Donruss Americana Trading Cards – James Dean

Donruss Americana is a celebrity themed trading card brand which, as of 2009, had five releases. Each trading card featured a current or past celebrity with a short bio on the back of the card. I personally have written the copy for over 200 trading cards and was the head writer for the Studio Americana 2009 set.

Donruss Americana Trading Cards – Steve McQueen

Donruss Americana was carried nationally by hobby and retail stores, including Target, Wal*Mart and Toys ‘R’ Us. It received national attention on Fox News and CNN for including current newsmakers at the time of printing, like Mike Huckabee and Michael Phelps in the set.

Donruss Americana Trading Cards – Jimmy Stewart

My aim in writing each of the celebrity bios was to provide a little bit of information about the celebrity that I found interesting . I also like to evoke emotion with my writing, as you can see in the copy for Jimmy Stewart . This card is unique in that it features a swatch of fabric from Stewart’s outfit.

Donruss Americana Trading Cards - Wayne Newton

I like to inject myself into my writing so that it reflects my passions and creativity, resulting in a unique finished product. As you can see with Wayne Newton’s card, I am a big James Bond fan so I focused on his supporting role in Licence to Kill (sic) as the basis for his card. Newton loved it!

Donruss Americana Trading Cards - Kathie Lee Gifford

Some of the challenges I’ve had to overcome in writing were to effectively capture my audience’s attention. Americana was targeted at males, ages 25 to 35, making Kathie Lee Gifford a tough sell. I included Gifford’s appearance on a popular episode of The Simpsons to help increase her appeal to the key demographic. My motto was to write every card as if the subject was on the A-list.

Donruss Americana Trading Cards - Press Release, Val Kilmer

In addition to writing copy for the actual product, I was also heavily involved in the marketing aspects as well. I wrote press releases and current, up-to-date news stories like this one about Val Kilmer (who is featured in Americana) taking a high profile role in the much hyped Knight Rider series. These stories were hosted on the company website and distributed to news outlets.

UTA Campus Newspaper: The Shorthorn - Staff Column

For two semesters I wrote humorous articles as the staff columnist for UTA’s newspaper, The Shorthorn. This particular article about a recent debate on campus with adult film star Ron Jeremy proved to be my most popular in terms of the student response it received.

UTA Campus Newspaper: The Shorthorn - Staff Column

This is my favorite article that I wrote for The Shorthorn. I love to write about humor and personal experiences I’ve had. I like to believe that life must be worth retelling for it to have been worth living in the first place.

I wrote all of the press releases, banner ads and magazine copy for Score Entertainment’s Bleach Trading Card Game. These ads appeared in Shonen Jump Comics, Anime Insider, Scrye, Wizard and Diamond Previews magazines.

Score Entertainment’s 2008 Product Catalog

This page in the Score Entertainment 2008 Product Catalog outlines most of the marketing and copywriting tasks I performed at the company. In addition to my writing skills, I ran all facets of customer service for Score Entertainment and was heavily involved in their event promotions and management, with programs at San Diego Comic Con and the Super Bowl in 2009.
