Upon his retirement from the Board, we want to thank Dr. Dudley S. Childress for his service to JRRD and the broader research community. A professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation and biomedical engineering, Dr. Childress served on JRRD's Editorial and Scientific Advisory Boards for 32 years. In this capacity, he contributed significantly to the journal's quality, scientific rigor, and prominence.
It has been wonderful working with Dr. Childress and learning from his vast knowledge and experiences. His dedication and hard work have been a motivation to us all. He will be sincerely missed. We wish him happiness in the future and a wonderful time with family and friends.

The immediacy index is calculated based on the papers published in a journal in a single calendar year. How does JRRD use iThenticate?Every article is run through
iThenticate before it is edited.
124 articles tested.21 articles found in violation.
Most we catch are self-plagiarism. We have only had one example of external plagiarism.
From JRRD Editorial Policies: “Plagiarism includes copying or paraphrasing text from others or self-work (self-plagiarism), copying equations or graphical renditions not commonly known, using previously published data, and using copied or altered photographs. Plagiarism is a violation of copyright law and is punishable by statute.”

What do we do about plagiarism?We follow COPE guidelines.
Contact author first. For self-plagiarism cases, most authors given chance to explain and correct manuscript.
Authors can put text in quotes and add footnote or rewrite sections.Manuscript is re-run through iThenticate after revision.
If plagiarism is intentional and egregious or author is unresponsive, author’s superior/institution/funding source may be contacted, following COPE flowchart.

The Rules Have ChangedWith the rise of new technology, publishers are working to establish new rules for plagiarism.We want to educate authors that practices accepted in the past will no longer be allowed.iThenticate and COPE recently sent a survey to editors with questions such as:
What are your views on verbatim or near-verbatim copying of a short extract from another work?What is your policy regarding authors who cut-and-paste materials from other sources and integrate it with their own text?Do you think papers previously published in conference proceedings can legitimately be republished in a journal with the addition of new content?
