There’s a new silly dog here

named Weezer.

Boy, he is the ultimate teaser.

He chases the chickens, the birds,

and the cats

(And he may end up in our freezer).

He leaps over the highest wall

Although he himself is quite small.

He knows he’s special and, oh, so handsome

And he never comes back when we call.

He performs more than one awesome trick

And in motion, he is super quick,

And he toys with us as much as he can,

Knowing he is so clever and slick.

He could easily pass the FCAT test;

His scores would rate the very best.

Such a whirlwind of energy ‘til he’s worn out

And he finally lays down to rest!

There’s also a new dog named Opie,

He’s fun-loving, goofy, and dopey.

He was found on the road all by himself

Between Orlando and Okeechobee.

He was big-time sick so he went to the vet,

And was as sad as a canine could get.

His pelvis was broken, but now it is healed...

Still sore, but that’s not stopped him yet!

If he’s not a beagle, he’s surely a hound;

We’re just grateful that he was found.

When he barks, it’s more like a bay.

In spite of his soreness, he rarely lays down.

His best friend is Weezer -- a crazy pair.

If they’re quiet and sleepy, it’s very rare.

Discipline is applied unsuccessfully;

They’re so happy, they don’t have a care.

We have a new feline named Smoky

Who is anything but slow-pokey.

He was homeless and sick with no place to chill,

Now he thinks his new home’s okey-dokey!

If you touch his sore feet, he will holler.

They’ll be fixed if it costs our last dollar!

Much to Smoky’s relief, the problem was solved

With a regal Elizabethan collar.

He does not dream of wearing a crown,

Although he can sport a majestic frown

As he struts all around the cattery

Like he knows he’s top cat of the town!

So he now thinks he is an English king,

And wants a scepter and garnet ring.

Just kidding -- he’s a humble fellow,

Who is happy with most anything.

A New Plan for Journey’s End… Can You Help?

As part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the funds necessary to continue our mission, plans are being made to realize one of Florence’s longtime dreams: the establishment of an on-site art gallery containing works for sale that will benefit Journey’s End. This will entail erecting a small outbuilding near the entrance to our property. It is our hope that the gallery wil l be open before next year.

The gallery’s curator and “honorary artist-in-residence” will be Geoff Francis, who is a Journey’s End trustee (www.artistgeofffrancis.com). Geoff is an award-winning artist and photographer whose work has been shortlisted by Saatchi Art four times and personally selected by their chief curator. He is also a published writer, lyricist, and filmmaker. Geoff resides primarily in the United Kingdom, but makes visits to Journey’s End as he is able. Geoff has been involved in animal welfare causes for decades and has a special heart for Journey’s End.

In the 1980’s he established and ran Animaline, a campaigning organization in England, at the behest of the late Linda McCartney, actress Rita Tushingham, and British television writer Carla Lane. Geoff's dedication to animal causes has never wavered.

Geoff’s art will be featured in the gallery, as well as that of other artists. The gallery building is expected to cost approximately $5,000. If you would l ike to make a donation specifically toward this endeavor, simply indicate on your check (or a note for online donations) that this is your wish.

Heading into summer...

The first volunteer orientation had a great turnout. Our talented organizer Tara has a whole list of fun and productive tasks for new volunteers, most of which involve working directly with the animals. If you’d be interested in volunteering, check our facebook page for upcoming orientations and a sign-up form.

We’re putting the finishing touches on the memorial garden. It will be a beautiful place to honor the animals who have passed on but left us with precious memories.

And to be ready for whatever Mother Nature throws our way this summer, we’ve got our generator running smoothly again and are fine-tuning our evacuation plans and safety procedures.
