    Jude had its . originin Japan. The . original forme

    of self-defense known as jiu jitsu were lonq pra -

    cticed in secret by the Samuri (warriers). In 1882

    the late Dr. J ' Iqoro Kane (k n own as the father of

    medern j udo) made a thorouqh and cemprehensive

    s t udy of these ancient forms of self - defense and

    integrated the best of these techniques Into what

    is ne w k nown as medem judo , Dr . Kane, in apply-

    ing the basic principle of jude , 'ma x imum eff i -

    ciency with m irrirnu r neffort seen develeped the

    basic struct u re of judo ,

    Teday judo is t he natienal a por t i n Jap an -j us t

    as baseball is in America . It is taught to the

    children at an early age and is a required subject

    in the scheels . Jud e is rapidly beceming an Im -

    pertant spert in Europe as well as in America .

    Contrary to pepular belief . j udo i s . iot merely a

    DR . JIGORO KANO form o f self-defense - - altheugh it may be appliedas such- - but is recegniz ed by the Natienal AAU

    as an amateur cempetitiv e s port . Some 400 clubs in the United States attest to

    the grewing pepula r ity of jud o,

    The D e tro it Ju d o C lu b wa s formed in 195 2 as a direct result of the growing pop-ul a rity of J udo i n t h e D e t r o i t area. Th e p u rpose of this organization is to s timul-a te i nt e r e s t in th e a rt a n d sp ort of Jud o a nd to m a inta in a m o n g it s m e mbers at ru e sp ieit o f amateu r i s m a nd sportsman-l ike c onduct . The c lub o f fe rs an oppor-tu n i ty fo r its memb ers to w o rk to w ard higher rank throug h co mp etit ion w i th fe l lowjudo ist and members of other judo clu bs throughout the cou nt ry.
