Certain transitive verbs are derived from their intransitive counterparts (and vice versa).
It is commonly believed that break (intr.) is derived from break (tr.) (zero derivation).

ケンがハンカチを落 ( お ) とした。 (transitive) ハンカチが落 ( お ) ちた。 (intransitive)

ジャケットが釘 ( くぎ ) に引 ( ひ ) っかかった。 (intransitive)
Rough generalizations
A verb of the form X-ar-u is intranstive; X-e-ru (with the same base) is transitive.
A verb of the form X-re-ru is intranstive. A verb of the form X-s-u is transitive.

Affixes like -re, -s, etc. are not productive, although probably they used to be (more) productive; they are fossilized.
Similarly, - さ is more productive than - み– 甘さ vs. 甘み– うまさ vs. うまみ– あたたかさ vs. あたたかみ– 安さ vs. * 安み– 長さ vs. * 長み
Derivational affixes differ in their productivity/predictability
