Heart of a designer. Head of an explorer.
There’s nothing quite like tasting a new fl avour for the fi rst time.
Food-lover’s paradiseStantec believes in investing all their concessions with the unique character of the
City and region in which they are located. To this end they believe in partnering
with local chefs and restaurateurs who will bring unique culinary creations to the
airport environment.
Savour the ExperienceHere, innovative restaurants and talented chefs create new cuisines based on
traditional foods and flavours but add their own unique twists. A delicate balance
between shocking the taste buds and comforting the soul.
Local FlavourWe are thoughtful observers of a changing
Landscape. We’ve noticed that consumers
are looking for more than a quality food and
beverage experience. Authentic relationships,
local flavours, and emotional connections are
at the root of what people are craving. They
want the story, whether it’s a chef inspired
concept, coffee bar, sophisticated cocktail
lounge, or a place to stop in for fresh
homegrown kombucha.
Travellers want healthy choices, local
fl avours, and sophisticated comforts.
ComfortsWhether the visitor’s journey is a brief commute
or several thousand miles, welcoming comfort is
key. The chef takes pride in offering guests an
authentic taste of place and the best of nearby
farms: fresh, beautifully ripe fruit and vegetables,
hand crafted wines and ales, and artisan
Charcuterie. The menu might be farm-to-table,
dock-to-table, or forest-to-table, changing to
refl ect the gift of the seasons. The space also
refl ects this deep reverence for great food.
Fresh IdeasWe have a multitude of ideas about the ways in
which travelers can savour their experiences. Let
us show you food and beverage, Stantec style.

RECREATION & TOURISM ACTIVITIES, FEATURES & OPERATIONSThe river is a popular all season recreation and tourism resource. Motorized and non-motorized land and water based activities occur on the River and within the river valley.
Though there have been few coordinated initiatives to capitalize on the recreation and tourism potential of the lower Athabasca River, it is popular with local recreationists and adventurous tourists throughout the year. The river provides opportunities ranging from short day outings to long multi-day or multi-week wilderness expeditions. Canoeing, jet boating, ATV’ing, fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing and camping are popular summer activities while snowmobiling, skiing, dog sledding, and ice fishing are common winter pastimes. The river is also the focal
point for a variety of annual special events and celebrations such as riverfront festivals and jet boat rallies.
There are a small number of commercial recreation and tourism businesses operating on the River that provide front-country, mid-country, and backcountry visitor experiences. These operations provide lodge based accommodations and jet boating, fishing, and canoe based guiding services. There are no known winter based commercial operations.
A recreation and tourism opportunity is the ability for an individual to participate in a preferred activity, within a preferred setting, to derive a desired experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS:
Developed accommodations along the River are limited. Two un-serviced major campgrounds exist at the Riverside Recreation Area and Poachers Landing Recreation Area. While the River offers many opportunities to camp along its shores in medium to low flow, two formalized minor campgrounds exist at the Grand Rapids portage. River users can choose to stay in hotels or bed and breakfasts in the Town of Athabasca or Fort McMurray. Near the House River confluence, cabins owned by Grand Rapids Wilderness Adventures provide the only on-river fixed roof accommodations.
Other accommodations, such as the Blue Berry Hill RV Campground and the Hilltop Oasis Bed and Breakfast are available, but do not have direct river access.
ATTRACTIONS:
Visitors are attracted to the River because of its built and natural recreation and tourism features. From the paved pathways, playground, spray park, and skatepark facilities at the Athabasca Riverfront Park in the Town of Athabasca, to the La Biche River Wildland Park, the remnants of the historic HBC hotel, early bitumen exploration wellsites, the Grand Rapids concretions, and abundant wildlife, the River boasts an impressive bounty of recreation and tourism attractions. As one of Canada’s historic gateways to the North, the River itself is a nationally significant recreation and tourism feature. Meanwhile other features, such as the Pelican Settlement or the Grand Island railway, tell important stories about Alberta’s and Canada’s history, and other features, such as the redrock fossils and German Cabin, create interesting attractions for visitors.
AMENITIES:
Amenities and services along the River are limited to the Town of Athabasca and Fort McMurray. Here visitors have access to grocery stores, fuel, waste pump-outs, liquor stores, equipment supplies, visitor information, medical treatment, and other essential services. Once visitors depart Athabasca or Fort McMurray, amenities are limited to those provided at the un-serviced major and minor campgrounds and for guests at the Grand Rapids Wilderness Adventures lodge.
ACCESS:
Access to the River between the Town of Athabasca and Poachers Landing Recreation Area is generally easy and includes boat launches at Centennial Park, Riverside Recreation Area, and Poachers Landing Recreation Area. Beyond Poachers Landing, access to the River is challenging. The Municipal District (MD) of Opportunity is exploring the potential development of a new campground and boat launch at the Calling River confluence and there is rough ATV trail access to the River at the Upper Wells access. There is no road access or boat launches between the Upper Wells access point and Fort McMurray.
