M1l t Jackson, also known as " Bags", has been a leading performer of jazz vibes for over two decades. Th is month he' II be performing in th e Statl er's Downtown Room , and if you can make it down you' II be in for some great music.

Jackson is perhap s best known for hi s work as a member of the Modern Jazz Quartet. He was with the MJQ for twenty - two years until th e group di sbanded in late 1974 . He has, however, prol1ficly recorded as a leader . Many of h is older albums are sti II avai !abl e on Atlanti c and Impul se. Just two months ago Milt's Quartet r ecording from Montreux '75 was rel eased on Pabl o.

Bags has been attracting large crowds at his many club and concert appearances throughout the country . His speed, dexterity, lyri c ism and natural ability to swing are just a few r easons why . Also - he's a grea t bluesman .

Judging from Mi!t's appearance, andtheonescom ing up, I'd say that the Statl er is broadening their Jazz po licy . December. E.R. came back for two weeks following Phase Tu, a band made up of E.C.C. students. If anyone is still unfamiliar with Eri cson, it's the old Royal Arms on W. Uti ca between Linwood & Main . A Buffalo jazz landmark. Check it out .

We wel come back the Edelweiss Hutte (the BJR' s first advert1ser) who had Jaman in November & Buffalo Jazz Ensembl e guitarist Jame s Clark's group in December. It is loca ted at the entrance to Gl enwood Acres ski area in Gl enwood , N .Y.

Th e New Wave continu es t o draw enormous c rowds at Papagayo- in the All entown Mall onE lmwood. They appear fi ve night s a week with the group's pianist, Tom Sapienza, leading a trio with guests on Monday nights .

JAMAN & BIRTHRIGHT Two of Buffalo's best jazz groups delivered great

Due to the I arge number of requests we have r eceived, the BJR wi II pub I ish a I ist of the fifteen best records of '75 in the February issue . Our record reviewers wi II vote from the a I bums revi ewed throughout I ast year.

POLICY As stated in our first issue , it i s BJR poli cy to

review only the best albums we hear each month . Space in this publi cation is limited and we see no reason to waste it on something bad if we can use it for something good! From there, we try our best to describe the recording in such a way that everyone will understand what we're talking about. Your comments are welcome .

BUSTER WILLIAMS - PINNACLE - MUSE 5080 After years as a sideman with Herbi e Han cock,

Mil es Davis, Th .~ Crusaders and others, Buster Will tams has finally made his recording debut as a leader . Pinnac l e is a no: ewo rthy example of ht s vir tuostty as a ba ss ist, and a crea\ive composer, with the ability to front a group of outstandtng mustc ians . The musi c is similar in context t o that of Hancock's Mwandishi period, with the additi on of some we l l executed vocal work on a f ew tunes . Woody Shaw is hea rd only on two tun es but shouldn't be mi ssr>d. Sonny Fortune i s hea r d throughout. Don ' t overlook thisone! P .G

A very mellow pack agL• comes from WES MONT GOMERY Idl ed PRETTY BLUE (47030) Record on0 places Wes with an orches tra arranged and conducted by Jimmy Jones, whil e r ecord two tS a guitar, or·gan, drums format . Many of the tun es wer e pop tunes of th e time ('59-'63 ) and all are lt ght, pl ayed at s low t empos. Musi c to r elax with . Wes, of course , is always good . Th r· se records were prev tous ly issued as Fus1 on (Riv 472 ), Wes M ontgomery Trio (Riv 310) and van ous other s (stde 4).

What might be t erm ed a Rtvers ide anthol ogy has been issued for the late piantst BOBBY TIMMONS. MOANIN (47031) features Bobby in six t r io and one quartet setting and the musi c i s taken from six of his Ri verside albums Circa 1960-' 63. Thi s is some very fine musi c from Timmons, best known asapiantst for Art Blakey 's Jazz M essengers, and as th e composer of M oam'rJ- a jazz classic. Hi s style is pure funk and blues.

CLARK TERRY is in the company of some giants on CRUISING (47032). This one's t aken from four Riverside discs going back t o '57 -' 59 . Side one is a quintet w ith Johnny Griffin and Wynton Kelly . Next is a septet session with Johnny Hodges and Paul Gonslaves (fellow Ellingtoni a's). The four tunes are Elltngton standards. Side 3 is a quartet with Monk, Sam Jones & Philly Joe Jones. The last set is quintet with Don Butterfi eld on tuba. This is a superb package of musi c with an interesting vari ety of personnel .

All four of these albums r etail at $7.98 . All are worth your attention, espec iall y that Cannonball . B.W .

ROY ELDRIDGE - HAPPY TIME - PABLO 2310-746 Roy plays trumpet and sings on each track here

and the result is indeed happy music . His phrasing is the same whether he blows or vocalizes - a trait often found in singing trumpeters . A good variety of tunes is offered, to name a few- Willow Weep For Me, Makin Whoopie, I Want a Little Girl & All of Me . The addition of such extremely competent musicians as Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass, Ray Brown & Eddi e Locke only makes the party better . B .W.

SONNY STITT & THE GIANTS - NIGHT WORK -BLACK LION 307

More good jazz from Sonny Stitt . He's paired with trumpeter Howard McGhee on three of the si x tracks . Satin Doll is played only by the rhythm secti on of Walter Bishop, Jr ., Tommy Potter & Kenny Clark e. The best musi c is f ound in the two extended, hard blowing blues tracks on side one. Lover Man is sheer beauty; a showcase for the alto player who i s indeed in top f orm . Sonny isone ofthe most r eco rded jazzmen and h1s average of good r ecords, suchasthis, is hi gh. Night Work was done in 1967. B .W.

PATRICE RUSHEN - BEFORE THE DAWN- PRESTIGE 10098

The debut album from Patri ce , Prelusion (P -10089), was one of the best surprises of 1975. Out of nowher e surfaces a 19 year old pianist with an album of her own tunes. As good a set of Main stream as you'd want with players the I ikes of Joe Hender son. Dawn is more I ike what you ' d expect from the young lady . Its funky but i~s not disco music . Again, all the tunes belong to her. The musicians on hand include Hubert Laws, Oscar Brashear & Harvey Mason . Josi e James sings on one tune. A high I ight is the spacy titl e track . Laws sounds better on Jubilation than on his own r ecent disc . In all- a change indirection, but well done.

KENNY BURRELL - ELLINGTON IS FOREVER -FANTASY 79005

Kenny Burrell was one of the Duke ' s favorite guitarists to perform and record with. In this doubl e album you'll see why as Kenny plays with some of the most sought after musicians in jazz (Jimmy Smith, Joe Henderson, Thad Jones, Snooky Young, Jerome Ri chardson) producing a tasteful tribute to th e musi c of E II ington. There are moments that sound big band like as well as small ensemble settings. Burrell's guitar is fluid and profound and is well highl ighted by the impressive cast of accompanists . Ellington is Forever is good listening all the way around. J .H.

THE LOUIS BELLSON EXPLOSION- PABL02310755 Bellson presents an impressive big band herewith

some heavily talented players . Some of the better known members are Blue Mitchell, Snooky Young & Cat Anderson- all trumpet players . However, it's th e sax work of Buffalo's Don Menza & Pete Christli eb that interests rpe the most. Menza's groove blues is, in fact, one of the best cuts with the sax section offering a solo of their own in unison . While "Explosion" may be overdoing it as a description, it is good driving music . B .W.

BETHLEHEM IS BACK The first three re-issues of the Bethlehem cata

logue are now available . The finest of Nina Simone/"! Loves You Porgy"

(6003) finds Nina playing all of her own piano, with bassist Jimmy Bond & Tootie Heath. She only sings 7 of the 11 tunes, the others showcasing her piano work . This is simply beautiful music .

More vocal jazz comes with the Finest of Chris Connor (2-1001) - a two record set . There are many bright moments here, such as All About Ronnie & Lush Life. She's backed by the Vinnie Burke Quartet, Ellis Larkins' Trio, or Ralph Sharon's Group which includes such notables as Joe Puma andJ. J . Johnson .

The Complete George Gershwin Porgy & Bess (3BP-1) comes as a boxed, three record set . Featured are Mel Torme, Frances Faye, Johnny Hartman & Frank Rosolino. Music is bytheDukeEIIington& Russ Garcia Orchestras, the Stan Levy Group and the Australian Jazz Quintet.

Much more Bethlehem is forthcoming . B .W.

HERB ELLIS & FREDDIE GREEN - RHYTHM WILLIE -CONCORD 10

This is a rare studio recording from the Concord Jazz Festival peopl e featuring the guitars of Elli s & Green. While the bass and drums hit a steady 1- 2-3 - 4 throughout most of the album, the guitarists and pia nist Ross Tompkins engage in tasty interplay , exchanging solos and building on each other's ideas . Rhythm Willie offers some classy guitar musi c from two players who've been around a good long while. Also - its well recorded and the pressings above average. B.W .

ERIC KLOSS - BODIES' WARMTH - MUSE 5077 Eric Kl oss is probably one of the more consistent

musi c ians around today . Bod1 es' Warmth, his third for Muse, is certainly descriptive of what happens here musically. This album displays , with excellent quality of recording by th e way, the depth of Eri c's approach to h1 s musi c. The only non- anginal here is Scarborough Fair, wh1ch is tastefully done in a fash1 on peculiar to Kl oss alone . Kl oss' band, known as Si lverl1ght, is fresh, modern and full of energy An abundance of creal IV i ty is evident th rouqhout.

Bodies' Warmth is worth your attent1 on. P .G.

DEXTER GORDON - THE APARTMENT - STEEPLECHASE 1025

The Apartment, r ecorded in Den mark , couldea5ily be Dexter's f1nest quartet r ecord 1ng s1nce Our Man In Pan s (Blue Note). Backed by Kenny Drew, Nhop and Tootl e Heath- Gordon blows mon? excil1ng, more and Tootl e Heath - Gordoro blows mort ' excd1ng, rr creative mus1c th an ever. He now play s the t0n0r left to h1m by the late: Ben Webster, and no doubt Ben's sp1nt was with h1m on th1 s dc.te .

Four tunes are stra1ght - forward, h1gh hea t cookers . On an album where no po1nt IS a low po1nt - Sf'PCial mention shou ld be made of th e f1rst of two ballads . Old Folks is a magn1f1cent duo perform ance by Gordon and bass1st Pede r sen.

ZOOT SIMS & THE GERSHWIN BROTHERS - PABLO 2310 744

The Gershwin Brothers are alive and well on this r ecording , in spirit that is. Ten oftheirstandards are represented her e, such as Summerflme, !GotRhythm, The Man I Love & 'S Wonderful . If th er e is one word that could best descri be Zoot, heard only on tenor. il is - swings. One li st ening will te ll you that th e same adjective can also be used for Os car Peterson, Joe Pass, Geo . Mraz & Grady Tate. So, if you have a weakness for Zoot, the Gershwin s or swinging jazz - th is r ecord is a must . B .W.

CHARLIE BYRD - TOP HAT - FANTASY F -94 96 Byrd is a top - rated guitari st with 17 albums to

h1s credit already . Top Hat puts h1m in a r elaxed, mellow mood relying exclusively on acousti c guitar . The acoustic instrument provides the des ired effect; creating a decidedly Latin feel throughout most of the album, as several of Byrd's albums have had in the past. Of note is his treatment of Chick Corea's, Some Time Ago and Antonio Carlos Jobim's , Aqua de Beber. Nat Adderly's fine cornet wo rk (usually muted) is heard on most of the tunes. J .H.

THE HANNA-FONTANA BAND -CONCORD 11 In Concord, California a jazz festiva l is held each

year amidst the f oothills of the Sierra - Nevada mountains. Great musi c, great atmosphere but a long distance for we Easterners to travel . However, the promoter, Carl Jefferson, cont1nues to r eco rd th e per-

formances such as this septet I ed by Jake Hanna & Carl Fontana . The musi c has a good time fee l - jam style, and it swings . Fine sol o ing from th e leaders, Bill Berry, Plas Johnson & Herb Ellis . The rhythm section is dead steady but pleasantly loose and th e musi c is well r ecorded. Good ingredi ents, andequally good results . B .W.

PETER ROBINSON - DIALOGUES FOR PIANO AND REEDS - TESTAMENT T - 4401

Peter Robin son has backed up pop singer Shawn Phillips for a number of years after playing th e most influential rol e in the once existant "Contraband" whi ch recorded one "Europeon" sounding album under that name. "Dialogues ... " dates back to 1972 and is a quaint collecti on of 11 short pieces (7 original) for a small ensembl e whi ch never numbers more than one piano and three reed pi ayers. Many of the duet pi eces are expand abl e, but as th ey are, none can be term ed anything less than exci t ing. Every second of thi s marve lous album is a trea t. Charles Orena, Alan Praskin , and Erni e Watts are the r eed player s. B .B .

BARNEY KESSELL - BLUE SOUL - BLACK LION 310 This one is not among the guitarist's best , but

offers some good musi c. Three personnel groupings are li sted, including a trio whi ch accounts for3 tunes . Some good blues is found on side two with T eddy Edwards, Jimmy Rowl es and an unidentifi ed band . In short, an average album from an artist who's had some great ones. B .W.

Anytime I play this record, a number of eyebrows raise questioning the validity of "avant-garde" jazz . How anyone can immediately equate this record to the avant -ga rde is beyond this reviewer's capacity for an open-mind. First of all, many noted musicians of our time have predicted the gradual synthesis of all world musics into one global form . Secondly, Dr. Karl Berger is a discipl e of Don Cherry and OrnetteColeman, who have both been doing many "non-jazz" things lately . Berger also has many unique ideas ofhisown .... well, while I've been telling you what this record is not, the

HOWARD McGHEE - SHADES OF BLUE - BLACK LION 305

I rather enJOY thi s one. Recorded in 1961, its a program of pure, laid back Mainstream Jazz . Ther e' s a club atmosphere on this studio r eco rding with good straight ah ead soloing from McGhee, Geo. Coleman and Junior Man ce. Its the blues tracks that fare the best, such as Arbee. A well rounded album of good l1stening musi c. B.W.

LARRY CORYELL - PLANET END - VANGUARD VSD 79367

Planet End contains material that guitari st Coryell recorded with his two most dynamic groups . There are two out racks from th e 1969 recorded album Spaces, that feature Coryell, McLaughlin, Cobham andMiroslav Vitous. There are also two cuts recorded with The Eleventh House. Eyes Of Love is an acoustic solo . This album shows what Coryell has done in the past, and is probably best for those who haven't been exposed to him previously. T .M.

Drew plays electnc and acoustic piano on tunes like, Wave, Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans, plus ori ginals by Drew and Pedersen .

KENNY DREW TRIO - DARK BEAUTY - SCS 1016 The Drew Pedersen duo is joined by that tasty

drummer Albert Heath for this excursion into creative jazz interpretations of standards like It could happen to you, and Blues Inn a Drew original. The magic of this trio jumps out at you from every track on this album. KENNY DREW AND NIELS- HENNING PEDERSEN -

· DUO 2 - SCS 10 10 Drew stays with acou stic p1ano on this one, his

control and interplay with NHOP on A Child is born and My shining hour convinces anyone that Drew is still a pianist of great stature.

KENNY DREW SOLO PIANO - EVERYTHING/LOVE scs 1007

I think of Tatur.1, Hines, Powell and Evans when I hear this set of standards and originals. Sheer j ny and masterful executions . HORACE PARLAN TRIO AND QUINTET -ARRIVALscs 1012

Another Ameri can pian1 st living in Europe, por " tras his strong rhythmic playing with Ed Thigp1n, ldrees Sui ieman, Bent Jaedig and Hugo Rasmussen on this fine set. A happy setting for Parlan who has not been heard from since around 1966.

TETE MONTOL/U TRIO - CATALONIAN FIRE -scs 1017

This incredible Spanish pianist is joined by Alb ert Heath and NHOP for melodic and inspirational interpretations of tunes such as Au Privave, Sweet Georgia Fame and his own Blues for Perla.

TETE MONTOL IU SOL 0 PIANO -MUSIC FOR PERLA scs 1021

Montoliu, a disciple of the AI Haig, McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett school, sparkles with brilliance on this solo creation. Here's that rainy day, Yesrerdays and Tete originals What is it?, Circe and Apartment512 among other tunes on this album show imense talent that requires wider exposure.

ANTHONY BRAXTON - IN THE TRADIT/ON-SCS 1015 Basically a Be- Bop set as opposed to the usual

Braxton. Superb support from Tete Montoliu, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen and Alb ert Heath . Braxton is clearly outstanding throughout, especia lly on Marsh-mallow. H.H.
