The Music Hall can’t wait to welcome musical theater star kurt Jenkins—cited as “gifted, infectious, and positively irresistible” by The Portsmouth Herald. kurt is taking time off from his role in Million Dollar Quartet in Chicago to reprise his starring role in Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story at The Historic Theater July 9-13. We caught up with him recently to talk about why Buddy’s story resonates across generations, and what makes the play so rewarding for performers and audiences alike.

What do you like best about playing the role of Buddy? Playing Buddy is the most fun I’ve ever had on stage. The energy exchange between the cast and the audience is unlike anything else I’ve experienced! Plus, the music and the story of Buddy Holly is so rewarding to perform. I’m always discovering something new within his music.

What is your favorite musical number in the show, and why? My favorite number in the show is “Not Fade Away.” Not only is it one of my favorite Buddy tunes, but it is attached to a pivotal point in the story. The Apollo Theatre back then was not the safest place for a couple of white kids from Texas, and both the scene and the song show the unbiased influence of music. It’s the moment when Buddy starts truly believing in himself and embodying the rock-star aura.

Why do we keep revisiting this era of musical history? This era in music history resonates with our pioneering spirits—these were just a couple of kids making it up as they went along. All the early rockers were. And without Buddy, rock and roll wouldn’t have been the same. The Beatles revered him. His guitar technique was hugely influential. He invented the “power trio” format that’s been used by so many classic bands from Cream to The Jimi Hendrix Experience and from Stevie Ray Vaughn to Rush.

What is it about Buddy’s personal story that resonates with people of all ages and all walks of life?An underdog kid plays a hand in changing in the face of culture, rises to meteoric fame, and dies just as he’s hitting his prime. It’s a classic tragedy that’s perfect for storytelling. People relate to it first because of the music. Then you’re truly hooked when you get a glimpse of the passion and brains behind it all. If you’re of Buddy’s generation, then you can be a kid again. If you’re of my generation, then you’ll experience the most fun history lesson you’ll have all year. And kids will love it, too—just listen to the music. Buddy Holly and Miley Cyrus are singing about the same things, just packaged differently for their respective generations. Everyone should experience the music and the story of Buddy Holly.

See the Loft transformed into a European-style nightclub this summer! Our exciting new series, the Left Bank Cabaret, features intimate evenings with ac-claimed international, national, and local musicians. “With intimate table seating, an array of craft cocktails, a mysterious host known as Monsieur Le Tuck Tuck, and more, the Left Bank Cabaret brings a fresh, new ambiance to The Music Hall and to Portsmouth,” says Executive Director Patricia Lynch. “Join us in a luxe cabaret environment for fun and stylish evenings.”

The Left Bank Cabaret—named for the city of Portsmouth’s location on the left bank of the Piscataqua River—begins Thursday, July 25 with the gentlemanly airs and amazing footwork of hip-hop dancers Wondertwins, visiting from the Apollo Theater in Harlem; and ends Saturday, August 9, with sweet-voiced contemporary vocalist taylor o’donnell and her band. Among the other musi-cal acts coming to the series are Austrian-born chanteuse ute gferer with on Saturday, July 26; Indie harpist/singer-songwriter Mikaela davis and local favorite clara Berry with her band Wooldog on Tuesday, July 29; Seacoast pianist Patrick Dorow bringing his musical family for Patrick dorow’s Piano Room on Wednesday, July 30; and Grammy-nominated, former American Idol Judge kara dioguardi performing her greatest hits and sharing the stories behind them on Friday, August 1 and Saturday, August 2.

Don’t miss the amazing array of star power coming to the big screen of the Historic Theater on saturday, July 19, when one of the most beloved stories of our time, Driving Miss Daisy, airs in HD at 3:30. It stars two of the world’s greatest living actors—five-time Tony Award winner and three-time Academy Award nominee angela Lansbury and two-time Tony Award winner and Academy Award winner James earl Jones— as well as four-time Tony Award winner Boyd gaines.

Alfred Uhry’s 1988 Pulitzer–Prize winning play also won an Oscar for Best Picture in 1989. The play tells the affecting story of the decades-long relationship between an elderly Southern Jewish woman, Daisy Werthan, and her compassionate African-American chauffeur, Hoke Colburn. Their iconic tale of pride, changing times, and the transfor-mative power of friendship has warmed the hearts of millions world-wide. The on-screen broadcast was shot during the play’s Australian tour after sell-out seasons on Broadway and London’s West End. “Every playwright dreams of having a perfect rendition of his play last forever,” said playwright Alfred Uhry. “I am blessed to have it happen for me with this production of Driving Miss Daisy.”
