Studying: Stressful or Relaxing? Timothy Daniel F. Uy, 6 - Hemingway

Studying is considered as stressful to some students. This makes them not like school and they just go to school because they have to, not because they want to. Some also get pressured in studying to the point that they don’t want to study anymore. Gadgets and other devices distract them from studying. Because of this, people become lazy, sometimes too lazy to study.

To some, studying is stressful because instead of seeing it as fun, they see it as tiring and horrible. This gives them the wrong mindset of studying and so they treat it as stressful. Sometimes, the influences of the people affect the way they think and see studying. There are also many distractions such as gadgets and games. Parents and teachers find ways to make studying enjoyable, but I think we, as students should be the one making the change. We should look at studying as fun and a chance to learn and we should treat it as our hobby. When we change our perspective about studying, it won’t seem hard for us anymore.

Academics vs. Values Cate Jasmine G. Ong, 5 - Kepler

School always counts on your academic skill. It is either you are

good at school or you are terrible in academics. Our deportment is also counted in school. What do you think is more important: your academic skill or how kind you are?

We agree that values are better. What is the point of studying if you are not disciplined? You talk with your classmates while the teacher is talking. Maybe you cheat in tests so it ends up that you don’t learn anything. If you are not well-behaved, maybe you stand up and distract your classmates from learning and the teacher gets distracted, too. See? There’s no logic if your grades are good but you don’t have basic values.

School needs to be a balance between academics and values. Without discipline and godly values, one won’t go very far.

Old-Fashioned Books vs. Newfangled Gadgets Gabe Thomas A. Tan, 6 - Hemingway

Have you heard of a two-year-old who would sit still day by

day for around half an hour listening to her mom read "The Frog and Toad," or "The Magic School Bus?" That super attentive boy was I. Mom did not only read the texts but she also provided lots of information to my inquisitive mind. We built such a strong connection during our read-along. Such was the beginning of my love for books. By now, I hardly spend time with my mom reading anymore, but you'd probably have to wrestle with me before I surrender any book that I'm reading to anyone.

I'm left with my Ipad for entertainment and research. I lose track of my surroundings when I'm hypnotized into the world of Clash Royale. I may have started a slouching posture with all that sitting in front of my computer. My eyesight may have gone from bad to worse with the constant glow of artificial light from the monitor. Although technology may support my learning, I still prefer the good old-fashioned book. That way, I won't be in constant battle with my conscience whether to do Math or use the limited elixir to attack my opponents in a computer game.

3 News! News! News!

Quake Alert: The JCA Earthquake Drill Gabe Thomas A. Tan, 6 - Hemingway

"Riiinggg!" The siren wailed with such abrupt intensity that everyone jumped for cover. We scrambled under our tables, holding on to jugs and emergency bags. Teachers sprinted about outside, gripping video cameras and barking orders.

Preparing for a long wait, we shifted into comfortable positions and synchronized a few watches…

"Krang, krang, krang!" The alarm bell screamed even more urgently. My classmates started fleeing out the door. They scurried amidst the crowd of teachers and students. 10:30 A.M. flashed at my Casio watch. After two minutes of huffing and puffing, we all made it to the blue basketball court.

The whole of Jubilee Christian Academy and Metro Manila simulated a magnitude 7 earthquake last July 30, 2015. Now, we can be assured that our emergency preparedness skills will kick in should an earthquake hit Manila. This earthquake drill has reminded us what to do when and if there is an earthquake.

Appreciation Day was a Big Hit!

Cate Jasmine G. Ong and Rianne Maxine O. Liao, 5 - Kepler

Teacher’s Day was fun last September 24, 2015. All the teachers and staff loved it. But the huge event needed hard work and preparation before it happened. Many students and a few teachers had to pitch in for the big day. There were many things to do and they accomplished them.

Teacher’s Day celebration in Jubilee happens in the quadrangle every year. It has become a yearly celebration for teachers and staff. During the celebration, teachers were very happy. First, they came down the ramp holding flowers. After that, students from Grade 4-6 sang the song “In This Moment”. Soon after, there was modeling from club members of Fash and dancing from teachers and Fitness First club members. Student council officers also prepared a cake as a token of appreciation to teachers.

Giving thanks to all our teachers was a lot of fun.

JUBILEE AT IT’S 49TH

Timothy Daniel F. Uy, 6 – Hemingway

Last February 4, 2016, the Jubilee Christian Academy Foundation Day celebration was held at the E. Rodriguez Campus. The whole school celebrated 49 years of God’s grace and goodness. There were many booths and stalls. There were some which contained toys, cards, and other things. A lot had delicious snacks like fries, sausages, and shawarma. There were also rice meals to make sure students’ stomachs were filled. Students were able to enjoy drinks like juices, lemonades, and frappes, too.

Part of the activities was the Intramurals championship games in basketball, volleyball, badminton, and relay games. Students , teachers, and parents enjoyed watching all of these. Indeed, God has blessed us and our school. He has blessed us continuously and gave us the chance to be part of this year’s amazing fair. Each year’s foundation day fair just keeps on getting better. This year’s fair was the best fair in Jubilee, wouldn’t you agree?

4 English Only…Please!

The Mountain of English Cate Jasmine G. Ong, 5 - Kepler

One day, in English class, my teacher was talking about Story Elements. It was so hard to understand.

Worst of all, I was getting sleepy… I woke up at the bottom of a mountain. I looked at my watch and it was 11:30 AM. I need to get home

for lunch. I looked at a sign that said: Home. My home is a mountain away. I started at the beginning of the mountain. Funny. When my teacher used the pyramidal plot, she put at the bottom of the mountain: the beginning. I started climbing up the mountain. As I progressed, I nearly slipped and fell. Whoa! The action is rising here. Something still reminds me of the pyramidal plot. I then reached the top of the mountain. I was so excited because I was nearly home. I could see it from here. I looked down the side I was about to go down to. It looked soft enough to slide down, but it could be harder than it seemed. I looked if there were any sharp objects. None. I decided to take the risk. Whee! As I slid down the mountain, I thought of the pyramidal plot again. I don’t know why. I finally ended my journey as I reached the bottom of the mountain.

I woke from my dream. My teacher then said we would have a graded drill. I was scared. Suprisingly, after checking, I got a perfect score! I then realized that my dream held all the answers. The story starts at the beginning, then deepens and the action starts to rise. In the middle of the story, the excitement is at its fullest. Going down the mountain signified the problem in the story being solved. Then reaching the other side of the mountain is the end of the story. My dream saved me! Hooray!

The Trio Sadie Ann G. Ocampo, 6 – Milton

Back when we were in Grade 5, there was a new student named Lynelle. I wanted to welcome her and make sure that she felt comfortable here in JCA. We became not just good friends, but best friends! My other best friend, Bernyce, got jealous of my friendship with Lynelle. So, I told Lynelle that Bernyce is jealous. We both decided that Lynelle and Bernyce should spend more time with each other.

One day, I went to our classroom from the canteen alone because Lynelle and Bernyce were together. When I finally got to the classroom, Bernyce was laughing like crazy and so was Lynelle. I asked Bernyce why she was laughing and she said that Lynelle was so funny and kind. I suddenly felt a pang of jealousy. Has Bernyce found a new best friend? I decided to spend more time with Bernyce. Once Bernyce and I were so close, Lynelle started feeling jealous. Would this jealousy ever end?

We then chose to stay together, not as a pair, but as a trio. The three of us became the best of friends from then on.

5 Talas-Isip

Kayang-Kaya Basta’t Kasama Siya Kyle Chauncey P. Chiu, 6-Milton

Tunay Na Pagkakaibigan Viencis P. Dy, 6 – Hemingway

Starting to Love Math Bernyce Christiana C. Dy, 6-Milton

When I started in grade 6, I already had my mind set that I don’t like Math. Why have I never liked Math? It is because I find it hard and I was never good at it. I would always get a careless mistake when I answer tests or problems. So, I already knew Math would be a harder subject this year, and I thought that I would hate it more.

I didn’t expect that I would have a change of heart. After a few quarters, I found out that Math was actually easy. My teacher, Mrs. Pekitpekit, helped me in liking Math. She taught us patiently and made sure that we understood the lessons. She gave me positive feedbacks and complimented me for my high grades. She also gave me a study buddy to teach. I was praised and appreciated because my study buddy’s performance improved during that time. Because of these, I started liking Math.

Now, I look forward to taking the next step in Math. This is to try the MTAP qualifying test next year. I’m excited for the first time to study Math. I may not know what the future has for me, but for sure, Math will be a big part of my future!

6 The Amazing World of Numbers

My World Math Competition Experience Harrold Evian S. Lee, 6 – Keats

On April 18, 2015, my brother and I joined the 12th World Mathematics Competition, organized by Sakamoto Ltd. that was held in Harris Hotel and Conventions Festival Citylink Bandung, Indonesia.

Even though this was my 3rd time to join the competition, I still felt nervous. At the Grand Ballroom, I saw a lot of delegates who came from different countries such as Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. Before the competition started, I prayed to God and asked Him to guide us and give us knowledge so that we can solve the problems correctly.

Solving the problems was not easy. They have divided them from easy to difficult and challenging problems for us to solve. I tried my best to answer them correctly with the help from our Almighty God. After the competition, I was able to play games with the other delegates. It was really fun since I was able to make new friends with the other delegates.

That evening was the awarding ceremony. I was really excited and nervous at the same time. As they started to announce the bronze medalist winner, my heart started to pound very fast. My brother’s name was called, but my name was not called. Next, they announced the silver medalists. One name after another, but still my name was not called. Finally, they announced the gold medalists. When they mentioned my name, I felt so happy that I jumped out of my seat. I could not believe that I won a gold medal. My mom was so proud of us.

It was a great experience for me to join this competition. I never thought that I would achieve this far. With the help and support from my family, I was able to win. I also thank the Lord for this great achievement. For without Him, my brother and I wouldn’t have won those medals.

One day, my friends invited me to go watch a movie with them. While walking towards the meeting place, I stumbled across an extraordinary wall. I went near it then it sucked me in.

While being sucked in, I saw a lot of great scientists. When I finally reached the other end of the wall, I saw a man named Atom holding a sign stating “Answer 3 scientific question then you may enter.” I answered the questions then he allowed me to go in.

I saw a lot of futuristic things. I even saw Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and many more great scientists. They told me about their discoveries

After, two weeks of staying there, I missed my family and friends. I asked my friend, Atom, how to get back to my world and he said “you have to talk to the king if you want to leave.” I went to meet the king and discussed my problem with him and he said “I’ll let you out of this world but we have to set a portal.”

After a day of setting up the portal, everyone in that world left me with a gift: the book of human knowledge. I was so happy that I was left with no words. We said our farewells and then I left. When I came back home I saw everyone’s worried faces, but then when I told them my story, they were impressed.

Intramurals 2016 Shawn Zedric T. Reaport, 6 - Hemingway

This year, we celebrated our intramurals last January 8, 2016. There were a lot of activities and games. Sports such as basketball, volleyball, and badminton are included in the intramurals.

Grades 1-6 for the first time, celebrated the opening program all together. In the past years, it was celebrated in two groups, grades 1-3 and grades 4-6.

This year, the opening program was started by a parade of athletes with their muses, escorts, and mascots bearing each class’ banner. After the opening prayer and oath of sportsmanship, the muse and escort of each class, together with their mascot promenaded around the quadrangle for everyone to see. The yell and cheer dance competition followed.

Everyone was in awe at each of the presentations. After the announcement of winners, the volleyball and basketball games started at once.

All of Philippine History in One Day?

Gabe Thomas A. Tan, 6 – Hemingway

I was elated as the bus whisked us off to the Ayala Museum. I had visited it before, and it's time to revisit the beautiful potteries and the golden artifacts. As I stepped inside, I marveled at the polished look and the solemn atmosphere that pervaded the room. Our tour guide explained about six museum rules. She showed us a short clip about Philippine history. After the orientation, she allowed us to explore the rest of the place in groups. On the first floor, we marveled at colorful paintings and abstract art. My group trooped to the second floor, which was brimming with more than 40 dioramas of important events in our history. The third floor offered more dazzling artworks. The real highlight of the trip was when we got a first glimpse of the gold on the fourth floor. There were literally tons of golden artifacts. Some were worn as bracelets, necklaces and even belts! There were also dozens of fragile antique Chinese vases and ancient pottery. By watching a portion of the videos and reading the texts, we managed to glean some precious information about our cultural heritage.

Overall, we managed to learn a lot about the Philippine history and ancient artifacts, which complement what we learned from Mr. Arre's Araling Panlipunan. This trip piqued our interest to learn more about the rich history and traditions of our ancestors. If you want to learn more of our history, the Ayala Museum is the place to go.

Wushu Zachary Ryan L. Gan, 5 – Euclid

Wushu is both an exhibition and a full-contact sport derived from traditional Chinese martial arts. It is fun from the start because you make new friends, you get to exercise, and you have good coaches to guide you through the sessions. You have to go through the different levels. The first level is easy, but you have to memorize stuff and get used to them. The second level is a bit harder. After that is the third level, which I am currently in. It is a bit hard, but if you want to master it, you have to train more. It also has longer training time. Also, by third level, you have to train with weapons. Aside from this, you can go to tournaments with higher-leveled classmates. The fourth level is for the highest students and the last is for the coaches. By these levels, you will learn many more things and more weapons.

11 Musings, Trivia, and More!!!

An Unforgettable Study Tour in Bataan Abigail Elise C. Tan, 5 -Kepler

My experience during the Bataan Study Tour was awesome! It was a two-day tour held last February 25-26. I got to spend time with my friends and learn new things. We had games, activities, a tour around Las Casas, and so much more. We slept in a hotel in Las Casas and had fun.

I had to wake up early because I needed to get to school at about 6:00am. It took us about three hours on the bus to get to Bataan. We ate some snacks, played talked, and napped to pass the time.

Our first stop was Mt. Samat. We listened to someone talking about the history of Bataan. After that, we saw the weapons used back then.

We went to the hotel to drop off our stuff and rested. We had lunch after that. The food was delicious. After lunch, we took the tour around Las Casas. During the tour, we saw Spanish houses. The tour guide explained the history behind the houses. We had time to buy souvenirs and play some games.

In the hotel room, I was with Rianne, Cate, and Phoenix. We were with my mom, Mrs. Eleanor “Elen” Tan, who was the parent volunteer. I played some iPad with my friends, took a bath, got ready, and met up with the others downstairs. Dinner was amazing. I saw one of my friends, Elisha and decided to sit with him and his friends. We played some Pokemon Trading Cards. Of course, we didn’t forget to eat the food. I liked the food. After dinner, we sat by the beach and had a bonfire. We ate marshmallows and enjoyed. We headed to the hotel to get some sleep for the next day.

Before my friends and I slept, we played for a while. The funny thing is, once we tried to sleep, we can’t! We were still awake and noisy; well except for Cate. She was so annoyed and sleepy to the point she got her neck pillow and used it as ear muffs. It was a funny night indeed.

The next day , we woke up very early so we had time to play and get ready. Our breakfast was a buffet. All the food there were yummy. I ate tocino with some egg and drank orange juice. After breakfast, we drove over to the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant.

The power plant was shut down but we were allowed to have a tour around it. We learned what was inside. We got to see the inside of the building and saw all the machines. It was a cool experience being inside the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, but I didn’t know the next activity would be even better.

The next place we went to was the Pawikan Conservation Center. This was my favorite part of the study tour because we got to release Pawikan! The Pawikan there were so cute and small. Each student had one Pawikan. We went to the beach to release the cute little buddies. Before we released them, we had a chance to name them. I named mine Crush after the sea turtle in the movie “Finding Nemo.” I released Crush off to the sea. It was very fun to see all those Pawikan run to the sea. A very sad fact about releasing Pawikan though is only 1/100 Pawikan could survive when you release them.

The Study Tour was almost over but we still had one more lunch before we headed back to JCA. I sat with my friends and talked about the Study Tour and what was their favorite part of it. We ate our lunch happily knowing that this was an amazing experience for all of us. After our last lunch, we sat on the bus and headed back to JCA. We all went home with a smile. Although it might be over, but there is always a next time. I enjoyed the two days with my friends and I learned a lot about Bataan. Hopefully in the future, I will be joining more study tours in school.

1. …Simon, a devout man who declared Jesus as the Messiah soon after he was born, told Mary she would suffer along with her son.

2. … Matthew, also known as Levi, was a publican?” As Jesus walked along, he saw Levi, son of Alpheus, sitting at the tax collectors booth. “Follow me” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.

3. …“Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself” is what Jesus called the second commandment. This applies to everyone, including our enemies, since they are also neighbors, regardless of where they live. This teaching means we are not to put our interests above those of others.
