EDITOR’S LETTER

Throughout the long winter nights – and indeed the wintry summer nights – most of us long for heady holidays on the scorching sands of Mediterranean, or further flung, beaches. We lust for the rare sensation of the sun beating

down on our backs and the chance to snooze sporadically while dipping in to both our summer reading and our summer cocktails. But as soon as we get to within a couple of weeks of scurrying off to sunnier climes, the panic inevitably sets in, namely that unique dread of the annual reveal of one’s pallid and paunchy skin.

is year, we’ve resolved not to bow to the horror, and as such have devised a ten-step guide to how to look and feel good in your bathers. From waxing to dance classes, check out our recommendations on p.56. For the more last-minute amongst us, Carole Caplin – lifestyle and fitness guru – advises honing your body on the beach. She gives us her most fun tips for using sun, sea and sand as a personal gym (p.61).

I caught up with one woman who recently swapped her adopted beachside home in Miami for London – albeit only for a fleeting visit. Barbara Hulanicki is the brains behind Biba, an abiding icon of the sixties, but her design genius does not stop at the sartorial. We met to talk about her new fireplaces for Chesney’s, as well as her legacy as a grande dame of that most swinging of decades. Turn to p.47 to read more about this most charming designer, whose flair has garnered her a legion of fans, from Mick Jagger to Bridget Bardot.

No stranger, meanwhile, to celebrity is Alison Jackson. e artist behind the BAFTA-winning Doubletake and a myriad of witty ‘paparazzi’ shots of lookalike A-listers granted us an interview as she prepares to judge the FOTO8 photography competition. Henry Barlow met her to talk about our fascination with images of celebs going about their daily tasks… read more on p.52.

And finally, we take beachside inspiration from our gorgeous fashion shoot – as styled by Charlie Moore – on Martin Summers’ ‘Bluebird of Chelsea’ yacht (p.36). If we can’t get to the beach just yet, we can but dream…

HOUSE OF AMOUAGE e House of Amouage is renowned for drawing inspiration for its perfume from its rich cultural heritage in the Sultanate of Oman. We adore the rich heady fragrances that speak of the exotic, and that their mission is to restore the artistry back to perfumery. FIELD CANDY TENTS Our relationship with camping is ambivalent to say the least (it’s the 3am loo dash in the dark and the mud that usually – and abruptly – quells our initial enthusiasm). But if all tents were this witty and pretty, we could be persuaded to re-consider our misgivings. We especially love Field Candy’s ‘Get A Room’ design shown here, but outdoorsy types can also choose tents printed with watermelon, and bucolic sheep. Happy campers all round. Costelloe confi dentialPaul Costelloe shares his beauty secrets...

I’ve been in Hong Kong this week, where it’s was 40C. No such luck back in London, where we’ve been wearing a weird mixture of summer weights

teamed with uncomfortable winter jackets. is month we’re focusing on health

and beauty. As a regular cyclist I anticipate that there is going to be a big increase in ‘unqualifi ed’ cyclists taking to the road, once the Olympic travel lanes are enforced. Just remember a slow cyclist is as dangerous on the road as a slow motorist! Keeping up at a steady speed requires a certain level of fi tness. So ditch those doughnuts, because we only have three weeks left, and soon it will be the only stress-free mode of travel!

Most important after fi tness is looking fi t. ere’s still a small percentage of men who refuse to groom; there’s no excuse anymore. I’m a fan of the Liz Earle male grooming products (uk.lizearle.com), particularly the sensitive shave cream and the after-shave moisturiser. ey are simple and full of botanical goodness. is, combined with a nice, fresh Paul Costelloe shirt will do the business. I went along to one of my younger son’s cricket matches recently, and was struck by how they all appeared like something from a fashion shoot. is is the look you should aim for.

Not forgetting the girls. My wife is obsessed with Acqua di Parma body cream (acquadiparma.it). It just smells of Italy. is combined with a pair of perfectly manicured feet is all you need. For my S/S12 collection we used Nice is Nice by Essie. It was the perfect shade of lilac and very directional for this season. paulcostelloe.com

BOUTIQUE-IN-BRIEF BUTLER AND WILSON189 FULHAM ROAD, SW3; BUTLERANDWILSON.CO.UK

THE IDEA: It all began in 1969 when Nicky Butler and Simon Wilson had the idea of bringing fl amboyance and fun to fashion via an Aladdin’s cave of colourful costume jewellery and playful, vintage-inspired pieces at aff ordable prices.

THE USP: ere’s nowhere quite like it. From the fl apper dresses in the window to the surfeit of bling, it makes even the most serious fashionista feel like a child in a sweet shop.

THE BUY:Outsized fl owery crystal and semi-precious necklaces, quirky one-off earring (in the shape of crystal shoes, anyone) and knuckleduster skull rings.

PHILIPPA LEPLEY Q&A FULHAM_v2.indd 17 28/06/2012 23:00

Page 18: July 2012

You’ve been based on the Fulham Road for over twenty years. What is it about the area that keeps you here?Well, I love Chelsea and Fulham and feel very at home here. It’s young, happening and thriving. Our Fulham Road store has given me the opportunity to really design the most beautiful, special dresses because our clientele is so international; people from literally all over the world pop into our shop, all with diff erent ideas and expectations. It is fascinating and a joy to look after so many diff erent requirements. Where do you go locally when you’re in need of inspiration?I’m really inspired by Conran’s fl agship store in the Michelin building. I always walk out feeling uplifted. ey have a clever team and its forever evolving with new displays, ideas and products. Hugely innovative. A fi rm favourite of mine is also Petersham Nurseries in Ham; I’m never disappointed with their baking or the styling of their shop alongside their Michelin-starred restaurant. Great antiques and style and such a great idea popping it all together. What advice would you give brides-to-be when it comes to picking a dress?Feel yourself, go with your gut instinct and be comfortable. Look deeply at the cut and balance of the dress, make sure it is accentuating your best bits. Don’t go to too many stores and get confused and make it a chore. Always remember: it’s meant to be a special, enjoyable experience for all the right reasons, don’t stress! Don’t take too many people with you, as too many opinions can be tricky sometimes! What bridal trends do you think we will see this year? ere is defi nitely an increasing trend for covering up – more sleeves and straps. e strapless dress is less popular. Lace is still big. I just love fairytale frocks, and all I want to see is happy brides in the right dress that is tailored to fi t immaculately. It’s becoming very popular to add and take off bits throughout the day, creating simple diff erent but surprise looks. I love veils – particularly long silk tulle ones. Every bride should wear a veil as it softens and

fi nishes the whole look. More and more girls are going for our embellished veils. We do make the most stunning embroidered veils, if I may say so! Do you think that brides should attempt to recycle their dresses or do you think of a wedding dress as a once-in-a-lifetime piece, not be worn again? I always say to our brides: ‘Don’t choose your dress thinking that you may wear it again because it’s more than likely you won’t!’ It really is a once-in-a-lifetime purchase. If you are having a couture gown made bespoke with us it is an extremely special journey with many fi ttings to relish. You design clothing for very formal occasions. Have you ever wanted to design a ready-to-wear line?I just love designing anything, from birthday cards to cakes. Making and designing is in my fi ngers! So yes, I would love to design ready-to-wear. What do you wear day-to-day? Do you have any favourite local designers? For work I wear a lot of simple silk shifts that my studio has made for me, paired with simple cashmere cardigans. Black is very easy and

smart. I’m not a huge shopper as time is always short. I do keep my clothes a long time and look after them. Jeeves in Chelsea takes care of my silk dresses beautifully. I may pop into Ralph Lauren or Joseph on the Fulham Road if I have 10 minutes to spare. I do love Sloane Street too. For relaxing, I’m a huge fan of white trousers, and I love Zadig and Voltaire long-sleeve tops and Petit Bateau white vest tops, teamed with a pair of converses. What’s your opinion on dressing bridesmaids? Do you prefer a uniform look or individual outfi ts for each person? I really think one needs to get the design right for each individual. Each body shape varies and normally the same style is not going to work perfectly on everyone. Naturally it’s good to have a theme running through – maybe the colour – but then cut the dresses according to each bridesmaid’s shape. I really like

very neutral colours in soft long fl owing fabrics for grown-up bridesmaids. Children can be fairytale fairies in froth. Who would you say is your favourite bride from history, and who would be your dream bride to dress?I absolutely love Grace Kelly in her wedding dress and always have done. Dream bride? Well we recently missed the opportunity to dress everyone’s dream bride I suppose – and may I say how beautiful she looked. I think all brides are dreamy… each individual we look after is so special, we cherish all and we love what we do. Each bride is so diff erent and each dress becomes bespoke for them. It really is wonderful being able to make each dress so right for each person. Are there any locally based wedding related shops – e.g. fl orists, bakers or venues – that you recommend to your clients?Mary Jane Vaughan, Fast Flowers, Jeeves for dry cleaning, e Little Venice Cake Company, and for shoes Freya Rose.

SCULPT YOUR BODY SLIM IN SIX WEEKSLouise Parker and her dedicated team are ready to bust your body into shape for spring

THE INTENSIVE PERSONAL TRAINING PROGRAMME was devised by celebrity trainer Louise

Parker over 12 years ago and has since changed the body shape of hundreds of individuals. Her experience ranges from helping clients recover from long-term obesity, to taking care of some of the most beautiful bodies in the world.

e unique programme combines six hours a week of her exercise method, alongside a rigorous dietary overhaul, for a six-week period. “Each week we train you in four 90-minute sessions in the comfort of your own home – bringing the gym to you and saving precious time,” says Louise. “Some clients choose to do three 90-minute sessions over an eight-week period and the results are still exceptional.”

e Intensive employs exercise and diet methods that radically shift body fat and totally re-sculpt the body, without compromising metabolism. “It’s so important to teach our clients how to boost their metabolism so that once they have lost the weight they can easily keep it off,” she notes. “So many diets will get the weight off but your metabolism will come to a grinding halt or they are just not sustainable.” e programme’s emphasis on resistance work and an intelligent eating plan ensure the results that clients achieve are long lasting and, most of all, easy to maintain. “No aspect of what we do is

extreme,” she explains. “Every element of the plan is sensible, researched and proven to work. But what we do is put it all together to create massive transformations in our clients’ bodies and lifestyles.

“My team are world class and without doubt some of the best in the country. Most come from a Sports Science background and we have two Olympic athletes amongst us. We all share a friendly, no-nonsense approach and between us we offer an unrivalled service to our clients. I’m hugely proud to have such a talented and committed team behind me.”

Louise Parker believes anyone can have a fantastic body – regardless of age, body type and starting point: “By following my method, you really will be blown away by how you can change your body shape, overall fitness and exceed your own expectations.”

Her programme is suitable for anyone wanting exceptional results, in record time. e Intensive is hugely popular with clients needing to be what she calls ‘red-carpet ready’ – whether that’s for a wedding, new job-role or even the school run. “I love helping post-natal mums,” she explains. “Since I had my daughters in quick succession, I fully understand the challenges new mothers are faced

with, and what has to be done to return you to your former glory.”

Louise Parker designs each programme with one of her team before the programme commences, based on the individual’s requirements and deadlines. A rigid, yet balanced food plan is devised, ensuring optimal results. Louise personally monitors your diet diary on a daily basis to ensure you are on the right track and that you get all the support and motivation you need to succeed. In six weeks, you will emerge looking better than you thought you ever could. What Louise Parker does

isn’t gimmicky, it is instead an intelligent combination of three factors – nutrition, training and lifestyle – delivered in just the right combination. “Providing you have made the

decision to change and are willing to let us guide you,” she asserts, “You simply cannot fail – clients routinely drop two dress sizes on the Intensive.”

ere are many bespoke programmes available, and following a telephone consultation, Louise will advise a suitable programme and schedule to suit any objective, lifestyle and budget. Louise asks that new clients commit to a minimum of three hours per week to ensure that they achieve amazing results.

Celebrity journalist turned shamen Anna Hunt explains why the ancient art of healing is today’s answer to yoga

The

versesShamanicenvironmental crises) leaves everyone on edge, trying to make sense of where we fi t. Cue a shift in our defi nition of success from the aggressive pursuit of wealth and status, to living well, in harmony with the environment and with ourselves. Which is where shamanism comes in.

Einstein’s formula E=mc2 confi rms what shamans have always known – that everything with mass/form, from a person to a plant to a thought, consists of energy. It follows that if you can move energy, you can alter life. Using a range of techniques including acupressure, visualisation, herbs, plant medicines (including the mythical

During recent fi lming of a remake of e Lone Ranger in New Mexico, Johnny Depp accepted an invitation to become an

honorary member of a Navajo Indian tribe. It’s incredibly rare for tribal elders to extend such an off er and yet the Hollywood star is not alone in his interest in indigenous tribes and their spiritual traditions. Robbie Williams, Owen Wilson, Sheryl Crow, Tori Amos, Sting and Yoko Ono are among a host of celebrities who have referred to the importance of shamanic healers in their lives as a route to emotional stability, inner peace and enhanced physical health. And the red carpet treatment before this year’s Oscars was ‘reconnective healing,’ a shamanic technique.

Where celebrities lead, we follow, and shamanism is on the cusp of going mainstream, set to become to the tweenies what yoga was to the nineties. Today’s global mood (defi ned by the economic and

hallucinogens, ayahuasca), crystals and sound, a shamen assists by moving energy, thereby alleviating emotional distress and physical challenges. Europe’s indigenous shamanic traditions were stamped out during the Inquisition, but among the Navajo and in South America these arts have been passed down the generations from shaman to chosen apprentice in strict secrecy for 40,000 years.

e Shaman In Stilettos, the English version of Eat Pray Love, describes my experiences having been chosen as such an apprentice. I was a 29-year-old Cambridge graduate, leading a glam but stressful life as a celebrity interviewer for a national newspaper,

who fl ed to the untouched wilderness of the Amazon rainforest where I spent months drinking one of the most potent hallucinogenic drugs in a bid to fi nd inner peace and being apprenticed with Maximo Morales, a sexy and sophisticated shaman. Today, though I continue to write for e Daily Mail, I spend the majority of my time

working as a shaman leading international retreats, workshops and one-on-one consultations, distilling the best of shamanic techniques and making them relevant for 21st-century professionals.

BLUE PLAQUE OF THE MONTH… ROBERT FALCON SCOTT, 56 OAKLEY STREET, SW3When not roaming the streets of Chelsea, Robert Falcon Scott – posthumously known as Scott of the Antarctic – was exploring nature at its most hostile in the polar regions. e former naval officer made his name with the 1901-04 ‘Discovery’ expedition, but met his demise during the ill-fated ‘Terra Nova’ South Pole mission in 1912; in subsequent years, he has become a figure of controversy, held culpable by some for the fate of his party of five men who died of extreme cold, exhaustion and starvation on the return journey, after they were pipped to the South Pole post by Roald Amunden’s Norwegian team.

VINTAGE GEMSShopping vintage – as opposed to ‘second hand’ – has graduated over the past decade from the being the last word in cool, practiced mainly by the achingly hip brigade, to a mainstream mode of buying clothes. e question always hovers over one’s purchase, however, as to whether one is paying a premium for what, 15 years ago, would have been classified as junk. Enter then Andrew Whittaker, the author of Secondhand and Vintage London (part of a series covering various European cities). He has sifted London’s shops and markets and gives us the lowdown on where to buy the best of everything, from books to clothes, music to memorabilia. £8.95, Vivays

CultureFlashTHIS MONTH’S HIGHLIGHTS

SISTER SISTERMark Duplass, Rosemarie DeWitt and Emily Blunt star in Your Sister’s Sister, Lynn Shelton’s romantically comic tale of the complex relationship between siblings – and those who enter their world. Duplass plays Jack, who accepts an invitation from Iris (Blunt) to stay at her family’s island cottage following the death of his brother. His stay accidentally coincides with that of Iris’ older sister Hannah (DeWitt), who is similarly recovering, only in her case, from breaking up with a girlfriend of seven years. An unlikely night of passion ensues… along with the repercussions of the clandestine night. Funny, engaging and endearing. In cinemas from 29 June.

WEIRD SCIENCEe scientist Stephen Emmott teams up with theatre director Katie Mitchell to lead a ground-breaking kind of environmental lecture. Ten Billion – whose title

refers to the world’s population, which has doubled in 25 years – paints a tableau of a species with its head planted firmly in the sand when it comes to its impact on the natural world. 12 – 18 July & 31 – 11 Aug; royalcourttheatre.com

Barbara Hulanicki carved out iconic status in the 1960s as the woman behind Biba. Now she turns her hand to fireplaces in a collaboration with Chesney’s. Nancy Alsop meets one very charming trailblazer

BARBARA HULANICKI.indd 44 28/06/2012 15:54

Page 45: July 2012

Barbara Hulanicki is nothing if not instantly identifiable in a crowd. e deep tan, the blonde bobbed barnet, the rarely removed dark

glasses… she cuts a conspicuously chic figure. All of which makes a certain sense, given that as the woman who conceived of Biba – along with Mary Quant’s mini-skirts and the master cutter Ossie Clark’s ethereally romantic frocks, the defining icon of sixties fashion – one expects her to radiate transcending cool. What is less predictable, though, is the total absence of the oft-attendant brittle hauteur associated with the fashion elite. Hulanicki is nothing if not warm, natural and, above all, giggly. As one of this year’s recipients of an OBE, she talks not only of being thrilled and proud (‘especially for my father and the Polish contingent’) but also of how comic the whole experience was. Prince Charles, bestower of her Order of the British Empire? ‘Terribly funny.’ e staff at Buckingham Palace? ‘All hilarious.’

But then what is instantly clear is that about Hulanicki, there is little of the precious. We are here to talk about the two fireplaces she has designed for Chesney’s (more of which later) but firstly I venture, apologetically and pre-empting her fatigue at talking about it, the obligatory question about the legacy of Biba. Cue more giggles. ‘is is why I live in America! No one knows what Biba is. ey all pronounce it Byba,’ she hoots. ‘But it is nice to come back to England and to have people remember it fondly.’ She is, she tells me, still amazed at the force of nostalgia that continues to surround the shop, whose label still exists, but no longer with any input from Hulanicki. ‘I have to tell you, when we were running the shop, we had no idea how popular it was because we had nothing but complaints! I remember a woman approaching me in Knightsbridge when the shop had just closed, saying: ‘But what are we going to do now?’ It was the first time we really knew anyone actually liked what we did. Now, it’s really nice being in England because people are so nostalgic, it’s lovely. I think it has to do with the last war and how people came together…’ she muses, recalling: ‘I remember when I first moved to here, we couldn’t believe it. You were allowed one egg and two ounces of cheese a week. Can you imagine? You could devour that before breakfast!’

Nouveau watercolours. Does that period then, I wonder, hold a dual resonance for her? ‘Oh yes. But the funny thing was that my mother – who was quite a bit younger than my father – said that while growing up, his family used to laugh at him, because they seemed so modern. It’s strange to think.’ Does she still have any of his work? ‘No, I have lost them all, which is so sad, because they really were so beautiful. But when you’ve been around as long as me, you have to be careful not to become like Steptoe – things can get rather cluttered! Of course now, you can at least photograph things and

store them – that is, if you don’t mess up your computer. I am hopeless!’

It is easy to imagine that – given her life lived so fully – much clutter could have accumulated. Far from having faded in to obscurity after the closure of Biba, she moved – at the tailend of the 1980s – to Miami, commissioned by Ronnie Wood to restore a dilapidated building in a wonderful, derelict Art Deco area. ‘He told me it would take six months… which turned into two years… which turned into twenty!’ After that she acquired another high profile client, in the

ese days Hulanicki lives in Miami Beach, but continues to make her monthly trip to London to keep her eye on the myriad of projects which bear her name, amongst them collaborations with TopShop, George at Asda and TK Maxx, bearing out her long-time championing of the democratisation of luxury. Does she enjoy, I wonder aloud, her latter day role as design fairy godmother, as opposed to running the whole show? ‘Oh god yes! In fact the problem was never the running of the shop, it was the manufacturing side. But my husband [with whom Hulanicki ran Biba] loved it, so he did all that. I’ve always let other people take care of that side of things.’

Today she is cast in the role of fireplace designer for the luxury brand Chesney’s. Her contributions? e unambiguously titled and the unambiguously beautiful ‘Art Deco’ and the ‘Art Nouveau.’ What is it, I ask, that she find so compelling in both movements? ‘Both periods are so strong however you translate them. Everything is so hard now, so it’s appealing to look back at these more romantic aesthetics.’ Originally a fashion illustrator for the likes of Vogue and Women’s Wear Daily, Hulanicki inherited at least in part some of her prodigious talent from her father, who, as a child, she would watch producing Art

form of Chris Blackwell of Island Records, who bought 10 buildings on the sea front for Hulanicki to work her magic on – and for which she even scooped an American Institute of Architects award. ‘Yes,’ she laughs, ‘but the Preservation Society banned me! Chris said to me: ‘I know it’s Art Deco but I want Jamaican colours!’ So that’s what I did!’

About America, she is effusive in almost every regard – but when it comes to fashion her heart remains staunchly on this side of the pond. ‘Here people are individual and eccentric and they are not frightened

what people think. One example is Ascot. I couldn’t stop laughing at the papers yesterday, and all the wacky hats – and I thought they were now supposed to go through

a vetting system if the hats were stupid! It’s so brilliant! In America, people wouldn’t dare. I have 30-year-olds in my office who say: ‘Are you really going to do that? But everything is going in this direction.’ I say: ‘We make the direction!’ I love people like Helena Bonham Carter. She is wonderful. America is in the box when it comes to fashion, and England is definitely out of the box.’ e latter of which could neatly apply to Barbara Hulanicki, truly one of the nicest women in fashion.

Bowler hats to Mohawk barnets, beggars and buskers to red buses; as the capital dons its Olympian hat, Tate Britain puts

the spotlight firmly on city life from 1930 to 1980. ‘Another London’ captures the streetscape in that formative half century, bringing together photographic social documentation from the iconic likes of Robert Frank, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Eve Arnold to lesser-known but no less fascinating talents. Shot all around the city, the thematic link between all the images? e personalities that radiate through the pictures – from the gathered crowd’s at George V’s coronation to the Portobello stall vendors, the urban poor to the punks who owned the streets in the 1970s. ‘Another London’ runs from 27 July – 16 Sept; tickets cost £10, book via tate.org.uk

CandidcameraAlison Jackson’s ‘paparazzi’ images revealing lookalike A-listers at intimate moments ask questions about our strange fascination with celebrity. Henry Barlow meets the woman behind the pictures

ALISON JACKSON.indd 52 28/06/2012 22:27

Page 53: July 2012

As I approach artist and fi lmmaker Alison Jackson’s Soho gallery, I feel faintly terrifi ed. Her enviable

reputation as the brains behind the brilliant BAFTA-winning TV series Double Take and countless carefully posed photographs that appear to show ‘the real story’ of celebrity lives behind closed doors preceded her, but I had heard whispers that along with her talent and success came a reputation for not suff ering fools gladly. Although I try not to think of myself as foolish, Jackson’s satirical thrust is often aimed at journalism’s lazier areas (her website is a dead-on parody of the increasingly tacky Daily Mail sidebar) and a 20-minute wait, even while her assistants assured me ‘Alison will be here any second’, did little to assuage my fears.

Eventually Jackson appears, a commanding fi gure in dominatrix-style black with imposing sunglasses. Within seconds, she’d checked the rushes for her new TV pilot, barked out orders to some

factotum (‘He’s supposed to be an editor, so he should edit!’) and sent me downstairs to look at some more of her witty images, which appeared to show ‘Mick Jagger’ getting a collagen injection in his lips and an already notorious picture of ‘Tony Blair’ giving ‘George Bush’ a lift onto his horse, by off ering him his back.

After a few moments, Jackson reappears, and suggests that we go next door to a café. As we leave, her demeanour changes. She’s still fi ercely engaged and intellectually vital company, but I start to feel less like an errant schoolboy in the presence of the headmistress. We’ve met, at least in part, to discuss Jackson’s new role as one of the judges on a major photography competition, the FOTO8 Summershow. e idea behind this is to encourage anyone, whether an amateur with an iPhone or a professional with top-of-the-range equipment, to enter; the only criteria is that the image has to be something truly special and appealing. Asked what she’s looking for, Jackson

image is constructed, and whether someone without formal training is capable of it. I’ve seen great images taken on the fly, and some of the glossy, expensive stuff in the magazines looks very cheap and garish in comparison to it.’

Jackson’s recent exhibition, ‘Jubilee’, offered a timely series of images of the Royal Family in apparently compromising positions, whether it’s ‘Prince Philip’ looking attentively at naked photographs of Marilyn Monroe or ‘Prince William’ and ‘Kate Middleton’ doing the conga at their wedding. e pictures show her

responds: ‘I’m fascinated by the way images are constructed within the frame, whether you’re professional or untrained, and how pictures engage the viewer. I love the idea that anyone can take part, and I’m fascinated by how good they can be. Someone can take a great photo with a phone now, and in fact I’ve just filmed my new TV series on an iPad. I’ve spent my own career trying to make my photos look like snatched paparazzi pictures caught on an iPhone, and the easiest way to do so is to use an iPhone, rather than spending a fortune on digital editing.’

For all the democratic basis of the competition, Jackson is brisk about what she perceives to be the English attitude that anyone can take a photograph and that it’s not really a skill. ‘It’s not true. Of course basic technical competence is now more of a given, but I’m interested in how an

usual keen eye for a witty juxtaposition, as well as some strangely poignant images of ‘e Queen’ passing the betting shop, corgis in hand. When asked whether she’s a royalist, Jackson pauses and smiles, saying: ‘I think that the royals have been

tremendously good for business. e ‘Jubilee’ show was a comment on the royal family over the past decade, and what I’ve tried to do was offer a Hogarthian eye on the strangeness and lavishness of it all. We’re passionate about them as a family, whether we love or hate them, and they

are great figureheads, with e Queen as a superb role model for women.’

Of course, Jackson’s interest is in the strange, twisted world of celebrity and those who inhabit it, and she has some superb anecdotes, especially about when she’s approached random strangers and offered sometimes unflattering comparisons.

‘I once went up to a familiar-looking man and said: ‘Excuse me,

you look just like Nicolas Cage.’ Unfortunately, it was Nicolas Cage,

and he wasn’t very pleased with me’

(‘I once went up to a familiar-looking man and said: ‘Excuse me, you look just like Nicolas Cage.’ Unfortunately, it was Nicolas Cage, and he wasn’t very pleased with me.’) While her own high public profi le means that she is no stranger to fi rst nights and red carpets, she is able to maintain a sense of distance from its excesses. ‘What I don’t understand is why people want to look at photographs of the famous not doing anything.’ She suggests that it was Diana who began the vogue for individuals selling huge quantities of newspapers and magazines, and indeed her degree show at RCA, which made her name, featured notorious mocked-up pictures of Diana, Dodi and their fi ctitious child together.

Jackson’s about to make her directorial fi lm debut imminently, which she is tight-lipped about, except to confi rm that it will be shot in a mock-documentary style. However, she’s pessimistic about the world of cinema, saying: ‘People are less interested in craft, meaning that anyone can be an actress now.’ She soon warms to her theme. ‘Fame isn’t earned through talent any more, it’s awarded

arbitrarily, so we end up with people like Katie Price. But we want them to suff er, and to diet, and to leap through hoops. We get bad actors as politicians too, like Tony Blair. He had to try hard to seem sincere, and it never quite convinced.’ Cameron hasn’t yet had the treatment – ‘but I’ve just found a great lookalike, so watch this space.’

Over the course of an hour or so, Jackson proves to be witty and both interested and interesting, belying her self-deprecating comment that ‘I don’t consider myself a humorous person.’ Asked what she’s up to next, she sighs and comes out with a staggering list of commissions and collaborations for major companies, the likes of which would make most ordinary mortals quake in fear. How long will this take, I wonder aloud. Five years? Ten?

‘All will be done by this time next year. And then I’ll do it all over again.’ As she says this, I’m sure that there’s just the tiniest glint of a mischief-maker’s glee visible underneath her calm, professional and polished exterior.

1 KAFFIR LIME REINVIGORATING RITUAL AT USHVANI For an invigorating yet indulgent

way to prep the skin for beach, look no further than this new scrub ritual, which harnesses the power of this most bitter Asian fruit to slough away dead skin cells. Kaffir lime is traditionally used in herbal remedies to aid digestion but Ushvani uses its body benefits topically. After a full consultation, my therapist scrubs my tired skin, bringing it slowly back to life. I then use a traditional Coconut Milk Mandi (akin to a large ladle) in a rainforest shower to lather on warm moisturising coconut milk. What followed? Just the best deep tissue massage I’ve ever had, focusing on my back, stomach and feet. I emereged so relaxed I barely need the beach… Ushvani, 1 Cadogan Gardens, Knightsbridge, SW3; ushvani.com

2 FLAMENCO AT DANCE ATTIC We can’t get enough of Dance Attic’s Monday evening Flamenco classes – if only as a legitimate

excuse to stamp our feet after a stressful day. ey also happen to be an excellent way of getting the blood pumping and thus toning up for the beach. It helps that they help us to channel our inner senorita via the throwing of seriously sultry shapes. Olé! 368 North End Road, SW6; danceattic.com

3 MANI-PEDI AT CHELSEA DAY SPA Sashaying down the King’s Road with freshly painted nails equates to one of those rare moments of

polish when we can actually relate to Carrie Bradshaw (minus the vertiginous heels and laundry list of dashing men we’re apt to bump in to). Refine your look with an appositely named New York mani-pedi at Chelsea Day Spa. After having had my cuticles prepped, and dry skin banished, the colour was applied with expert precision. Ten days on, there was not a chip in sight, making it an excellent pre-holiday option. 69a King’s Road, SW3; thechelseadayspa.co.uk

7 FAT GIRL SLIM AT BLISS When it comes to pre-holiday grooming, this super slick bolthole is nailing it. A one-stop shop for all

things body beautifying, it’s cellulite’s most feared enemy. Plump for the FatGirlSlim treatment – a detoxifying circulation-stimulating godsend which pummels away any wobbly bits. Beginning with dry brushing, a firming grapefruit essential oil is then applied before the body is whipped into shape by a seaweed task mask, a heated wrap, and finally a rubdown with the waist-whittling Love Handler. 8 HIGHLIGHTS AT NEVILLE What good is a tan without

golden highlights with which to set it off? To this end, I took my chlorine-infused, shamefully two-tone hair to the delicious surrounds of Neville, and submitted to the expert attentions of top hair colourist

Shelley, charged with the onerous task of imparting to my head the timely Olympic five rings of colour. Cue slight panic (there had been mention of the word ‘silver’) but Shelley reassures that with my naturally darker complexion, we’d be swerving more towards warmer tones. is is the beauty of Neville; everything is tailored exactly to the needs of each client’s hair – which is why they do so roaringly successfully with repeat (and often celebrity) business. I emerge with a halo of highlights which are perfectly placed and brilliantly natural-looking. Now for the tan... 5 Pont Street, SW1X; nevillehairandbeauty.net

Last month’s terrible weather has made many of us who were planning to spend the summer in the UK look for a last-minute holiday fi x. ough that

means no time to hone the perfect body for the beach, it certainly isn’t too late to get into great shape for your return.

e beach is a fantastic place to work out (ever wondered why lifeguards look so fi t?). Sand’s natural instability forces the muscles of the spine, hips, legs and ankles to work a lot harder than they would doing the equivalent exercise on grass or hard surfaces. e more muscles work, the more calories are burned – and because sand is soft, there’s less impact on the joints, which reduces the chance of injury.

Taking a brisk walk or run on fi rm sand is a great, low impact way to work the whole body – and to get beautifully soft feet too. As you get fi tter, try softer sand. Alternatively, wade into the water up to just above the knee height and walk with a wide stride, superb for toning all the leg muscles and involving your abs. Swing your arms for extra momentum. Swimming in the sea is even more benefi cial than laps in the pool – not only do waves provide a greater challenge for the muscles but sea water is a natural exfoliant and detoxifi er.

Back on the beach: why not gather up fellow holiday makers for some ball games? Beach football, touch rugby or cricket are fun ways to strengthen the lower body whilst tennis, badminton or volley ball will enhance your balance and upper body tone. ese games improve cardiovascular fi tness and the twisting movements as you play will do more for your abs than endless sit-ups – and so much less tediously too.

If you really want to make your beach into a gym, try the following circuit: warm up doing some lying down static stretches for your hamstrings and quads followed by jogging for 3-5 minutes; perform 12 squats, followed by a 20m sprint, 10-20 press ups (from the knees for beginners) and 10-40 reverse abdominal crunches (keeping your belly button pulled in) followed by 10 side bridges holding for between 2-10 seconds; complete the circuit with a short 10-20m swim in the sea. Rest for a few minutes and repeat the circuit two to four times. Finish off with lying and sitting stretches.

To book a fi tness session with Carole Caplin visit coolhealth.co.uk or bowskillclinic.com

BeautifulDon’t fret about getting the perfect pre-beach body, get a body on the beach, advises fi tness guru Carole Caplin

Top tips• Gradually build your activity level up. Don’t go out on day one for a 2km run if you are used to sitting on an exercise

bike for 20 minutes once a week.

• Drink plenty of water to maintain hydration throughout and keep your head covered, even if your skin has

acclimatised to the sun. Perform any static exercises in the shade.

• Stretch before and after your activities in order to avoid the muscles shortening. Muscles can progressively

shorten due to increased levels of activity.

• Always swim or perform water activities in sight of a lifeguard,

regardless of how profi cient you are in the water.

• Dry skin brush daily before a shower/bath to stimulate circulation and bowels followed by applying Clarins Anti-Eau body oil to disperse water retention.

• Your appetite naturally lessens in the sun. Take advantage and eat

light: plenty of fi sh, chicken, salads and vegetables, with a piece of fruit

between meals. Try and stay away from the confectionary area of the breakfast buffet. They usually do a mean menu of egg dishes abroad which will work

particularly well with exercise.

• And fi nally, the extra hit of oxygen from constantly being outdoors

alongside the increased sunlight- induced vitamin D, exercise and sea

water will encourage your whole system to relax so don’t resist the need to fall

in and out of sleep throughout the day.

RETAILER OF THE MONTHLAPICIDANatural stone specialist Lapicida has just opened its sumptuous new fl agship showroom on the prestigious King’s Road. With a theatrical lighting scheme courtesy of Chelsea-based John Cullen Lighting, what was once an industrial space has been transformed into a luxurious 5,000-sqft environment comprised completely of stone; the walls, fl oor, ceiling, cladding and even one-off artworks. 533 King’s Road, SW10; lapicida.com

CASE STUDY PAPER PROJECT SKYLIGHT e owners of this beautiful home in Belgravia wanted to replace an existing glass lantern skylight over the basement living room with one that could be used as an ad-hoc terrace. e solution, devised by SW-based Paper Project Architecture & Design studio, was a deceptively simple one that’s visually appealing and conspicuous. Comprised of a single piece of walk-on glass with a stainless steel perimeter gutter, the playful shape invites guests onto this surprise outdoor space and fl oods the basement with natural light. paperproject.co.uk

Crafted by Berlin-based design trio e27, the LOLL table, inspired by the notion of stretching metal from 2D into 3D, has recently won the Interior Innovation Award 2012. £163; pulpoproducts.com

THE LIBRARYBooks have long since represented one of my greatest passions and greatest pleasures in life; collecting 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century tomes really gets me going. So when I was asked, therefore, to take on an exciting project to design an entire library for a house in Eaton Square, the books themselves made for the most natural and fitting starting point. In fact, the extraordinary and extensive collection I was working with astonishingly only made up part of a much larger compendium which belonged to my client’s father in the US – a nice story, I thought, for something which represented so much history already. My idea was to place mirrors behind each column and this really helped bounce the light back around the room, but ultimately made the space look much bigger. It worked beautifully. e entire library is made in beautiful English walnut, which took seven months to make and one week to fit with exact precision.

Designer Tim Gosling’s room-by-room style guide to creating the ideal home

THE ENTRANCE HALLMaking an entrance is crucial. I believe it’s one of the most important things you can create and design in a house; after all, it sets the tone in much the same way an orchestra does as it strikes up before the curtain rises ahead of a musical or a play. In this particular example, I’ve achieved the ‘entrance’ effect with a stunning rosewood console table with bone inlay and silver leaf glass. It beautifully helps bounce light off its back which also cleverly helps it continue the motif from the floor beneath.

THE SITTING ROOMe low table is the drawing room’s biggest issue; it’s the elephant in the room. ankfully, however, we’ve moved on from the days of the prevalent poorly-made ethnic centre piece and we’re seeing a move towards a collector’s cabinet where one can store books, glass or sculpture. Here, I have designed a table to fit a massive and

staggeringly beautiful rock crystal piece. e inside is lined with white suede and the band just under the top is created with polished chrome, which takes the weight out, making it look like the top is floating.

THE BEDROOMCreating a room-within-a-room, especially when it comes to bedrooms, is always wonderful. e higher the bed, the better; after all, it’s the height that ultimately provides a sense of security. I like to give a bed a tree-house feeling, as though someone is climbing into a private space. In this particular example, I took the four poster right to the ceiling (13ft). I deeply sunk the picture into the part of the wall where the bed-head rests, just so I could ensure light around it. One of the most important elements in a bedroom is its lighting – it is, in my view, what creates romance. Visit tgosling.com for more of Tim Gosling’s designs

Top 3 Style Tips

1. Pre-plan the scale of your rooms before you do anything else.

2. Always buy a sample pot of paint and do a tester before you invest in a huge order. You never know how it will look on the walls.

3. Buy the best quality you can afford, even if this means things are ordered in stages. You will be much happier in the long run.

Did you always want to be a chef?Yes I knew from the age of 12, but back then it still was considered to be one of the lowest things a man could aspire to. So I decided to be fairly crafty about it, and realising Norwich had a very good catering college, I rang them up, discovered I didn’t need any qualifi cations, so coasted the next three years of school, much to my parents’ horror.

Culinary heroes?Joel Rubucheon and Pierre Koff mann.

Meal that changed your life?It was one that I had at La Tante Claire, after I had just left there. I went to see Pierre now and again to say ‘hi’, as I just loved

that place and seeing him in the kitchen was brilliant. While I was with him, his suppliers would often turn up and he would feed them sometimes, something from the lunch menu. On one particular occasion, he asked if I would stay for lunch. I thought that I might be off ered something in the kitchen from the lunch menu, but instead he insisted that I go into the main restaurant and that he would cook something especially for me. In those days jackets, shirts and ties were required and I was wearing jeans, a T-shirt and trainers – but Jean-Claude the restaurant manager was so professional that he made me feel at ease. Anyway, Pierre gave me an 8-course tasting menu of fabulous food, all with wines. I was getting all these looks

English asparagus

with chervil cassonadeand sauce

1) Cut off the bottoms of the asparagus into a pointed shape and slightly peel, put aside. Bring to the boil the stock and cream and then place a 1/3 in to a separate pan, bring this to the boil add

a 1/3 of the chervil and cook for 1-2 minutes and then place in to a liquidiser and purée

to a fi ne liquid.

2) Repeat with the rest of the chervil and stock. This is so it stays as green as possible and also so

you don’t burn your self when liquidising (if you try to do all the liquid at once it will most probably go

everywhere).

3) Place the liquid in bowl over iced water to cool down.

4) Take 1/2 of the liquid and add the eggs, then whisk together and pass through a sieve.

5) Place this into buttered moulds (so cassonade can easily come out). Then steam on a low heat

for approx 8-10 minutes depending on the size of the mould. Whilst this is steaming place asparagus spears into salted boiling water for approx 3 mins

until tender. Remove from water and pour on some melted butter.

6) Heat the rest of the sauce and serve with the hot cassonade (mousse) and asparagus spears. Serve with some sautéed wild mushrooms

or pan-fried salmon.

THE PAINTED HERON

Hot Sri Lankan chicken curry with snake gourd and roasted spice mix is just one of the delicacies on the menu of this

buzzing Indian restaurant. is is head chef ’s Yogesh Datta’s interpretation of ‘modern Indian’ cuisine and he comes up trumps with an adventurous menu set to intrigue.

Kick off with a sharing starter and plump for the meat option – a marvellous cacophany of tastes and textures (think keema naan fingers, chicken tikka, duck tikka and lamb chops). en continue the meat fest with either duck in Indian green curry with coriander, mint and cashew nuts (cooked to perfection with just the right balance of spices) or go for the diced lamb leg in Kashmiri rogan josh curry with apple crisps which displayed endless lashings of sauce and an impressive depth of flavour that goes way beyond a garlic and chilli kick.

Yet, the clear highlight remained dessert. e beautifully presented chocolate and pistachio fondant hit the spot, oozing the most sublime pistachio cream while the lemon tart was complimented by an excellent kulfi ice cream and a sweet fruit coulis which tied the dish nicely together.

Wines were taken very seriously with an extensive list ranging from nouveau vintages in Hungary to Australian classics; opt for the 2009 Italian Pinot Grigio ‘Grave del Friuli’ Ponte del Diavolo – as refereshing as raita, it cuts through the spices excellently.

In addition, for when the hot weather eventually hits, there’s a lovely courtyard for al fresco dining where one can kick back, relax and lap up the ever fleeting British summer. 112 Cheyne Walk, SW10; 020 7351 5232; thepaintedheron.com

Just a gentle amble from Chelsea Bridge and tucked behind leafy trees lies Cheyne Walk Brasserie. e building, whose formative

years were spent as a Victorian pub, has been transformed into a chic Parisian restaurant marked from the outside by an oh-so-adorable coiffeured poodle swinging above the entrance.

Cornflower blue banquette seating, a healthy dusting of chandeliers and fresh flowers create a stylish interior and set the tone for a stunning feast. Positioned in the centre of the room, an open grill delivers both the sound and smell of your dish being lovingly crafted and creates a real sense of home cooking.

e menu, if rather exuberantly priced, is easy to navigate. Archetypal brasserie dishes range from fabulous cassoulette of snails with cream and garlic sauce to a more simple salad of green beans, pistachios and fresh mint. e provincial edge runs through to

CHEYNE WALK BRASSERIE

RestaurantREVIEWSAbsolutely two of the best riverside delights

the main course where naturally the grill options play a large part of the choice. Carnivores will be satisfied by healthy chunks of meat that arrive at the table complete with charred rosemary burning like incense, but the fish does not let the standard drop – whole native lobster with garlic butter sits with absolute grandeur on the plate, surely the king of any menu?

A predominantly French wine list provides fine wines by the glass or bottle and the well-informed staff, mostly French of course, are on hand to offer encouraging advice.

As Greek As It Gets is one of the rare Greek restaurants in the capital that gets it right. What do you think marks you out from all of the rest? e authenticity, the modern environmant, the casual and friendly staff, and the care taken over the smallest detail.

What is the restaurant’s signature dish? As a starter we would recommend the Romano red peppers stuffed with feta and spinach baked in Retsina wine.

What is your personal favourite and why? Baked Beef with Orzo, because it reminds me of my mother’s kitchen with all the

smells and the flavours. e look of the restaurant is very clean and contemporary – was it a very conscious decision to steer clear of the traditional taverna look?Yes, because it represents me, and I don’t like the ‘touristic Greek’ restaurants with the Parthenon and the fisherman.

What are your earliest food memories? My mother’s milk pie.

What three ingredients remind you of Greece most and why? Oregano, for the smell of the Greek country. Honey from thyme, because we use it in

many of our desserts. And finally olive oil, because Greece does the very best quality.

Why does Greek food lend itself so well to celebrations and feeding big groups ? It is because of the meze concept: we share, we eat all together, and there is big variety. ey are no musts – you do not have to have a starter, a main and a dessert, you can pick and mix.

What would be your last supper? Greek yoghurt with honey and walnuts, so I go lightly...!

THE SPA: Head to e Waterbeach Spa for refl exology, volcanic pebble therapy, Indian head massages or for the very special ‘Nurturing Nights’ package; it costs £299 for two people, with all meals included for the day and night, and guests can choose between a facial, a luxury manicure and pedicure or a shoulder and neck massage to enjoy. Decleor and Carita products, used in all treatments, scent the air beautifully and help to create the peaceful atmosphere that the spa – and adjacent health club – emits.

THE RESTAUR ANT: It’s hard to know where to start at this epicure’s dream. Install yourself either at the Richmond Arms, for its informal but cosy pub-like atmosphere, or at the Bar & Grill for its eff ortlessly relaxed brasserie menu (plus there are serene views out to the golf course from here). But for something completely diff erent, all hotel guests are granted access to dine at e Kennels, which is a splendid private members’ clubhouse, ornate in its Georgian architecture and rich furnishings, and was originally built on the estate for the 3rd Duke of Richmond’s Hunstman and hounds.

THE BEDROOMS: Choice is abundant at Goodwood. Winningly, the suites are both spacious and cosy (think book shelves stacked with tomes), and are furnished with a beautiful melange of antique and thoroughly contemporary styles put together under the expert eye of designer Cindy Leveson. e equally-modern and comfortable garden rooms feature inter-connecting doors, making them ideal for larger groups or families, while the Character Rooms, which are situated in the 18th-century block of the hotel, ooze glamour in all their individually styled décor.

THE BATHROOM: A lavish aff air, with a vast sunken bath, a powerful walk-in shower, and a superfl uity of pleasingly plump fresh white towels.

PRICE TAG: Bed and Breakfast prices start at £140, while suites start at £305 per night. Call 01243 775537 or visit goodwood.co.uk

GET THERE: A regular service runs between London Victoria to Chichester Station, from where a 3-mile, 12-minute taxi ride will take you to the hotel.

THE HOTEL: e Goodwood Hotel is set in a glorious estate in the heart of the Sussex Downs. But this is far from just another sumptuous country hotel; Goodwood is, after all, home to the ‘world’s most beautiful racecourse’, an historic airfi eld, a racing circuit, the Dukes of Richmond and the place to which people fl ock annually for an eclectic sporting calendar of events. e elegant façade belies the modern interior, which packs in a health club, spa and a near-constant presence of Ferraris and Lamborghinis parked all around. Visitors to the hotel may happily partake in rounds of golf and horse riding, but many come simply to enjoy the hotel’s tranquil ambience.

HOTEL EDEN ROCASCONA, SWITZERLANDInfluenced by its close proximity to Italy, Ascona is the charming Swiss town graced with a unique micro-Mediterranean climate that appears to escape the rest of Switzerland. ough the snow-peaked landscape provides a striking backdrop, its other claim to fame is Lake Maggiore, the 68km-long wonder which sits majestically in all its splendour at the foothills of the Alps. Ascona is also the home of the Hotel Eden Roc, from where a visitor can enjoy the mountainous scenery, the inimitable character of the place and the watersports the lake affords everyone. In fact, at the hotel, a grand complex boldly decorated by interior designer Carlo Rampazzi in eccentric luxe décor, getting on the water is a must. Among the many activities, there are team-building exercises on sailboats and

fabulous speed boat jaunts to the quaint daily markets found in the nearby Italian town of Cannobio. Undoubtedly, the main draw here is the hotel’s for-hire private yacht, on which guests can sip champagne, watch the sun setting between the peaks above, while meandering around some of Lake Maggiore’s prime spots – principally the stand-alone island, Isola Bella. Perhaps not a place for jet-skiers; after all, is water-sports Swiss style. It is one of the reasons why, therefore, all water-sports available at the hotel are offered on a complimentary basis. e pedalos, banana boats, tube rides or even kayaks, are yours free of charge for day-long hire at Le Saint Géran. WYNDHAM RIO MAR BEACH, PUERTO RICOere are no less than eleven restaurants in which to indulge at the wondrous Wyndham Rio Mar. Gastronomic adventurers can try American, Puerto Rican and Caribbean fusion culinary delights at the resort, which sits happily in the middle of both the El Yunque National Forest and the Atlantic Ocean, on the north eastern coast of the country’s main island. After all, one soon discovers that the food is a necessary requirement in order to help sustain you through the multitude of activities which await all visitors at this paradisiacal tropical spot. For as well as the merengue classes, beach yoga, sailing classes and wave runner afternoons that can be arranged here, the most popular activity is that of the Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Tour – which can

be booked directly via the Rio Mar’s reception desk on arrival. It’s an unforgettable and much-sought-after experience: beginning at sunset, participants paddle out on a kayak with a tour guide and are taught how the dinoflagellates – the single-celled organisms which create a unique blue glow by releasing energy – bring this bioluminescent bay’s ecology to surreal life. Surrounded by a deafening silence and beams of marine blue in every direction, it’s an informative and peaceful trip. e Rio Mar is one of those rare multitasking hotels, while the three-hour Bio-Bay tour, is an inexpensive way to ensure your trip to Puerto Rico is as memorable as can be.

Gods

At a time when so many hotels are battling to out-cool each other, hiring cutting-edge designers and investing in

bizarre in-room technologies, it’s a great relief to stay in a hotel that remains faithful to its 19th-century origins.

Italy’s gorgeous Bay of Naples is no stranger to great hotels, but the Excelsior Vittoria has the pedigree of being the first in Sorrento, and Italy’s oldest family-owned hotel (it’s been run by the Fiorentino family since it opened in 1834). It is also, in some ways, the most central and most low-key. You’ll miss it if you don’t look. It’s tucked away down a long drive lined with heavy-fruited citrus trees, just off Sorrento’s

main square, Piazza Torquato Tasso, where everyone gathers for aperitif hour and people-watching.

Inside, the hotel’s interior is a gift to any period costume-drama; you half expect Helena Bonham-Carter to appear in bustling skirts from behind a pillar. ere are large, elegant salons with silk wall hangings, damask-covered furniture and vast windows with stained panels overlooking a balustraded terrace and, beyond, a glistening sea and, of course, the looming spectre of Vesuvius. Plaster cherubs smile down from the ceilings, and heavy gilt frames surround the ageing, foxed-glass mirrors, where 19th-century princesses would have

once admired themselves by candelight. Look up, and you’ll see original ceiling frescoes, especially in the magnificent ballroom, where breakfast is served every morning. e reception is packed with sepia photographs of luminaries rolling up in vintage classic cars, and Sofia Loren in her voluptuous prime, pouting on the balcony. Hip hotels, eat your heart out.

Of course, e Excelsior has had to keep up with the times. During its 172-year history, the hotel has built two extra wings, including a bizarre chalet-like building created to please Austrian royalty, who holidayed here in the 19th-century. e hotel’s biggest selling point meanwhile is its location, perched overlooking the

perfectly curved inlet of the Bay of Naples, one of the world’s most famous stretches of coastline, and justly so. anks to rigid planning laws, the area has kept developers at bay, so the coast hasn’t been ruined by identikit villa building. Towns like Positano look much as they did 70 years ago, when writers like John Steinbeck came here to hang out in small bars with local fishermen. Even so, things have changed. In summer, ten thousand tourists can descend on a town that was built to accommodate four thousand. In high season, the charms of the area, with its slow-moving, traffic-choked coastal road, can start to fade fast.

Which is why you need to get your walking boots on and head for the hills.

e Germans and Swiss discovered the delights of walking the mountains that loom over this coastline years ago; the Brits have recently started to realise what they’ve been missing.

One of the best-known walks is the Path of the Gods, which you can do at a brisk pace in about two hours, or three with a picnic break built in. e walk starts in the hilltop town of Agerola, and follows a mountain path – scarily narrow in places with an unfenced sheer drop. On the way, you’ll enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the sea and the villages below, and can see sights immortalised by Homer in e Odyssey (the Bay of Naples is where Odysseus heard the sirens singing to him).

at myth gives you some idea of the area’s sensually beautiful landscapes.

Our guide was Elisabeth Sommer, an Austrian who married a local man and is an expert on the area’s flora, fauna, and local traditions. As you walk, Sommer will point out flowers, and help you navigate your way round the herds of goats that crowd the path. e sound of their bells chiming is the only thing you will hear on this walk; other than that, it’s just the whirr of the wind, and the faint purr of the sea below.

e path finishes at a village called Nocelle. From here, you can jump on a bus down to Positano, or brave the 1,700-step stairway that takes you all the way down. is is certainly pretty, and will keep you

an authentic, small-town feel. Exhausted, we headed back to the hotel.

ere, Vincenzo Galano, head chef at the Excelsior Vittoria, a born-and-bred Sorrento man, had rustled up plenty of sophisticated dishes involving special cuts of beef and fish, but there was plenty of simple food, too. It’s rare you taste pasta, cheese and vegetables that are a world away from what you are used to. Parmigiana,

a dish that is normally a bland, stringy, tasteless mess in most international restaurants, was here a heavenly aromatic mound of melt-in-the-mouth flavour. I’d also recommend the cuts of thin, fragile pizza, flavoured with delicate herbs and tomato so fresh it feels like a pick-me-up.

e last time I came to this part of Italy, I swore I would never go back – it was too crowded. But I’ve changed my

out of the sun as it winds its way through cool wooded areas, affording tantalising glimpses of Positano as you approach it, but beware: going downstairs seems easy, but this number of steps takes its toll on your calves. Be sure to rest on the way, and stretch properly at the end.

Unbelievably, the nimble-footed locals still climb this stairway and some still use donkeys to carry shopping and goods with them – it’s quicker than taking the long, circuitous route by road.

Positano is as lovely as you’ve been told. Small, white and labyrinthine, with a fine Baroque church and a sandy beach, it recalls island villages in Greece. It’s packed with boutique art galleries and shops selling linen, aromatic soaps, liqueurs and home-made ice-creams. At Da Carmine you can have a simple pair of summer sandals, with diamante or stone adornments, made-to-order in about ten minutes by a cobbler who sits outside in the street. Positano may be one of the area’s most popular tourist towns, but its independent shops and artisans still give it

mind; it’s too lovely to ignore. Go early or late in the season (before May or after mid-September). Spend a bit extra on a hotel like the Excelsior Vittoria that is spacious, quiet, civilised, and has its own private grounds (and pool) where you can escape the hordes. And last, but not least, give Sommer a ring and go walking. ere are many other walks you can do aside from the Path of the Gods – all of

them offering a peaceful and private way of experiencing Italy’s most magical coast.

Classic Collection Holidays (0800 294 9318) offers 7 nights at Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, Sorrento from

£1661 per person this July. Price based on 2 sharing a classic garden view room on a bed & breakfast basis and includes return flights from London Gatwick (other UK departure airports available) and private transfers.

MONASTIC MAGNIFICENCEPrince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco are hardly figures naturally associated with the life monastic. Last month, however, the glamorous duo made a beeline for and were the first guests at a 17th-century priory on the dramatic Amalfi Coast – though silence and self-denial were certainly not the order of the day at Monastero Santa Rosa, a new boutique, 20-bedroom hotel converted from a former abbey, built into the cliff. Joining the pair were a host of friends – including New Zealand rugby star Byron Kelleher – for a spot of

at overall skin health. Treatment options available include Botox, Dermal Fillers, Dermaroller, HydraFacial and Obagi; all patients are off ered a computerised skin analysis prior to treatment to identify underlying issues such as UV damage, together with the visible ones. Using this alongside a thorough skin examination, the team formulates the correct treatment plan to fi t each client’s lifestyle and get the results. THE TREATMENT: I opt for the HydraFacial, which is aimed at re-surfacing the skin without lasers. Using a spiral shaped tip, my aesthetic nurse Chantelle expertly extracts the impurities that have built up in my skin. ough slightly scratchy, it is far from painful, and contrary to most skin treatments, I actually feel like it is doing something to ameliorate my skin. e beauty of the treatment is it cleverly infuses hydrating anti-oxident serums. After, Chantelle shines red LED lights on my skin to increase collagen and elastin production.

Skin Deep

THE VERDICT: Unequivocally the best facial I’ve ever had. My skin was instantly brighter, cleaner and fresher, and following the stream of compliments I got, I will certainly be back, perhaps even for Botox, a treatment I’d until now discounted.

THE CLINIC: Tucked away just behind Harley Street, visitors to the Waterhouse Young clinic would be forgiven for thinking they had stumbled across an exclusive members club, such is the elegant façade. Scaling the staircase up from the grand entrance does nothing to disabuse one of the notion, until, at the top, you are greeted with smiles and a genuine sense of welcome. Waterhouse Young’s eminently experienced team specialises in non-surgical cosmetic procedures. Sound intimidating? It shouldn’t. Between its registered aesthetic nurses, doctors and surgeons there is no team in London with more expert knowledge of facial structure.

THE WELCOME: e warmth of the reception is the fi rst thing to strike visitors. As you reach the top fl oor – which is fl ooded with natural light – you are ushered into a comfortable waiting room, complete with copies of Vogue et al, and even iPads – and off ered nuts with an anti-oxidant drink of your choice; detox, age defying, multi vitamin or energy.

THE PEOPLE: Norman Waterhouse is one of the UK’s leading plastic surgeons. He has held a number of senior posts including President of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. Richard Young is a specialist in craniofacial surgery with a particular interest in cosmetic surgery and facial rejuvenation. e most recent addition is Dr. Michele Engel, chosen to complement the team for her unsurpassed understanding of facial structure. She is renowned for her personal approach, which is entirely in keeping with the clinic’s culture. For her the art is in subtlety and enhancement, as opposed to radical change. THE ETHOS: It is all about holistic care at Waterhouse Young. e onus is on treating individual needs, and rather than aff ecting a perfect symmetry or an identikit frozen face, the team focuses on augmenting natural beauty and looking

TOP 3 OTHER TREATMENTS1. Botox: The clinic specialises in administering Botox, the muscle relaxant which minimises the appearance of lines on the face, can tighten jaw lines giving a lift to the neck and is great for eliminating excessive sweating. The effects can last for three-to-six months. Each person is given a full consultation before-hand to determine exactly the effect they hope to achieve.

2. Dermaroller: Advanced micro-skin needling which catalyses the regeneration of collagen and elastin and as such is perfect for treating acne scarring, sun damage, facial and décolleté lines, stretchmarks and overall skin rejuvenation. 3. Dermal Fillers: A treatment which plumps the skin, immediately reducing the signs of ageing. The effects typically last 6 – 12 months, and at Waterhouse Young, the team uses a range of Juvederm and Restylane products.

LONDON EYE Smaller rental properties – one-bed apartments priced at £400-£500pw – are in high demand. But whatever the size of property, tenants expect value for money; it must be priced right to let quickly and it must be well presented, so do undertake refurbishments. ese days, landlords are more flexible when looking for a tenant, perhaps taking on students, a move they may not have considered before. New builds are popular but are in short supply in central London, so tenants are moving further afield; at Kew Bridge, St George’s new luxury riverside development, the first phase of apartments was recently released and we let 10 units immediately. Nick Hubbard, Benham and Reeves lettings, Knightsbridge; 020 7 581 2112; brlets.co.uk

is month has seen the knotty problem of basement conversions raising its ugly head, with some nobby local residents trying to make neighbours who apply for

planning to dig down feel like Jimmy Carr; whilst its legal, it’s somehow immoral to cause neighbours such ill. Having been the cause of such ills myself, I know how it feels. But for the majority, it makes sense, however counter-intuitive it might seem. It’s become the latest way for developers to keep busy; to buy a standard Chelsea house and add a chunk of space brings often tiny houses onto the radar of many more buyers. Groovy kitchens giving into media-come-nightcrawler rooms suit basements well, so why not? If there wasn’t a demand for enlarged Chelsea cottages developers wouldn’t do it, and indeed, if the demand is there, telling people that’s not what the houses were intended for is irrelevant.

e real culprit here is HMRC which has progressively strangled the property market by making moving so expensive that it’s cheaper to build down than buy a bigger house. If those briefing against their neighbours started complaining to government instead we might get our one per cent Stamp Duty [email protected]; 020 7225 1225; dng.co.uk

FINE AND DANDY For Whistler, the ames was an essential muse, so it is apposite that during his life, he chose to live at 33 Tite Street, which leads directly down to the river. But then the painter was hardly alone in his choice of address. e road became something of a draw for the bohemians of the day, including notably Oscar Wilde (no 34), whom Whistler considered both friend and rival (it is said that Wilde, invited to one of Whistler’s dinners, was impressed by the painter’s wit and apparently confided: ‘I wish I’d said that’, to which Whistler replied: ‘You will, Oscar, you will.’

Named after the architect William Tite (also responsible for Chelsea Embankment), the composer Peter Warlock lived at number 30, John Singer Sargent divided his time between his home at number 31 and his studio at number 33, Augustus John was Whistler’s successor as occupant of number 33 and at number 44 Frank Miles the portrait painter lived. ese days, residents have to be somewhat well-heeled to qualify to live on Tite Street. As a guide, number 44 (lived in by Miles and briefly by Wilde) sold for £15,500,00, in 2011. Currently up for sale is this fantastic low-built, five-bedroom property with roof terrace and private garden. £5,400,000, freehold. PLUSH PIMLICO‘Pimlico is always a hot topic of conversation in terms of its performance in the central London market and now is no different. With buyer registrations at an all-time high and stock levels remaining low, it’s not surprising the market is doing well. Last calendar year roughly 40 freehold houses sold averaging £849 per sqft. is trend has not only continued into 2012, but has seen

a 20 per cent increase on last year’s average, with freehold houses on average achieving £988 per sqft.

‘So why is Pimlico so attractive to buyers? Put simply, it still represents great bang for its buck in central London. Our geographical neighbours (SW1X and SW1W) are averaging over twice as much in terms of pounds per sqft (£2,056) and other than postcode snobbery, offer little to justify it. is, combined with the strength of the Asian markets, means that houses prices are still 25 per cent cheaper now for certain global purchasers than they were in 2008, even taking into account the price rises that have taken place.

‘Pimlico is superbly positioned for nearly everything that a central London purchaser is looking for: public transport links, the Gatwick Express, green spaces in the form of Warwick, Eccleston and St Georges Squares, as well as Battersea Park, the river, the West End and the Kings Road. And all for less than half the price of our closest neighbour!’Harry Buchanan, [email protected]

ON YOUR BIKEAfter years of running marathons I assumed that riding 54 miles from London to Brighton on my bike to raise money for the British Heart Foundation might be easier. Happily my assumption was right. at said, the route is most definitely not flat, there are some serious hills to be navigated by the 27,000-strong participants. e sense of camaraderie was great

though, and I am ready for my next challenge: London to Paris. Edward Simpson, Chapeltons Estate Agents; 020 7351 1686; chapeltons.com

THE FINEST COCKTAIL IN SW3 IS... Harry at Cassis mixes a fantastic pear and chilli martini which is my current favourite. e well-known watermelon martini at Eclipse on Walton Street also never disappoints.

MOST INSPIRATIONAL SHOP IN SW3...I am passionate about interiors and really like the Andrew Martin store on Walton Street which specialises in creating and supplying wonderful travel-inspired fabrics and designs using ideas sourced from cultures around the world.

FAVOURITE STREET IN SW3...Walton Street is a cosmopolitan and stylish parade of boutique shops, bars and restaurants. ere is a healthy balance of residential properties mixed in which helps maintain a community feel to the street.

‘‘Sales or lettings Patrick?’ she

repeated sounding somewhat exasperated. At this point I was a little distracted. e

aggravated lady was sitting opposite me crossing and re-crossing her long legs in a manner later made famous by Sharon Stone. I recovered, sufficiently enough to blurt out: ‘Err. I don’t mind’. ‘Right’ she said brusquely, ‘we have a lettings negotiator position in Battersea. You will do. You start tomorrow’.

And that was it. A three-minute interview and I had a job in an industry I knew absolutely nothing about. e lady was one Joanna Hamilton and the firm was Barnard Marcus, which was a good name in those days. at was 1989 and I was just about the only bloke on the lettings side of the industry, which had its occasional perks. So, for a number of reasons, I enjoyed my new found career and did not go back into private clients’ stockbroking, in which I had done a brief, enjoyable stint.

Obviously things have changed dramatically, but there is one element that hasn’t changed; it is as easy now to become an estate agent as it was then. No qualifications are required to open up and sell or let properties on behalf of the hapless public. To me this is a huge problem within the industry, perhaps less so in Chelsea where most (but not all) agents are pretty good and know what they are doing.

I have never been proud to be an estate agent. I do not enjoy our poor standing in the public eye and the sometimes sneering attitude we encounter. In response, at an early stage, I became a member of the Association of Residential Letting

Agents (ARLA) and, slightly later, the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA). ese partner organisations work together to raise and maintain standards by self-imposing strict rules of conduct and requiring member agents to hold qualifications which they must then regularly maintain.

Recently, again by accident (I put my hand up at the wrong time having misheard the chairman at an AGM), I’ve become more heavily involved in the NAEA in London and now am chairman of the London region. I organise regular meetings with industry-relevant speakers, plus I have many discussions with agents – sometimes they just need a sympathetic ear. I am particularly interested in the politics and economics of the property industry and at the moment I’m involved in helping the NAEA and others to lobby government on Stamp Duty, which should be called Property Purchase Tax. It is now ridiculously high and an inhibitor to transactions, especially in London where virtually all purchases suffer a significant levy. And London property? Well, the return on capital employed has proven to be far higher than that of the stock market or pensions over the years. So perhaps my accidental career choice was right in the end.

At my firm STANLEY Chelsea, we pride ourselves on honest, frank advice and genuinely try to help each client make the best decision. We have a great team and personally, I enjoy advising clients on how to structure their property holdings and also like navigating through some of the more complex deals. 020 7352 9556;[email protected]

BOVINGDON ROAD, SW6is wider-than-average ‘Lion’ house is conveniently situated for the many excellent shops, restaurants and green open spaces of Eel Brook Common, as well as its highly regarded nurseries and schools, including Pippa Poppins, omas’s, Kensington Prep, Fulham Prep, Lady Margaret’s and L’ecole Marie d’Orliac. Five bedrooms, two receptions, four bathrooms (two en suite), a beautifully proportioned kitchen with Smeg appliances and a private garden make it the perfect family home. £2,150,000, freehold, through Hamptions International; 020 7384 1001; hamptons.co.uk

PARSONS GREEN, LONDON, SW6is elegant three double-bedroom split-level maisonette is a winning prospect for anyone handy with the brushes, since its stunning, light-flooded top floor conservatory would make an ideal artist’s studio. Straddling the Fulham/Chelsea border, it is arranged over four floors, and is beautifully presented throughout, offering well-balanced living and bedroom accommodation which makes it ideal for entertaining. e ground floor comprises a superb double reception room with bay windows, and a modern kitchen leading to a patio garden. e upper floors include three double bedrooms, a stunning master bathroom and a shower room, while the aforementioned top floor conservatory opens onto a private balcony.£999,950, through Marsh and Parsons; 020 7736 9822; marshandparsons.co.uk

LESSONS FROM HISTORYAspire’s Fulham office has conceived of a novel way to illustrate the financially appreciative power of property – namely by comparing it to coffee. Aspire’s latest research narrates how, 120 years ago, one Mr J Nichols, a local builder developed and sold houses on the Peterborough Estate for £300 – which means that their current prices of around £2m has seen the value rocket by 6,666 times. Meanwhile, the coffee shop that stood where Aspire’s office now is, back in 1889 sold coffee for 7.5p per pound for an amount that would now cost £10, only 133 times the price. e moral? Buy houses, not coffee. aspire.co.uk

Prime purchaseA classic 1930s development refurbished to 21st-century standards

WHYese houses are a must for those devotees of the 1930s aesthetic who nonetheless want all the bells and whistles of a contemporary home. e period houses are the latest project by E and O’s Paul Goldstein, who has vastly and ingeniously extended the interior space. And as well as cinema rooms, centrally controlled heating and ventilation, underfloor heating, bespoke lighting design, individual 2000-sqft leisure areas and a steam room, their setting is the other great draw. e elevated position on a hill

means that the views are fantastic, while the houses themselves are hidden from sight. Additionally, there are landscaped and terraced gardens designed by Randle Siddeley, which are south-facing, plus three of the four properties have private summer houses.
