Planning History: cumulative index vol. 10 no. 1 (1988) - vol. 20 no. 3 (1998)

Introduction

Information scientists would say that, no matter how good the content of a journal, it is useless unless it can be retrieved at will. Normally this mea.ns some form of annual or cumulative index. The newsletter of the former Plannmg History Group, the Planning History Bulletin, was indexed by D~nnis Hardy in 1988 (vol. 10 no. 1). A decade later, the society has developed mto the International Planning History Society with a membership in exce.ss of ~00; the Bulletin has expanded and been reconstituted at the journal Plannmg l l1slo~y; a decade has passed and it seems appropriate to celebrate 20 years of pla~nmg history publications with a second decadal index. This is more appropnate ~s we enter the third decade making gradual changes to the journal; slowly mcreasmg the number of pages, introducing a refereeing procedure for the majority of papers, carrying somewhat longer papers, and now publ.icatio~ reviews; ~11 to complement the range of activities of the Society and of Its alhed academic refereed journal, Planning Perspectives. Nevertheless, IPHS Council still s~e~ ~n important function of Planning History as carrying ephemera: news of activities of the Society and of its affiliates; commentaries on publications, conference reports and so on. This will continue; but, by their very nature, such items are not recorded in this index of the more substantive contents of the journal. Here, only main papers and significant research notes are included.

This index is arranged in three main sections. Part 1 lists the main contents of each issue. Part 2 is an a lphabetical lis ting of authors. Part 3 is a simple key word index, allowing major topics, people and places to be sought. This multiple index should make the journal's contents much more accessible to all users.

In pursuit of these aims its interests are worldwide; welcomes members from both academic discip lines and the p rofessions o f the buil t environment. Membership of the Society is both mul ti-disciplinary and practice-oriented; encourages and gives s upport to networks, w hich may be interest-based, region- or nation-based, wo rking in the field s of planning his tory; provides services for members: publishing a journal, promoting conferences, and provid ing an international framework for info rmal individual member contact; invites national organisations, whose work is relevant to IPHS, to affil ia te s tatus; adminis ters its affai rs through an elected Council and Management Board.

The Society was inaugurated in January 1993 as a successor body to the Planning History Society, founded in 1974. Its membership is d rawn from several discipl ines: planning, architecture, economic and social history, geography, sociology, politics and related fie lds.
