This document describes the detailed installation process of how to physically connect a satellite modem
(Model 9602W) to an ATrack tracking device, along with the configurations involved for enabling data transfer
over Iridium satellite networks while GSM/3G data network is unavailable. With a non-terrestrial link backup
function, the ATrack device switches to satellite transmission from a dropped GSM/3G connection
automatically to keep an always online network. In areas of no GSM/3G coverage, the ATrack device instructs
the 9602W to send data across the inter-satellite links. These data then reaches the Iridium Gateway which
provides interconnection to the terrestrial data network and are finally delivered to your host server via a
Direct IP connection. Consult the Iridium service provider for more information on how to apply for the Direct
IP service. Please be advised that duplex communication is supported for this backup function. Please
contact Joubeh for the IP and Port for the communication from your server to Joubeh. As soon as GSM/3G is
restored, the ATrack device switches back to GSM/3G data transmission. This communication switching is not
default. Specific ATrack AT commands have to be applied in order for ATrack device to do the communication
switch. Please refer to the Sample Script section for a test startup.

In this installation guide, we will be using JouBeh 9620W and ATrack AT5. Both the 9602W and the AT5 are
connected to a 12 volt DC power supply. Prepare the following items before the installation:
1. 9602W SBD Iridium Transceiver * 1
2. SMA Threaded Iridium Antenna *1
3. Serial Cable (DB 15 Female Connector to DB9 Male Connector) *1

Use these instructions to set Iridium modem hardware configurations. It is required to communicate with
ATrack device. Please be advised that you may ask JouBeh Technologies to help you set hardware
configurations before sending devices to you when larger deployment quantity involved.
1. Remove screws and nuts from the 9602W SBD Transceiver
2. Adjust the switch to the left position as shown in below lower-left corner and insert the jumper on pins 2
and 3 as shown in the lower-right corner.
3. Follow these sequence diagrams to reassemble your device.

1: Delete satellite queued messages
U8 0
<Prefix> The prefix when sending report over satellite communication. String(2) @P
<Custom Report
Format>
When set, the report sent over satellite communication will be
changed to this format. For what fields are available, please see
table below. Note that the header fields are fixed and cannot be
changed.
String(100) ""
<Satellite Queue
Checking Interval>
The interval in minutes to check the queue in Iridium gateway.
Commands sent to the device over satellite is queued in the Iridium
gateway and requires the Iridium modem to check if there is a
queued message to be received. Note: Once this interval is set, it
will result in additional cost as each queue checking packet is
charged by Iridium service. When there is a report being sent, the

queue will also be checked so this interval timer will restart.
0: Disable queue checking
Example
Device wait for 10 minutes of no GSM/3G network, then enter into satellite communication mode:
AT$SATC=1,10
# Enable Iridium satellite communication mode. Switch to satellite communication after 5 minutes when GSM/3G is unavailable.
Transfer all queued messages generated in satellite mode via GSM/3G once the communication is switched back to GSM/3G. Keep
prefix original setting and customize report format to only RTC date time, longitude, latitude, and report ID.

Note that <Destination> in TRAC, TRAX, and RACT do not have any changes. Once <Destination> is set to
GPRS and AT$SATC is enabled, reports will be sent via Iridium satellite automatically after the <Debounce>
time is reached. A more practical way to implement this is by setting different interval or disabling TRAC/TRAX
when switching to Iridium satellite communication. Below is a complete sample script to change the tracking
interval when switching to Iridium satellite communication:

Note that a line starting with # sign is considered as comment in ATrack device. You can copy/paste all
commands to the terminal during the setting. Save it to a text file and make any necessary changes if needed.
Once all is set, follow the next section to connect the ATrack device with JouBeh Iridium Transceiver.

Since data will be delivered to your host server via a Direct IP connection, consult your Iridium service
provider for more information on how to apply for the Direct IP service. The data received on the server via
Iridium satellite communication will have a specific header. Refer to “Iridium Short Burst Data Service
