A strategic vision for forming highly-effective leaders for the Church.
Joyful Catholic Leaders
THE SEMINARIESOF SAINT PAUL
TWO SEMINARIES
SAINT JOHN VIANNEY COLLEGE SEMINARY
Established in 1968, Saint John Vianney College Seminary is currently one of the largest college seminaries in the United States with approximately 100 undergraduate men in formation each year. More than 500 alumni are serving as ordained priests today. Many more serve as joyful, Catholic, lay leaders who build up the Church throughout the world as husbands, fathers, businessmen, teachers, doctors, attorneys and faithful parishioners.
THE SAINT PAUL SEMINARY
Archbishop John Ireland founded The Saint Paul Seminary in 1894. Honoring his vision, the seminary has educated and formed more than 3,000 priests for the upper Midwest for more than a century.
In the past decade, this well-established institution has seen significant growth. More than 1,000 men and women are currently enrolled in various formation programs. Institutes for both lay and ordained have expanded. And the priestly formation program is widely recognized as a national model for comprehensive, integrated formation.

for joy.”

ONE VISION
OUR COMBINED FUTURE
Saint John Vianney College Seminary and The Saint Paul Seminary, known collectively as The Seminaries of Saint Paul, are uniquely positioned to take the next step forward to form joyful, Catholic leaders for the next generation.
In collaboration with the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis and the University of St. Thomas, The Seminaries of Saint Paul aspires to be a regional center of education and formation for seminarians, diaconate candidates, lay ministers, theologians, Catholic school leaders and clergy.
Now, more than ever, our Church and our world need joyful, Catholic leaders who will transform our parishes, schools and communities while radiating a deep, abiding joy that comes from knowing and serving Christ.
“God made us
for joy.”
ST. JOHN PAUL II
I am grateful for all that the seminaries do to build up the Body of Christ, and I ask that you would prayerfully consider
supporting their vital work.”

Strategic Funding Priorities
Enhancing College Seminary Formation$10 MILLION
Formation requirements have expanded tremendously in the past 20 years. Enhancing the current facilities of Saint John Vianney College Seminary will create an environment that meets the increased program needs for today’s college seminarians, supports the vibrant spiritual and community life of the seminary, and allows priestly discernment to flourish.
Establishing Leadership Formation Programs$20 MILLION
Our parishes, our schools and our communities thrive under the leadership of those who are committed to the faith and guide others with humility, kindness and courage. Three new institutes at The Saint Paul Seminary—for ongoing clergy formation, Catholic school leadership and diaconate formation —will prepare highly-effective leaders to build up the kingdom of God.
Preparing Joyful Priests for the Future$17 MILLION
Priestly formation is the heart of the seminary’s mission, preparing men to live holy lives of service. With the increasing cost of higher education, a more robust endowment at The Saint Paul Seminary will keep the cost of seminary education affordable and provide long-term, dependable resources to prepare good men to become great priests for generations to come.
$47 MILLION GOAL
Enhancing College Seminary FormationApproximately 100 undergraduate men come to Saint John Vianney College Seminary (SJV) every year to discern their vocation and to establish a foundation for a joyful priesthood. At SJV, they receive the necessary faith formation and directed self-discovery to follow God’s will in their lives.
Seminarians experience great joy and vitality at SJV. The seminary is more than a building. It is a home where they become well-rounded men of faith and learn to make a sincere gift of themselves to others. The environment where they pray, study and build community is an important part of their discernment process.
$10 MILLION GOAL
The current SJV building was constructed in 1982. Since then, there have been significant changes to the formation requirements and programming needs for college seminarians. Funds will be used to enhance the current facilities to meet the needs of today’s formation program and adequately support the spiritual and community life of the seminary. Enhancements will provide:
• An expanded chapel
• Priest residence rooms
• Guest rooms for visiting bishops and vocation directors
• Meeting space for spiritual direction
• Multipurpose room with kitchen for community meals
• Classroom for spiritual and human formation conferences
• Staff offices
IMPACT• An expanded chapel, which is the heart of the seminary, will better meet the daily liturgical needs of the
seminarians and help them see Jesus at work in their lives. With increased seating capacity, the chapel will accommodate the entire seminary community as well as provide a more welcoming and prayerful space for outreach events.
• On-site dining and kitchen facilities will provide more opportunities to strengthen the already robust sense of fraternity and community at SJV.
• Additional residential rooms will allow all priest staff to live on-site, enabling them to have the space they need for their own well-being and yet be fully immersed in the life of the seminary.
• Adequate meeting rooms will make regular spiritual direction possible for seminarians, helping them deepen their relationship with God and become more aware of His plan for them.
• More efficient use of the building will create much-needed space for staff offices and guest rooms for visiting priests and bishops.
Establishing Leadership Formation ProgramsThe Saint Paul Seminary forms highly-effective leaders—lay and ordained—to respond to the needs of our Church and our world. Three new programs have recently been developed to complement the seminary’s existing priestly formation and graduate degree programs:
• Institute for Ongoing Clergy Formation
• Institute for Catholic School Leadership
• Institute for Diaconate Formation
Like the core programs of the seminary, these institutes prepare, support and instruct Christian disciples who lead by example and serve as witnesses to the saving love of Jesus Christ. Their commitment to the faith and their dedication to servant leadership will transform our parishes, schools and communities.
$20 MILLION GOAL
Funds will be used to cover the first five years of operating costs for these institutes and to establish scholarships and dedicated endowment funds to sustain the programs into the future.
• Initial Operating Costs . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $5 Million Cumulative cost to cover the first five years of programming and operations for all three of the institutes.
• Endowed Fund for the Institute for Ongoing Clergy Formation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $5 Million Will provide scholarships for priests to participate in continued training and spiritual renewal programs.
• Endowed Fund for the Institute for Catholic School Leadership . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $5 Million Will provide scholarships for current and aspiring Catholic school principals and administrators.
• Endowed Fund for the Institute for Diaconate Formation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $5 Million Will provide scholarships for current and aspiring permanent deacons.
IMPACT Institute for Diaconate Formation
• Provides formation for candidates—married or single—to serve the Church as permanent deacons.
• Prepares permanent deacons to assist bishops and parish priests in carrying out the apostolic and evangelistic mission of Jesus Christ.
• Equips permanent deacons to proclaim the Gospel, provide sacramental preparation and counseling, minister to those in need, assist at Mass, and preside over baptisms, weddings, and funerals.
• Strengthens formation for active permanent deacons by providing ongoing education, fraternity and opportunities for spiritual renewal to support them in their ministry.
IMPACT Institute for Ongoing Clergy Formation
• Provides a systematic, comprehensive program for ordained clergy, empowering them to thrive as effective, ecclesial leaders.
• Facilitates ongoing formation for newly ordained priests, helping them transition into their roles with confidence.
• Equips newly appointed pastors with business skills needed to effectively manage a parish.
• Provides health and wellness resources, opportunities for retreats and spiritual renewal, and a place of fraternal support for all clergy so that they may joyfully live out their service to the Church.
IMPACT Institute for Catholic School Leadership
• Provides holistic and integrated formation for those entrusted with the administration of Catholic schools.
• Equips current and future school leaders with the knowledge and formation needed to transform schools into vibrant, faith-filled learning communities.
• Helps Catholic school leadership develop the necessary skills to run complex nonprofit institutions.
• Provides current and future pastors with the training they need to successfully fulfill their roles as ecclesial leaders of Catholic schools.
Preparing Joyful Priests for the Future Approximately 90 men come to The Saint Paul Seminary each year to answer God’s call to the priesthood. They desire to live holy lives of service to reveal the love of Jesus to our world. Their preparation guides them on their path to the priesthood and greater holiness. Upon completion of their studies and ordination, they return to their dioceses to serve God’s people with mercy, truth and compassion.
The cost of higher education—and the expanded scope and depth of priestly formation—require a significant amount of resources. The priestly formation program at The Saint Paul Seminary is made possible through:
• Tuition – A seminarian’s sending diocese or supporting organization (like the Catholic Services Appeal Foundation of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis) covers approximately half of the actual cost of a seminarian’s education and formation.
• Annual Fundraising – Support from generous benefactors has more than tripled in the past 12 years to help fund the rising cost of education.
• Endowment Resources – The seminary’s endowment currently covers approximately 16 percent of the cost of the priestly formation program, funding annual formation for 30 seminarians.
