Opening lead: «9. East wins the «A and returnsa spade, West playing the 3. Plan the play.

Kantar’s answer: The danger is that East will winthe first heart and lead a third spade, allowing Westto make the ªJ. There is no recourse if West has ªJ 32, but at least you can protect against J–x.

Cash the ©A at trick three, enter dummy with aclub and discard both remaining spades on the dia-monds. Now lead a heart. If East rises and returns aspade, ruff high and cash the remaining high hearthoping to drop the jack. This play loses if East hasªA J x and is smart enough to play the ace immedi-ately. You can’t have everything.

Insured by MeckwellIt must be nice to have Jeff Meckstroth and Eric

Rodwell as teammates. Most of us can only imaginethe sense of security that it imparts to the other mem-bers of the squad. Take, for example, the followingdeals from the Grand National Teams ChampionshipFlight which was won by the District 9 (Florida) teamof Russ and Sheila Ekeblad, Michael Seamon, MarkMolson and, of course, Meckstroth & Rodwell.

This deal is from the semifinal round against Dis-trict 21 (northern California):

Consider this from declarer’s point of view. Eastleads the ̈ A and switches to a diamond. You playlow from dummy and West inserts the jack. You winthe ace and decide to go all out to make the contractby taking the spade finesse in order to use the «A fora diamond pitch.

Unfortunately West wins the «K, gives East aclub ruff, wins the diamond return and plays an-other club.

So you’re down three. Feel bad? Don’t. You justwon 11 IMPs. How? At the other table your “insur-ance” — the boys from Meckwell — defended thesame contract in the same manner, but they decidedto double declarer first, so they were plus 800.

This hand is from the final against District 17(Southwest). You hold as West, vulnerable against not,

«A J 10 7 5 4 ª10 4 3 ©6 3 ̈ 4 3,and the bidding goes 1̈ on your left, pass from part-ner, 1© on your right. You decide to exercise restraintat these colors and pass quietly. LHO rebids 1ª, part-ner passes again and RHO bids 1«, Alerted as a (pos-sibly) artificial force. Now, let’s say you decide toyield to temptation and double — just to help partnerout in case he’s on lead, mind you, since he needs allthe help he can get.

But things now take an unpleasant turn, as LHOredoubles and this is passed back to you. You sheep-ishly pass and the opponents proceed to make ninetricks without breaking a sweat. Here’s the full lay-out:

Haste makes wasteBy Henry Bethe

It is usually fruitless to ask an expert how to bida freak hand, but occasionally one occurs on whichthe right actions can actually be demonstrated. Onething about bidding freaks “scientifically” is that itusually pays to take things slowly so that the entirepicture can come out.

Friday morning in the top bracket of the Educa-tional Foundation KOs such a hand came up. Our teamgot this one right, but our opponents, Bill Parks - KenChatzinoff of the Philadelphia area and Balusu Rao-Dave Grubbs of greater Seattle, had to get up earlySaturday morning while we could sleep in.

The hand in question is« --ª A J 4 3 2© A K J 8 6 4 3¨ A

Your side is not vulnerable, the opponents are,and the auction started (at both tables) pass by part-ner, pass. What would you open? Even though thehand undoubtedly qualifies both on honor strengthand playing strength, 2̈ is probably wrong since youwill have to rebid 3© and then 4ª, and you are aw-fully high by then. Indeed at both tables this handopened 1©. The next hand overcalls 1«, partner tries2¨ and RHO passes. At both tables this hand nowbid 2ª, 2« on your left, pass, pass back to you.

This is actually quite revealing. Partner has shown10 or more points, but did not bid 2NT, did not double2«, and did not rebid 3̈. So partner should have somelength and some high card strength where you wantit, namely in the red suits. Also, not surprisingly, part-ner doesn’t have real diamond support but doesn’thave four hearts either. Given all this, what wouldyou bid?

At the other table they chose 4ª, which endedthe auction.

3ª, however, drew a raise to game which left thishand in a position to offer a choice of slams by bid-ding 6© next. Partner took the preference to 6ª hold-ing a suitable 10-count:

« J 5 3ª K Q 5© 7 5¨ K J 10 5 3

Notice the effect of going slower and giving your-self more time to find out relevant information. Alsonotice the gain from having it be your bid, notpartner’s, when the auction reached 4ª,

Actually 6© is a better contract, but when heartswere 3-2 and diamonds were not 4-0 offside, 6ª alsomade.

stood out. She became the first female editor for theNational Enquirer, and she climbed the ladder untilshe became senior editor. She became the highest paidfemale editor in the world. She wrote a much-readcolumn entitled “Tales of Courage” which profiledpeople facing crises.

She left her post at the Enquirer in 1989 whenshe married Jim, a radiologist. It still brings tears toJim’s eyes when he remembers viewing Marsha’s x-rays and discovering that the cancer he saw had tohave a fatal outcome.

Marsha was a countess – the Countess of Abruzzi. This title was given to her in recognition of thecouple’s philanthropic efforts in Italy.

One of Sternberg’s favorite memories of his latewife occurred during the world championships inAlbuquerque in 1994. “I had lost in the Rosenblumquarterfinals and had gone to sleep. When I woke up,there was a trophy on the table in our hotel room. Iasked, ‘Marsha, did I win something?’ ‘No,’ she said,‘I won something – the novice Swiss.’’

dates inside each issue of the magazine. This will beperformed using ink-jetting, as will the address la-bel. The advantage is two-fold since members willreceive their point totals every month (instead of ev-ery other month) and the ACBL will save postagecosts since the point confirmation cards don’t haveto be produced or mailed.

Other ACBL publications, such as the productcatalog, can also be telescoped into the new design, further reducing postage costs versus mailing the cata-log separately.

The new Bridge Bulletin will be 64 (full-size)pages long, plus 12 pages of Play Bridge inserted.

There is always risk involved in changing the for-mat of a publication that readers have become accus-tomed to, so the ACBL staff spent several monthscreating a new look that would please the majority ofthe membership. The change to four-color process(use by most national periodicals) and the upgrade toglossy paper will be a giant step up in appearance forthe magazine, and reaction to the sample issue wasstrongly positive.

But if instead of cashing all the clubs you takethe king and ace then run the diamonds to finish indummy, West has to keep two clubs and thus eitherhas to let go of his heart (in which case he getsendplayed with either black suit) or to pitch a spadewinner. Apparently Pesce’s 2« bid steered South awayfrom the killing spade lead. Instead South led the ©5– queen, king, ace. Pesce found this interesting – hedecided South must have led away from the 10. Hecashed the ªA, dropping the jack, and continued thesuit, South winning his king.

South led another trump, apparently to make suredeclarer couldn’t score a spade ruff. Pesce won theª10, cashed the ̈Q and crossed to the ¨K. He thenled the ̈ A, pitching a spade as South ruffed.

South now realized what was happening and leda spade, but it was too late. Pesce won, took a finesseto the ©9 and ruffed a club. He got back to dummywith the ©J and got rid of his other losing spade ondummy’s fifth club. 86.5 matchpoints out of 90.

After Pesce and Atwater were crowned champi-ons, Pesce said that he was happy that their oppo-nents were so set on self destruction.

Georgia Heth and Bob Sievers, the runners-up,enjoyed this deal from the second final session.

(1) Drury.(2) Shows one key card – 1430 convention.When Sievers was able to make a two-level response

to her opening bid, Heth knew they were in slam terri-tory. She didn’t waste any time – she went right toBlackwood. Discovering that her side was off only onekey card, and also at the same learning the club situa-tion from the double, she jumped to the heart slam.

Actually the double of 5̈ backfired. North mightwell have cashed the «A without the double, but hefollowed his partner’s instructions and led a club. Hethand Sievers would have earned 72 matchpoints justfor getting to the slam, but they got another 16 whenthey made the overtrick.

Triple squeezewithout the count

(1) Lebensohl, asking partner to bid 3¨.West led a club to East’s ace, and East switched

to his singleton spade, won in dummy with the king.Molson found out about the diamond situation whenhe cashed the ©K. He switched to a heart, and Eastwas surprised to win the trick with the 6. Anotherclub would have been best for the defense at this point, but East actually returned a trump. Molson took hisace and gave up another heart to East. He fired backanother trump to dummy’s 10, and Molson ruffed aheart. Molson ruffed a club, leaving this position:

Molson led the ©Q, and what could West do? Hecouldn’t throw a spade – both spades would be good.He couldn’t throw a heart – North’s 10 would be good. His only hope was to ditch the ¨K. But Molson wasready for that – he led dummy’s heart to West’s queen, and West had to lead away from his «Q-10 to giveMolson plus 670 on the board. West had been caughtin a triple squeeze without the count.

This was worth 13 IMPs when Eric Rodwell andJeff Meckstroth made 3« at the other table. They werehappy with the plus but a little unhappy they didn’tget to 5̈ .

In the Grand National Teams Flight B, this District 4 squadcame in second: Nick Straguzzi, Barry Cohen, Bill Grosnickand Everett Young.

Georgia Heth and Bob Sievers were runners-up in the RedRibbon Pairs.

By Barry RigalLaurie Kranyak reported that she and her

partner were doing dismally in the Life Mas-ter Pairs semifinals. When the director cameto their table and told them they were aboutto get fined, it hardly mattered.

Apparently in Laurie’s absence, her part-ner and the opponents had muddled the du-plication of a hand. But Laurie was amusedwhen she discovered that it was her son Johnwho had reported the error to the directingstaff.

Sharper than a serpent’s tooth is the in-gratitude of a son.

Kids! You don’tget no respect!

New Life MastersReese House of Washington DC became a Life

Master in the bracketed knockouts, partnered by TedGuthrie of Washington. Another of his teammates –Michael Warchol of Hyattsville MD – advanced toBronze Life Master. His partner was Dick Whittingtonof Hyattsville.

The Wagar Women’s Knockout Teams, whichenters its second day today – is a battle for the WagarTrophy, which honors one of the all-time great play-ers.

Wagar of Atlanta (1902-1990), inducted into theACBL Bridge Hall of Fame in 1999, became LifeMaster #37 in 1943, the fifth woman to earn the rank-ing. Wagar served on the ACBL Board of Directorsfrom 1960 to 1972 and was named ACBL HonoraryMember in 1979. She was non-playing captain of theU.S. World Women’s Teams in 1968 and 1972.

The Stengers weren’t the only ones honored.Tournament Director Millard Nachtwey told hownovice programs became an integral part of Wash-ington area clubs, then sectionals, then Mid-Atlantictournaments, then North American Championships.“Years ago a very innovative lady came up with aplan to get more people into the bridge world,” saidNachtwey. “Edith McMullin finally convinced ourbridge club to try a novice program. Of course every-body knew it wouldn’t work. Imagine everyone’s sur-prise when we had 20 tables the very first time. Even-tually it worked up to 25 or 30 tables.

“Next she went after the people who were incharge of our sectionals. Again nobody thought shewould succeed, but she certainly did. And then shegot intermediate and novice games to be a regularpart of our regionals.

“When she suggested a novice-intermediate pro-gram for the 1984 NABC here, she was told she wasout of her mind. But you know Edith – she just keptbattling until she got the OK. Reasonable turnoutson Saturday and Sunday didn’t impress anyone –those were weekend days. But when 40 tables showedup on Monday, Edith had proved her point. Gamesfor intermediates and novices became a must for allfuture NABCs.”

Charity Sack, McMullin's daughter, said therewas never a dull moment in her mother’s house. “Wehad to do all the usual household tasks, but we alsohad to make boards and caddy. We were very much aproject-based household.”

Sack was inducted into the Goodwill Committeeby Nadine Wood, district director for District 6, laterin the meeting.

McMullin, visibly emotional, thanked everyonefor their backing and good wishes.

Osofsky told of Jim Wood, a long-time Washing-ton enthusiast and worker who was unable to appearbecause of ill health. “He served three terms as presi-dent and was the conscience of the Washington BridgeLeague.” said Osofsky. “He was a maverick but youcould always count on him to be helpful. People nearand far turned to him because he was a true friend ofbridge.”

Osofsky also honored Margot Hennings, chair-person of this tournament. When Hennings took thepodium, she said, “I’ve learned the meaning of good-will -- it means keeping a smile on your face no mat-ter what happens during the tournament.”

She told of a couple of strange things she’sheard this week. At the Partnership Desk -- “I’velost my wife.” “I’ve read the Club and Diamondbooks. Can I play?” “ I have fewer than 50 points.Exactly how many, you ask. Well, about one and ahalf.”.

Among those attending were Goodwill Membersof the Year Tom Gardner (1996) and Kay Afdahl(2002). Also present was Richard Freeman who hasbeen a member of the Goodwill Committee for 43years. Osofsky also introduced Richard Bowling, president of the American Bridge Association. He isthe first ABA president to become a member of theGoodwill Committee.

Osofsky thanked the many people who sent incontributions to the Norman Kay Memorial Fundof the Goodwill Committee. “The $3000 receivedfrom all over the country will enable us to fulfillNorman’s wish that the person selected as GWMember of the Year will receive appropriate trans-portation – most likely airline –plus one day’s on-site housing, food and bridge entries. The moneycollected to date will hopefully fund our next threerecipients.”

Knockout mathematicsHow do you match up 103 teams in knockout

competition to wind up with the manageable numberof 64 for the second day?

Here’s all you have to do. Give the #1 seed a bye.Next have seeds 2-13 play in four-way matches withtwo teams from the middle of the seeds and one fromthe lower end. In each four-way match have two teamsface each other for 32 boards. The two winners arethrough for the day – they’ve qualified for the nextday’s play. The two losers battle each other for 32boards, and the winner advances. That’s 48 teams with36 qualifying.

The remaining 54 play head-to-head matches, setting up 27 more qualifiers.

Add them up – the #1 seed plus 36 from four-way matches plus 27 from head-to-head matches. Thetotal is 64, right?

What about the women where there were 27teams? How do you reduce the field to 16?

Easy. Give the #1 seed a bye. Seeds #2 and #3play in four-ways, so six of the eight advance. Theremaining 18 teams play head-to-head, for nine quali-fiers. That’s one plus six plus nine – that’s 16, right?

Goodwill messageHow pleasant it is to hear a player

call, “Director, please” – instead of ashouted “DIRECTOR!”

Why not extend the same cour-tesy to our caddies? Don’t you think

“Caddy, please” has a rather nice sound?Remember that Washington DC is the first NABC

for some of our players – and it’s also the first NABCfor many of our caddies.

Aileen Osofsky, ChairmanNational Goodwill Committee

41 years ago todayBy Barry Rigal

No, it wasn’t that Sergeant Pepper taughtthe band to play.

41 years ago Jill Levin made her appear-ance on the front page of the WashingtonPost.

Naturally she was not featured playing abridge hand – she was a little young for that.At the time she was 17 days old.

Her parents, Steve Shane and GailGreenberg, decided on a whim to bring her to abridge tournament and they parked her underthe table in a bassinet. An enterprising reportersnapped her picture and published the result-ing photo on the front page of the paper to showwhat odd people bridge players are.

41 years later Jill is hoping to see herpicture on the front page again soon – sheand Sue Picus are members of the #1 seededteam in the Wagar Women’s KnockoutTeams.

We were told that the 0-5, 0-20, 0-50 resultsfrom Saturday evening did not appear in the Sun-day Bulletin. Actually they did, but under the wrongheading. The results are listed under SaturdayEvening 49er Pairs. List E is for 0-50, H for 0-20

and G for 0-5.The results of Saturday’s Senior Pairs were

listed under a heading of Saturday Afternoon Se-nior Pairs. The heading should have been Satur-day Senior Pairs – it was a two-session event.
