Dynamic Catholic, Alive! Self-Denial & Sacrifice
One of the most beneficial sources of inspiration in our Catho-lic faith is the lives of the saints. The saints, like Christ, offer us a vast number of ways in which we can deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow the Lord. The penances that saints have taken on through the centuries are excellent models for us and give us ideas for denying ourselves and thus surrendering our lives to Christ. Extra prayer, fasting, sleeping on the ground, waking up in the middle of the night to pray, abstaining from alcohol, etc. are just a few of the many actions we can take to grow closer to Christ. What is essential to remember is that these practices must not become a source of pride for us. We must focus on how the actions draw us closer to Christ and al-low us to participate in His divine life. We must remember that God must be the source and goal of all of our thoughts, words, and actions. He is worth the sacrifices that we make.

The Saturday evening Vigil Mass time will change from 5:15pm to 4:30pm beginning next Saturday, September 9.
Archbishop Carlson has asked all the parishes within the Archdiocese of St. Louis to have a
second collection for all those who have been impacted by Hur-ricane Harvey. The weekend of September 9 & 10 we will have that second collection at all our weekend Masses. Funds raised will go directly to Catholic relief efforts via Catholic Charities of St. Louis. If you would like to assist in these ef-forts, please make your check payable to St. Joseph Church and note “Hurricane Harvey 2017” on the memo line. We will forward the funds to Catholic Charities of St. Louis. Donations can also be made through Catholic Charities website at www.ccstl.org/get-involved/donate and select the Hurricane Harvey 2017 fund. I want to thank all of you who remembered me with produce from your gardens this summer. There is nothing like vegetables from the garden. I really enjoyed it. We are still getting in bills from the Picnic. We will get to you the total amount made as soon as we can. Let us pray for each other this week. Father Bob Samson

Stewardship Awareness “What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” Matthew 16:26 St. Francis of Assisi once said, “Remember, you are what you are in the eyes of God, and nothing else.” We often forget this stewardship wisdom when we spend all of our time, talent and treasure to gain more of the world’s riches. We need to set our priorities based on God’s values and not the values of the material world.

Due to the small size of our parish, it is asked that each parish-ioner work their scheduled shift on the day of the Fall Festival to make it a success for our parish family. If for some reason you cannot work, please contact Diane Mee immediately at (636) 357-7606 and consider helping with set-up the day before and/or clean-up the day after our Fall Festival.

Food: 4 pies & any items for the Country Store Kitchen: 1 dish towel Variety Stand: 5 new items or home goods. These can be items to be used within your home. Quilt Stand: 1 matching bath towel and wash cloth set Grab Bag: 10 new $0.50 items each in a brown paper bag marked girl, boy, teen, or toddler. DO NOT STAPLE. NO CANDY, GUM OR FOOD OF ANY SORTS. NO SCHOOL SUPPLIES. NO RESTAURANT CHILD TOYS (HAPPY MEALS, ETC.) Toyland: Three $1 items and one $3 item Bottle Stand: $4 in an envelope marked “Bottle Stand” Please place all items in the bus shed in the appropriate bins or tables by Wed., Sep. 20. *In lieu of buying your donated items for each stand, you may make your donation for the Variety & Quilt Stand in the amount of $20 and/or your donation for the Grab Bag, Toyland, and Bottle Stand in the amount of $20 by placing it in the col-lection basket or taking it to the parish office by Wed., Sep. 20.
Parish School of Religion (PSR) - PSR will begin this Wed., Sep. 6 with a Mass for PSR students and their families begin-ning at 6:15pm in the Church. Any students in grades K-8 who attend a public grade school need to enroll in our PSR Program. Call 636-332-6676 to register. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) - If you or someone you know is interested in becoming Catholic or being confirmed in the Catholic faith, or if you are a cradle Catholic and want to learn more about the Catholic faith, please contact Deacon David Billing at [email protected] or call the parish office at 636-332-6676 to join in our RCIA Program. Sacrament of Confirmation will be conferred by Archbishop Robert Carlson on May 9, 2018 at 7pm for all 7th & 8th grade students. A parent/student meeting is set for Wed., Sep. 27 at 7pm in the cafeteria. All students will be required to attend this and the Spirit Alive Youth Conference on Oct. 6 & 7. Middle School Trivia Night - St. Joseph's 8th grade students would like to invite all students in grades 6-8 to their annual trivia night on Fri., Sep. 8 to raise money for their Pro-Life trip to Washington DC. The cost is $10 per student and includes light snacks. Doors open at 6:30pm, trivia is 7-9:30pm. Walk-ins are welcome and a team is not necessary to sign up, but if you do have a team, please email your team name and 5-8 team members’ names by Thu., Sep. 7 to [email protected]. Spirit Alive Youth Conference -Registration is open for the 6th Annual Spirit Alive Youth Conference held at our parish on October 6th & 7th. This high-energy weekend will challenge teens to go deeper in their faith. Open to students ages 12-18. Register at stjojo.net/youthconference.html. Tae-Kwon-Do - St. Joseph Tae-Kwon-Do will be starting their 18th year beginning Sep. 5. Classes are every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30-5:30pm in the school cafeteria and open to all ages. Knight of the Quarter - Congratulations to Ted Gregory who was voted “Knight of the Quarter” by the St. Joseph Knights of Columbus! Donut Sunday is next Sun., Sep. 10. St. Joseph 5th Annual Craft Fair - Nov. 4, 2017 Homemade craft vendors are needed! Cost of $50 includes 8’ x 4’ area, table and two chairs. Only 45 spots available. If there are open spots after Oct 10, direct sale vendors with inventory will be accepted. Vendors will be asked for a product donation with a value of at least $15 to be donated on the day of the event for a raffle. Email [email protected] to request an application.
