President’s Message
Mike Daum
Ireceived the call early Friday morning from the design team atABC TV's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. They were in greatneed for skilled cabinetmakers and woodworkers to complete the
East Setauket project for the Lutz family, who were selected to receivea newly built home that Sunday. I spoke to Ty and Justin about coor-dinating as many members of our group as possible to join togetherfor this enormous community effort already underway, and the wordwas quickly spread. Members Bob Schendorf, Mike Josiah, LarrySchwartz, Bob Urso, Barry Saltzberg, Joe Vanek and his son were allwilling to change their weekend schedule to team up with me to rep-resent the LIWC in action!
We worked in a staged area behind the house called "Artworld", whichwas fashioned in a makeshift shop environment. The design team hada trailer of tools, however we brought our own as well. Larry's tool ofchoice was his trusty multiple-tip screwdriver, and it often came inquite handy, despite my ribbing him about it. Bob Schendorf had hiswell-equipped mobile trailer and had to contain himself a few times astv "extras" helped themselves to his tools as the camera rolled.
We had full access to the house and helped with many of the lastminute details, mingling with the "talent". Bob S. and I stayed on forthe reveal to the family, among 1000 community members and volun-teers. It was time to "move that bus"!
After the show airs in September, we'll be permitted to discuss theprojects we worked on and reveal more pictures. It was a great expe-rience for all of us, and the production team will surely call on us againwhen the next project comes to NY. All I've asked of them is to giveus a bit more notice, so we can show up in full force!
See some of the photos on page seven!!!

have happened last month at the picnic.

There was no formal meeting for the month ofJune, but there was a LIW Picnic! While I wasnot able to attend, rumor has is that the food
from Famous Dave’s was really, really good, and the hotdogs ran out quickly. Mr. Softee was there with somedelicious ice cream and many members brought goodiesfrom home to have and share.
The raffle was a success with a Work Sharp and a LIWoodworking Supply Special Gift Certificate (for$150.00 it was reported) given away as the main prizes. The club did come away with a profit of $23.00 on theraffle.
The club also underwrote the cost of the affair by about$1300.00. Richie Zimmerman later expressed to me thathe was uncomfortable with having to charge everyoneother than members $5.00, including 3 year old children. This was an oversight by the Executive Board and I willbring this up to their attention. We will review theprocess and make sure a process is in place for futurepicnics...(sorry Richie).
As per the LIW By-Laws, the LIW Treasury Bookspassed inspection by Gene Kelly, Daryl Rosenblatt andGary Goldberg.
We should thank those responsible for arranging thepicnic, especially Bob Urso and Joe Bottigliere for secur-ing Famous Dave’s to do the catering.

On May 26, 2010 at 7:10PM, in the absence ofSSOW President Ed Piotrowski, VicePresident Frank Napoli opened the meeting by
welcoming everyone who attended. He encouragedeveryone to purchase raffle tickets and then asked SteveBlakley for a Membership and a Donation report whichwas given and accepted.
Frank also reported that the club still has wood for sale, including wooden eggs, which would be used tonight.
There was not much NEW show and tell this monthbecause members were still working on their Snowmenand their egg faces.
The donations were collected and one interesting trinketwas had.
Bob Urso again suggested a new name for the SSOW;The Mid Island Guild of Wood Carvers. The proposednew name was voted down.
Frank N. then began assisting the members who wereworking on the egg faces. Some members continuedworking on their egg faces.
If you missed this month you can always catch up nextmonth so don’t be disappointed.

The Woodturners met on Thursday, June 10th.Bob Urso was absent so Charlie Felson steppedin to run the meeting. The meeting was called to
order around 7:15 pm.
Old business included mention of the NationalSymposium being held in Hartford, CT June 18th thru20th. Several members indicated that they would beattending.
New business requested volunteers for the LIWWRound Robin on July 7th. Barry and Steve graciouslyvolunteered to demo that night.
There were several very nice projects brought in forShow & Tell. Barry presented a pen turned fromBloodwood, Ebony and Brass which was based on anarticle in Woodturning Design Magazine. He also turneda platter from Sugar Maple. Peter showed his segment-ed bowl with a feature ring of Yellowheart andBloodwood. Jerry turned a sake cup from Paduk to holdChopstick Holders made from Black Palm. Ed showedtwo painted Poplar Vessels and a small bowl from DesertEucalyptus. Charlie turned a Cherry Bowl.
Our feature demonstrator for the evening was CarlSanger from the Long Island Woodturners. He began bytalking about the many aspects of woodturning and thedifferent types of projects that can be made. We saw alovely selection of Carls work, including bowls, plattersand bangle bracelets. His topic for the evening was off-set turning. He began by explaining how to get the bowlto be offset by remounting the piece offcenter. It was acomplicated process which resulted in some very beauti-ful pieces.
Carl's background was in automobile restoration ofwood body automobiles. He then began woodworkingwhich led to his work in woodturning. He shared withus the fact that he turns for the beauty of the wood. Heenjoys working from a log pile and creates a piece bymaximizing the beauty of the wood. Use an irregularpiece of wood and let mother nature guide you in creat-
ing the piece.
Thank you Carl for sharing your knowledge with us. Weenjoyed your demo.
The next meeting for the Woodturners will be Thursday,July 8th and will be a hands on pen turning session. Allare welcome to attend.
