JP BULLYING AWARENESS WEEK The focus this week has been on making the children think about their actions towards one another. A variety of activities have happened both in and out of the classrooms. We have read stories and chatted about our support networks. The Grade 3s have initiated an activity that has caused great excitement. Origami hearts are left in lockers. If you find one in yours, you pass it on to someone else. The “kindness tree “has been given a new lease on life and is now wrapped in purple. On Tuesday the children wore a touch of purple. There were some very creative ideas. We had purple laces, purple socks, purple bows, purple badges and so forth. It was great to see their creativity. Obviously, this is an ongoing initiative that we will continue to address. VOLUME 03: 31 JANUARY 2020

The Grade 3s focussed on being kind and set kindness goals for the year. Here are some of their goals:

• My kindness goal is to be more trusting. When my friends lie, the next thing they say I don’t believe them, but I will try forgiving them and trust them again. (Beth)

• Our kindness goal is to help people when they drop something, or their hands are full. (Esme and Ben)

• My kindness goal is to be kind by being nice to friends when they don’t know the answers. (Lucca)

• My kindness goal is to be kind by being friendly. (Noah)

• My kindness goal is to help others by including them in games at break. (Ryder)

• My kindness goal is to make more friends by playing with different people. (Mae)

• My kindness goal is to listen to others and let others sit in my spot. (Zahra)

• My kindness goal is to be less bossy to people and only tell on others when it’s something serious. (Ava M)

• My kindness goal is to help others when they are hurt. (Tiago)

• My kindness goal is to help others with their work. (Adrian)

• My kindness goal is to be kind to my friends and people around me by helping them carrying things and help them when they are sad. (Olivia B)

• My kindness goal is to be less angry when I am not right. (Kai)

• My kindness goal is to not overreact with friends. (Talitha)

• My kindness goal is to work on not getting so agitated when I am wrong. (Christopher)

• My kindness goal is to help people find lost things. (Simon)

• My kindness goal is to help children find friends. (Mazi)

• My kindness goal is to be kind, caring and a helpful friend when other children are sad or lonely or just need a friend. (Anonymous)

• My kindness goal is to help other people if they are bullied. (Lee)

• My kindness goal is to make friends with kids who have no friends. (Micah)

• My kindness goal is to not get upset when my best friend wants to play with someone else. (Amber)

SP BULLYING AWARENESS WEEK # BE THE UPSTANDER In the Senior Primary we have had some great discussions and conversations around what it takes to be an UPSTANDER. EMPATHY, COURAGE, KINDNESS and INTEGRITY are all key factors. The children watched videos, roleplayed scenarios, discussed the reasons for bullying, and most importantly the steps to follow if you see bullying happening or are being targeted by a bully. We designed posters and shared ideas on how to react when we witnessed bullying behaviour. UPSTANDERS: 4 steps to take to stop the bully • Be a buddy • Interrupt the bullying • Speak out • Tell someone In Grade 7, the children discussed the Australian incident of bullying that went ‘viral’ in 2019 where a young boy retaliated after months of bullying. The interesting thing about this incident was the lack of involvement by the peers, who stood by enjoying the spectacle. Since the emphasis on bullying week has been on the ‘upstander’ this prompted useful discussion. We also watched and commented on an incident of bullying in a playground in Spain in 2019 where the mothers of the children who were doing the bullying ignored it. This incident also carried serious racial overtones, and once again provided useful impetus for discussions on being the ‘bystander’ or ‘upstander’. Bullying is not acceptable behaviour and we take educating our pupils around strategies to deal with bullies very seriously. Cyber-bullying is an ever-growing concern and an aspect that we will continue to engage in. Unfortunately, this often happens outside of school and is an area that is difficult for the school to monitor. Families need to have strict measures of control in place to protect their children online. For help and guidance with this, come along to the “Fortnite and other F words”, Presented by Pam Tudin on Thursday night.

NEWS FROM THE ART ROOM This week the Creative Caterpillar (along with his ‘touch of purple’ crown) was awarded to Jaime Saunders in Grade 2A. Jaime has been working with a quiet confidence during art lessons. Putting a lot of effort into his dream car design and showing willingness to go the extra mile to make sure his artwork reflects the best of his ability. Well done Jaime! Keep it up. The children have been creating an anti-bullying tree in art lessons! All the children have chosen to be an upstander this week by placing their handprint promise onto the bully awareness tree. When it is finished, the tree will be put up in the JP Knowledge Centre so keep your eyes open for it soon! Great fun with a positive message!

Grade R have been exploring feelings and emotions in art. They created their own colour monsters, filled with colours that they felt represented their emotions in a certain situation. I have been so impressed with their positive attitude and good behaviour during lessons and the amazing results they are already producing. They can all be very proud of themselves for making a great start to the year!

GRADE 00 BOYS

SPORTS NEWS INDOOR HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS Our Indoor Hockey Championship started last Monday with our Girls playing against Hendrik Louw and De Hoop. Both teams played very well for their first matches of the season and recorded the following results: Grade 6 Girls vs Hendrik Louw Won 5 - 0 Grade 7 Girls vs Hendrik Louw Won 2 - 1 Grade 6 Girls vs De Hoop Lost 5 - 1 Grade 7 Girls vs De Hoop Drew 3 - 3 Special congratulations to our Grade 7 team who were 3-0 down to De Hoop at half time and fought back to draw the match 3-3. Your fighting spirit and teamwork was amazing, and we are very proud of all of you. We look forward to our next round of matches on Monday afternoon against Beaumont and SWPS. It was an exciting start to the 2020 Indoor Hockey season for the Boys. For many of our Grade 6 Boys, this was their first experience. They started their first game a little cautiously, however they soon realised that they could use the side-lines (boards) to their advantage and starting to score with greater ease. Unfortunately, they lost both games narrowly: 1-0 to Hendrik Louw and also by 1 goal to De Hoop 3-2. The Grade 7 Boys on the other hand took the fight straight to the opposition scoring first in both their games. Their games were tight and equally poised, but we could just not find the winner. A solid start by the boys to draw 3-3 with Hendrik Louw and 3-3 with De Hoop. There were moments of great passing hockey and teamwork. Goals were shared by most strikers and middlemen. Next week promises to be even more exciting with the Grade 6 Boys playing two matches at 15:00 against Beaumont and 15:50 against SWPS. The Grade 7 Boys only have 1 match at 15:25 against Beaumont. Thank you to all our parents for the wonderful support. See you again soon. ZONAL ATHLETICS TRIALS A number of our athletes have been hard at work during the holidays and the first few weeks of the term in preparation for the Helderberg Zonal Athletics Trials. Thirty of our athletes have qualified for the zonal trials which take place at Hottentots Holland High School next Friday & Saturday. We wish them all the very best of luck as they prepare for their trials.

MINI CRICKET SCORING: Welcome to an exciting 2020 for our new and experienced Mini-Cricketers. We played our first games of the season and the excitement amongst the players and parents was amazing to see. Just a quick note on how the scoring for Mini-Cricket works.

• Batting Each player will get a chance to face 6 balls, irrespective of how many times they get out. Each loss of wicket is -2 runs. There is a maximum of 4 runs per ball. To work out how many runs your team makes, you subtract the total wickets from the amount of runs the team got. e.g. Somerset House scored 40 runs and lost 3 wickets, their score will be (40 – 6 = 34 runs).

• Bowling Each player will bowl maximum 6 balls. For every wide they bowl it will add 1 or 2 runs, depending on the agreement between coaches. For each wicket they get its -2 runs. To work out the runs the team conceded you take the amount of wickets and subtract it from the total of runs conceded. e.g. Somerset House conceded 40 runs and took 3 wickets, the total will be (40 – 6 = 34).
