Merry Christmas to my Holiday Traditionalists. It has

always been Merry Christmas and will continue.

We had a great November with our monthly breakfast at

Great American Buffet, our lunch cruise to Hickory

Bridge in Pennsylvania, and our board election at the

monthly meeting. (See results in meeting minutes.)

I have been tracking sign-ups for the December events,

i.e., Toys for Tots and the Christmas Party/Meeting. It

looks like great turnouts for both events – but, still

room for more. If you want to participate in Toys-for-

Tots, please let Steve Argubright know your desire,

[email protected], and you can let Marie Sizemore

know if you would like to sign-up for the Christmas Party

or renew your membership, [email protected]. We do

not want to leave anybody out from having a good time

during the holidays.

Club events will gear down for a couple of months, lim-

ited to the monthly breakfast and the meeting in Janu-

ary, and February always brings the Valentine Brunch.

Always a good dress up event to attend with your bride,

groom, or other. Watch your newsletter.

The membership is declining a bit. I can understand

members not renewing when they move hundreds of

miles away, but it’s the locals I don’t understand. I feel

that our club provides an avenue for friendship, partici-

pation in events together, breaking bread together, and

we all have a common interest, America’s favorite sports

car – The Corvette. What other club can offer that?

See you at the Christmas Party!

November 19, 2019, ACCC Business Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by President Al McCloud at 7:30PM. There were 16 attendees.

The October minutes were accepted without reading by unanimous vote. No one won the newsletter trivia

question.

Vice President. Joan Yaros commented that we had a good trip to Hickory Bridge farm this month. We also

had a great breakfast at Great American Buffet in Fredericksburg. ACCC joined Battlefield Corvette Club

for a Veteran’s Day salute at King George Walmart. She went through changes to the calendar of upcoming

events. We have 20 cars signed up for the Toys-4-Tots event in December. The Christmas Party will be on

Sunday, Dec. 8, at Bravo, Spotsylvania Towne Center, Fredericksburg. Thus far we have 28 paid attendees

and 32 signed up to attend. Please check the events section of the newsletter for all of the new details

from Joan.

Treasurer. Steve Argubright informed members of the latest income and expenditures. The treasury is in

good standing with no outstanding obligations. Steve renewed the ACCC post office box at a cost of $100.

Membership. Marie Sizemore reported that we now have 46 members who have paid to renew their member-

ship for 2020. The 2019 membership year ends on Nov. 30.

Newsletter. Pete Rutledge announced a new series of articles that will be appearing in the newsletter. It is

ACCC Driver/Owner Impressions of the various Corvette generations. The first article, which will appear in

the December issue is on the C4 generation and will be contributed to by Skip Sizemore, Dave Jones, and

Pete Rutledge.

Past President. Skip Sizemore told the members how C8 power will be automatically limited for the first 500

miles as part of the break-in process.

Sunshine. Nan Wehmeyer had nothing new to report (which is good news).

Old Business. Al talked about the results of the nominating committee. He passed out the proposed slate of

new officers. Changes include Skip Sizemore as Secretary and Dave Shadbar as past president. Other offi-

cers will be the same as in 2019. Bud Donner will remain the NCM Ambassador and Nan Wehmeyer will con-

tinue as Sunshine person. The proposed slate of officers was approved unanimously by the members in atten-

dance.

Al said that 6 ACCC cars joined BCC at King George Walmart for the Veteran’s Day salute.

Steve Argubright reminded the members of the Toys-4-Tots event; he has a list of people who have signed

up to participate, including a number of BCC members. Steve will be following up about the staging point at

Hilldrup Moving & Storage, 4022 Jeff Davic Highway, Stafford, VA; he will advise the membership with final

details.

Cut-off date for paying for the Christmas Party is Nov. 30.

New Business. Al mentioned the proposal to increase club dues by $5. A secret vote will be taken at the

Christmas Party. He added that if a member attends only the annual picnic and the Christmas Party, the dues

increase will be more than made up for.

Al announced the birthdays and anniversaries for August.

Skip Sizemore won the 50/50.

The meeting adjourned at 7:51PM.

AQUIA CREEK CORVETTE CLUB

The purpose of this organization shall be to provide educational needs for those with Corvettes, and

for the preservation, restoration, and enjoyment of all Corvettes.

NOW IN OUR 33rd YEAR

Aquia Creek Corvette Club (ACCC) was formed in September 1987 by a group of die-hard Corvette

enthusiasts from Aquia Harbor in Stafford, VA. The name was selected reflecting the Club's geo-

graphic and historical origins in the Old Dominion. Through hard work and commitment, ACCC has en-

joyed constant growth and now boasts 54 members representing nearly 70 Corvettes, from a 1953 to

2018. ACCC membership consists primarily of Stafford County residents, but has members from

Prince William, Fairfax, Fauquier, Spotsylvania, Orange, Culpeper, Loudon, Louisa counties, and two in

Florida. Since September 8th, 2014, the ACCC Facebook Group has been limited to ACCC members

only, except for a few that were already group members.

ACCCording to the Vice President

This will be our last Newsletter for 2019. Kudos to Pete

Rutledge for a year’s worth of great Newsletters!

Just a quick recap of our November events. On Novem-

ber 1st, thanks to Al and Margaret McCloud, several

Members enjoyed a beautiful impromptu cruise to Sky-

line Drive with lunch at Big Meadows Lodge and a stop at

Gray Ghost Winery on the way home. On November 3rd,

thanks to Bud and Louise Donner, we had a great day for

our annual lunch cruise to Hickory Bridge Farm in Orr-

tanna, PA Always a favorite event!

Next, we had a big group for our monthly breakfast on

November 9th at Great American Buffet in Fredericks-

burg. On November 11th, several ACCC Members joined

with BCC for a Veterans Day salute at the Wal-Mart

near Dahlgren in King George County.

To finish out November, I hope everyone has a safe and

Happy Thanksgiving with family and friends. I am thank-

ful to all of you for your friendship!

Heading into December, I am looking forward to kicking

off the Christmas holiday season with two upcoming

events. First, giving back to our community and those

less fortunate, ACCC’s annual Toys for Tots Cruise to

the Marine Corps Museum in December 7th. Once we

drop off our toys, we will enjoy lunch at noon at Tun Tav-

ern. Thanks to Steve Argubright for coordinating this

event.

Second, on December 8th at noon, it’s our opportunity to

gather and celebrate the season with friends, fun gifts

and great food. Our Christmas party is at Bravo, Spot-

sylvania Towne Center in Fredericksburg. Thanks to

Marie Sizemore and Nan Wehmeyer for planning and col-

lecting money for our party.

See additional details for both these events in the

Events Calendar and attached flyers.

2019 has been a good year with lots of events and gath-

erings. I am looking forward to 2020 and enjoying an-

We recently saw two reports on the last production C7 and guess what – they’re about two different

“last”cars! The first report, from Hagerty a couple of weeks ago, said it was a black Z06, sold (pre-

production) in a charity auction by Barrett-Jackson four months ago for 2.7 million dollars. The second,

as reported in the latest Museum E-Newsletter, said that the final production C7 was a white coupe

with a red interior, purchased by Museum Life Member and former Board member Ivan Schrodt and

donated by Ivan to the Museum, where it is now displayed in the Skydome. The Museum explained the

disparity – the last Corvette, finished at 3:10 PM on November 14, was indeed the black Z06. The

white coupe was second to last, but it was the last Stingray.

The Assembly Plant is remodeling the Front Entrance area to make it safer for the many visitors who

often stop in the road to take a photo. They plan to resume plant tours in the spring of next year

(maybe in time for the Bash in April??)

The last event at the Museum this year is “Twinkle at the Track”, a display of over 1 million lights along

two miles of the Motorsports track. The 25 holiday scenes will be there from the day after Thanksgiv-

ing thru New Year’s Day.

Coming in 2020 - the Daytona Rolex 24 NCM tour will be held from January 22-27, and the annual NCM

Bash is on April 23-25. It’s not too early to make your plans to attend these popular events.

Are you a fan of jambalaya, gumbo, and beignets? The NCM Plantation Tour is your kind of event. It

starts in Harahan, a suburb of New Orleans, on March 31 and runs thru April 4. The schedule includes

several plantation visits, a steamboat dinner cruise, and a swamp boat tour. Details at

ACCC Driver/Owner Impressions — C4 (The first in a new series of articles that, with ACCC member participation, will cover all Corvette generations.)

From Skip Sizemore:

I have owned two C4 Corvettes. A 1984 (first year

for the C4) and the current 1995. Overall the 95 is

the better Corvette but we need to remember the

84 was given the Motor Trend car of the year award.

For a Corvette and cars of that era the 84 was a

revelation, primarily because of its’ tremendous han-

dling. The C4 was the first production Corvette to

obtain 1.0g on the skid pad.

The things I like most about the C4 are the handling,

the seats, the centrally located gas filler, the hood

and the value.

The C4 has a 96inch wheelbase making its’ response

to a change in direction quick or snappy is another

way to say it. I like a car that seems to respond to

your thoughts and the handling of the C4 seems to

read my mind.

I find the seats in the C4 more supportive and com-

fortable over a longer period than the seats in our C5. Our C4 Corvette has about 40 thousand

more miles on it than our C5, but I have never had the seat rocking problem on the C4 that I

have had with the C5.

The gas filler is in the center rear on a C4. When I visit a gas station, that central location for

the gas tank filler always makes me smile. No need to remember if the filler on the right or

the left and search for a corresponding pump. Just pull up to any open pump and fill it up. No

problem.

C4 Corvettes have big hoods and when you open one you see that design was a great idea. You

not only get a good view of the engine but you see the wheels, tires, brakes and a good portion

of the front suspension. Other components visible include the radiator, battery, horns, head-

light assemblies and several other lessor components. I always like to think that a mechanic

having struggled to get at hidden components in a modern automobile had something to do with

the design of the C4 Corvette hood.

On the performance end of the car world the Corvette is a good value and no version of Cor-

vette better exemplifies that than C4 Corvette. Even with its advanced age you get a lot of

performance and looks for your money. Performance that can keep you in game with 90% of

Page 8: Joyous Scenes from Last Year’s ACCC and BCC Successful ... · 12/12/2019  · December 7 - Toys for Tots Cruise to Marine Corp Museum to deliver our donated toys. Lunch at Tun Tavern

ACCC Driver/Owner Impressions — C4 (cont’d)

the cars on the road today. Get a ZR1 version C4 and move up to 95%.

So, there you have some of the reasons I like a C4 Corvette. However, there are some things I

do not like about C4 Corvettes.

I do not like cheap materials used in some portions of the C4. The interior is my main concern

because of the cheap plastics and carpet. In addition to being subpar these items are expen-

sive to replace as is almost any part on a Corvette.

Poor body panel fit is my next area of concern. Panel alignment and fitment can be all over the

place compromising a good design.

The final two items on my list are square taillights and the getting in and out of a C4. Square

or round taillights are personnel preference and my preference is for round taillights. Chevro-

let wanted to distinguish the ZR1 version of the Corvette from the standard car and gave it

square taillights. After a time, the square taillights became standard on all C4s. Cost cutting?

My, last nit to pick is getting in and out of a C4. There is no graceful way to do it and if you are

in a tight parking place, entry and exit becomes a gymnastics exercise.

There you have it, what I like and what I do not like about the C4 Corvette. Despite my dis-

likes, I still believe a C4 is a great value in the performance world and a very good value in the

Corvette world.

From Dave Jones:

My experience with the C4 Generation Corvette is

based on the 1996 Collector Edition Coupe that I

have owned for about 3-½ years.

In the “like” category, I enjoy the way the car han-

dles in road conditions such as S-curves and winding

roads. The even weight distribution, 51%

front/49% rear, wide tires and a wide stance pro-

vide a stable platform. I had the pleasure of driving

the car on the Dominion Speedway 2-mile Road

Course in Thornburg, VA, and it handled the curves with ease. The car is very comfortable

when driven in a interstate highway type of situation, less so on rough roads, being somewhat

stiff. The digital electronics are welcome and set the precedence for Corvette generations to

follow, although I find the speedometer difficult to read under some situations. In the

”dislike” category I find it difficult to enter and exit, largely due to the configuration of the

dash protruding into the door opening space. While I enjoy the Targa top, I find it a bit bur-

densome to remove, which requires the removal of four bolts by a socket wrench that is

Page 9: Joyous Scenes from Last Year’s ACCC and BCC Successful ... · 12/12/2019  · December 7 - Toys for Tots Cruise to Marine Corp Museum to deliver our donated toys. Lunch at Tun Tavern

provided with the car. The steering is a bit stiff, but I enjoy that as it helps to avoid over-

steering situations. I like the styling of the car, being a significant change from the previous

C3 generation, and believe the body style helped to keep the Corvette a well-respected sports

car during the C4 years.

From Pete Rutledge:

I have had three C4s (’88, ’95, and now a ’91) and our

younger daughter had one (’84). We have enjoyed all

of them. All have been coupes with targa tops. Our

daughter’s was black with automatic transmission.

She and I learned a lot about fixing/restoring mod-

ern Corvettes from that car. And she had the fun of

driving it to her senior year of high school—it looked

good and sounded good and made quite as statement

as she pulled into or out of the high school parking

lot. The ’88 had a Z51 performance suspension and the “4+3” speed manual transmission, which

I didn’t especially like, but it was (mostly) a manual transmission, which is something I always

like. While it was technically red, it was a dark metallic red that almost looked brown—not so

good. The ’95 was an automatic, but it was Torch Red, which I love. My most recent C4 is the

’91. I found it because I was looking for a ’92 or older Corvette, which would be considered an

“antique” in Virginia. In addition to its age, it had a lot of features I liked: low mileage (only

38K), bright red, 6-speed manual ZF transmission, Z07 performance suspension, all red interior

with sport seats, and very nice original condition (including the original window sticker), and it

was pretty cheap to buy (C4s are some of the most affordable Corvettes on the market). ’91

was the first year of the C4’s final, more rounded front and rear end design (which I think was

a significant improvement over the previous design). It was the last year of the L98 engine,

which meant that most of the “bugs” had been worked out of it by ’91, although it has only

245hp. Had I held out for a ’92, it would have had the first-year LT1 engine with 300hp but an

ignition system that proved prone to failure and difficult to repair (as Skip knows well). I’m

glad I found the ’91. It is old enough to be an “antique,” but new enough to have most of the

modern conveniences of today’s Corvettes (although it does feel funny to actually have to in-

sert a key in the door lock in order to get into the car. And there is another factor that has

entered the picture for me as I’ve gotten older. When I was a lot younger, I could buy a rela-

tively newer car and look forward to the day when it would be an antique (I do like old cars).

But now, if I’m wanting a car to be an antique, I need to buy a car that is already an antique be-

cause I can no longer afford to wait 20 years for it to become an antique (because by that

time I will be too antique, myself, to enjoy or maybe even to drive the car). I like the fact

is already 28 years old, soon to be 29, and yet it still looks like a brand new car—it’s the best

of both worlds for me. Finally I have to mention the transmission again. When I was a teen, I

loved the sound of the big block Chevies (usually 396 Chevelle SS’s) with their heavy-duty

Muncie M22 4-speed transmissions. When they went down the street, the transmission whine

was so impressive and made the cars seem especially powerful. Well, I was surprised and

pleased to find that the ZF 6-speed in the ’91 has a great whine! I have since read that Euro-

pean transmissions (the ZF is made in Germany) typically have more whine than US transmis-

sions (possibly because of the gear tooth angle used). If you listen sometime as I pull away in

the ‘91 and shift up through the gears, you will know what I mean.

TOYS FOR TOTS

Dec. 7, 2019 — Please participate

Page 17 The ACCCelerator - Aquia Creek Corvette Club Newsletter - December 2019

Every Child Deserves a Little Christmas

Annually, the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program collects toys,

and distributes them to less fortunate children in the community. The primary

goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of

hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible,

productive, patriotic citizens.

This is our third annual year supporting this program!! Please bring a new, un-

wrapped toy or two at 11:00am on Saturday, December 7, to the Hilldrup Moving

and Storage Facility near the back gate of Quantico MCB, 4022 Jefferson Davis

Hwy, Stafford, VA 22554. From there we will proceed to the National Museum

of the Marine Corps, make our deliveries and have lunch at Tun Tavern.

If you are unable to join us, please bring your gifts to the Christmas Party on

Sunday, December 8, at Bravo Restaurant in Fredericksburg and we will ensure

delivery. The club point of contact is Steve Argubright at [email protected].

1983 was an anomaly in Corvette's 30-year history. The public and industry eagerly anticipated a special 30th anni-versary edition, but it was not to be. Corvette management had been aim-ing at a markedly revised model as early as the mid-70s, but a number of delays and obstacles intervened.

Actually, 43 pre-production models of the 1983 were built, but only one has endured and is on display at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green.

As a result of the holdup, the 1984 was able to meet all new federal safety, fuel economy, and emissions regulations and benefit from an unusually long production run when it was eventually introduced. Consequently, the 51,547 units manufactured represented the second greatest volume in the sports car's history.

Development of the fourth generation of Corvette dates back to 1978 and represents a collabora-tive effort between designers at the parent General Motors and engineers at the Corvette Division. The 1984 can trace its legacy, in part, to Bill Mitchell who had since left Corvette; to Dave McLellan, Corvette's new engineering chief, and to GM designer Jerry Palmer. They all agreed that a major redesign in virtually every aspect was warranted.

The result was a wider, smoother, aerodynamic body style; more spacious interior; lightweight chassis; integral stability, and even further weight reduction. It became the first, all-new Corvette since 1968's Mako Shark. Overall length was reduced by over eight inches, thanks to less front and rear overhang, although the wheelbase was chopped less than two inches. The fenders, in concert with the nose, sloped gently forward and down while the rear fascia had a modestly angu-lar concave design with the slightest hint of the '68's boattail.
