When my brother and I travel up to the Northwoods to fish, we drive through beautiful farm country. This year, with the good rainfall, farmers are blessed, and everything is a verdant, dark green color. What struck me this year was a splendid sight I had not seen before. As we were driving through central Wisconsin, I looked at the field growing next to the highway, and I saw hundreds of rows light purple flowers. It was a beautiful sight to see a field of purple blossoms, stretching from the highway in the front to distant trees in the back. I was curious as to what plants they may have been. Since we were driving through potato country, I surmised they may have been potatoes, but I was not certain. When we came back home, I told my mom about these flowers. My mom grew potatoes when she was younger. She would know. I asked her if potatoes ever have purple flowers. Mom

said that sometimes they do, it depends on a certain variety. So, now I knew. The blanket of light purple blossoms was a field of blooming potato plants. As I looked at those blooming potatoes, I saw how they grew in straight rows. Some plants, like potatoes, a farmer plants in straight rows. Other plants, however, have not always been planted in straight lines. My mom recalls how she planted wheat; she would walk in the field and throw, scatter seed onto the tilled soil. Even today, in many parts of the world, this is how many people still plant grains, and, especially in the time of Jesus, this is how everybody planted grains, like wheat. This week, from the Gospel of Matthew, we hear, “and he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: "A sower went out to sow.” Immediately, Jesus’ listeners would have understood what it looked like, although it’s unfamiliar to us. At the time of Christ’s earthly life, the fields were not like the current ones, especially those in the developed world. They were just barely cleared inconsistent land with stones, thorns, etc. Jesus refers to this kind of field, which was not plowed before planting, but after. The seed was spread all over the field, even in the paths that crossed it and in rocky areas or areas full of thorns. The parable begins with the words “a sower went out to sow.” A sower is one who scatters seeds so that they may grow and be harvested later. In this parable, the sower is our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of Man (Mt. 13:37), and the seed is the Word of God. Pope Benedict XVI says that this parable is an “autobiographical parable.” As the sower goes out to plant the seed, so Jesus exits the house of Nazareth, to sow in all the good news that God saves humanity. As the sower was working, His seed fell on four different types of soil: road, rocky ground, thorny ground, and good soil. The first type of soil described in the parable is the soil that is part of a path, or a road. Early Christian writers wrote that the path represents the world, because our life here in this world is simply a path to eternal life. Our goal is not this world. There is nothing in this world we should want. Our desire should be focused on the Kingdom of Heaven and eternal life with God. Some of the seed fell along this path. Then Jesus tells us that the birds of the air came and devoured it. St. Cyril of Alexandria teaches us to be careful in understanding what the birds of the air are in this parable. They are not birds, but rather, evil spirits. These evil spirits destroy the seed of the Word of God in people who are more concerned with the world than with their eternal lives. They become so focused on the world and the business of life that the Word of God has no chance to take root in them, and evil spirits ultimately come and destroy the seed in these people’s hearts. In this parable, our Lord is trying to teach us not to be too focused on the path of this world. Are we, the followers of Christ, too concerned with this world, rather than with eternal life? The latest statistics show that eighty to eighty-five percent of Catholics do not attend Mass on Sundays. What do you think?

Please pray for all fallen away Catholics and for those who have stopped practicing the faith and believing in God. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with her maternal care and St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus

W młodości mama uprawiała ziemniaki, na pewno by

Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!

St. Joseph School: A Community of Faith, Knowledge and Service.

708-458-2927 Mr. Lawrence Manetti, Principal

Pope John Paul II in his address to the Bishops of the United States said about Catholic Schools: “A Catholic school is a place where students live a shared experience of faith in God and where they learn the riches of Catholic culture. Taking proper account of the stages of human development, the freedom of individuals, and the rights of parents in the education of their children, Catholic schools must help students to deepen their personal relationship with God and to discover that all things human have their deepest meaning in the person and teaching of Jesus Christ.” St. Joseph Catholic School has been in existence for over one hundred years. During that time much has changed about our school but the mission remains the same; to educate children in an environment where Catholic-Christian values are infused into the curriculum. Because our Catholic Identity is of the utmost importance, during this summer we are reaching out to families that have shown an interest in educating their children in the Catholic Faith and asking them to consider joining our school community. If you are thinking that a Catholic Education is beyond your means, STOP, please make an appointment to speak with our principal. There are a number of assistance programs which can assist you in paying the tuition and make it fit into your budget. St. Joseph School knows that keeping up with current trends in technology and education is very important. We also recognize that learning the basics is also crucial. Our teachers have access to SMART Boards, laptops, and other tools to help children understand what is being taught in class. We use technology to support lessons and present information in different ways. Most importantly, our teachers know their students. Our teacher – pupil ratio helps to support student learning. Our teachers love when children succeed! Whether it is a 3 year-old mastering the use of scissors or an eighth grader writing an extraordinary essay, we celebrate each child’s accomplishment. Our extra-curricular activities are designed to meet the wants and needs of all of our children. Opportunities exist to engage any child, from sports to our Dance or Drama Club, we feel your child will find something besides academics that interest him or her. I hope you will take the opportunity to come to know St. Joseph School. Call to make an appointment to visit and tour our school or attend one of our information meetings. They are scheduled for: Monday, July 24th 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 30th 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon. Wednesday, August 9th 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. We hope you will take this opportunity to get to know our school and parish community. God Bless. Mr. Lawrence Manetti, Principal
