A Q U I C K I N T R O D U C T I O N T O MEI AM A CHINESE BORN CANADIAN AND I GREW UP IN A TYPICAL CHINESE HOME. I STUDIED HARD IN SCHOOL, PRACTICED PIANO, AND PARTICIPATED IN
OTHER NUMEROUS EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITES. LIKE MOST CHINESE FAMILIES, MY STUDIES WERE STRESSED WITH THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE. AS I GREW UP, I BEGAN TO NOTICE MY TALENT AND LOVE FOR DRAWING. I TOOK SEVERAL ART PROGRAMS TO FURTHER MY INTEREST AND EXPLORE NEW
ART MEDIUMS. INEVITABLY, THE TIME CAME TO CHOOSE BETWEEN ART AND THE SCIENCES.
I WAS ADMITTED INTO HEALTH SCIENCES TO STUDY MEDICINE. HOWEVER, WITHIN ONE SEMESTER, I KNEW THAT MEDICINE WAS NOT WHAT I WANTED TO DO. THUS, I SWITCHED INTO THE BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS PROGRAM. I WAS ABLE TO TRULY DISCOVER MYSELF BY EXPRESSING MY IDEAS
THROUGH DRAWING, AND EVENTUALLY THROUGH PAINTING AND PRINTMAKING. I ENRICHED MY STUDIES BY TRAVELING TO EUROPE AND SEEING THE MASTERWORKS IN PERSON. AFTER TWO YEARS OF PURELY CREATING ART, I FOUND THAT MY TALENT COULD GO BEYOND THE TWO DIMENSIONAL
ILLUSORY RENDERINGS INTO SOMETHING MORE CONCRETE.
I STUDIED A MINOR IN ARCHITECTURE, WHICH LED TO THE MASTERS OF ARCHITECTURE DEGREE. COMPARED TO SOME OF MY CLASSMATES, I WAS VERY INEXPERIENCED, BUT BY THE END I HAD LEARNED A GREAT DEAL, ACADEMICALLY AND SOCIALLY. I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPRESS MY ART
THROUGH MATERIAL AND DIGITAL FABRICATIONS, AND LEARN MULTIPLE COMPUTER PROGRAMS. IT ALSO CHALLENGED MY THINKING FROM DESIGNING ON A SIMPLE CANVAS TO DESIGNING A STRUCTURALLY SOUND BUILDING THAT IS COMPOSITIONALLY APPEALING AND RESPONSIVE TO A CULTURAL
CONTEXT. HOWEVER, THE GREATEST LESSON I LEARNED WAS APPRECIATING THE NEED FOR REST: A TIME TO PAUSE, REFLECT, AND APPRECIATE.
DURING MY STUDIES ABROAD IN BARCELONA SPAIN, I LEARNED TO BALANCE LIFE AND WORK. HAVING SUCH AN INTENSELY DISCIPLINED BACKGROUND HAD HINDERED MY ABILITY TO RELAX AND ENJOY WHERE I WAS IN LIFE. IT WAS ALSO DURING THIS TIME WHEN I ENHANCED MY LOVE FOR ART INTO AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW A CULTURE AFFECTS THE WAY ART AND ARCHITECTURE IS MADE. PREVIOUSLY I HAD BEEN IMPRESSED
WITH WORKS OF ART AND ARCHITECTURE, BUT MISSED THE CONNECTION TO CULTURE. I WAS BLESSED WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPAND MY EXPERIENCE FROM EUROPE, TO THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES AND OMAN IN THE EAST, AND TO SOUTH AFRICA IN THE SOUTH.
SO AFTER TWENTYFOUR YEARS OF EDUCATION AND IDENTITY SHAPING, I HAVE CONCLUDED THAT I STILL HAVE A LOT TO LEARN. HOWEVER, I KNOW I HAVE THE BASICS FOR CONTINUING MY FUTURE: KEEP PURSUING WHAT I LOVE, NEVER STOP LEARNING, AND TO LOVE LIFE.

REDEFINING SPACES | SPATIAL RHYTHM OF THE SENSESPROJECT: SPATIAL RHYTHM OF THE SENSES IS AN URBAN PROJECT
GROUNDED ON THE STREET OF AVINGUDA DE ROMA IN BARCELONA, SPAIN. ITS GENESIS CAME FROM STUDYING THE UNIQUE RESIDUAL
GEOMETRIES THAT ARE A CONSEQUENCE OF CERDA’S GRID AND HIS PRIORITIZATION OF CIRCULATION ROUTES THROUGHOUT THE CITY.
THE GEOMETRIES BECAME THE FOCUS FOR SYNTHESIZING SENSORAL RHYTHMS THAT ARE UNIQUE TO THE SPATIAL QUALITIES OF BARCELONA.
A PROJECT COLLABORATION WITH MADYSON MCKAY AND BRETT OSNESSCONCEPT + FORM: THE SENSORAL QUALITIES THAT WE MEASURED WERE BUILDING MASSING, SUN AND SHADOW, SOUND LEVELS, VEGETATION, AND POPULATION
DENSITIES. WE NOTICED THAT THE SPANISH WERE VERY ENTWINED WITH THEIR COMMUNITY AND IMMEDIATE SURROUNDINGS. THUS, WE DESIGNED SIX BUILDINGS THAT REFLECTED THE IMMEDIATE CULTURAL SURROUNDINGS AND INFUSED SENSORAL RHYTHMS TO DIVERSIFY SPACES WITHIN THE MONOTONOUS GRID. THEIR
FORMS WERE GENERATED FROM PERSPECTIVAL LINES AND VECTORS PROJECTED FROM SURROUNDING BUILDINGS. EACH INDIVIDUAL BUILDING WAS THEN PROGRAMMED BASED ON ITS PROXIMITY TO A PARTICULAR CULTURAL PROGRAM. THE SPECIFIC PROGRAMMING DICTATED CERTAIN TYPES OF SENSORIES TO BE
ENHANCED OR DIMINISHED. THIS WAS ATTAINED BY MATERIAL CHOICES, PROXIMITY TO VEGETATION AND/OR SURROUNDING BUILDINGS, DIFFERENCE IN ELEVATION, AND VISUAL TRAJECTORIES, WHICH ALL PARTICULARIZED SPECIFIC SPACES AND INFLUENCED CIRCULATION IN THE IMMEDIATE AND SURROUNDING CONTEXT. THE
FINISHED PROJECT IS A SECONDARY SCHOOL THAT IS INTEGRATED CONTEXTUALLY AND CONCEPTUALLY INTO THE SPANISH COMMUNITY.

MUSEUM OF CULTURAL AND SOCIAL ENERGIES | MORPHCONCEPT + FORM: THE INITIAL IDEA FOR THE FORM WAS THAT IT WOULD OPEN AND CLOSE THROUGH FOLDING. ORIGAMI BECAME THE SOURCE FOR A
SPHERICAL FORM IN ORDER TO INCREASE THE POTENTIAL FOR SOLAR ABSORPTION. AS A RESULT, THE BUILDING IS AN AGGREGATE OF TRUNCATED ICOSEHEDRONS ARRANGED ALONG A CURVE WITH OPERATIVE PANELS OF DIFFERENT PLASTICITIES TO FURTHER INCREASE SOLAR COLLECTION. THE
STRUCTURE IS A GEODESIC DOME, COMPRISED OF NODES AND MEMBERS AND CLAD IN A TRIPLE-LAYERED ETFE PILLOW WHILE THE OPERATIVE PANELS ARE A SINGLE LAYERED ETFE SHEET. ETFE IS 1% THE WEIGHT OF GLASS, THEREFORE IT DOES NOT GREATLY AFFECT THE STRUCTURE. THE UPPER SPHERE
RELIES ON A STRUCTURAL CORE, AS WELL AS MINOR LATERAL SUPPORT FROM THE ADJACENT DOMES, WHICH DISTRIBUTE THE LOADS UNIFORMLY. WITHIN EACH STRUCTURAL DOME IS ANOTHER SCALED DOME, PROVIDING A CAVITY FOR A THERMAL BREAK AS WELL AS MECHANICAL NECESSITIES. HEAT GAINS
AND LOSSES ARE INHERENT TO THE DOME, THUS THERMAL MASS IS USED TO ABSORB HEAT DURING THE DAY AND RELEASE IT AT NIGHT AND PANELS OPEN TO INTAKE FRESH AIR AND TO EXHAUST WARM AIR. IN ADDITION, BECAUSE OF THE INTENSITY OF SOLAR HEAT GAIN DUE TO THE TRANSPARENCY OF
ETFE, WE HAVE PRINTED A HEXAGON GRID ONTO THE OUTER AND INNER LAYER OF EACH PILLOW SO THAT WHEN THEY ARE FILLED TO A CERTAIN POINT, THE PATTERNS MATCH UP TO PROVIDE SHADING INSIDE THE BUILDING. AS A RESULT, THE BUILDING BECOMES A SPECTACLE OF ITS OWN, MORPHING TO
MAXIMIZE ENERGY ABSORPTION AND DISTRIBUTING IT THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING ON A 24 HOUR CYCLE.
PROJECT: MORPH WAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO NOT ONLY FOCUS ON ENERGY FOUND IN THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT, BUT IN SOCIAL AND CULTURAL
ENVIRONMENTS, THEREFORE DICTATING THE BUILDING AS THE EXHIBIT ITSELF. THE PROJECT RESIDES ON A RECREATIONAL PARK ALONG MEMORIAL DRIVE,
NORTH OF DOWNTOWN CALGARY. ITS LOCATION IS VITAL TO MORNING AND EVENING PASSAGE BETWEEN RESIDENTIAL AND OFFICE BUILDINGS, MAKING IT
HEAVILY ACTIVATED ONLY AT SPECIFIC POINTS OF THE DAY. THE INTENTION OF THE MUSEUM WAS TO ACTIVATE THE SITE ON A 24 HOUR BASIS AND EXIST SELF-
SUFFICIENTLY THROUGH SOLAR ENERGY. CURRENTLY, EVENING PROGRAMS IN CALGARY END EARLY AND ARE RELATIVELY SPARSE. THEREFORE WE PROPOSED TO PROVIDE A PLACE FOR VIEWING DURING THE DAY AS WELL AS EVENTS THAT
HAPPEN AFTER 6PM AND CONTINUE UNTIL 6AM.

A SERIES ENDING WHERE IT BEGAN, ESPECIALLY WHEN PERPETUALLY REPEATED | RE SUR-KUHLPROJECT: THE PRESENCE OF SUR-KUHL EXISTING WITHIN THE SCHOOL SITE OF LAKE
CHAPARRAL COMMENTS ON THE IDEA OF LAW EXISTING WITHIN LAW. ALTHOUGH LAKE CHAPARRAL IS A COMMUNITY WITHIN CALGARY, IT IS TOPOGRAPHICALLY SEGREGATED
FROM NEIGHBORING COMMUNITIES AND THE REST OF THE CITY. IN A SENSE, THIS PHYSICAL SEPARATION ALLOWS FOR THE COMMUNITY TO BECOME ITS OWN CITY; A CITY WITH ITS
OWN RULES AND LAW. SIMILAR TO A CELL, EACH PHYSICAL PART WITHIN IT HAS SPECIFC FUNCTIONS, BUT ARE DEPENDENT UPON THE WORKING FUNCTIONS OF THE OTHER
PARTS. IT IS ONLY WHEN THESE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PARTS ARE ESTABLISHED, CAN A CELL PERFORM. THIS PARALLELS WITH THE NEW COMMUNITIES DEVELOPING IN THE
CALGARY AREA, WHERE THEY ARE A PART OF CALGARY, BUT REMAIN CONTAINED WITHIN THEMSELVES. THE COMMUNITY BEGINS TO FUNCTION ON ITS OWN, GENERATING ITS OWN SET OF RULES AND REGULATIONS. THIS IDEA BECOMES APPLIED TO THE LOGIC THAT WAS
DEPLOYED IN UNDERSTANDING SUR-KUHL WITHIN LAKE CHAPARRAL.
CONCEPT: A RIGOROUS SET OF RULES WAS REQUIRED TO GENERATE A FORM THAT COULD CREATE ITS OWN LAWS WITHIN A LARGER SET OF LAWS. THE ITERATIVE SYSTEM OF CIRCLE PACKING BECAME THE FOUNDATION FOR THE COURT OF LAW TO BEGIN TO MANIFEST. SIMILAR TO LAKE CHAPARRAL DECLARING ITS OWN JUDGMENT AND LAWS, PARTICULAR RULES AND LOGICS WERE DEPLOYED TO THE CIRCLE PACKING
ITERATIONS TO BEGIN UNDERSTANDING SPACE AND PROGRAM. THIS WAS NOT A TOP DOWN PROCESS, BUT A RESPONSIVE PROCESS WHERE THE PROBLEM PRODUCED A CONSEQUENCE, WHICH THEN INFORMED AND REFORMED THE PROBLEM INTO A NEW PROBLEM, AND A RE-APPLICATION OF RULES PRODUCED A NEW CONSEQUENCE, AND SO ON AND SO FORTH. CONGRUENT TO AN ORGANISM, ITS FUNCTION IS
NOT A LINEAR PATH, BUT A CONTINUOUS LOOPING PROCESS. THIS LOOPING ACTION ENABLED THE FORM TO CONTINUE TO MORPH AND BE SHAPED BY RELATIONSHIPS RATHER THAN BEING STATIC AND FIXED WITHIN A NETWORK. TO AVOID ARBITRARY RULES, PROGRAM AND SCALE GREATLY INFLUENCED THE DESIGN DECISIONS MADE BETWEEN EACH PROBLEM, CONSEQUENCE LOOP AND FASHION DESIGN THAT EVOLVED IN THE PREVIOUS STUDIO ASSIGNMENT. AS A RESULT, SUR-KUHL IS ONE OF MANY POSSIBLE ITERATIONS THAT COULD BE GENERATED FROM
THE SET OF RULES APPLIED TO CIRCLE PACKING. HOWEVER, BECAUSE OF PROGRAM AND THE SITE THAT SUR-KUHL INHABITS, IT BECOMES A FORM THAT IS SPECIFIC TO LAKE CHAPARRAL, MAKING IT A COURT OF LAW THAT REPRESENTS LAWS APPARENT IN LAKE CHAPARRAL, WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT RUN PARALLEL TO OTHER COMMUNITIES OF CALGARY, THEREFORE, A COURT OF LAW EXISTS BESIDE YET APART FROM LAW.

AUGMENTING SOCIAL EXCHANGEDESIGN STRATEGY 1: URBAN OBJECTS
PROJECT: THIS PROJECT IS AN EXPLORATION ON THE SYNTHESIS OF SOCIAL EXCHANGE OCCURRING AT THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS WITHIN DOWNTOWN CALGARY. AT PRESENT, SOCIAL PROGRAMS EXIST
AS SEPARATED CLUSTERS WITHIN DOWNTOWN CALGARY, THEREFORE SEGREGATING SPECIFIC STREETS OR AREAS FROM EACH OTHER. THE LACK OF A MULTI-PROGRAM PURPOSED SPACE FOR THE
CO-HABITANCE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF SOCIAL GROUPS IS THE REASON FOR THE LACK OF A UNIFIED DOWNTOWN CALGARY IDENTITY. ANOTHER CHARACTERISTIC OF DOWNTOWN CALGARY IS THE PLUS 15
SYSTEM. ITS FUNCTION IS PRACTICAL FOR HEAT SUPPORTED CIRCULATION SYSTEM THROUGHOUT A MAJORITY OF THE BUILDINGS. HOWEVER ITS PRESENCE CONTRIBUTES TO THE SEGREGATED SECTORS
IN ELEVATION. THE SECOND FLOOR OF EACH BUILDING CONNECTED TO THE PLUS 15 SYSTEM HAS BECOME AN AREA FOR QUICK ACCESS PROGRAMS, THUS BREAKING DOWN A MAJORITY OF BUILDINGS
INTO THREE MAIN TYPES: COMMERCIAL, OFFICE, AND RESIDENTIAL.THUS, MY INTENTION WAS TO CREATE AN ARCHITECTURE THAT COULD SYNTHESIZE DIFFERENT PROGRAM ELEMENTS INTO A
SINGLE SPACE TO ALLOW FOR A DIVERSITY OF PROGRAMS, WHICH INEVITABLY CREATES A NEW TYPE OF SPATIAL SHARING AND SOCIAL MIXING.
CONCEPT: SOCIAL EXCHANGE WAS MEASURED AT THREE DIFFERENT SCALES: HUMAN, PROGRAM, AND SECTIONAL SPACE. EXTENSIVE MAPPING WAS DONE TO UNDERSTAND: A) WHICH OBJECTS WERE PRESENT IN DOWNTOWN CALGARY THAT
ENCOURAGED EXCHANGE BETWEEN HUMAN AND URBAN OBJECTS; B) PROGRAMMATIC ELEMENTS THAT STIMULATED HUMAN EXCHANGE AND THE FREQUENCY TO WHICH THESE ELEMENTS EXISTED IN SPECIFIC PROGRAMS; AND C) HOW PARTICULAR
CONFIGURATIONS AFFECTED THE WAY SPACE COULD AFFECT THEY WAY PEOPLE INTERACTED WITH EACH OTHER AND THE ARCHITECTURE. ANOTHER SERIES OF MAPPING WAS REQUIRED TO LOCATE AN APPROPRIATE SITE THAT WOULD HAVE THE MOST IMPACT BASED ON THE CURRENT AMENITIES AND POPULATION DENSITIES. THE SITE CHOSEN WOULD EXIST IN
A CURRENT VOID OF AMENITIES BUT HAVE A HIGH DENSITY OF PEOPLE DURING THE DAY AND NIGHT. A THIRD SERIES OF MAPPING EMERGED TO UNDERSTAND POPULATION DENSITY, BUILDING HEIGHTS AND VIEWS, TRANSIT CONNECTIONS, PLUS

THE MARC BOUTIN ARCHITECTURAL COLLABORATIVE (MBAC) | WORKTHE WORK COMPLETED FOR MARC BOUTIN WAS FOR THE TRAVELLING EXHIBITION OF THE ROADSHOW, ARCHITECTURAL LANDSCAPES OF CANADA.
IT WAS AN EXTENSIVE PROJECT THAT COMPARED CANADIAN ARCHITECTURE AND THEMES THAT WERE RELEVANT IN THE 1950’S, PRESENT DAY, AND PROJECTED INTO THE FUTURE. CASES FOR EACH OF THE EIGHT SELECTED PROJECTS, GALLERY SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS, AND A LARGE
