INTRODUCTIONThis awards program encourages and celebrates outstanding achievements by identifying, recognising and promoting excellence in the practice of electrical and communications design, construction and installation in each state.

Theawardsalsoprovidepeerrecognitionofexcellence;raisetheprofileoftheelectricalandcommunications industry, local skills and capability by highlighting its contribution to the economy, community and to the environment.

The purpose of this document is to help the Entrant:• Enter these awards without undue cost or effort; • Enter the most appropriate award category(s);• Maximise their chance of winning an award, and• Have their project presented to maximum advantage at the Awards Event, and in the

various media appearances associated with the awards

This document contains all of the information Entrants should need to submit an entry, except for the Entrants’ submission content.

NECA urges entrants to keep submissions simple and concise, so as to avoid excessive effort and cost of submission as well as to assist the judging process. There are limits on submission word count of 4,000 to 5,000 and NECA does not seek sophisticated graphic design in submission material. Instead NECA would prefer quality graphics of the Entrant’s company logo and photo-graphs for the audio-visual and media material.

BENEFITS OF ENTRYThe NECA Excellence Awards give entrants the opportunity to showcase their work to industry, colleagues, media, government, clients, sponsors and the general public.

All entrants will receive the following:• Inclusion in a professional audio-visual presentation at the Awards Event and a ‘clip’ for

their own use• Inclusion in the full colour Excellence Awards Showcase NECA NEWS article• The right to use the NECA Excellence Awards “Finalist” logo

Category winners will also receive:• An award endorsed by the NECA State President announced and presented at the Awards

Event• Automatic nomination to the prestigious NECA National Excellence Awards• Additional media promotion• The right to use the NECA Excellence Awards “Winners” logo

JUDGING PROCESSThe entire judging process is managed by an Independent Chair Person, to ensure impartiality. Submissions are judged on the Entrant’s response to the entry criteria. The Judging Panel consists of industry representatives with working knowledge and experience of the industry. Every submission will be judged by up to three of these Judges.

Each Judge independently reviews each submission and does not discuss the contents of a submission or their opinion between themselves. i.e. score sheets are not passed between judges. The judges reserve the right to make more than one or to make no award in a category.

The judges assess and score numerous entries so it’s important to ensure each submission stands out. Remember who you are writing for and who your audience is! The Excellence Award judges...• Will read dozens of submissions• Cannot read between the lines• Will like a well presented business success story• Willlikeclaimstobequantifiedandsubstantiatedifpossible• Will like clear and concise writing• Will like succinct paragraphs and sentences• Like photographs or illustrations to be used to demonstrate key submission elements• Don’t mind reading bullet points and graphs• Don’t want the design content to overpower the submission

Ten Tips to Help Write an Entry• Address each criterion clearly, in the order they are listed by NECA and under clear headlines.

All Criteria in all categories are mandatory. Failing to address a criterion will result in a score of zero for that category.

• Accurately describe the business• Quantify any claims• Provide clear support documentation• Quality not quantity• Content not presentation• Holdbackontech-speak,jargonandundefinedacronyms• Stress innovation, points of difference and excellence• Getanindependentpersontoreviewthefinalsubmission

Page 5: JUDGING CRITERIA AND ENTRANT PROCESS - NECA

INTERVIEWS/PRESENTATIONSA panel typically consisting of three or more experienced judges, will judge each entry. The judges will initially review the written submission and may subsequently arrange an interview with the En-trant company representatives

AllinterviewsareheldinJuly.Entrantswillbenotifiedinadvanceofwhentheinterviewswillbeheld. Interview time slots will be allocated for each submission i.e. if the same project has been entered into two categories; entrants may still need to attend an interview for each category because there may be different judges involved.

The interview presentation often has a big impact on the judging panel and should be conducted by key team member(s) such as the Project Manager and / or staff that worked directly on the project. No more than three people attend (due to time constraints).

The interview should comprise of a 10 minute presentation to expand on the written submission (e.g. PowerPoint delivered by the entrant). The judges have already read the submission, so there is no need to repeat information already submitted. The presentation will be followed by questions from judges, with the interview process taking up to 30-40 minutes in total.

TherewillbeacomputerwithstandardMicrosoftOfficesoftwareinstalledandprojectororlargescreen television available for Entrants to use for their Presentation.

The Judging Panel shall be entitled to request further information as this may be considered necessary to make a decision. If only one entry is received in a category this category will be judged if the entry has merit and satisfiesthecategorycriteria,Iftheentrylacksmeritordoesnotsatisfyallofthecategorycrite-ria(inthejudgingpanel’sopinion)theentrywillbewithdrawnandtheentrantnotifiedpriortotheinterview process. Winners will be announced at the State Awards Event. NECA will have an embargo in place until that time.
