUCTIONThe construction methods and

procedures employed in thebuilding of the Indiainternational centre weretypical of the methods and skilllevels available in India at thetime of construction(1958-62).

The pre-casting of some of theelements on the ground wasundertaken in order to ensurehigh quality construction, both

in terms of structural integrityand finish.

The IIC is virtually a hand-made building.

The concept of IHC is based onenvironmental and regional

planning energy and itsjudicious use, relevance oftechnology, transport and

communication, lifestyle socialand cultural linkage, fiscalpolicies, legal and managementsystem and informationtechnology

which are interconnectedby means of aerialwalkways.

There is also a basementfloor for parking of around1000 cars.

The external facade is in alanguage of exposed redbrick, exposed concrete

and glass.

protected from both the excesses of tropical sunshine and

motor traffic of the adjacent heavily trafficked interaction

constructiona reinforced concrete framewith an infill of concreteblock and brick cladding.

The attention to finishes ishigh at the India habitatcenter,

employs carefully conceivedpaving patterns in thecourtyards

variegated brick coursing in

buildings vertical pier whichare accented by tile facing tothe rain water channel,vertical garden elements

the area below the extendedbrow which caps the complexascending form.
