Set progression: ii7b - V7 - I

• 1. In order to use ii7b - V7 - I you need to have the supertonic (2nd note of the tonic key) for two beats in the soprano part. For this cadence we will use one chord for each crotchet beat:

• 2. Now that you have identified your set progression using the note of the soprano line, write your ii7b chord. Remember, this will include the 7th above the root of chord ii (e.g below - E). Make sure the chord is 1st inversion:

• 3. Next we add chord V with a delayed 7th - V7 on the second crotchet (soprano line does not move). Remember, the 7th should always fall to the next chord (tonic - chord I). Then add your inner parts:

• 4. Finally, add the last chord of the progression (Chord I) to complete the cadence.

• 5. Check your work & play through your harmony to check for consecutives 5ths & octaves, awkward intervals or leaps, doubling and spacing.
